You gotta try this place . It's somewhat a fusion , with some Italian food , and I want to say Greek or middle eastern . I had on the lunch menu , chicken / beef kabob combination with saffron rice and grilled vegetables . Would highly recommend this combination . Rice is supper fluffy and light . My brother was in town visiting and he decided on Mediterranean, so to Cafe Mezza we went. I'm not sure how this decision was reached, but the Yelp reviews, while mixed, seemed promising. While our waiter was friendly enough (I say that as nicely as possible having been a server), there were many times that our glasses ran dry and some kitchen help member came out to look after our beverages. Did I mention that we were one of three tables? Once our order was placed, I began to keep an eye on the clock. I do this out of habit at restaurants now because I worked so long at one, and even though this seems like somewhere where you are meant to eat slowly and enjoy your night out, I had a feeling it would still be a dreadful wait. The appetizer was okay, but I have certainly had better hummus and tabbouleh. Forty! Minutes! AFTER finishing our appetizer (appetizers can take a while if you're talking), our food was served. All told, from entering the restaurant to being seated to deciding to being served the appetizer to finally receiving our dinner, we sat around for an hour and twenty-five minutes. We were having a delightful conversation so it didn't feel absurdly unusual, but the facts still stand. My dish was a lemon fish concoction, but the lemon tasted like they used some crappy lemon pepper seasoning (you know, that fake citrus-y flavor that leaves an awful aftertaste in your mouth) instead of fresh lemon juice and the entire thing was so salty it was making me slightly nauseous. I powered through without giving off how dissatisfied I was because my brother seemed to thoroughly enjoy his flatbread pizza, and my mother was impressed by her mango chicken. To each their own, but that is why I'm giving it two stars instead of one. All told, I will not be going back here. When I arrived a little on my date,as soon I walked in the the atmosphere was nice, and quiet. Then a young waitress greeted me with open arms and presume to show me to a table. While waiting on my date to arrive I order the house margarita, which was different, and it included orange juice. It was a bit over powered with OJ, so I decided to request a wine instead. Not sure why this place has so many great reviews. The food is ok... Just ok not great! What is a turn off is the cleanliness and etiquette of the staff. The fries and garlic mayo was the only thing I really liked. The owner could make this place great by having the place properly cleaned and training the staff on how to serve and have better etiquette. A sad let down...visited café mezza on a Friday night with friends in what we hoped would be a very enjoyable dinner. I've been here a few times before and have always enjoyed the food. What this place needs to work on, is Service. I'll say it again, SERVICE. Saying service is slow here would be equivalent to saying the sun is hot. I don't know what the problem is, if it's the wait staff or the kitchen. Either way, taking 20+ minutes to get an appetizer to the table (shrimp campechana, i.e. a ceviche like dish with a few grilled shrimp) is insane. I also noticed other tables shooting similar frustrated and questioning looks toward the kitchen. Our waiter apologized for the delay. While a Friday night, the dining room wasn't empty yet it was not overcrowded either, so it was difficult to understanding the real issue.. Much like the appetizer, our dinner plates were just as slow to get to the table also. We'd finished the appetizer and shared two plates of pita chips by this time. To add insult to injury my meal arrives only for me to learn that my entree is not in fact my entree. The waiter and kitchen apparently had some confusion on what the order was, and while typically I do not, I had no choice but to send the incorrect dish back.My waiter informed me that there'd have to be a change to the pasta that I ordered, as the typical pasta which came with my entrée would take much longer to cook. In as much as my dish was not the meal that I'd ordered, this dinner experience was not what I'd expected either. Let me state from the outset that my overall impression of this restaurant is highly positive. This experience is certainly the exception ... but it did occur, and management needs to address it. On this visit, we were unfortunately seated a few feet from a boisterous, obnoxious and somewhat intoxicated party of about twenty ... it certainly affected our enjoyment of the evening. Changing tables wouldn't have helped, as the group was in the literal center of the dining room. There is private space available ... that's where these folks belonged. Management made no effort to ask them to be a bit more considerate, but since their tab was pretty substantial .... The food (a very eclectic menu) is nicely prepared, well-seasoned and beautifully presented. Portions are more than ample, and vegetables are very fresh ... grilled, too (nice touch). But ... For the first time in at least five years (and we dine out regularly), I had to send back an entree. I ordered the pork chops, and could have nailed them to the bottoms of my shoes ... they were that tough. I immediately knew there would be an issue when I had difficulty cutting one with a steak knife. To his credit, the server whisked the plate away, and my replacement dish (ahi tuna) came relatively quickly. I very much enjoyed it, although I should have been asked how I'd like it cooked. It came a bit more done than I prefer, but was tasty nonetheless. The accompanying shrimp were outstanding. We'll likely try Mezza Grille again, but not for a while ... and we'll be certain that there are no large parties dining there when we do. There are plenty of choices, so I'll be sure to avoid the pork chops next time. read more

I come here all the time and it has finally started getting popular! They used to have a pick 3 apps, which should come back so you can get there great tabbouleh, hummus and red pepper! I tried Cafe Mezza & Grille tonight on a whim. We're from out of town and noticed that Westheimer had a crazy number of restaurants and a very diverse selection. Being very hungry, we decided to take a cruise down the road to see what we'd run into. My wife and I love Mediterranean cuisine so when we spotted Mezza we decided to give it a go, even if it is Mediterranean-American fusion. Now, a little disclaimer before I continue: I feel that it's a little difficult to rate a place on one visit *if* you're rating on the mainly on the taste of the dish (which I have seen a lot of people do). Because, well, if a dish is not to your liking, it's only one dish of many and you may find something else you really enjoy. Now, onto Cafe Mezza: My wife and I both decided we wanted the Shawerma wrap since this is one of our favorite dishes at other Mediterranean places we've been to. Then we got the cheese raviolis for our children (remember, its fusion). The Shawerma wrap was really large, we could have ordered just one and split it. It set us back $10.95 and came with a choice of sides. If I remember correctly the choices were fries, fresh fruit, and hummus. Since we ordered hummus as our appetizer, we went with the fresh fruit. I have to say I didn't really like the Shawerma. It reminded me not of traditional Shawerma, but it was more reminiscent of an Indian curry. I like Indian curry, but it just wasn't working for me with this particular wrap. The garlic-mayo sauce that it came with was great though and helped me to eat my fair share of the wrap. The fresh fruit I chose as the side came with a pretty unique sauce that I'm not quite sure I can accurately explain except for the fact that it went well with the fruit, so that was really good. Oh yeah, we got delicious pita chips as a complimentary starter. They had a really good flavor to them and were crispy. They came with olive oil for dipping and some herbs as well. The hummus as the appetizer was really good. I felt it strayed from authentic hummus a bit in that it tasted like it had a fair amount of sour cream in it. This was not a bad thing at all as it was very tasty. Our server, Leo, was excellent - very polite, proactive, and attentive. So, to wrap it up: Complimentary Pita chips A Hummus B+ Main Dish - Shawerma Wrap D Fresh fruit w/ sauce B Service A+ Being that main dish holds a lot of weight, I give this place a 3 (for now).
