My boyfriend and I came for dinner and it was nice. The ambiance is great and the service was wonderful. The food was good - it wasn't the best Italian food I have ever had, but it was just fine. I found the sauces in both dishes a little sweet for my palate. We got the meatballs to start and I had the chicken with mixed greens. The balsamic reduction was very sweet, I think it needed some more acid to cut the sweetness. I might come back for a nice date night that doesn't break the bank...but then again this city is full of these sorts of places! read more

I was craving Italian food so I decided to check yelp and see what's around that convenient and tasty! My husband and I and couple friends ordered and and it couldn't have been any better. I was told to try the penne pomodoro. Great meat sauce pasta! We also ordered the skirt steak with truffle fries and their plain cheese pizza! We thought we'd have leftovers. Met a friend here for lunch (Friday, ~12:45). We both work in the area and when he suggested the place I was initially hesitant because of the low ratings. But I went with his suggestion and am glad that I did. We were seated promptly. Service was good, bread and olive oil came quick. The place wasn't that busy - maybe 60% capacity. After we ordered the food came out in an appropriate amount of time - not so fast that your concerned it's not fresh, but not so long that it's an annoyance when you have to get back to work. I had the special, a black spicy shrimp ravioli - really great. The ingredients were fresh, the ravioli was good, the sauce was dope. read more

The food is awful and the manager and bartender hostile, rude and inappropriate. I vomited what I was served and asked to just be given linguine with garlic and oil. They quickly threw a sloppy plate of pasta in front of me. They managed to screw that one up too. I was then given what I had vomited back and asked the hostess to put it in the garbage ( where it belonged.) then charged for both orders! The restaurant is small and too noisy. It sucks. I rounded down to 3/5: Price - it's a little pricey; Salad - I've had better. I work in NY periodically and I've been to a number of Italian restaurants all over this city. I've not been to a place quite like Max. The menu is very simple. Pretty much pick a salad, pasta and a sauce. I had a Capresi salad to go with the meal. I'd give it a 2.5 out of 5. It was a little on the small side and I think a few more tomatoes would have been a good addition. For the main dish I had pene with vodka sauce. Easily a 4/5. Really good vodka sauce which is hard to find in this city for some crazy reason. Not saying that it doesn't exist but the quality varies greatly. read more

Definitely one of the best overall restaurant in terms of balancing price and quality of food. I've had Max's probably a dozen times, and 11 of the 12 times, it has been amazing. (Once, my pasta was overcooked; some times it is on the verge of being overcooked.) Favorite dishes: rigatoni with eggplant, black spaghetti with shrimp, rigatoni with meatballs. All are delicious. The gnocchi is just okay, and the lasagna is pretty good, but not amazing. The panna cotta for dessert is also quite good. This is a great place for a romantic, cost-efficient ($13 pastas!) meal. Fabulous hidden gem in tribeca! Cozy and dark. We were seated immediately on a Friday at 630, and by 730 the place was filled. It is a small restaurant so try to get a reservation or get there early. We ordered burrata and cherry tomatoes and the tri colore salad to start with a bottle of chardonnay. For dinner my friend had one of the pizzas and I had the salmon. The dish was incredible. The salmon was cooked perfectly and well seasoned, the spinach and mashed potatoes on the side were delicious. The bill was right around $100 for everything which I thought was great value. The waitress was very sweet and made good recommendations. I will definitely go back again. read more

My favorite little spot in all of NYC. Tucked away in tribeca, this tiny little restaurant serves some of the best pasta I've ever had. My loyalty belongs to the pasta al sugaro - it melts in your mouth! My husband loves their lasagna. I dont think this location serves the truffle oil porcini ravioli but that's another gem. There'll be plenty for leftovers if you can stop yourself from overeating the entire bowl of pasta. read more

