Not a restaurant. Mikado moved to a new spot on 14th Street. The interiors are very nice. Beautiful decor and pleasant seating areas. But that's all you get. There is literally NO service. You order from an app and some dirty people from the back dump your food on the table. Truly disappointed. Horrible loud music playing on the sound system must have been picked by the young kitchen staff. I had to get up from the table and ask for my drinks. No one checks on your table. Not even to re-fill water glasses. Food was decent. Not great. Too many other options in the neighborhood to return to this disaster area. I wasn't expecting too much from Mikado because I chose to eat here based on the convenience of the location rather than from hearing good things or reading reviews on Yelp. It is one of many, many sushi places of its kind in New York City, and an overall mediocre experience. The hot sake was not good at all and I was very disappointed. I've had hot sake before even at similar average quality sushi places and it was way better than this. I didn't even finish the drink because it wasn't worth it. I initially was very happy to see they had a hijiki salad on the menu, and ordered that and the seaweed salad. The portions, when they came out, looked huge! When I arrived, I was ignored by the entire staff and had to call out multiple times until someone came, although they could clearly see me there. They all spoke either korean or chinese, and just asked my name. No info on the food or why the delay. After I insisted on where my order was, the rudest person ever came screaming from the back saying they were still preparing. It took still 15min for it to be ready. I used to live in Jersey City so I would find the area around Mikado as a bit of a halfway point between myself and many others in the city. The staff is kind and attentive. The food is good and reasonably priced. I would certainly recommend giving them a shot if you're in the area and need a nice sushi fix with the ability to sit down and enjoy your food. So after 5 years of frequenting this place, it has probably earned a review. Sad to say that I can only give it three stars as the quality has really steadily declined over the years. Like any relationship, Mikado and I were hot and heavy but after a few late arrivals, some last minute cancellations with unbelievable explanations, and the discovery of other options (I couldn't resist the reliably consistent noodle spot next door) it just was not going to go anywhere serious. I would frequent this place like metal to a magnet. With an $11 sushi lunch special, a fingerlicking shrimp fried rice and the occasional hibachi canoodling, life was good. They were quick and the drinks would flow. It was the lunch times and then it was the worst dinner times. The delivery and service times in-house eventually started getting longer (while the sushi got room temperature and the Hot food was lukewarm). And then I just could not deny that no matter how many times I politely and logically explained the issue--it was falling on deaf ears. The place would have remained a Star in my eyes if we had ended a few years sooner. Ah well. Our breakup was smooth, even if not painless-- that last order was so disappointing. When one orders chicken and veggie tempura and can't find the chicken in the dish, like my good friend, you simply ask the server about it. What is not expected is when the server grabs your chopsticks, the ones you've been using to eat with, and uses them to grab the hidden chicken in your dish and put them aside so you don't forget that they're there. Yes, our server used my friend's already used chopsticks. Pretty filthy. We just raised our eyebrows in shock and continued eating. Unfortunately, my yaki soba was drenched in so much soy sauce I couldn't even eat it. My shrimp was so overcooked it turned white and was nearly inseparable. My rolls were big and fresh but I was slightly disappointed as I would have liked to have more avocado. Also, service wasn't too attentive about coming over for water refills. After walking 49 blocks (was on 63rd and decided to walk to the Namaste Bookshop on 14th), my partner and I were super hungry so we grabbed some sushi. I haven't had sushi in 6 years! There's this soup that stars with an 'M' and has itty bitty tofu chunks and seaweed in it. I wasn't a fan of that soup, but the sushi I was a fan of. $5 for 6 rolls, the price for the stuffed belly I had was great. Our bill with two soups, two orders of rolls, two sodas came out to be $17! I did a happy dance in my seat. The customer service was decent, there's always room to be better. The location is nice and on a busy block, but honestly what block isn't busy in NYC?! Area inside is super clean, lights are dimmed- gives you that romantic feeling or the feeling of being in a Chinese mob and knives begin to fly over your head (I just finished watching a Kung fu film- forgive my imaginative thought). Warning: I don't eat fish. This isn't really a "fair" review, not