Some of the other escape room companies we were looking at had a minimum of 3 person on weekends- so even if it was just two people, you had to pay for 3. I get it but naahh. Maze Rooms for the win. We did the World of Illusions room, which we were told was the hardest one. It was challenging just with the two of us but we had a blast!!! My group of six completed the World of Illusions escape room here. It was circus-themed but not the clown/juggler kind. I've been to other Maze Rooms locations, and they have not disappointed! The game master here was friendly but busy. He was managing multiple rooms at the same time. I think World of Illusions may have been one of the top escape rooms I have done. The room was cool with cool puzzles. Some of the puzzles take time to work, so I recommend being patient. It's those types where if it's old, it lags. [Some people in my group repeated some actions in succession, which may have taken even more of our time.] I did cut my finger on the bike by accident though. World of Illusions had a level 3 difficulty. I thought pharaoh's tomb sounded interesting, but it was a level 2. I may consider trying that on a different visit. read more

Do not book with this company! I booked a same day experience to begin at 4 pm at 3:03. I called to confirm that the room would be ready within an hour. Russ confirmed everything would be ready. I arrived 20 min prior to start, as instructions state to come 15 min beforehand. In addition, the parking lot was closed. I circled the block and parked, called and was told the game master would arrive 10 min prior to start time. I patiently waited and circled back to the lot, which was still closed. I called and spoke to a woman who stated they were getting in touch with the game master and I would receive a call back shortly. I patiently waited, now 15 min. past start time, only to not receive a call back. Called back and Spoke to Russ again, who told me the game master is clocked in and should be on the premises. I opened the lot gate myself, only to find the doors of the building padlocked and no one present. Russ stated he would cancel and provide a refund. Also stated that the game master will arrive shortly if I wanted to wait. I asked what does "shortly" mean, and was told he did not know exactly when the game master would show. I pleaded for Russ to please tell me an eta, as I had been waiting in the car with my child for over 45 min. at this point. Russ insisted he could not tell me when his employee was coming to work. Game master sent an email stating they'd arrive at 430. I was ultimately able to speak to the game master over the phone, who apologized and stated they were in traffic. I continued to wait and game master showed up at 4:48! with a start time of 4. Unacceptable!!! It is a week later and I have not received a refund. Do not go here! read more

From the outside it looked like a shady junker. However when we stepped inside it was a cool 70 degrees and we were immediately greeted by game-master Tiffany. After a brief synopsis of the "One way ticket", we were escorted upstairs to our escape room. Surprisingly, it was well adorned and outfitted. The production value was good. The clues were challenging but not obscure and impossible. There were 3 separate "cars." We solved it with a few hints with a few minutes to spare. I came here on 12/26 and did the Pharaoh room with my family and we all enjoyed it! It took us around 50 minutes with a few hints. We purchased the deal on groupon. The game master was friendly, there was storage lockers, bathrooms and some free parking in front. This place lost points from us because it wasn't the nicest escape room we've been to. The lights provided kept dying, the room floors were dirty, some of the room accessories looked very cheap/dated, etc. I'd still recommend it because of the deals. read more

Run, don't walk, to their other escape room locations. This was my 20th room in LA and I treated one of my friends for his birthday. The game master was so bad that he ruined the experience for us. I had done two other maze rooms at the Koreatown location (magic kingdom and sky odyssey - definitely recommend both of those) so I had high hopes for this room. When we arrived, the game master was very dry and almost annoyed that we booked the 10:20pm game on Friday night. We were very jovial and his sarcastic attitude really sucked the energy out of our group. When we got inside the temple, there were numerous technological fails. We had to radio our game master to ask him why obvious areas weren't working when we completed tasks. At one point he told us that we didn't notice an area opening but we saw how he opened it right after we pointed out that it hadn't been working. The clues are falling apart and the magnets on a lot of things don't work. It's a decently impressive set but they don't even let you take a photo inside after you complete the room. Our game master said none of the locations allow you to but that's not true because I took photos in the Koreatown location. Also yelp and the website have photos of other players in the room so we sure wouldn't have been the first to get a photo in there. I'm serious about my stats and the game master never told us what our escape time was. We had to go back in to ask for it. We escaped with 2 minutes left. At the time we visited, the escape rate for Pharaoh's Tomb was 39% and the fastest time was 22 minutes. There is a small free parking lot which is helpful in Hollywood. There is a $10 discount if you use the code Yelp10. However they charge you $2 per person transaction fee online and don't allow you to book/pay in person to avoid that fee. read more

