Solid food at a decent price Came here during weekday lunchtime. Parking is plentiful in the back. Restaurant has adequate seating and we got there a bit before the lunch rush so there was no wait at all for a party of 6. Menu was extensive, but I went with a carne asada famoso burrito (wet burrito). The waitress gave us some chips and salsa to nom on while we waited for our food (chips were bland and both salsas provided were not very flavorful) Food came after about 10 minutes. Burrito was large, and their enchilada sauce + cheese paired with the tortilla and meat pretty well. I was stuffed after I finished the burrito. Dined in on 3/30/24... the salsa with the chips was very flavorful and slightly spicy. The famoso al pastor burrito was AMAZING! Chicken in my burrito and taquitos was very dry and a bland, but the rice and beans had good flavor, and guacamole was fresh and well prepared without too much tomato and onions added. The staff was very nice, and the restaurant was clean. We were seated in a small room in the back that looked like overflow seating, because the place was packed. The only problem I had with the atmosphere was the band that came to play in the small overflow room. They were too loud for such a small place, and it was difficult to have a conversation with my husband. Overall, I'd definitely go again if in the area. read more

We used to go here back when it was in old Alvarado before it moved to its current location. This is our go to Mexican restaurant and we go at least twice a month. They serve you chips and salsa but beware the salsa can get very spicy and it's addicting sooooo don't over do it with the chips (I know it's so good)! I LOVE nachos however here their burritos are mouthwatering. I usually get a chicken or carne Assad and you really can't go wrong! There's also a little patio which is nice during the summer days. Service can be hit or miss but food comes quick even on a busy Friday night! Ps if you are looking for flavored margaritas just ask your sever as it isn't on the menu! read more

I love this place strictly for the grilled chicken taco salad!! I love that they give you lots of grilled meat and the salad comes with lots of veggies: lettuce, celery, carrots, tomatoes, and red onions. It also includes avocado, your choice of beans, rice, sour cream, a side of SPICY salsa & chips(my fav), all in a flaky , deep fried flour tortilla. I've had other options enchiladas, burritos, etc but I keep coming back for the taco salad. A must try if your in the area! read more

My family has been coming to Mexico Tipico for at least 15 years. My grandma Susie and my dad come here just about every weekend, and I make sure to come every time I visit union city. The owner, Lorena makes you feel at home. Walking through the front doors makes you feel like you walked right into her kitchen. The staff treats you like family. Everything about this place is inviting. Typically I get the shredded beef enchiladas (which are ALWAYS delicious), but we came for breakfast this time and I ordered the carne asada con huevos. It was delicious and big enough for my dad and I to spilt. We washed it down with a Cantarito, which was also yummy! I'd definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone and everyone! read more

I've never heard of this place despite living really close to it. My bf and I tried this place for the first time during my work's Christmas celebration. I thought the place was going to be huge but it turned out pretty small actually. There were a lot of choices from the menu. I never really tried too many Mexican foods so I wouldn't be a good judge. I picked a seafood platter and I was pretty excited to try it out. When it came out, tue serving was pretty huge! They put all the seafood inside the pineapple. It looked delicious! However, upon tasting it, it was soooo spicy!! I was dying. I'm alright with a little bit of spicy but this was crazy spicy. Even my bf thought it was too much. I guess I will write my review while I am waiting. I never really had a chance to experience their service, I always place my orders over the phone and pick them up in 30 min. Today, it was different I decided to order in the restaurant. Upon arrival, there was one person ahead of me picking up some food. The guy at the cashier acknowledged me and asked me to wait for a moment, I told him fine I am just ordering to go. Well that's when the moment became forever, after about 5 minutes of waiting I made eye contact to remind him that I was still waiting. He was already done with the previous costumer at the cashier and he instead of helping me decided to go ahead and start serving tables. When he saw me, he made a gesture like "you are next" ... Well that never happen. So I decided to call them while I was still there, and a nice lady pickup the phone I place my order and I guess I have to wait 20 min for it... However, I am still intrigued that nobody has asked me If I need help, I am still seating here waiting. I am glad I ordered over the phone. I guess the reviews are true... they do have a horrible service.... I am giving them 2 stars because they are in the business of serving people, and they are really bad at it, but their food is really good. Just order over the phone next time.... By the way... I am sharing the picture of the guy that made me wait ..."just a moment" trust me, it will take longer. read more

