We've been waiting over a month for service. Michael and Son installed our mini-split system ~4 years ago. This summer, it stopped cooling. They sent a technician to diagnose it (took three weeks to schedule, but I get it, it was peak summer in DC), who said that there was a leak somewhere and he'd need to return to do a leak test. This was on a Friday and he said that someone would be calling me early the following week to schedule a follow-up appointment. It's been over a month and still no one has called. I have contacted Michale and Son five times and talked to five different customer service reps who were all quite nice, apologetic, and confused as to why no one has called us. Each time they call the service department to figure out what the delay is and each time they told me that no one answered but they'd email/follow up with service to ensure that someone called me back. We are now in the "call every day" part of the process to get some answers. They've effectively ghosted me. I just don't understand how a national, well-respected and well-reviewed company, who did good work with us in the past, is now just ignoring us. I'd really love some answers, or at least for our system to be fixed, as it's been over a month in the middle of summer. read more

After they no showed the appointment I called to find out that not only did they cancel the appointment without alerting me, they were unable to solve the problem. Because they didn't have the decency to let me know I spent all day waiting for them instead of finding a plumber who COULD complete the service. I hired Michael & Son Services to install two 1.5-ton HVAC systems in my home. After installation, I started experiencing serious performance issues with the system. It became clear that there were both sizing and component problems. I reported the issue during the warranty period, and the company acknowledged part of the problem and promised to replace the compressor. However, they have refused to address other major issues or provide any schedule for repairs. I've followed up multiple times through phone and email but have received no response or action. To this day, my system remains unrepaired. The lack of follow-up, professionalism, and responsibility is unacceptable--especially for a company of this size. If you're considering using Michael & Son for HVAC installation, I strongly suggest looking for another contractor who stands by their work and honors their warranty. read more

They are not inexpensive ... but they get the job done right the first time. Just had our HVAC serviced. It would not function in the heat. It took the M&S service technician ten minutes to find and fix the problem. I discovered the HVAC was not functioning this morning. Fast service, requested last night and here this am. I explained to the scheduler what the problem was (in detail) but it was not relayed correctly and the plumber did not have the part. This led to a 2 hr delay since he had to go get one. He was very friendly and explained everything to me. Not this fellow's fault, but the service was very expensive for a part that was probably $400 at Home Depot. Try 6 x more than the part. It was an urgent problem so I went ahead and had it done but feel ripped off by the company. I've used this company in the past but would hesitate to recommend them. read more

I had a technician named Haider Ali come to my home to make a repair to an attic furnace. This clown had the audacity to remove from my system and leave with a simple three amp fuse from my furnace to make the system inoperable for the purpose of selling me a brand new system. This guy didn't even inspect the outside unit, but still immediately said the entire system had to be replaced, when all that was needed was a simple fuse replacement. I could sniff this guy's BS out from a mile away so I had another company, DONMAR, an ethical and honest company come out today. They replaced the 3 amp fuse and the system is up and running working as normal. 10 minutes. In and out. This was a fuse replacement and nothing more. Haider, and the people who employ him, Michael & Son are the most unethical, unscrupulous, dishonest thieves out there. I can't stress how terrible they are to work with. What a shame that a company has to resort to dishonest tactics like that in order to pay for their ads on the radio. Absolutely the worst. I hope this gets around to everyone and I hope that people wake up and stop using Michael and Son. And for the Technician, "Haider Ali" I hope his certifications are revoked and this criminal is reported and he never enters into people's homes so he can spread more of his BS. read more

It took 3 technician's and two days to replace a single part. Multiple phone calls after first technician left saying he can't fix it and saying he will send a plumber. Two hours later no plumber. Called M&S and receptionist told me it would be an after hours charge of $175. I said have supervisor call me. No call so I called another M&S in leesburg talked to nice lady who sent someone out but once again he didn't have the part. Finally a third technician was sent out the next day and fixed the problem promptly. Took only 30 minutes! Kudos to Raymond Roberts ! Why didn't M&S let me send a picture of the part like I first said ? All this time wasted and still a $500 - oh $125 discount until I complained to supervisor then discount $300 which started at 800! I was informed $200 was for county inspection. Plus my tenant had to take off work two times. Come on MIchael and Sons you guys can do better than this ! And this was for an inside the house propane leak! Never again. read more

When our Tuesday started out with no water pressure, Micheal & Son were able to send a plumber out later that day. Eric spent multiple hours ruling out all the possible causes, keeping us informed of his progress at each step of the way. When he determined the cause was a failed well pump, he provided a worst case estimate and explained how it might be lower than that, depending on the state of the pipe to the pump. He returned early Wednesday morning with Joe and the two of them worked hard to get our well pump replaced, despite extremely cold temperatures. We were impressed by how friendly, motivated, and knowledgeable both Eric and Joe were. We recommend Michael & Son highly. read more