Very disappointed with the service at this location. I've been to several Maze Rooms (Dragon's Lair, Garrett's, and Tombstone) and have had a wonderful experience at each one - until this one. Pharaoh's Tomb: only awesome thing about this room is the theme and decorations. I felt like I was truly transported to a pharaohs tomb. What was disappointing was the overall design and puzzle flow. The puzzles seemed half heartedly thought through and the mechanics here were janky and didn't "pop" as they should. We actually had to ask what was supposed to happen because nothing happened and they had to tell us how to unjankify the mechanism. Service: worse service I've had from a game master (and I've done at least 6 rooms by now). He wasn't very friendly and didn't reset the room properly. A puzzle was already opened and solved for us right when we got in. When we asked for a hint, he gave us a hint for a puzzle we already solved. Probably the worst Maze room location we've been to and will not avoid doing any other rooms here. read more

I've done a good 10-20 escape rooms, and I'm not an expert. But I know the rooms I've done are very intricate. We did World of Illusions with 8 people. For the most part, we're all amateurs, but I thought with more people it would be easier for us to solve - which is true. The maze itself is very well thought out, except one part. Not trying to say too much to spoil, but some colors look the same when they shouldn't.. and we were stuck on that part for the longest time. I was also a bit unhappy with the game master... At times when we asked for help, she wouldn't even answer and it was towards the end of the escape room time limit. We literally kept saying "hello? hello? we would like a clue now..." and nothing. At one point, she said something to us on the walkie talkie, but then she said it was actually meant for the other escape room group. I can't just go to another city without trying an escape room. I tried their Koreatown location and it was awesome! This time around, we had our kids, so we chose to try World of Illusions. First of all, World of Illusions was such a GREAT ROOM! Whoever put this room together, oh my, will the real slim shady please stand up? Because this room was amazing. It is by far my FAVORITE escape room I have done. It is SO different from the others! Love it! Can you open one in Hawaii?? Anyway... Without giving anything away, This room has a great way of sticking to the theme! You really feel like you are in a magician's world. In fact, you need a little bit of teamwork and magic each step of the way! Overall our whole family LOVED this room! We had such a high when we escaped. It was awesome! It really took all of us to solve everything. Totally family friendly! We had our 11 yr old, 13 year old, and to 18 year olds with us. Everyone had fun! I recommend for everyone! The only mood killer was our Game Master. He just didn't seem like he wanted to be there. When he telling us the story, there was just no emotion to it, not even a smile. When we escaped the room (in a pretty good time too, we had 15 min to spare!) he just stood there and showed us the stairs to go down. No emotion, no smile. We had to ask him to take our photo. So unfortunately, we LOVED the room, but the game master was a kill joy. So one star dinged away for the game master who didn't want to be there, 4 stars because I REALLY loved this room. read more

So disappointing. The actual escape room was fun, but the customer experience was terrible. I had a friend cancel and I was able to call right around the 24 hour mark to get a refund for a ticket. They let me know I had to email instead, so I was a few minutes late. They were requesting my number to confirm that I wasn't even a minute late before the 24 hour deadline to get a refund. Their focus on this minutia and disregard for the customer is really disappointing. Was the price of one ticket really worth jeopardizing customer experience? I understand if I was hours late, but I was within the timeframe. Missed opportunity here. read more