Great, rustic Italian food. Had to wait an extra 10 minutes for our reserved table, which wasn't a problem. The hostess was SUPER nice about it and gave us a free bottle of Prosecco as thank you for waiting. Anytime anybody is nice to me in a New York restaurant it sort of shocks me. Meal was great. Came here last night (Sunday) with the GF after peeking at several restaurants in the area. The menu had a nice variety to it, and was very reasonably priced. Was a cute place, well-spaced for the amount that is available. The upstairs was great. Shared a nice bottle of wine ($29). App: shared the Fresh Spaghetti with Lamb Ragu. This was amazing and i highly suggest sharing a pasta...it is the traditional way regardless. Entree: Sauteed Fillet of Sole with Truffled Oil and Mashed Potatoes Meatloaf with Potato Gratin The meatloaf (as mentioned above by ham lover) is amazing. The portion is massive and the stuffed ham/cheese is a pleasant surprise. The fish was very good and fresh. The only complain was that it could have been served hotter. It was warm, at best, and this Sole is a fish best served warm for its buttery-flake when downed. It had more of a solid texture to it... Tiramisu was average. Bianca and Novita serve much better. All-in-all, if you can have a full meal, bottle, have a good time and spend $50/person that is an achievement in Manhattan. I'd give 5 stars, if the fish was better. I can't even begin to tell you how much I love Max. I have had my birthday dinner there for the past eight years, and I regularly go. I like this Tribeca one because it's not as crowded as the East Village location, and not as far off the beaten path as the Max SoHa up in Morningside Heights. All three pretty much have the same menu and are equally good, in my opinion. Best dish ever is the fettucine with meat sauce. Delicious, filling, and so satisfying with the homemade pasta. Other great dishes are the porcini ravioli and spaghetti with lamb ragu. Everything is filling and reasonably priced. Pretty good wine list, too. This is a great date spot--most of the light comes from candles, and they have a couple of tables tucked away in the alcoves of the restaurant. I like this location because there is an elevated second level that allows more tables to fit in the restaurant. Also, they deliver! read more

Food was really bad. I got the rigatoni with meatballs & sausage and it was inedible. So salty it was like a salt lick. And I'm a guy that usually finishes his meal no matter how mediocre, so this was bad. Service was poor too. We sat on the top level (loft type area) and I had to walk down to the bar to get another glass of wine. In a neighborhood with really good restaurants, this place lacks. Go to the Roc down the street for better Italian in Tribeca. read more

visited max with a friend on a sunday night, 1/19. we were in battery park city looking for italian, and stumbled on the place. we started with the prosciutto e mozzarella, and ended with pollo capriccioso (mine) and fettuccine. my friend seemed to like his pasta; my main, however, was fair. as soon as it arrived, i thought: "the sunday chef must be in" (the "b" chef). the chicken was buried - not just covered - interred - in bruschetta and greens, and everything tasted an hour or two past fresh. the upside of max was the space itself: old-school wooden bar; two floors; and various sized doors including in the bathroom (while pissing, i had one eye on the toilet and the other on the mini door, waiting for a hobbit to exit). read more

Max's is a cozy, hearty and relatively affordable place in TriBeCa that feels like your idealized neighborhood Italian place. I had a very pleasant dinner here. For starters my friends and I shared the meatballs and grilled vegetables which were both really good, the meatball sauce was slightly sweat and very good, I used the bread to soak it up. Unfortunately, our food was mediocre at best, the acoustics make the place very loud (even at 5 on a Sunday), service was disorganized and rude (which we would've known if we'd checked Yelp first), and pricing was not transparent - drink prices were more expensive than listed, and a side dish substitution cost us an extra $5, without warning when we ordered or clarification when we asked about the bill. I really don't want to write such a horrible review BUT I have not had a meal this bad in years. My husband and I were excited when we saw a new spot in the neighborhood open up, just around the corner from us but you couldn't pay me to eat at this place. I'm going to write this as someone who has worked in hospitality for 20 years and I hope the owners and managers read it and know that it's not meant to be malicious but if you don't figure it out you'll be closed in a month. Let's start with the chicken liver pate, I wanted to take a picture but literally it was so offensive I honestly, not kidding, wanted to throw up when they put this plate on my table. It literally looked like someone took an actual sh*t on a plate. 2 pieces of toast w diarrhea on them. We all know that pate is ugly but to serve it like this, almost as if you had squeezed it out of a pastry bag, what were you thinking??? Then you serve me french fries that were so dripping wet with oil that they were inedible, I mean any human on the planet could have seen that these fries should never have been served to a guest. And what on earth is that garnish??? A slice of old tomato and some arugula, how does that make any sense on a plate of steak frites?? Is your dishwasher also your chef? You need so much help, everything was bad- service, presentation, food, please hire someone who knows what they are doing this place is a total zero.