I specified when signing up that the most important thing is that my dampers were adjusted properly. The person who came out did not know how to set them and didn't understand that heat rises so turning off the AC on the bottom 2 floors is going to have the AC running 24/7. He did it anyway and broke the damper adjuster (it was rusted) so now my AC is stuck in that position until that part is replaced and guess what, my AC is running 24/7 battling the outside heat and the heat coming from the bottom 2 floors and despite the rush on the part, it's been 1 1/2 weeks and I've heard nothing from them. It's probably costing me $200 a week extra. This company always seems to find something that needs to be replaced or fixed, usually between, $200-$1200. They wanted $600 just to change out 2 sinks that I'd be supplying that will probably take less than an hour. I just feel taken advantage of and will be looking for someone new, although it seems all these companies are the same. I would give this company a rating 0f 1 out of 5, the same rating I'd give 4 other companies in this area. Just an example of the other companies, to help you decide on which to choose. I had 4 companies give me a price for an AC fix, because the 1st won said my entire HVAC system should be changed because it was 11 years old and just doing the AC would be expensive, so they quote $22,000. The other 3 said the same thing and this was a year ago. One salesman wanted to go upstairs to go over the pricing after I mentioned that it was pretty cool on the bottom floor and easier on my back and he said he had back problems too. The minute I said that he wanted to go upstairs. I thought he needed a table and I thought that it would be easier on his back, however when we got upstairs he stood up the entire time. I finally realized that he wanted me to be hot, and in pain so I would just be so uncomfortable I'd sign off on anything. At that point I told him to leave and discovered later that he stole my damper stick on the way out, which I've been unable to replace. So I had a friend of a friend come over to look at the system and spent about 10 minutes, fixed the AC, said my HVAC system was perfectly fine and charged me $200. So the grass is not green here, there or anywhere unless you know someone. I'm so sick of workers coming to my home and lying to me and I believe they particularly take advantage of single women. Getting back to the serviceman who came over, he was nice and tried his best but just didn't know what he was doing on a pretty basic task for an HVAC serviceman. So I've had to ask for a more experienced technician to do a simple HVAC task that is still not done. read more

What started out as a plumbing repair turned into a water line install, how water tank flushing, and an annual contract. One thing we dislike is the incredible markup on products. Michael and Sons installed our air conditioner 10 years ago. We had the warranty, we paid to have the membership for support if anything went wrong at any time. We had checks done every years as I was told was required to keep the warranty and membership up to date. I paid for the extra work the technicians suggested with cleaning the outdoor unit and such from every inspection. Well, this summer, right when the extra heat hit in June, our EZ Trap cap was not tight enough to keep the sensors connected and the unit stopped. I called for an emergency support, and was told they had nothing in their schedule for over 3 weeks. They gave me no other option to help us. I could not wait 3 weeks. I had to have air immediately and it was the hottest time of the summer. I have family members with health issues that need air conditioning. So I called another HVAC company who came out that afternoon and provided a temp fix in the cap and then replaced the EZ Trap 2 days later. Of course I had to pay that company for their work. When I called Michael and Son back to get some compensation for the fact that they were not there for me, the supervisor proceeded to blame me for not having techs come out twice a year for preventative maintenance. She also blamed me for not using their electrical and plumbing options within the membership which had nothing to do with the HVAC system. Nevermind the fact that when I did have their plumber out for an issue once years ago, it cost me $1000 and he still never fixed the issue so I had no intention of using their plumbing service ever again. I already have an electrician company I trust. I was only using their membership for the HVAC system because they installed it, and when I needed them, they were not there for me. So I fired them. I do not recommend Michael and Son for any of their services. They will not honor their commitment to provide support when you need it. read more

We needed a contractor with plumbing license to cut a segment of pipe out of our backyard. Someone recommended Michael and sons to us. I called the company and the customer service girl on the phone was really nice and helpful. We quickly made appointment. The contractor came on time for the appointment. However, he was charging a huge amount to cap the pipe (over 400) and additional charge (more than 200) to take the cut off pipe away. The total sums of the project was quoted for more than 600, to cut off a segment of gas pipe (about 8 feet?) and take it away. He asked me to make the decision on the spot. I decided not to take their service and sought for a second opinion from another plumber company. The other plumber was great and did the job cleanly. He charged 150 for the whole thing! I am so glad that I didn't cave under the pressure. I got the recommendation of Michael and sons from a friend, so they should be a decent company. However, this overcharging experience is horrible. I will avoid this company in the future. My advice, get a second opinion from another company if you have to work with them. read more

We've been Michael & Son customers for almost a decade and we're also home care agreement members. Today was our annual heating inspection and I wanted to take a minute to say what an amazing technician we were assigned. Tim H. demonstrated a deep understanding of Carrier Infinity systems, going into the thermostat's service settings to have it run a system check prior to his inspection. That step is one I do not recall any other technician performing (usually I am just told to turn the heat on and raise it a few degrees to start the cycle). Tim also performed the most in-depth diagnostic and cleaning I have ever seen, and I always watch the process. Going forward, I will absolutely make sure that Tim H. performs my next AC inspection and then all subsequent annual inspections. read more

