I've driven by this eating establishment so many times and finally stopped for diner. Everything was amazing. The bread: amazing. The appetizer roasted sesame carrots: awesome. (I usually hate cooked carrots). Main. Course Ahi Tuna: amazing. (A total food memory and I will crave because the taste pops into my head at random times.) the flavor was simply outstanding. The tiny maple manicotti was small and I could have eaten a half gallon but I appreciate their sensible portion size. My friends meals we wonderful. I sampled as much as I could. So disappointing that only one staff person in this otherwise wonderful restaurant was wearing a mask on our first visit. On our second visit, amid Omicron taking hold, still only one staff person in this large restaurant was wearing a mask. Employees are not asked or encouraged by management to be vaccinated or to wear masks. It's as if we weren't in the middle of battling a pandemic. There appears to be no concern by the restaurant's management for the welfare and wellbeing of Mill Valley's employees, customers or community members. First time at Mill Valley Kitchens and we were very happy with our experience. We were two couples who just got together to chat and catch up. We ordered the smoked salmon appetizer to split between us all. There was a very large portion of salmon, so this worked well. Delicious appetizer. My husband and I split the beet salad, which the kitchen plated separately for us. It was delicious and very full of wonderful beets. I ordered the miso encrusted sea bass, one person ordered the trout and two ordered the pork chop. All of us raved about our food. My seabass was perfectly cooked, which is a real issue for me with fish and seafood - it is so often overcooked. This was just luscious. I had a bite of the pork and the trout and they were also very good. Nothing left on any plates, so this is not a place for splitting a meal. Enjoyed the fluffernutter for dessert, although it was a tad too sweet. Overall - the food was really lovely and fresh. Portions were good sized, but the prices are high. Our server was a little overzealous, but only one of us four found her annoying. The other three thought she was fun. Unfortunately for us, the table behind us had a gentleman who talked exceptionally loud and we found ourselves having to repeat things as we couldn't hear each other. When he left, the sound level dropped considerably and we enjoyed the rest of our meal. Our bill was fairly substantial, so I would say I knocked a little off the score for value. Mill Valley is great if you have dietary restrictions as they offer many vegan and/or gluten free options on their menu. The menu is mainly a la cart with smaller entree portions- great if you are watching that waistline, but not if you're a hearty eater (it could get expensive quick). Their veggie burger is excellent, one of the best I've ever had. I believe it is only available on the happy hour menu, which is when I like to visit Mill Valley anyway. Their desserts are the true delight. The fresh baked chocolate chip cookies served with a shot of milk (or milk alternative), are delicious. My other favorite is the maple panne cotta, if I didn't think I'd look like a bogart I'd probably order 3... they are mini after all. Ps. They have $5 valet parking. Coming from Boston (on average $18+) I feel like I am getting away with something and can brag to my friends back home. Plus, you're supporting a local! read more

What a great place! I met a friend here for happy hour last weekend. We ended up ordering wine and split a few appetizers, which included two flatbreads and the sesame carrots. I love how they list the fat, carbs, protein and fiber of each item on their menu. I wish all restaurants did this! On to the food... our food came out quickly and was absolutely divine! I have never been a fan of cooked carrots, but according to other reviews, I was told I must get them--and I'm glad I did! They were delicious. The two flatbreads we ordered were also excellent. The spinach had just the right amount of flavor to it, and the mozzarella flatbread was bursting with cheese. Overall, great food, great service. It felt like we had stepped into the kitchen of the neighborhood mom everyone loves and wishes was theirs. Everything was in order and clean. If you're from out of town, this is memorable and worth it. Perfect for parties with a wide variety of tastes. The vegan chili with its mild heat is satisfying. The Pho with raw jalapeños and cilantro garnish is a fresh, earthy balanced dish. My friend had the pork chop special. It was juicy and spot on. I have posted a picture of "after". We both had dessert. I had the Chia Parfait. The way our waitress described it-chia seeds in coconut milk pudding that had a tapioca pudding texture topped with toasted coconut on top of berries soaked in maple syrup may sound odd. But I could have eaten twelve of them. If you like coconut...creative and sublime