I've driven by this restaurant too many times to count and finally stopped in for an impromptu Sunday evening dinner and was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was upscale, but approachable and comfortable. We were seated promptly. The restaurant was busy enough to give you confidence it was good but we didn't have to wait which is always a plus (particularly with kids). Once seated, I was delighted to learn that kids eat free on Sunday. Unfortunately, the health conscious tone of the adult menu didn't extend to the kids menu which featured mac and cheese, a cheeseburger, cheese pizza and chicken, although it was served with edamame instead of fries. Back to the adult menu, I had the warm mushroom salad which was delicious. The greens offered a variety of textures and the mushrooms and squash were nicely roasted. The salad had the perfect amount of dressing and left me satisfied. My husband had the cioppino which was fantastic! The seafood was fresh and the broth was so delicious I wanted to drink whatever was left after the seafood was gone! Our server was attentive, friendly and helpful. While we did have three drinks between the two of us, I was surprised that we racked up an $80 bill as quickly as we did. My friend and I went last night to celebrate our retirement from work, 42 years with the same company!!! We had a blast and mostly because of our amazing waiter, Austin. He was very professional, checked on us frequently and yet hilarious, we even got him to dance for us! We ate outside, it was a perfect night for that. This was my first experience at Mill Valley Kitchen and I have to say I was thoroughly impressed! I went with a friend for dinner and we immediately were shocked with how bright, clean and open it felt. Also, the option to valet is a big plus for me since the parking lot itself is small and I'm not super familiar with the side streets. Food: Really good, though the portions are small, especially for the price. My friend got some chicken & risotto dish and the chicken itself was teeny. I got something like a lamb hotdish and it was superb. I could have had the whole thing, but I wanted to save some for lunch the next day. We also got a flatbread as an appetizer - it was ok and needed better seasoning. The desserts, however, were amazing. Both the brownies and the cookies were SO GOOD. Service: really great! From beginning to end, you're definitely spoiled. The valet was great, super friendly, and joked around with us. Our server was attentive without being overly pushy. We did get a chance to speak with the manager, and he was also great. All around a solid staff. Atmosphere: The ambiance here is pretty apparent - it's upscale. This isn't my normal type of hangout, so for me it was different but I still loved it. I can see going here with friends for a special treat, or with my mom or MIL. Value: Ok so this is a new spot for me, because normally my approach is, "If I don't have to cook/meal plan, it's worth it". I really liked the food - a LOT. When you consider the care that goes into it, I would say that overall, it's worth it. YES, it's expensive! All I'm wondering now is why it took me so long to eat here... Plenty of my friends had been recommending this place recently, especially when I started eating more on the paleo end of the spectrum. My friend absolutely raves about their miso-glazed sea bass dish that comes with ginger-shitake quinoa and fellow paleo pal Rachael A had me at kombucha mocktail. If you have any dietary restrictions or allergies or just want to eat delicious food, I can't recommend this place enough. The menu is so detailed without being obnoxious. Gluten-free and vegetarian items are clearly marked (which I lurve), and they list the caloric/fat info too (which I ignore). I ordered the grilled salmon with pickled beets and a parsnip puree ($21). They subbed in a side of brussels sprouts for the non-paleo side that was on the menu with it at the time---easiest exchange ever. The server just said, "Yep, what were you thinking? We can do any side on the list." Aside from slightly underdone Brussels sprouts, the dish was incredible. The lightly seasoned salmon was cooked perfectly to a medium well, and the parsnip puree had me wondering why I've never tried making that at home before. It was so creamy and rich, and not as sweet as one would think. I must find out their secrets. I also had a bite of Rachael A's sesame seed-dusted tuna poke, which was not foolin' around. The menu is partially seasonal but doesn't change too much from lunch to dinner (offerings nor prices), but they do have a little weekend breakfast menu available too. I was impressed by the whole cocktail menu (and would normally order wine with salmon), but of course I had to try