This is one of the best Mexican Restaurants in the Bay Area. Everything that I have tried was excellent, and the staff is super knowledgeable and friendly. I visited this place for my first time a few days ago for breakfast not expecting much, but I haven't stopped thinking of my meal! I ordered the carne asada chilaquiles (green) and they were amazing! The service was wonderful and attentive, refills were constant and the food was quick. The only gripe would be that the chips seem to not be homemade, but you can't have it all. I live 30 minutes away across the bridge but am definitely making the trip back. read more

Why have I not found this before!! A nice little hideaway spot with patio seating. Can we talk about the drinks? What are you in the mood for? Bucking mule? Mezcalita? Or how about a Hennchata? Whatever you choose you can't go wrong! And talk about packing a punch. Now the food... Everything from the fajitas to the burritos and even the shrimp cocktails absolutely delicious. Rude staff. The waitress was not patient or friendly . Took my friend out for her birthday . She actually recommended this place. But even she couldn't believe how the food came out at separate times. Some food was burnt. Waitress was rude , (I'm hoping it's not cause she was black but it rubbed off that way). This place is on a decline! Go else where as we will no longer support this business ! Plus their happy hour isn't so happy. Over priced! read more

Food has always been delicious and customer service has always been great. The way you can tell if a Mexican restaurant is authentic is their beans and rice. And their beans and rice are off the hook, kinda reminds me of my momma's cooking! Extra stars for the fact that they have handmade tortillas. I like this place very much..so much in fact, that my sister bought me a "Gift Certificate" for Christmas last year in the amount of $30 dollars..so on Saturday morning I went to go get a bowl of posole to go and handed the GC to the gal behind the table and she looked at it and said "it is "expired" I thought?? what? Sure as heck it said only good for 6 months and I thought..wait a minute in the state of california, you cannot have a GC or certificate that was bought with cash..expire..she refused to take it..ok so I paid cash and thought? I wonder how many other people she turned down because of this?? So I am waiting to hear back from a manger to see about this and I hope it can be resolved ASAP.. read more

Five stars for Ricardo. Tonight I came in to have a drink with some friends and the service was great but my review is for 3 days before the mask mándate ended. I happen to come to Mexico Tipico with some friends that wanted to stop by for a quick drink. Since I left the house without a mask I decided to wait outside. As we were getting ready to leave I needed to use the restroom. Small problem. . . I didn't have a mask. Ricardo went above and beyond with his kindness to find a solution to let me use the restroom yet not violate the restaurant mask policy. He was sweet and amazingly caring unlike the rude waitresses that stopped me on my way into the restroom. 5 stars for Ricardo he is an amazing person that knows what customer service is all about. read more

This is becoming a repeat spot for me. I enjoy the yummy food, the portions are are just right (meaning big), the salsa have a little kick (BOMB), the prices are reasonable, and did I mention that there are margaritas! What really surprised me about this restaurant is that I like the rice. The only rice that I usually eat is my mom's rice because it is the best. This place reminds me of the quality I can get from my family's cooking. If you don't believe me, you are missing out on this hidden spot. I highly recommend that you stop by for at least a margarita or possibly a special on the amazing lunch menu to tickle your taste buds. read more

I'm writing this review in regards to what happened to my family & myself this evening on 5/19/2022. Service throughout our time there was fine until our bill came. Our total bill had came out to $119.53. We gave the waiter $120 CASH & $20 extra for her tip. Total of $140 CASH. She goes back to her register then comes back within 30 seconds saying "Theres no money here, you only gave us $20" then she proceeds to look around on the floor like it fell. Meanwhile, I completely seen what she did. She took the $120 CASH put it in another check book & brought back the $20 TIP we gave her. Her & the rest of the staff proceeded to say they can't find the money. So as we sat there, I continued to tell them, run the cameras back & go look for yourselves. They started making up lies such as they can't do that, they have to wait for the owner & blah blah blah. While they try to make excuses. I had already called UCPD to request an officer to come out & check the situation. After UCPD arrived and we spoke to them, explaining what happened, they went to speak with the workers & what do you know, the $120 just appeared at the register table in another check book. I use to enjoy coming here but what they tried to pull on my family & myself is just PATHETIC. I will not be returning ever again & will not recommend this place. If you think people are that stupid nowadays, take a look in the mirror. Not sure if the owners will ever know about this situation or see this review but if you do, I recommend you taking a second look at the staff that was there on the night of 5/19/2022. read more