is how I describe this. The Apple crisp was described as warm apple pie. It was beautiful and quickly devoured. Oh, how I love this place more each visit. The first visit was for its happy hour which was an incredible deal considering the quality of food. Fresh ingredients only here. I've been back for brunch and dinner. Each meal was delicious. Although some may not agree, I like knowing the nutrition info on the menu. You just feel better knowing what exatly you're eating. After a hearty kettlebell workout tonight, I met girlfriends for dinner here. I enjoyed a butter leaf salad and added some ahi tuna. The proportion was just right, not over the top huge. Just a drizzle of dressing which was a light cream based. The ahi tuna was done just right. It was perfect combo. Another friend had the seabass over a little couscous. Wish I had tried a bite as it also looked perfectly done and just the right amount of a side. The one thing we skipped on, dessert of chocolate chip cookies. I've had the cookies in the past and have loved their fresh hot out of the oven softness. The splurge was a fun refreshing cocktail of grapefruit juice, Kettle One and one other summer liquid I can't recall. The other times I've been here, I've tried the artichoke flatbread. They do it well and I won't pretend to tell you I know how. There's many a good flatbreads out there so I'll say it matches good ones I've eaten before. The brunch items I've tried is their omelette. Again, not overcooked eggs or stuffed beyond being an omlette. It's served with mixed greens. Space is well lit and still remains a cozy ambiance. Great service. I have to say of all the times I've driven past this place I haven't been very impressed with the outside appearance of the restaurant and where it sits on Excelsior. Finally, I found an excuse to try it out and all I had to do was take one step inside and it became an immediate "love affair". I dined here for happy hour. There is something about the atmosphere at Mill Valley that I can't quite explain but it's got a certain "vibe" to it that you'll like. It's "trendy" but not over the top. The bar area is inviting and separated slightly from the dining area. Personally, I prefer the "bar area" and if you choose to have dinner here while you're sipping a cocktail that's fine too. The happy hour goes from 3 - 6 pm (available in the bar area and patio). Wine by the glass, beer, rail cocktails and specialty drinks are all discounted $2. The burger (normally $10-13) goes for $3 and their whole grain flatbreads (normally 8-12) are $5 (discounted pricing apply as long as you order a cocktail). I was wholly unimpressed by pretty much everything here. The space brings to mind the dining hall in an assisted living center and was able to be both bright and depressing at the same time. The food was all over the board. The salads (mixed greens and butter lettuce) were good as was the flatbread, but the quinoa was incredibly bland and the burger was just this side of disgusting. The cappuccino had no foam and tasted like watered down Folgers. Desserts (maple panna cotta and chocolate chip cookie) were nothing spectacular, but good enough. Clearly the service was having an off night due to some computer glitch so I won't complain about that. Computers go down, I get it. It happens to me, too, and I'm sure what we experienced in terms of wait times is not the norm. Does anyone know who owns this place or is in the kitchen? The signs outside makes the place seem extremely casual, and it can be, but the interior is much nicer and feels like a little hidden gem. So far I have had the miso seabass twice. Loved it. Our server was awesome, very friendly and attentive. The other staff we encounters were also very pleasant. The whole restaurant is beautiful, I love the rolled towels in the bathroom in lieu of paper towels. On to the drinks, I had no idea they offered bottomless mimosas which is huge for me. My boyfriend got the bloody and it was surprisingly herbal and floral, but in a great way! We started with the shrimp and pesto flatbread which was surprisingly spicy, which I loved! I ordered the salmon burger and was not really blown away but it. It was difficult to eat as the bun to burger ratio was weird, so much bun, such a small patty. The salmon itself was pretty over cooked but I did enjoy it. I'm not quite ready to write it off, but I think I may need to be blown away next time. There will be another time. read more