the kombucha mocktail, which is called Rx. It's a mix of kombucha (they have Deane's kombucha ON TAP) with orange, coconut water and pineapple juice. It's not too sweet, and has just the right bit of effervescence. They offer all kinds of non-alcoholic options, fresh sodas, smoothies and protein shakes too. It's a bit pricier than my usual nights out, but the quality is way up there, service was great, the menu is inventive and the atmosphere is also rather lovely. With the space on the first-level of an SLP condo building, I was expecting it to feel more suburban, but it really doesn't. It just feels NICE. Tips: -They offer valet. Don't know the cost because I ended up finding a spot in the parking lot that was just as close as the valet stand was to the door. The valet staff was very friendly though, and even held the door open for me like gentleman. -1/2 price wine bottles on Mondays -Kids eat free for dinner on Sundays. -This made me laugh, but they have to card you for the kombucha since it has a teensy bit of alcohol in it. read more

Last Tuesday we had a family dinner at Mill Valley Kitchen - there were 16 of us total. I called a couple weeks ahead of time to make a reservation, and was told for a group that large we may want to reserve the private dining room. In order to reserve the room on a Tuesday night, we had to agree to spend a certain amount. If we didn't hit the amount, we would pay that amount, but get the amount we didn't spend on food/drink back on a gift card to use at our next visit. When we arrived at 6:30pm on Tuesday, the room was set up perfectly. I had pre-asked for separate checks, and our server was on top of it. Being a lively, talkative family, people in the group were moving around all night. I don't know how our server did it, but she still managed to get all of the bills right at the end of the night, and everyone's food and drinks easily found them. The food and beverages were all high quality. Several people ordered the sea bass, and they were all raving and saying it was the best they had ever had. I had the salmon, and would order it again. Most everyone enjoyed their meals, but my dad did say his pork was a little dry and overcooked. Everyone liked that the calories and nutritional information were available on the menu and that local, fresh ingredients were used. Overall, a great experience (especially with such a large group)! I had the totally wrong idea about Mill Valley Kitchen. Having driven by it and seen it's on the first floor of a mixed-use (residential and retail) building I assumed it would be a casual place. Maybe like a sit-down version of Yum or D'Amico. I made reservations for a weekend night. We walked in and wow, the space is beautiful. Great lighting, white woodwork, beautiful decor. Immediately I knew this was a higher-end place than I'd envisioned. The host staff seemed a little overwhelmed by the number of people converging on them at once, but they said they were opening up a new section and we were seated in a small room in the back (with a wall of wine bottles) that we later learned is sometimes used for private parties. Our server helped us make our choices (we are nothing if not indecisive) and we settled on sharing the English Bacon, Pineapple, Pickled Chili and Cilantro Flatbread for our starter, then splitting the Whipped Coconut Sweet Potatoes and Curry Grain Bowl as our dinner. Wow. We were seriously impressed. The crust of the flatbread had a great texture, and the ingredients mingled perfectly (oh, the pickled chili!). The whipped coconut sweet potatoes... oh em gee, you have to get these. Today. This dish will make your mouth very, very happy. Soft, sweet, marvelous texture. I looked up recipes later but doubt I'll be able to match these. Then the curry grain bowl. For something that seemed so simple on paper it was good. The Brussels sprouts, the cauliflower, the grains... amazing. We both said we'd definitely be back. We were surprised, in a good way, by how great everything was, maybe because we hadn't heard much about the restaurant beforehand. So here's your hype - go try Mill Valley Kitchen. Swanky for MN, loved it! The restaurant itself is airy, light, and modern with an almost spa like feel to compliment the menu. Complimentary valet parking for lunch. Table and booth seating and outside tables available. Daily specials include soup, appetizers, and mains. We got the California all-beef hot dog special topped with guac and pico de gallo served with salad. The hot dog was good but the bun was a little dry. Cauliflower soup topped with a little olive tapenade special was tasty. Waitress recommended salmon burger but hubby thought overcooked. My Chilean sea bass was near perfect: well glazed with miso, served on top of quinoa, and