We came here for my brother & sister's 13th quarantine birthday. They absolutely loved it! We were able to escape Pharoah's Tomb. The room had the perfect amount of mystery to creep the kids out. The youngest was 9 & he said he had the time of his life. Besides the room, the hospitality was amazing. I don't remember the gentleman's name that helped us but we went on a Monday at 4:20 pm and he was more than accommodating to our party! He himself deserves 5 stars! In addition, the facility did a great job with keeping us safe from COVID-19 with their many hand sanitizers & clean bathroom. We will definitely be booking again! read more

We arrived half an hour early (Because if you aren't at least 15 minutes early they can cancel your reservation). At 2:20 pm, the entire facility was locked up tight. There were several parking spaces - behind a locked gate. Another group with tons of kids rolled up. Seventeen people were now standing on the curb outside a locked, gated storefront wondering ~ were we scammed? I called the CS line and a woman said she thought the game master was probably re-setting the games. NO, there was not ANYONE anywhere. When someone finally came to let us in, we had to wait another 20 minutes to get into the room, starting 10 minutes after our slated start time. World of Illusions was okay. I've been to over a dozen games just in LA and this is mid. We were told we could ask for help 3 times but the guy kept coming on mic to offer suggestions even when we were nowhere near needing help. It felt like there was another group after us and he was trying to get us out early so he could re-set and get the venue back on schedule. In all, it was okay. We beat it. Customer service means everything. When I told him their toilet had issues, he shrugged and said, "yeah, plumbing". Not impressed, will not return. read more

The satisfaction that you feel when you finally figure out the current set of clues is so satisfying. I'm not going to lie when you pull up to the parking lot in the back it's a little sketchy However, once you go in it's a nice place! My group arrived 15 minutes early. The instructions were straightforward. The staff was super nice. We got a walky takie from staff to use if we had any questions, requests, or needed help/hints. The escape room itself was SO COOL! Doors open up, safes unlock, the lighting, the clues... all of it was so realistic! It was definitely a great idea to come here for Halloween! We got to pass one of the hardest escape rooms too! Very unprofessional worker - he was very unfriendly and failed to reset the room properly which ruined the flow of the game as we were able to skip over puzzles. Also one of the doors failed to trigger and fully open which made things hard to navigate. Pharoah's Tomb in general isn't well designed - it's very confusing and the entire place is dark for the entirety of the room. It's cool at first and provides a cool atmosphere but just becomes a nuisance after a while. As previously discussed, some of their mechanisms are quite old and damaged / broken. Would avoid this room and location and choose other Maze Rooms that are much better designed and run (Dragon's Lair, Tombstone, etc.). read more

#80 of 2017 I assembled an excavation team of rare talents to solve this appointed escape room early Monday morning. And still, I was not sure we had enough resources, skills, knowledge to get out alive. You could feel the intensity in the room, waiting in the lobby for our chance. The parking lot is small. If you get there in mid day that may become an issue. In the early morning when we came, we were the only car but that was not the case by the time we left. Our team of 5 have all played before. Experience was on our side. I with the most had much skepticism. Forcasting possibilities, letting everyone know what may be good tactical positions to take in specific situations. It becomes a daunting task for the task master. It was time, we only had 1 hour to resolve the mystery or would the mystery consume us like many before. That, cannot be revealed but I stand here now and can say... Assemble your team. Make sure they come from a varied many walk of life. Make sure reservation online for your team. Be in the lobby 30min. before your appointed start time. Maybe 45min. before for teams of 10 or more. You will need that time to listen to the video that will debrief you and to fill out their waiver\disclaimer\in case you should die or need serious medical attention. Wear shoes. With all that scuffling, best to protect your feet. Use the restroom before you enter your appointed room. Don't need to go? Go anyway. Sucks when team members have to exit to relieve yourself. Have one person call things out, designate a table to put everything solved. And most of all, be patient and have fun. Yes, I would come back here. read more

