Stumbled upon this super cute/cozy place after our hike, when Encanto was not dog friendly (as advertised, only since their patio wasn't open )! Their patio was open, lively, and warm Drinks menu was sooo creative! What we got: in the wood chipper (bourbon based), like a dolls eye, ko yao yai, penicillin, pitaya playa - hard pass on the "in the wood chipper" for me - everything else was fantastic, especially the "like a dolls eye" and "ko Yao yai" Food wise, we got the short ribs, tuna tartare, fried okra, and crispy chicken sando - honestly everything was pretty good. This is THE spot to go before a show at The Greek. They routinely play songs for the band you are about to see, before any concert at the Greek, which is a bonus for any music fan or concert goer. Excellent cocktails (if you like heat, and mezcal, try the Screaming Tree) and really tasty food. I don't think I've ever really eaten a truly delicious Turkey burger, they are always a tick away from sawdust, but I had one here. It was moist and flavorful. Oh, and the fabulous Amy Poehler was eating here, the night we came, (we left her alone, please do the same) so that made it extra cool. I'll get right to the point. Messhall's selling point for me is you can park here for $20 if you're going to a concert at the Greek, and it's a short 20-minute walk to the venue. Just tell the valet attendant you're going to the Greek, and he/she will direct you where to park and let you keep your keys. But besides that, I really like this restaurant. The food is excellent and the service is wonderful. We got the pulled pork sandwich and burger. The pulled pork sandwich is huge, double the size of a normal sandwich, and the pork is great. The hamburger has that char taste that's so backyard barbecue. read more

Had a great family birthday dinner at Messhall Kitchen . We all tried different things and agreed that all were great! The Brussel sprouts in asian fusion sauce starter was the winner! BBQ Baby Back ribs, sushi starters, C.A.B.Short Rib, etc...not a bad dish! I got the Cobb Salad with a huge piece of butterflied fried chicken breast on top of chopped greens with blue cheese crumbles-ate every bite! I love how big the patio is and how spacious the inside is, so rare to find in Los Feliz! There is metered parking and a valet in their parking lot. As appetizers we got the 30 min Biscuits and Mac N Cheese and for a main, I got the Mess Burger with fries. WOW those biscuits are worth the wait! So buttery, flaky and warm with an interesting fennel butter that I didn't love (but my co workers did), and strawberry/berry jam. The Mac N Cheese was SO rich, 1 portion was enough for 8 people haha. It was delicious though and so creamy and rich. The Mess Burger I was a bit disappointed with though. There was so much sauce that my bread was soaked and no one likes soggy bread... The fries were deliciously crispy and hot, but I wish there was some salt on it or any sort of flavor. Their ketchup was smoky! It shocked my taste buds. I was going to give it a 3, but considering the appetizers and the great service...boom 4! We've been going here for years enjoying their happy hour on the patio for business meetings. The staff is wonderful. Now, suddenly management has decided the only happy hour can be in their dark cold restaurant at the bar. Mind you it is very dark and it's a little difficult to hold a business meeting when four or five of you are spread out in a line at a bar. I have no idea why it was changed but it is the worst idea ever. So instead of our bill being $150 during happy hour, we got there early to sit on the patio and it was $300. First time checking out Messhall in Los Feliz. We dined here for lunch on a weekday for a company holiday function. We sat in a covered outdoor patio and thankful there was a heater to keep us toasty. My feedback is only based on one one entree I ordered which was the salmon. It was cooked perfectly and the broccolini and beets were a nice accompaniment. I wish there was something to balance the meal, like a piece of bread or potato. The flavors were all there but would have been even better with a hint of salt and acid. Temperature-wise, it could have been warmer too. I was never asked if my iced tea needed a refill even after several servers passed by our table. Service was quick but it could have been a little more attentive. Everyone at the table who ordered the pulled pork sandwich seemed to really enjoy it. Will have to give that a try next time I visit. Fair warning, if you're lucky to find it, street parking is metered for 2 hours. Otherwise valet parking is available for $8. read more

