I would definitely recommend going to this restaurant. Their service is fast and their food tastes delicous! My first time there, I ordered something and within the next couple minutes, it was served! It doesn't take long for the food to get to you - but I assume it also depends on the day and time. This place was chosen only b/c we needed a pit stop while enroute from the east side to west side to catch a show by foot. Rice was "crunchy".... spicy salmon wasn't spicy and was minced.... gross. Mikado Bistro is like my ugly step child that I don't want anyone to know of. It's not one of those secret spots that you love to share with friends. It's a secret spot that you'd rather not tell your friends how often you go. Mikado is my crack. I don't love it but I keep coming back. Why?! Because it's very close. Because it's cheap. Because it's better than a dollar slice, Chipotle, McDonalds and I don't wanna eat Qi again. Also, because I'm too lazy to walk to 8th ave. Wow. Those are terrible reasons, now that I see it in writing. Like I said.. Mikado is affordable. I usually get the 2 roll combo which comes with a soup and salad for 8.50 (comes out to 9.25). I recently had the spicy yellowtail and it was a little off, but the amount of times I've gotten sushi at this joint--I wouldn't be worried. I've also had the chirashi, and that's good too. I think it's 12 bucks during the lunch special. Aside from the prices, there's really nothing special about the sushi. The staff is small but they are friendly and will not bother you. I've been coming here for a long time. For whatever reason, it's not so crowded when I usually go (usually around 7, usually during the week), and perhaps as a result, it's usually nice and quiet. You can enjoy your food and stay for as long as you'd like. The wait staff are very friendly. The food is perhaps unremarkable, but it's certainly good and the portion sizes - especially the salads, based on what I've tried - are large. Prices are extremely reasonable. I've stumbled onto this place totally by accident and the lunch prices seemed to be reasonable. Overall, it is not bad but it is nothing more than a supermarket quality sushi rather than the super awesome sushi that can be had. Got sushi + sashimi lunch, which came with a salad with ginger dressing and miso soup. The good: - Miso soup was absolutely positively perfect. Quite a few much better Japanese restaurants flunk it. Oh if only the rest was as good as the miso soup. - I saw one of the helpers fillet a salmon in front of me. Having done that myself dozens of times I can attest simply by looking at it that the fish was very fresh. Unfortunately, this only applied to salmon. - takes LevelUp and gives $1 credit. this means the lunch was under $20 including taxes and tip. The bad: - salad with ginger dressing would have been better left out - someone either that the lettuce needed to be dried or had such a weak dressing that it did not matter. My money is on "did not know". The questionable: - California roll was bizarre. Neither of the two sushi chefs nor the helper knew how to make the sushi rice. Sushi rice != sticky rice. - the rest of the fish was supermarket sushi grade. Maybe tuna was slightly better than that. - I swear the soy sauce could have as well been diluted in water. Nice staff, and some good sets, but I felt my fish was not fresh and even decided not to finish my sushi/sashimi set just because I worried I might end up ill from eating it (and I am no food waster). I just cannot see now some reviewers can say the sushi is not fresh. We've been here several times and never had anything that wasn't fresh. The bento boxes are great, especially with the fried oysters (one of the few Japanse restaurants that have them). Everything was fresh, tasty and served by a delightful staff. No, its not a 5-star restaurant with absolutely amazing sushi, but it is definitely satisfactory when you're looking for that inexpensive sushi fix. We ordered 3 rolls for dinner, Rainbow Roll, Oyster Tempura, and Dancing Eel. The Dancing Eel was very good, and the Rainbow Roll was one of the better that I've had in awhile. I would not order the Oyster Tempura again, but I'm glad that I tried it. The servers were not overly friendly, but they got the job done and were very attentive with refilling the water. I have spent my entire time living in NYC trying to find a place with the perfect hibachi chicken. This isn't it, but it was decent. There was no one else in the shop around dinner time, so service was pretty great. The food was good as well, but it was just... missing something. I've been going here for years and this is the first time I've had horrendous service which was enough to make me not want to ever return. The food is usually very good, but this time around, I noticed how bland the sushi was. It didn't taste right and definitely wasn't fresh... The waitress was nice at first but then quickly became super aggressive. She kept trying to take my plate away before I was done eating. It was as if they were trying to get the table cleared for the next customers. It's a small place so I can understand the urgency in wanting to have more clear tables, but that's extremely poor customer service. She then placed the bill on the table before we were done eating. When we were getting out payment, she returned to the table to inform us that tip wasn't included in the bill... I looked around and she was doing this to several other tables. Armature hour. Should have know the Chinese sushi place would not make sushi properly. The rolls were shoved together on a plate like a 5 year old assembled them. The rolls were stuck to each other at the seam so when you pick them apart the contents went spilling