My fiancée and I have done all three rooms at this location and have enjoyed all of them. Having done over 100 rooms, I'd have to say World of Illusions is probably my favorite here. It was very well-designed, immersive, and also the most challenging of the three. I wouldn't recommend this room for beginners unless you're in a larger group. There is a lot to do in this room for two people unless you are very experienced, but it's not challenging to the point where the room loses its fun. Pharaoh's Tomb was also great. The room was admittedly on the easier side, but still well-decorated and creative. If you're on the more experienced side, I would say that this room is perfect for 3 or less, but otherwise you may find there isn't as much for some members to do if you're a larger group. One Way Ticket feels more immersive than Pharaoh's Tomb and is slightly more challenging, although still on the easier side. This room is perfect for two people, even if you aren't necessarily the most experienced with escape rooms, as there is plenty to do, but not an overwhelming amount. I would recommend all three rooms at this venue for smaller groups. The only downside is Maze Rooms is a bit steep on the price unless you have more people. The only other thing I would hope they could change is that their hint system is delivered via walkie talkie, which is fine but ruins the immersion compared to the hint systems of other rooms that are finding more creative and integrated ways of delivering hints. Still, the escape rooms here are great fun and are highly recommended. read more

Third Maze Room location I've been at and I have to say this one is on the same level as the Vermont location. We only booked for the Pharaoh's Tomb at first, but because we liked that room so much, and there was an opened spot for One Way Ticket an hour later, my friends and I thought WHY NOT? We are already here anyway. We were showed a preview/rule video of the Maze Room, which my friends and I have never seen before, even though we went to two other Maze Room locations. Weird right? PHARAOH'S TOMB Pretty damn fun! The theme of the room reminded me of The Mummy movie. I absolutely love how the flow of the game worked. All the clues, puzzles, and even some of the mini surprises made sense. I rank this as my second favorite escape from Maze Room (out of 5, for now), Magic Kingdom is still my favorite. One Way Ticket Once you walk in, I honestly felt like I was on a train, a high end one at that too. The puzzles in this room was very interesting, one part ( I won't give it away, but has something to do with the black bottles) was very very creative. Something my friends and I never experience in a escape room before. Props to the game owner who created that puzzle. Although at the end of the game, when we finished the last puzzle, it was anticlimactic. We didn't know we finished, so we kept trying to figure out what was the next puzzle. We kept searching for a good 5-7 minutes until we ask for a hint. It turned out our game master didn't know we accomplished the last step and couldn't open the door for us at that moment when we finished. read more

I've been to other Maze Rooms before and quality of the rooms across locations is pretty inconsistent. I've been let down by other locations before but luckily the location here in Hollywood have A-grade rooms. If you're going to check out maze rooms, go here to ensure consistent quality and service since their rooms in Hollywood are owned by the actual owners of Maze Rooms. The puzzles + sets + immersiveness are of actual good quality and the game masters are actually attentive to their guests. One Way Ticket (4/5) This room is pretty immersive and it's built almost like an actual train car. The sound and visual affects are extremely well thought-out and they only thing that would could have this feel more legit was to have the room rumble like an actual train car. It's the easiest room at this location but that doesn't mean it's not worth doing. But because it's fairly easy and linear I'd recommend attempting the room with just 2 as you might finish the room a bit too hastily with more. World of Illusions (5/5) This room is their newest and it's amazing. This has got to be the best maze room set to date. There is lot of production value going on in this room and the entire set is extremely well made. Definitely check out this room if you're a fan of high-quality puzzles, and amazing sets that will have you just stop and admire everything that's built. The room starts off linear but quickly becomes non-linear as you progress so definitely bring more friends along. read more

ONE WAY TICKET-40th room PHARAOH'S TOMB-56th room Nice location.. minimal parking. Get there early! Owner is nice One way was a different kind of room. You actually feel like you are on a train..so if you get motion sickness, do not look on the screens (windows). They did a great job of making the set feel real. There were 3 of us which is a perfect amount to all be involved with puzzles. This is a bit of a scavenge room and is non linear. They bring in the elements of the senses for puzzles which is my favorite thing. There isn't too much of a story line to follow when we played, it was more of a scramble but still playable and fun. Go play this room if you like trains..I guarantee there aren't any rooms that are themed in this way. For pharaohs tomb, the entrance and transitions took it for me. The puzzles matched the theme to the T. There was one part that scared me a little and had that Indiana Jones vibe.. like if you were in a cave and needed to rush. One thing that was a downer for us was when we played the room.. our game master did not reset the room all the way and locked our piece we had been looking 10 minutes for into a box that we needed that exact piece to open..but other than that it was a fun room that was utilized well read more