Excellent food, excellent service! We came here for a business lunch and it was not busy. We tried a ton of dishes and they were all great. The ceviche appetizer was my favorite!!! Typically I'm disappointed when I get ceviche anywhere but there's was seasoned and marinated perfectly!!! We also tried the Mac and cheese, Brussel sprouts and fresh made biscuits. The biscuits were served with 3 different butters and the saffron was my favorite. For the entree we ordered a chicken salad but asked if we could have the fried chicken instead of the grilled. They were happy to make the substation for us. All the dishes were pretty great and the service was quick. We also got to see a few celebrities dinning there if you're into that. Parking is shared with the chase bank next door and valet service only. Lots of meter parking if you're able to find a spot. He was basically the only one assigned to our group of about 20-25. The food was buffet style but the presentation was pretty cool and the food was yummy. Especially, for a casual lunch. The company ordered a BBQ platter, ribs, brisket, links, flank steak,ac n cheese, brussel sprouts, mushroom risotto, chicken, mashed potatoes, Cole slaw and biscuits. Everything was spectacular! Genuinely appreciate it. I've edited my review from the previous 1 star to 5 stars for the acknowledgment and customer service. I still stand by the actual mess burger itself. In a sea of smash burgers, still one of my faves. I've been ordering my favorite mess burger for years and the cost has gone up so much. This is annoying and disappointing but understandable with inflation and cost of food these days. But on top of that, I added an extra sauce to my order and when I got to the restaurant to pick up my order, I was made to wait 20 min for my sauce. By the time the extra sauce container came out, my burger and fries were cold. And what's even more annoying is that I was charged for the extra sauce to boot. I read about this place, so I was glad to have an excuse to go here. My husband and I have walked by here on occasion and the wood smell would catch our attention before we noticed the restaurant. I finally got an excuse! We made it a family visit with my husband's cousin who we haven't seen in a while because the pandemic - It was a great and memorable visit, but we lingered a little bit longer just to catch up and probably went through a shift change. What I learned from our meeting was this used to be a Brown Derby restaurant (one of many in LA). Since this was a late lunch, we started off with cocktails which the featured ones were on a menu on the table. I started off with a gin based drink, while my daughter started with a coffee liqueur drink, followed by a pitaya/tequila based drink. We both agreed on the latter cocktail, it was pretty and refreshing (so LA). We started with the salmon platter which had two slices of crusty bread, cream cheese, smoked salmon and mixed greens - perfect to share. For my entree, I decided on a house salad with grilled chicken on the side. The grilled chicken was on the spicy hot side. I think it would have been better if I just had the salad on it's own. The spicy chicken was fighting with the salad. My husband had the chicken and biscuits. I was surprised he didn't finish, but he was talking a lot and the chicken was too spicy for him. My daughter had the eggs benedict and said it was good, but would like to try something different next time. We all agreed that they were spot on with the cocktails and definitely would come back here for drinks. This place is also dog friendly where Fido can sit in the patio area. We came here before a show at The Greek. Apparently everyone there that night had the same idea. I have to say, I was so impressed. Often times when places get busy on show nights, the service and food quality goes down. That was definitely not the case. Our server was attentive. The food was delightful. We got the veggie burger, fish and chips, and the Cobb. All of them were all extremely yummy. We didn't get any of the BBQ, but it all looked so good coming out. They have a wide array of unique cocktails. The spicy margarita was the best I've ever had. And additional plus for this place, the music was ON POINT. Seriously, they know their audience. Great food and great ambiance! 2 large patios, one has access to a private bar area. Great for events and large groups or just a great place to chill in it's covered patio and eat great food! Inside seating also available. We ordered: The Catch, with oysters, shrimp, crab salad, ahi tostadas, salmon poke and scallops on the half shell. Scallops and Grits: unicorn grits, Nola Q, Cajun dust, and pepper jam. Pork Belly Cups: Napa cabbage, papaya salad, garlic rice, toasted cashews and opal basil. House made biscuits: buttermilk biscuits with fennel butter and House preserves. Everything was super flavorful and fresh. Everything was cooked to perfection, my pictures do not do it justice. The salmon poke was both sweet and savory in a light marinade that we ate with their perfectly salted house fried tortilla chips. The buttermilk biscuits were fire with the fennel butter and jam, so so tasty! Pork belly cups were super