Very impressed! Kate, my party's server, was top-notch. We were a table of 4 friends, one of them lives in the area and wanted to get us all together to try out the new restaurant in the neighborhood. Kate was impeccable; very knowledgeable about the menu, the property, drinks, owners, etc. We came off over-caffeinated, but she handled it with grace. The rest of the wait staff and food runners all worked like a well-oiled machine; our glasses never empty, empty plates were collected immediately, and smiles across the board. Love the interior of the place! The style is reminiscent of Villa Blanca in Beverly Hills, only this place is much larger and approachable. Clean, white lines, fresh flowers, candles. Anything with fruit, including drinks from the bar, are made freshly squeezed. Mill Valley has a clear mission to provide fresh, organic, in-season foods, and it shows in their dishes. Delicious! Mill Valley Kitchen is a great restaurant, and this is a serious review. There are no yucks, pranks or hijinks in this review. Here are the reasons why this restaurant is great and should be awarded all five star points on the Yelp: * The food is healthy. It's not "healthy," with quotation marks, but instead actually healthy. The flatbreads are made of whole grains, perfect for those trying to avoid white flour or who have gluten issues. The salads are made with tasty oil-based dressings with no artificial sweeteners. The proteins are lean. They even use brown rice with some dishes instead of white rice. * Even though the food lacks a lot of salt, saturated fats and carbohydrates, it still tastes good and is filling. I never knew that I would enjoy a very plain-looking salad (kale, pine nuts and oil dressing) so much. * The drinks are great. I went here with my wonderful girlfriend, and we enjoyed both very fine wines and a signature cocktail made with organic vodka, ginger and cranberry that we found to be pretty amazing. As someone who normally enjoys heavy beers that lead to an early demise (SEE MY REVIEW OF HAPPY GNOME), I found these drinks to be acceptable substitutes. * The meal is not horribly expensive. Between the two of us, we splurged and got not only two entree-sized meals, but the best wine in the house, a cocktail, and a salad, and we spent only about $80. We felt that the price was totally justified. * The menu is informative, but without being overbearing. Calories, fat, protein, etc. are all listed under each dish. Helpful for those on budgets or who, due to some other health-related reason such as diabetes, care to know these numbers. They are printed neatly underneath each dish and are not in-your-face or garish. Yes I am commenting on the design of the menu. I am allowed to do whatever I want on the Net. * The wait staff is very knowledgeable, fast and friendly. From the creative menu to the varied and excellent wine list to the beautiful and comfortable ambiance to the dessert list, this place is interesting and enjoyable from top to bottom. Tonight I had a flatbread pizza paired with a really nice Pinot, while others at our table had bison burger, sea bass, and pasta. I had the vegetarian chili as an appetizer and we shared warm chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Everything at the table was fantastic. As if that weren't enough, everything is reasonably priced ($10-15/plate). I also love that they cater to the health-conscious, cooking with a lot of organic food and listing nutrition info next to every dish. You can get dressy if you like, but plenty of people were in jeans. The environment allows for either. You have to see the decor--it really does feel like you're in someone's dining room. Super comfortable. As for the make-or-break question: GREAT service from beginning to end. Top of the line. Mill Valley will become a regular date night spot for us. UPDATE: My wife and I were just talking about it again and we can't think of a single thing to criticize (which is a real rarity for us picky types). We finally got around to trying MVK for lunch, and it rocks. I've been trying to eat healthier lately, and I appreciate the nutrition information on the menu. Even so, I was not deterred from trying the turkey Reuben (technically a Rachel) and I was most pleased. A generous serving of sliced turkey on crispy toast, with swiss cheese and just the right amount kraut and dressing. Nice! My dining companion had the watermelon salad and a side of mushroom barley "risotto," and both were excellent. We also enjoyed our "mocktails," which were refreshing and reasonably priced. The warm fireplace, simple elegant decor, and friendly staff put us at ease from the start. We ordered drinks at the bar before being seated for dinner. Loved the cocktails and helpful bartender. Once we were seated at our table, our waiter Austen, was knowledgeable and super friendly. All four of us enjoyed our appetizer, meal and dessert. Fresh, delicious and filling. well, who would have thought that a gleaming, spacious, airy, wine country inspired restaurant would replace dark, smoky Als?! Stopped in for lunch last week and was so overwhelmed with the space. I lived in San Francisco and can say with certainty that Mill Valley Kitchen truly has captured the essence of Mill Valley, CA and the surrounding wine country. The open air feel, white-washed walls, fireplace and comfortable booths are inviting and warm. Our server was excellent and extremely helpful. We also chatted with the front