topped with sweet and sour julienned cucumber and carrots (which I didn't quite like.) Brother got ?bison burger which they were able to top with an assortment of grilled mushrooms and onions-yum! Skirt steak is served sliced on top of kale and with potatoes. Day Spa juice was excellent combination of cucumber, ginger, agave, and lemon. Refreshing, light, and paired well with my meal. Creme brûlée was good but cold in some spots and hot in others? I have been back here numerous times since my last review. and things just keep getting better. The current menu has delicious options for meat and fish eaters as well as vegetarians. They had a fish soup one time, cioppino-like and yummy. The other day my husband had the noodles and pork Asian style soup that he declared good - it was studded with vegetables. I came here a while back for my friend Ryan's bday dinner. Him and his wife are big on gluten free and organic eating. I had passed by this restaurant for some time now and never really had a motivation to go in till the bday invite. So anyway, by complete surprise I fell in love with the design and the friendly staff. They have huge tables. Maybe it worked well with Minnesotans but I'm a petite asian girl. I had to sit at the edge of my seat to reach the table. Anyway, thats just my own personal issue. I ordered the salmon dish and the risotto. the risotta was to die for! OMG...I would come back just for that. The plates were small portions so i was still hungry. Then again you have to think, this place is meant for food conscious people. I wasn't sure that I was going to like this restaurant because I'm always a bit leery about the mixed use development anchor restaurant. But I was pleasantly surprised. The service was great - they really know the menu which is a plus. The servers taste the menu items so they can accurately describe. The tune poke, pork tenderloin, mushroom salad were great. I am not a fan of seabass in general but here it was well prepared. They have a great happy hour with $5 burgers and good drink specials (dining room excluded). My only beef is that the wine was marked up 3x (that's what happens when you do popular labels...vinophiles know what prices are at retail). The prices were only about 2x at the higher price points though so this is a good place to splurge on a bottle if you are in the mood. I'd describe the food as wholesome...they use lots of legumes, kale, mushrooms as sides, lots of fresh choices. They also list out the nutritional content on the menu (thanks!) Drive past the valet if you prefer free parking, which is limited but is available. Final tip - you can take two approaches on desserts - a reasonable taste for a low price or a gargantuan portion at a higher price. Mill valley kitchen is a great choice for anyone who is health conscious or wanting to eat a little lighter. Everything on the menu includes nutritional facts, and there are many light and healthy options to choose from. We sat outside on a beautiful day and really enjoyed their patio. My husband had a salad with grilled chicken added, and I had a flat bread pizza. The salad was very fresh and a generous portion. The flatbread was ok but oddly bland. TIP: they also have many different draft beers and will gladly give you a sample if you can't decide which to order! OMG. I goto MSP once a month on business and always try to find something unique and amazing. Typically that means top rated restaraunts on yelp, if aint 4 or 5 stars it aint worth it. This place lives up to its rating. The service, food and ambiance are just amazing. Few things to note" - Be careful with the salads, they are amazing to say the least. I understand the buzz, but I'm not yet sold on Mill Valley Kitchen. Sure, it's a cool vibe, but almost too cool - to the point of feeling a bit sterile. It felt stiff to me. Stuffy. It's a relatively older crowd (I understand this is a relative term...) - most of the people seemed to be 40's-60's. You wouldn't know it from my reviews here on Yelp, but I try to eat healthy 80-90% of the time. So I'm all about a menu that tastefully displays calories, fats, carbs, and protein. And there are more than enough gluten-free options at MVK to feed an entire tribe of Paleo-eating cave people. But here's the thing: my dad (Old Man River) and I sat down for dinner here on a Thursday night, and we walked away with a $55 bill. So $66 after tip. Mind you, this is sans adult beverages. We split an order of edamame ($5), each ordered a burger (served w/ a side salad), and each ordered a side. I had a latte for dessert ($3.50), and Old Man River ordered some fruit ($7). It's like they take every chance they can get to gouge you, and that rubs me the wrong way. The burgers were entirely unimpressive, and tiny. I