fresh with all the added greens and Papaya salad that it wasn't heavy at all. Grits and scallops, PERFECTION! Nothing was overly done, everything was super flavorful and fresh and even though we ate EVERYTHING, we weren't stuffed at the end. They also have a pretty big BBQ menu, they smoke all their own meat. We didn't have room for that today though. Great experience, food did not disappoint. Needed to find some food before our concert at the Greek Theater. The Mess Hall has a valet only lot, so we found street parking less than a block away. We sat at the bar and split the chicken sando and the pulled pork sandwich. I was impressed by the pulled pork sandwich, both in taste and the sheer size of it! The chicken sando was average -- not as good as any of the Nashville chicken joints in LA/OC. Sweet potato fries were good, but nothing unique. Ambience was nice and service was friendly, but busy at the bar. Overall, this place was better than I expected. Plus it was a short walk to the concert venue and saved us $30 parking at the Greek. After a 10 mile hike I was starving so I decided to drive near by to this restoring and First I would like to ask if the cook ever bothered to taste his food? I ordered the chicken crispy sandwich and a mess burger with sweet potato fries. It was hate at first bite for all of these items. You get an instant hit of salt! If you want to know what their food tastes like gargle salt and you'll be fine. Over priced and unsatisfying wish I didn't find this restaurant and went elsewhere! read more

Passed by this place a couple times over there years and finally Came for a graduation dinner. The venue itself is cozy and has a pretty chill vibe. We were in the outdoor patio so though it was private it was a bit noisy with the traffic, airplanes, and workers or valet talking to each other. The food wasn't too bad, good but nothing that excites me. The kale salad and house salad were refreshing, large in size so you could totally share. The roasted chicken was a pretty large portion, it was good but I felt the chicken was slightly dry. The short rib was really good and tasty, the meat was juicy and tender, mashed potatoes were light and flavorful. The banana pudding and brownie were not bad. First off, fries are included once again which makes everything better. The smok(e)y ketchup is still tasty, and the burger was prepared just how I wanted. I swear I'm not crazy, but I thought I read that this burger had crispy onion strings, yet this one definitely had a caramelized version (which is mentioned on their menu so I'm not sure why I thought differently). This was an extremely messy meal, but I'm relieved to report nothing spilled over into the car as I ate this on the way back. $18+tax/tip. I'd for sure get this again, but only if I was already in the area. However, I might do without the onions, and have the sauce on the side. I'm happy to add MESSHALL's version to my burger repertoire once again. read more

A fun place to relax and unwind with friends offering great food and drinks. Had the pitaya margarita and hubby had a dirty martini with one of their unusual gins. I had the salmon & broccolini and hubby had scallops and grits. We both enjoyed it very much. Our guests commented on how good their salads were and how perfect and fresh the croutons were. The decor is quite dark (think 90s grunge meets goth) and the noise level is quite high. Not the place for an important conversation as you will have trouble hearing. Came here in August and dine outdoors in their new backyard turf grass area. They have two an indoor room with bar, outdoor casual patio along with the newest addition of backyard patio vibe. I tried out the comfort food side of the menu and was not disappointed with the style of cooking here. Everything here is made fresh as you can easily tell by the temperature and texture of all the food here. The wings are done nicely here with a gorgeous slather layer of sauce on top to make them extra wet. No dry wings here! Of course for wet wings they give you a plate full of wet napkins to go along with it. Both the buffalo confit and seoul q wings are definitely a kick above mild/medium so be aware if your group can't handle spice. I also had the platter of grilled oysters with lemon and butter - although the flavor was great and the grilled lemon brought a ton of life to this dish, the way it was cooked made the oysters super tiny and almost escargot like once the heat got to it. The fish fry portion size is great. Three large fish filet piping hot temp and crunchy outside and soft inside. Super fresh and light made to order. The full rack of ribs here was also done nicely with a nice healthy slab of wet sauce on top. We also tried their triple sundae ice cream with all the fixings on top. Nice spot especially if you are in a big group, this place can definitely accommodate you with its large footprint and expansive menu.