We had power outage in our neighborhood. once power came back on, our house was without. The main 200amp breaker in the panel was tripped but the lever would not allow you to reset it. Call M&S they told me an extra charge for Emergency service. Tech showed up 3 1/2 hours later around 6:30pm so now there was an after hours charge as well... so my bill was already $435 before he could actually look at it. I explained the issue and showed him the breaker. He asked if I had tried to reset it, I explained it will not move, like the lever is jammed. He too tried and concluded the panel box over heated and the main breaker was fried. quoted me $17K to replace the entire panel box (and that didn't include the $435 trip charge). I argued the fact its just the main breaker, but he was adamant its the entire panel and he talked to his manager and that his manager would not allow him to just change out the breaker. In addition, he also told me it could be between 2-7 days for the work to be completed as he would need to order all the parts. Reminded me, this was a Saturday and he wouldn't be able to check for parts until Monday. Can you imagine being without power and AC for a week during 90 degree weather??? I told him no thanks and showed him the door. Monday morning I was on the phone at 6:00am, found a replacement main breaker just 10 minutes from my house and all said and done, cost me a couple hundred bucks to have my power back on. The breaker nor the panel were overheated or fried. The only issue was the plastic lever that trips the power just broke off inside of the housing and therefore could not be reset and needed replaced. All I can say is avoid this business at all costs. 100% scam service when they try to charge you $17K for $500 worth of work & parts, plus $435 just to tell you what you already knew. read more

I had a leaky garbage disposal that was leaking into my basement ceiling. I called several companies but no one could come out at night. I called Michael and Sons, which I had used before. They told me they could get someone there soon but it would cost me $160.00. I wasn't thrilled at the amount but needed service. When the tech arrived, he looked at the garbage disposal and told me I needed a new one. The one that I had was only a few years old. I had been experiencing slow water drainage so weeks. He told me he would look at that after. He started looking at replacement disposals. The bottom of the line disposal which came with no warranty was going to be $900.00!!!! The next one would cost $1300 and would come with a 3 year warranty..Shouldn't any product installed come with a warranty? While he went to the truck to get the disposal, I googled prices. Disposais ranged in price from $150.00 to $900.00. The disposal he was going to use was $150.00!!! He was charging me $900.00 + $160.00 for the evening visit. When I approached him about the price, his comment was " well, everyone needs to be paid" After installing the disposal, he didn't kid me the sink would have to be snaked, abd I would have to wait until Thursday for someone to come. He had the nerve to try to sell me a service plan. if I paid $198.00 a year, he would discount the price of the disposal by$90.00. I was shocked, I asked him so I can spend $198 a year to save $90.00.. That is beyond ctazy. I don't know if I was scammed because I was a single woman in the house.. MICHAEL AND SONS ARE THEIVES AND CRIMINALS.. I plan on going on any social media I can to warn people of this unacceptable business practice.. DON'T USE MICHAEL AND SONS EVER!!!! read more

He pointed out some fixes that I needed to prevent problems in the future and discovered an easy fix to our water softener that another plumbing company quoted thousands to replace. I have used Michael & Son multiple times for HVAC and plumbing needs. I have always been able to get in touch with an actual person and typically have been scheduled within a few days. As I learned, for emergencies, same-day appointments are also available. They are a bit pricey, but sometimes you get what you pay for. Most recently, Alex came the rescue and identified the source of water in my basement (harder than it seems) and the issues contributing to it, and outlined a course of action. I was worried that I'd have to go all weekend into the beginning of the week with water accumulating in the basement since I discovered it late Saturday afternoon. Instead he came out that afternoon and by Sunday evening everything was fine (including the installation of new equipment, pipes, etc.) and I could rest easy. Great service! Michael & Sons installed a new mini split for us this winter. That work was fine and we had no complaints. That work cost about $16,000, and came with two years of free maintenance on the unit. This spring, a family of birds got into one of the vents to the unit and built a nest and destroyed the vent. I used the online service request system, and Michael & Sons sent someone out to fix it. However, when when he arrived he had none of the necessary materials or parts because no one had told him what the actual problem was. He put in an order for the parts through the parts department, and told me they would be in touch to schedule a follow up visit when the parts were in. Since then I have reached out to Michael & Sons three times with no success. There is no sign of the parts beyond the initial order, and the parts department doesn't seem to respond to anyone, even their own customer service and technicians. The only thing their customer service representatives can do is to keep putting in the same request over and over again with no success. It is ridiculous. I don't blame the customer service people, but I do believe that any other HVAC company who were being paid would have solved this problem in the first week I reported it. I cannot help but think that it is because we are under a warranty in which we will not be paying for service or parts that we cannot get any service or parts. This is an appalling business model. Even if it was an issue of parts not being available due to tariffs, etc. it's absolutely insane that there is no response or follow up from the company. They actually sell a service agreement plan and I cannot imagine how that works because if I was still paying for an ongoing agreement (vs. having already paid $16,000) would the parts department magically become responsive and the service actually exist?? I feel like such a sucker. Despite their initial competence and solid work, I would not recommend Michael & Sons to anyone. Zero stars. read more