This used to be on Horner and moved to this location and I like it even better now. Great food and service! They are generous with the tequila in the margarita. I give one star. Because Junior is amazing as a server. We ordered the taco special for my hubby (was ok) and the chimichanga and enchilada plate for me. This was dis-fudgin-gusting the enchilada had canned sauce that tasted spoiled the beans was also canned and the rice was all clumpy and cold, the chimichanga was ok the outside was fried the chicken was hella bland and overcook. The passion fruit margarita was ok but I ask for sugar in the rim and got salt. Eww. I won't be back. Horrible food read more

If you want a fantastic, local Mexican go-to that ALWAYS delivers & never disappoints, here is your place!! My favorite item on the menu is hands down: the Molcajete that is loaded with chicken, linguica, steak & the most mouthwateringly tender nopales! It delivers on value because you are served a very generous serving which I never seem to manage being able to finish and I am quick to take my leftovers home because it tastes so great! The wait staff is all very friendly and attentive & the main bartender that's usually there makes a mean margarita!! My fave is the Cadillac! So refreshing & not all watered down like a lot of local Mexican spots are around here! Actually, it's one of my favorites I've ever had anywhere! I've been eating at Mexico Tipico since I was a kid and they were at their old location. The food is always very good. I've ordered for parties from here for many years also. Everything has always been delicious and my guests have always commented on the taste of the food. I myself, find their Chile verde to be a bit watery. I love their mole, posole and menudo. Their seafood platters are also very good. My family love their enchiladas, Chile rellenos, carne asada and burritos. Most of the staff is very nice. There is one gentleman though who seems a little moody. Maybe it's because he is rushed but twice in the past he has made me feel like I am bothering him when I place an order for a party. Now I think you place to go or party orders on line so that is fine. Their prices are on the high side. Still my favorite place for Sunday breakfast read more

This place is our usual Mexican food restaurant in the area, but oh my god. Ordering over the phone is impossible. 99% of the time that we call to order pickup, we never get through and end up going somewhere else. You guys lost our business! We used to go to their old location too and have been loyal customers up until now. This is ridiculous. read more

Blanca, just took my order and she was really nice I usually do not eat out because I'm picky when it comes to people making my food! But I had to try this out because my mom said their food was the bomb and I have to agree the food is the bomb and the presentation is everything! Tonight I'm very disappointed with Mexico Tipico, I work late tonight ordered 3 super burritos to take home to my family. Everyone started to eat realizing there is NO BEANS IN NONE OF THE BURRITOS. I called to let them know what happened because the burritos were dry especially my son's chicken burrito. They didn't believe me they said they put beans I said no you didn't he said we'll bring the burritos back I said I'm not bringing eaten burritos back it's covid and I'm tired. at least cut my bill in half he said no I'll give you a free burrito when you come back like I go there every week. read more

We ordered catering at the last minute and Mexico Típico came to the rescue. We ordered chile verde, steak ranchero, and mixed fajitas. The meat was so tender and very flavorful. All of our guests loved the food. I'm so glad we decided to cater. My cooking would have never tasted this good. read more

My wife did the smart thing and asked for recommendations. Mauricio suggested three dishes and she chose the last one- I think it was because something about tequila . When it was my turn, I proudly placed my order. Without missing a beat, Mauricio looked at me and said, "Bro, you can get that anywhere -- you should try this." He began describing the dish, then pointed to his dad sitting patiently at a corner table. "That's his invention." No more words needed. I said sold. Our dishes arrived and we immediately moved them to the center of the table so we could share both. I had the seafood fajitas -- shrimp, fish, fajita vegetables, and the most tender, flavorful pulpo I've ever had. All the seafood was cooked perfectly: tender but not falling apart. But the octopus and the sauce were something special. Chef Jose came to check on us and I told him about the pulpo. His eyes lit up as he began describing his preparation process -- then he said, "You want to see?" He walked me right into his kitchen and showed me the octopus being prepared. That moment alone was worth the visit. By the time we returned to our table, the restaurant had started to fill up. We continued enjoying our food, including the handmade soft tortillas that came with my dish -- don't sleep on those. Chef Jose stopped by again, sharing more stories, more passion, more of himself. Before we even finished eating, we were already planning our next visit for happy hour and dinner with the family. This is a perfect example of what Will Guidara calls Unreasonable Hospitality -- unexpected, personalized, and genuinely human. Mauricio and Chef Jose aren't just running a restaurant. I really liked the homemade tortillas here; they were so soft and went well with the shrimp and fajitas. Prices are in the higher end but portions are also huge! There seemed to be just a husband and wife when we dined. They were very welcoming and helpful with explaining the menu. Place was very spacious with lots of seating.