out. The avocado was not ripe. I was not given a soy sauce container. I grabbed takeout and won't be back. Here's why "meh" perfectly describes the experience: -Forego the udon. Odds our your corner deli does it better (IGK on 8th b/t 35th & 36th certainly does at 1/2 the price. -$2 extra to add tofu to the udon. Ok. But for 4 pieces of tofu?!? Come on. -I had the vegetable dragon roll and it was nice; really good as far as veggie sushi rolls go. Creative combo of ingredients and presented arranged in little hearts. -My husband had the sweetheart roll and gave it a "meh". -I drank the house hot sake while I waited and it was very nice ($5 for a small, also a nice price). Total price $43 which seems like a lot. At that price I kind of expected out of this world food which would have been a lovely surprise since nothing about the atmosphere or location suggests out of this world. Decent sushi if you're in the area and don't have the palate for: 99 cent pizza, bagels, or frozen yogurt. It's actually has a really nice interior atmosphere with a shack of an exterior. Waitress sometimes suffers bouts of ADD. Sushi was good, and surprisingly business was okay. read more

I had the okayo don (chicken, egg and mushrooms served over rice) and was expecting some kind of spicy sauce on top; it was very plain and so was my friend's curry dish -- hardly any spice whatsoever. While eating my food the thought legitimately crossed my mind that it would taste better as leftovers once I reheated and put some kind of sauce on it. When my husband and I got there the first greeting was a B from the heath dept. not good when raw fish is involved. I opted for a Bento Box, he the black beam salmon. The preceding salad had started to go bad, you know the signs, mucky bits of lettuce. Fine, power on. Shrimp bento, shrimp over done, baby carrots tossed in after everything else had been cooked and simply drizzled with teriyaki sauce. Broccoli obviously pre-blanched and refrigerated, still cold when it hit my box. The only good thing in the box was the gyoza. Husband salmon also over as well. What's happened? The server made a huge deal when I received my plate and was unhappy with the sweet soy sauce on top of my Shrimp Tempura rolls. She insisted that Shrimp Tempura rolls come with the sauce in EVERY sushi restaurant. I know this is untrue from my various sushi dining experiences. It took my insisting and 5 minutes for her to finally have the sushi bar remake my rolls. She was not happy and she made it very obvious. I pass by Mikado almost on a daily basis but never stepped foot inside because the place is always dark and I don't like dimly-lit restaurants. I finally gave in when one of my friends suggested the place for dinner. She's Japanese from Japan so I had no reason not to trust her. As soon as I saw the menu, I had a feeling I was right in trusting her. The prices were more than reasonable for this part of town. We both ordered the bento dinner boxes and the food seemed endless; the dinner combos came with a bit of everything and it all came in giant proportions. I've eaten here several times and each time, I went for the $18 dinner special. It includes an appetizer, a standard roll and a chef's special roll. I was baffled by some reviews suggesting that the sushi wasn't fresh. Having had severe cases of food poisoning twice, the last thing I want is to eat sushi that isn't fresh but I found my sushi to be quite fresh and delicious each time. The rolls are larger than the average size and there are many creative ones to choose from. Aside from the dinner special, there are pages and pages of other selections but again, I've always eaten from the dinner special so my review is based on that. There isn't a drop of atmosphere at this restaurant---the lights are bright and the interior resembles a coffee shop---only Japanese version. The service is also hit or miss. Bottom line---if you crave above average sushi and stick to the dinner special, you cannot go wrong. I walked out feeling full and spending little. Not a bad deal. read more

Confused and Dazed Hibachi I visited Mikado because all other restaurants I originally went to were crowded and had wait times. Food: It is uncommon I am uninterested in sushi at a Japanese restaurant, but since the reviews told me to reconsider it, I decided to go with the steak and shrimp hibachi instead. I wasn't impressed. The miso soup was your standard miso soup that you find at most Japanese restaurants. The salad itself was a joke. The lettuce was fresh, but the dressing had the consistency and flavor of water. I am uncertain if there wasn't enough, or the dressing they put on my salad wasn't properly mixed, but it lacked any distinct taste. The hibachi was a mixed bag of good and bad. The shrimp was well cooked, but over 50% of the steak was tough and had the texture of rubber. The sauce greatly compensated for the texture of the steak. It chased away the toughness and left behind a nice aftertaste of soy goodness. Surprisingly I must say the mushrooms were excellent. I normally avoid vegetables (fungi), but they did it right here. The rice was ok as well. Nothing much to say about it. The portion size is standard in comparison to lunch specials. Service: The service was all over the place on my Saturday afternoon visit. I was seated quickly and given a menu. The restaurant was a bit busier than one would expect at 300/315 in the afternoon, so I had to wait a few minutes longer than expected to order. I have to give them credit for keeping things in order despite the confusion. I was asked twice if I had ordered my drinks/food. I watched the other tables go through the same confusion in taking orders. However, the food came out correctly