being a fish eater and all, but even with that being said, this is my go-to sushi lunch spot in the area. For $8.95 you get a miso soup, house salad and 2 rolls off of a pretty generous options list. (I think it's $11.95 for 3 rolls.) Easily the best bang for your buck and I love that you get both soup and salad and don't have to choose. Many call my order not "real" sushi, but I still love my veggie rolls from here. The sweet potato roll is my favorite, and it's always perfectly crispy. I've also had the chicken teriyaki and bento box option which are also good deals for lunch. The service is so quick, lunch here can usually be done in a half hour, if you happen to be in a rush. The restaurant itself is pretty small, and they definitely do a lot of take-out, but there's always a table open for lunch whether I come in alone or with 1-2 friends. I've brought quite a few people here, since it's so cheap and my brother's complaint was that the wasabi wasn't nearly spicy enough. Considering I can handle a good amount of it, I'll have to agree that it's weak. Other than that, no complaints here! read more

The lettuce was fresh (for the salad) and I loved the plentiful amount of ginger dressing they gave. The miso soup was a little too salty for my taste (did they add salt to the miso soup?? miso is salty by itself, maybe they put too much miso paste?). The beef was overcooked and not tender at all; there was barely any teriyaki taste too. I had a hard time finishing it because it was really rough and rubbery to eat. The california rolls were delicious even though the rice kept falling apart. I have to say, though, that they were probably the best part of the meal along with the shumai. I will probably return to try another dish since beef teriyaki is usually a hit or miss. Maybe chicken will be better? Or I'll try more of their rolls. read more

I requested to substitute the white rice that came with the bento for brown rice, and offered to pay extra if necessary. The manager/server called me 2-3 minutes after I placed my order to confirm the brown rice, with no additional charge! Yay! 2) Food: the portion size is good, six pieces California roll, miso soup, green salad and steamed shumai are all included in the $9.50 lunch bento price. I expected the curry to be Japanese curry, however, and was slightly disappointed that it ended up being a Chinese curry :( slightly oily, but still delicious! When my dasher arrived to pick it up, they told them to tell me to cancel my order. Of course, if I cancelled I would still be charged (since it was already being prepared) and I would have no food. This is really yummy! I've been there twice for lunch now, mainly because it's right around the corner from my office. I've gotten two different bento boxes. One was beef katsu and the other was shrimp and vegetable tempura. First of all, the atmosphere in there is really great and the staff is very friendly. Then they bring you soup and salad. The salad is pretty standard, but for some reason, their Miso soup is literally the best Miso soup I've ever had. I look forward to it every time I go, even when it's 90 degrees outside! The bento box is really nice. The rice is sweet, and it comes with shumai. Normally I dont' really like shumai because they taste too fishy, but these are really sweet and delicious. The california roll is not so special, but it's just a california roll after all. The beef wasn't as good as the tempura, but it was good tempura! I'd be lying if I said this place was ordinary! I come here for all my celebrations (My birthday, Valentines Day, my Musical Concerts etc..) The service is fast and efficient l. Our waiters were very nice and were very respectful about checking in on us. They didn't excessively return to our table but they also didn't neglect us. The food was delicious! Just ate here and regret not reviewing the reviews first. Ordered squid dish (cant remember the name) but the squid was frozen ice cold when biting into it when it should have been cooked. The crab salad and the mango crab salad are my favorite appetizers. Tried the Rock and Roll for the first time and I was very happy with this choice. I rarely write reviews but this was so poor I had too. As soon as the food was delivered (late) I looked into the bag and could tell that this sushi was bad, the fish was definitely not fresh. I didn't order anything complicated, just regular sushi rolls but all of the fish looked slimy, dull looking and the rice was hard. I threw it straight in the trash. I usually get the 3 roll maki combo, which comes with both a soup and a salad on the side for $14. They also have bento boxes priced around $10-11 that come with a pretty decent amount of food too. The one time I ate in for lunch, I spent almost $20 after tax and tip and wasn't too impressed with what I paid for. The service was a little lack luster and people that walked in after us got their food before we did. All in all, it is a solid option for take out, but not much more than that. read more