had the beef and OMR had the bison. Neither one of us was pleased. They were 1/3 pound burgers, at the most. And not much flavor to speak of. The coconut sweet potato was good, but it wasn't quite large enough to share as a single side for 2 people. My dad had the spicy green beans, and those were great...but for $6, they better BLOW ME AWAY. Let's be honest, the global economy still kinda sucks. Started this time with Baby Kale salad....light and tasty. On previous visits I've had the Miso Seabass for an entree and it's been exquisite. How has it taken me this long to try Mill Valley Kitchen? It's places like this that make me miss Minneapolis. I got brunch at MVK last Sunday with my two main partners in crime, and all three of us had an amazing time. It was a perfectly sunny day, so we grabbed a spot on their patio. We all ended up sampling each others dishes, so I was able to try the following: - Daily Greens Juice: light and refreshing. I picked up the celery flavor strongest, so if that isn't for you, steer clear. I thought it was great. - Super Green Smoothie: much earthier than I anticipated. Decent, just not a traditional smoothie by any means. - Shakshuka: couscous dish with a nice bite to it. - Breakfast Burrito with Chicken Sausage: awesome dish and easy to share since they slice it into two pieces. - Quinoa Waffle: this was my dish, and I fell in love. I had never had a quinoa waffle, but actually might prefer it over buttermilk. This was our first time at MVK. The food was a mixed experience . The Bananas Foster French toast was divine. The side of chicken sausage was over cooked and flavorless as was the salmon patty in the Salmon Benedict. The poached eggs were perfect but the kale was crunchy and the Old Bay Hollandaise sauce bland. The lemon served with my tea was surprisingly nearly flavorless which may account for the bland sauce. I went to the restaurant on Saturday night. We sat on their patio. Mill Valley has been one of our favorites so we were glad to be back. The food was really good, and as usual the service was top notch. What bugged me was that they instituted an 18% service charge on all tabs. There were signs that this money does not go to the servers. It is not a gratituty. It is a hidden price increase. So, my total food and wine cost got increase by 36% before I was all done. Checked out this place Tuesday after work. It is a super cute atmosphere and our server was great! We split a few dishes. The spicy edamame was so good. The sauce was very flavorful. Our main dishes were the ham & blue cheese flat bread and the salmon. The salmon was just okay in my opinion. Not good or bad, but that ham flatbread. My WORD it was delicious. Would definitely recommend that. A great little dessert trio to end the meal was also so good! Love love love that the menus have the nutritional facts (fat, carb and protein) on the menu. Execent meal. I keep coming back here because the food is great and at the right price point. Tonight I had the scallops, and they were excellent- look at my picture (10/10). Would recommend to anyone. The ambiance is crisp, hip, cool, & clean. This is a awesome place for a casual dinner during the week, as well as an excellent place for a nice date on the weekend. Yum Yum in my TUMTUM. I really enjoyed this place. I started with a warm mushroom salad, moved my way through to the pork tenderloins and finished with a mini dessert. They do a great job here with local and organic sourcing and have really detailed nutritional facts about all their food on the menu. Great place for a light bite or a full dinner. My wife had a a flat bread. Only downer is that contrary to what some may think, this wasn't a great spot for vegetarians. They do have options, but nothing out of the ordinary. Final word: If your looking for a wow desert, look elsewhere. They do an amazing job with their main courses and salads though! I will be returning. read more

Had a great time here! We got there just before the end of happy hour and our server was quick to get us our drink order so we could capitalize on that! We even put in a quick order for a second round of drinks too, which was genius. Menu had a lot of great options on it, but I opted to go for the special of the day which was fish taco's. I made the right call, they were fantastic! I also made sure to try all the food on the table whether it was mine or not, I was happy with all the orders. Oh and I almost forgot, we got a flat bread for an appetizer and it was perfectly cooked and delicious. Our server was on top of her game as she was very attentive, knew her stuff and gave great recommendations. The restaurant is dimly lit so you can have a nice date night or a family dinner, then menu can be hard to read however. It's never