manager, Brandon, who was exceptionally insightful as to the ownership/management/vision behind MVK. He even got us a reservation to return that evening, despite the full capacity of the restaurant. My mom and I shared one of the sandwiches (fig spread, chicken and brie -- delish), as well as a side of kale (spicy and garlicy) and a flatbread (perfection -- onions, eggplant, cheese...so delicious). When we returned that evening (yes..i know...same place in the same day...) the restaurant was buzzing! Being there in the evening was a different experience. Everyone in the restaurant seemedt o know each other and the vibe almost teetered on being at a bar rather than a restaurant. The service was just as good; however, I must mention that the lunch food hit the mark way better than our dinner experience. I had some bites of the salmon which was good not great and outshined by the caponata type sauce it was served on top of. I got the sea bass and it was very lack luster. I think that MVK needs to stay on top of the seasoning for dinner entrees because with just a bit of S and P, both dishes really perked up. The desserts were fabulous, though! the warm cookies with a shot of milk were outstanding, as were the 'shooters' of key lime pie and triple chocolate. A great birthday treat! The cocktail menu and bar area are also fabulous --- I'm just holding my breath until they carry Fulton Beer! I'm glad that this spot opened -- it's about time that Minneapolis/SLP had a good, accessible farm to table, sustainable restaurant that provides an upscale dining experience with MN friendliness. We love to try new places, and this is on the newer side - also, I read it was vegan-friendly (I'm vegetarian). So the menu is pretty cool, with the nutrition facts printed (calories/fat/carbs/protein) beneath each item. There are salads, soup, flatbreads, burgers and entrees as well as an assortment of sides/snacks. They have a full bar as well as mixed juices, including a kombucha drink. They have a small parking lot with valet available which might be more necessary on busy evenings since much of the surrounding neighborhood is permit only parking. We found parking on the street at 5pm on a Sunday evening. The atmosphere was casual/clinical - my husband said it was like dining in a department store. (Kinda like Macy's, before Macy's became a dump) - there are tables and booths, some outdoor seating on Excelsior blvd... it was comfortable, but not overly cozy. Decor includes faux grass plants and shiny canisters - not really sure what they're trying to accomplish there, but it all looks very clean. You could probably get a pap smear there and feel right at home. We ordered the Mixed Green Salad ($6.50), House Made Hummus and Pita ($5) and two flatbreads - Mozzarella Tomato & Basil ($7) and the Italian Chicken Sausage with Green Pepper Mushroom & Onion ($9) The salad was not overdressed, but the dressing had to high a ratio of vinegar to anything else. We mentioned that to the waitress and she said she would communicate it to the kitchen - she seemed genuinely interested in whether or not it was overdressed or if the dressing itself was improperly prepared - that was nice. It was an unfortunate salad, however. The hummus was nice, with a slightly coarse preparation - very house made, with a garnish of olive tapanade. The pita had a lovely texture as well, but was over-salted, and that was really too bad. My flatbread (the vegetarian one) was also oversalted. Ugh! I only ate half and didn't bother to take the rest home. My husband agreed (and you can trust him, he's a local fine dining chef) and postulated that it was probably the tomato slices that had been oversalted and that the preparation was probably done by sprinkling the salt by hand, and that the person doing it probably had wet hands and therefore the salt clumped and fell onto the food in a greater amount.... well. he's the expert. It sucked. His flatbread (the chicken sausage one) was "average" - so it didn't suck, that's nice. Service was attentive and polite, even warm - no points off for service. We also ordered some of their "natural refreshments" - I had the red moon ($4), he had the ellipse elixer ($5). Mine made my tummy hurt, his was refreshing - just like the menu header said. This meal could have been SO MUCH BETTER if the kitchen staff were trained on proper seasoning. You can hardly do more to ruin a meal than over salt something - if you under salt, the diner in most cases can choose to add salt... nothing to be done to take it away. If you're serving entrees up to $48.00/plate, you need to have kitchen staff that can salt properly. No really, you NEED that. PS - the bottle of water at your table will inform you that the water was made on site, which I get (it's probably filtered on site, whop de doo) but we had a funny moment imagining someone in the back mixing hydrogen and oxygen all the same. :-) PPS - their satellite muzak station is turned to something