I was Pretty disappointed because this escape room was ranked one of the best in LA. Gamemaster gave us walkie-talkie and left without another word, door was locked for a bit we were banging on the wall and no response so we had to call the place to open the door since the walkie wasn't working correctly, waited about 5 minutes of the room banging and waiting for the walkie to be fixed (Don't put your phone in the locker) After the first part of the room, gamemaster started to be really helpful. I wouldn't recommend this place if you're looking for one of the best rooms. My boyfriend and I recently tried World of Illusions this past weekend. The room was possible to escape with a pair that is familiar with escape rooms (we've done about 30 together). However, I would recommend a group of 3-4. The room is also family friendly, and escapists of all ages would enjoy this room. The location does have a decent amount of parking spots, which is definitely a plus for this location. The room itself was beautifully designed; although as many others have previously stated it does have red herrings. It definitely took my partner and I some leaps to draw connections in order to solve some of the puzzles. A couple of them were frustrating in the sense that they required the items to be set in a particular configuration in order to work properly. Normally this mechanic isn't a problem in other rooms we have done as the game master usually calls attention to such an issue right away, and it doesn't take up too much of our time. There is also another puzzle that once you begin to solve it, it cannot be reset, so things must be committed to memory without you really being aware until you're about halfway through the puzzle. One of my critiques involves the lack of presentation from our game master. Although he wasn't rude or unpleasant in any way, he definitely appeared to be tired to some capacity. I usually don't allow it to be enough to knock off an entire star, but his hosting of the game from start to finish did affect our experience. When we had entered, he sat us down and had us watch the introduction video. We did not sign any waivers before beginning our game. He let us know that lockers were not in use, to simply just take our things in the room with us. We then walked upstairs and he told us that there wasn't really any story associated with the room, just to start and we had one hour. I don't usually expect a grand monologue before entering the room, but part of the experience is the immersion, which started off on a poor note. The walk-in-talkie system for hint delivering was inconsistent as well, as it was difficult to hear the game master at times. Although we did escape, it was definitely not very satisfying to do so. The door was opened and we just took our belongings and left the room. Also, at the end we weren't offered to take a photo of any sort, and I also felt like it would have been a bother to ask him for one. Overall, his performance just did not meet my expectations, and definitely fell short. Overall the set design of the room was gorgeous, although there are areas that could definitely be improved. The aesthetic of the rooms at this location are amazing but the mechanics need some work. We've been to other maze rooms where everything works flawlessly when you get the puzzle right We did world of illusions here the first time and that rooms sensors and player leading (light and audio cues) need work. We decided to give this place a second chance and do Pharaoh's Tomb and we had the same problem AGAIN. We did the puzzle correctly and the mechanics wouldn't get triggered. This results in players getting frustrated. Had everything worked perfectly, this room would've been incredible! One of our favorite rooms is at the Playa del Rey location so we obviously love Maze Rooms. read more