Disappointing Experience -- Not Worth the Price This was our first visit to this Mexican restaurant, and unfortunately, it will also be our last. The prices are extremely inflated for the quality and portion sizes. Plates are awkwardly oversized, clearly designed to make the small portions appear more substantial than they are. Communication was also an issue. The waitstaff struggled to understand basic requests in English, which led to a frustrating and disjointed dining experience. Timing was another problem -- our appetizers arrived at the same time as our entrées, eliminating the opportunity to enjoy the meal in courses. The children's soup was especially disappointing. It contained oversized chunks of undercooked vegetables that were both hard and impossible to eat comfortably -- not something you'd expect in a kid's menu item. The tortilla for the burrito was extremely wett/soggy, feel apart and looked more like a plate of slop. Overall, the food, service, and value did not meet even basic expectations. Sad Bad Experience. Party of 4 people Arrived 550pm no one came to our table until 610. Place was not super busy looks like they had at least 3 people working. We were ignored. So we missed happy hour conveniently for them. Its like they did it on purpose.... cleaning every table before we got chips at 610pm. The server was short and disappeared for long times. I finnaly waved someone down for a glass of water and he acted like it was an interruption for him. Ordered a margarita drink that was SUPER sweet and tasted like mixer only. We ordered our meals they got the meat wrong on two plates by the time we got our food the other two people were done. What was really inappropriate was we still said thank you when they did come to the table and were polite and they were not and never said your welcome. This is common language people use between each other at restaurants . Sorry to say but the Hispanic customers were being served faster, with smiles and thank yous. Anyways we wont be going back there are other places to eat. read more

Mexico Tipico in holds a special place in our hearts. We had our first date here, and returning one year later during Valentine's Day weekend was a perfect way to celebrate. The food is authentic, fulfilling, and provides a level of comfort you just can't debate. The birria tacos were absolutely delicious--packed with flavor and paired with an excellent sauce that elevated every bite. We also shared the chicken tortilla soup, which was so good we had to take the remainder home to enjoy later. To top it off, I ordered a Jamaica margarita. Normally, I'm not a margarita fan, but this one was the perfect balance of fruity and edgy--refreshing and not too sweet. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it a great spot for any occasion. Been here twice. First time the food was good, but small portions. Noticed a tiny amount of sour cream and no guac on the items I ordered which are pretty much standard at other places. I noticed that the staff was pretty much overwhelmed. Standing room only. Not enough places to sit inside. (It was cold outside). The second time I came there it was a Sunday morning. Again, staff seemed overwhelmed. They stuck us across from the bathroom- gross. And nobody came to follow up to see if we needed any thing else. Seemed that they forgot about us since we were on the side of the restaurant. Out of sight out of mind. We literally had to walk up to the bar and ask for a refill on our soda lol. I had a mixed experience at Mexico Típico when I visited this Saturday for Father's Day. First off, The chili verde quesadilla was excellent, flavorful with a nice kick, and the steak fajitas were sizzling, juicy, and well seasoned. Unfortunately, the birria tacos were somewhat a letdown. The meat lacked depth and was on the dry side, and the consommé didn't do much to help. Service was relatively slow, and the staff wasn't very attentive, which was surprising given that the restaurant wasn't particularly busy. The food was very disappointing. I ordered the Bira Tacos and there was no flavor whatsoever. All I tasted was spice and nothing else. Customer service was also horrible. I would rather eat school lunch than this even if it was free. DO NOT COME HERE. Stay safe yall. read more

A gem in Union City!I had the Chorizo con Huevo. Beans and rice were delicious. Rice was flavorful and fluffy. Chorizo sausage was full of flavors that was not to spicey. Nice environment to dine. Thank you for the wonderful service! read more