to each table and within a good time frame. Drinks: The hot sake burned so good! Overall: 2.5 Stars The positives and negatives of Mikado balance each other out While the shrimp, sauce and mushrooms of the hibachi was excellent, the steak was mostly tough and chewy. The salad and dressing lacked any flavor. Service seems a bit confused (maybe because of a lunch rush at 3pm) The lunch specials end at 4pm. Giving this place a 3.5! Came here for lunch and was greeted by staff. Immediate feeling of the restaurant was that it was quite warm and generally, I get cold easily so that's a good thing for me but it was almost a bit overwhelming. Staff was attentive yet the food took a while to come out. I ordered the lunch special which included 2 rolls, miso soup, and salad for $9. Really not bad in terms of pricing! And, I did enjoy the soup (not too salty) but the salad was okay. The salad dressing was yummy but there really wasn't much of it. It's always nice to get a balanced coating of dressing on the salad and really, I didn't see any carrots or anything of the like. It was just straight up lettuce. In terms of the rolls, I ordered the mushroom and avocado sushi which I really enjoyed. The mushroom flavor really stood out. I also ordered the salmon avocado roll. The salmon seemed fresh despite other reviews (though, totally worth it to give it a smell!). I thought both rolls were yummy but they were also generally smaller than rolls I've been served in the past. The reason why they are not getting any greater of a rating is because I found the place to be a bit dingy and not really on the clean side which is unfortunate particularly in a restaurant setting where our food is coming from! Specifically, the table top felt grimey, the sign on the table with the various sushi rolls was clearly dirty and needed to be wiped down, and my plate didn't look the cleanest either. They need to amp up their dishwashing soap and attention to detail, if you ask me! It's questionable whether I'd be back as there are other great sushi places in NYC. read more

The Japanese guy at the front desk was very helpful, and even let us order from the lunch menu, which was about to be over because it was almost 4:00 p.m. The food is authentic Japanese, I know because I've been to Japan. The nice, soft Japanese music reminded me of being in Tokyo. I really like their miso soup, and the way they put ice and water in your cups, and allow you to pour it and dilute the sugar. I come to this restaurant every few weeks. I live an avenue down so this is a quick option when I need something in the moment. Don't expect too much because it is a medium priced sushi restaurant. It's not high end and their food is just as good as any good fast sushi spot. I usually order the same thing and they have a lunch special before 4pm so I always make sure to to before 4 if I want a good deal on some rolls. I've ordered almost every roll on their menu once and they are all good. The food overall is good and they prepare quickly. If you don't want to sit down I've also had food delivered and between my order and the delivery it took 15 minutes at maximum or I've walked in and asked for a menu for takeout and they have chairs so you can sit and wait. Takes about 10 minutes or so for them to prepare if that, so it was very quick and the food is still good even if they rush a little bit. They have some curry options on the menu. Tried them once and never again. Not good quality on the rice and curries and my boyfriend went home with a a stomach ache.. but besides that it's a good place to go. The staff now know me because I go often and most of those working there are trilingual which is great because I didn't expect to speak Indonesian / Malay in a country so far away at a Japanese restaurant but I overheard the waiters talking in my native tongue so I started up a conversation which made it feel more like the east, so when I go now they're super nice to me and make sure I'm comfortable. read more

If you had asked me too write a review two months ago I would have raved about Mikado. The food while not necessarily the most authentic is delicious and fresh. There is a variety and the prices are awesome for someone on a budget. Alas that is where the good of this review ends. After going for lunch at Mikado over 10 times and ordering delivery twice over the last 7 or 8 months I must say that the quality of staff has gone down. I used to be able to get in and out full and happy in 40 minutes....Two visits ago our waitress neglected us for most of our visit and then gave us an attitude when we asked our leftovers to be boxed. This time however was the final straw... I went with a party of 3 during lunch. After taking our drink order our waitress couldn't explain to my friend what one of the dishes contained when questioned about it. We ordered our food and it came out in a timely matter. I was missing my fried rice which I was assured would come out quickly. After 10minutes of the waitress walking around and assisting other customers I had to flag her down for my rice. As we were finishing we wanted the check so we could get back to work. After failing to get her attention by raising my hand I resorted to waving my arms like an air traffic controller to get her attention. I was done. I left $2 on the table as tip and went to the desk to pay. As I was getting my change the waitress comes up to me, grabs the check and tells me that I didnt leave enough for a tip.....The check was $36, normally I would have tipped at least $6 but I didn't feel she deserved a thing. I gave her another dollar and told her she was rude and that I would not be back again. Now to find another reasonable Japanese place in the area read more