Because I have officially completed all 3 games available at Maze Rooms on Highland in Hollywood. For my tl;dr audience, it boils down to this: If you want a real challenge with tons of whimsical puzzles, go for "World of Illusions". If you enjoy elements of exploration and many surprises, try "Pharaoh's Tomb". Finally, if you want a strong plot-driven experience with an incredibly polished and posh looking set, buy yourself a "One Way Ticket"! Tonight, dressed in our dapperest get-up, we took on Maze Room's take on a steampunk-inspired train ride, and came close to Death face-to-face. You see, as the most successful railroad business owners in the West, not only did we make bank, we also inevitably made some enemies along the way--some of them hidden right among the staff. A disgruntled employee had concealed a bomb aboard, set to go off in 1 hour, before the train's arrival at its final station. Would this journey be our last, a one-way ticket... TO HELL? Two things really made me appreciate this room a lot more than I expected: the story, and the set. As mentioned above, this was a very strong plot line by most escape room standards. It's simple, yet direct. It's got an interesting conflict, and a clear goal for resolution. Its simplicity was elegant, and it really helped my group to get into character. All the prep work done by the premise was further strengthened by the amazing, amazing looking set, which was essentially different cars on a train unit. The promo pics on the website probably didn't need a whole lot of photoshopping, because the production value was just as impressive in person as it was online. When I set afoot inside the room, I squealed uncontrollably. It. Looked. So. GOOD! It's certainly good enough to film a Sherlock Holmes movie in here. And with our own preppy costumes, everything just complemented to perfection. On the walls of each train car were "windows" that displayed moving scenery that simulated constant motion of the moving vehicle. While this was undoubtedly an impressive touch, I did feel that without the element of motion, or an atmospheric soundtrack (train track sounds, maybe?), it wasn't 100% convincing. So owners, I'd love to see you perfect this aspect of immersion some day. Puzzle wise, everything played out just as magnificently as the visuals. This was definitely a heavily tech dependent room, but the execution was perfect. Every key items used to unlock and progress the game were objects that were logical within the setting. And to illustrate without outright spoiling it for anyone, there's an alcohol puzzle in the bar, for instance. This was the ONLY ROOM of the 3 that impressed me so, in the way that no single challenge felt forced or misplaced. Literally every riddle tied in plausibly as actions that a character might take as the story unfolded. I did have slight issues with the room that prevented it from being perfect; for example, certain objects would require *exact* placements to trigger next step, even if answer input was 100% the right idea. Some puzzle props would "react" (ie, make a noise) even when I knowingly had not yet attempted to solve 'em, leading to slight confusion, (as in "Did I solve this already? By luck?"). Finally, 1 particular audio cue went completely missing, causing us to delay a certain step until gm's intervention. Most hints I requested stemmed from these setbacks, and could potentially be avoided. Aw well, no tech room is ever perfect, and gm did help move things along, but this inevitably detracted from the illusion of escape room magic. One particular puzzle'd also benefit from slight modification to provide a more clarified and clean-cut solution. Difficulty was easy-medium, and with hints mentioned above, we defused the bomb with time to spare! I guess we oughta rename the room "Round-Trip Tickets" after all, 'cause evil's foiled, and Death's gonna have to try harder on another day. Tbh... "Ticket" just became my favorite at the Hollywood branch, something truly unexpected since "Illusions" was such a strong contender. The commitment to balance story, immersion, and puzzle made "Ticket" the most well-rounded option, ultimately tipping the scale in its favor in the end. Last but not least, our gm Clovis was one of the reasons why this business's keeping its 5-star rating. What a pro! He was quick to respond when I entered the building, well-versed and well-trained in the way he guided us through all the procedures, and was attentive and proactive in keeping the game progress smooth running. He's a bit of a stickler to the rules, which showed principles, and was a great promoter for his employers--Selfie Museum, anyone? He also showed passion for escape room as a hobby/topic in general, so tyvm, it's a privilege to have you as our gm in my closing chapter with this branch. read more

Pretty disappointed because this escape room was highly rated across many websites. I came with a group of 7 and many of us drove from 2 hrs away because of the hype. The room was well done, don't get me wrong. The 2 stars come from our experience with the host. There was a guy and a girl hosting, the guy told us to wait to watch a video and to set us up with instructions. We waited and then the girl led us up to a room, gave 0 instructions and just handed us a walky talky and left without another word. We were so confused and didn't even know the game started! We tried asking for further instructions and the introduction video - she said word for word "you guys don't need to watch it you will be fine". We didn't even know to ignore the stars until we asked, which wasted a LOT of time! Overall this really killed our experience. My family (hubs and 11 yr old daughter) went in for the Pharaoh's room while in town for Phish and we had a BLAST. Part of the reason it was so fun was JP. He was a wonderful host and helped us when we needed it, and not we didn't. My first escape room experience was amazing...thanks to JP and the Maze Room.