that mixes smooth jazz, your favorite Cities 97 tracks and an occasional Muppets number all in 10 minutes. On our list of places to try this summer, we finally made it to MVK last night for dinner. Walking in, I was very impressed by the décor; it's a beautiful restaurant! We were seated about 10 minutes after our reservation (the place was packed), which allowed us to check out the bar area & the open kitchen. Our waitress came over shortly after we were seated to bring us water & explain the menu. We both ordered Bell's Oberon on tap while looking over the menu. I ordered the grass-fed beef burger that comes with a side salad & Ryan ordered the bison burger but subbed out the salad for the mushroom risotto. A few minutes later our waitress came back with a plate of ketchup & brown mustard. Ryan asked if he could get mayo since he doesn't eat either, but no dice; they do not have mayo. We should have figured, being that it is a health-conscious restaurant. Oh well. The burgers were smaller than I was expecting, but in the end they were the perfect size. I clearly need to watch "Super Size Me" again to bring me back to reality regarding portion control! I really liked my burger. It was cooked perfectly & all the toppings were very fresh. The salad was very bland; I don't think there was any dressing on it. Maybe that was intentional? I don't know. Ryan enjoyed his burger & loved the risotto. For dessert, we ordered two key lime pie miniature desserts. So delicious! They come in a tall shot glass and are 4-5 bites. It was the perfect amount. I thought the prices ($10 for a burger) were really reasonable. The only annoying part of the night was when we got the bill. While our server was explaining the menu, she said that any of the snacks/sides could be substituted for the salad that comes with the burger. So, we figured that they'd either portion them out appropriately to be free, or charge $2 (something minimal). Instead, we were charged the full $5. I thought that was a little odd. In reality he should have just ordered the risotto separately rather than "substituting" it in and not getting the salad at all. In the end, it's $5. Small complaint. Not a big deal. I REALLY like the concept they they've got going on here. Fresh, local ingredients shine here. If you're gluten free, vegetarian, or have any other dietary restrictions, this is your place, as everything is clearly marked on the menu! Onto the food and its deliciousness. Their wholegrain flatbreads are quite tasty, and are great for a starter among a few girlfriends with one of their local beers on tap. The pork tenderloin, served with lentils & squash puree was a HUGE portion, and easily split between two-- not to mention an out-of-this-world combination of unique textures and flavors. They offer a ton of snacks and sides too, which can make dinner here more affordable if you want to split an entree, and add on an additional side or two. For dessert, we ordered two plates of the warm chocolate chip cookies for the table, which were served with a tiny glass of milk. Adorable and delicious, and I wanted another order (yet resisted myself). I've had excellent meals here, but service has been a little bit awkward and strange. I have encountered this from a few waiters, but I'll let that slide for now-- hopefully they don't linger again when we're talking about setting up our brothers on a dating website, or tell my girlfriend that her hairstyle was spotted on her favorite blog that day. A few additional pointers: --Parking can be a bit of a pain here if their lot is all filled up, so you can either 1) park far away or 2) use their valet! --I've heard rave reviews on their happy hour, do yourself a favor and go! Had lunch with almost our entire family so there were 8 of us. Called late this morning and they easily accommodated us. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food. there are two dairy free eaters and one vegetarian and the three of us especially enjoyed our choices. One of our favorite places; we have never had a bad meal there. read more

My wife, 20 month old daughter and I went last night (opening night). The food was great, I had the sea bass which was amazingly delicious. They have decent beers on tap (although no Surly or Harriet brews) and a full bar. The service was superb. My daughter was a terror, but the staff took it in stride and was very accommodating to us. I'm looking forward to giving their breakfast and lunch a try. P.S. - Even though I really like this place, I still miss Al's! read more

love this place! have tried almost everything on the menu now BEST: sea bass hummus platter - that pits is AMAZING lamb all the small sides (sesame carrots, kale etc.) I also love how small the desserts are, perfect for a just a taste! read more

While I am no cheapskate, even the finest meal in town must deliver that delicate balance of excellent taste, portion size, service, ambiance & value. MVK misses the mark.