too loud in there so conversation is easy. Country-club like setting of painted white wood in a low ceiling spacious restaurant located in the first floor of one of those newer suburban condo projects on the edge of uptown. The menu has a wide variety of items each posted with their calorie count to help you avoid overindulging. The restaurant features an open kitchen. We were seated in the middle of the space and the room seemed to alternate between comfortable and way too hot on about a 10-minute cycle. Perhaps they were trying to keep it warm for all the senior citizens that were dining there that night. We visited on new year's eve and were celebrating a birthday. The server was very friendly and efficient. The food was fine, but just 3 stars. None of the 4 of us really raved about any of the dishes we had. While they have a parking lot, space is limited but they have a valet to help with that. read more

This popular spot appears to be one of those places one goes to sip a glass of wine, demonstrate self-control via pretentiously healthful cuisine, and be *seen* by others who value sipping wine and working on their anorexia. The ambiance is chic, the regulars impeccably trendy and Californian-ideal slim. Not surprising, given the health-spa portions. (See photo.) After approximately a half dozen meals at Mill Valley I am certain of one thing - the food and service are typically well above average. Our strategy here is to load up on appetizers, usually our trinity is hummus plate, spicy edamame and the Brussels spout salad- with wine ( happy hour till 6pm, $5 glass) This past trip I had the fish tacos which are very well done, but perhaps a bit pricey. The rest of our party had pork chops and the young hen. One of the pork chop orders was slightly over cooked, but not to the point of needing to send it back or making a fuss. Sesame carrots are also a standard part of our meal, and as odd as it may sound maybe the one thing I look forward to most when eating at this restaurant. read more

Sometimes, one just needs a relaxing time away from the stress of the world and that is JUST what MVK offers. The details and designs of the restaurant are nice and inviting, the staff helpful and cordial and the food delicious. There is an emphasis on healthy foods presented in appetizing ways. I had the kale salad, and let me tell you, it was wonderful! The cheese on top, I want to say manchego, was beautifully paired with pine nuts and a chili lime vinaigrette that all came together with the help of baby kale. This is a salad that I will definitely return for. For my entree I had the salmon. It sat atop a celeriac purée, which was good, and a bed of braised radicchio and prosciutto. I personally felt the prosciutto was hidden in the strong flavor of the radicchio and if you weren't paying attention, you couldn't have known it was in there. It was my only complaint. To end things off on a nice note, I went for the mini maple panna cotta. It was out of this world! Creamy and sweet with a hint of saltiness from the smoked sea salt on top. Four-and-a-half stars really. The only problem with this place is that it's very expensive and probably a bit overpriced. Other than that, Mill Valley Kitchen rocks. Healthy upscale food, with calories and nutritional information printed on the menu, is a revelation. It's so nice to have a great meal and not feel like a whale afterwards. I concur with other reviewers: the miso sea bass entrée is heavenly. This has been on the ever-changing menu forever for good reason. On our last trip, we also tried the curry grain bowl, which didn't sound all that good, but it was amazing -- it was full of apples, sweet potatoes, Brussel sprouts, and a beautifully tangy curry sauce. (However, the three overcooked shrimp we ordered with the curry was not worth the $11.) I wasn't crazy about the trout I ordered -- it was very fresh and high quality, but the dish overall was bland. We did like the tabbouleh salad, which is served in a tomato and is great for sharing. On a past visit we ordered a couple of flavorful flatbreads; these would make great entrées. Desserts are good too, and I appreciate the teensy $4 dessert cups, which are a very satisfying way to end a healthy meal without wrecking it. Oh, and the décor is lovely. I totally recommend the outdoor patio, which was very pleasant on a September evening thanks to the heat lamps. Just wanted to try something new. Paid $22 for Cobb salad . $18 is the price for this nothing special normal Cobb salad. This comes with Turkey and if you want to switch turkey with chicken you pay extra. Restaurant is Expensive and NOTHING special. I have had way better Cobb salad in $10 cheaper than this. As I embarked on the impossible quest to eat healthier, Mill Valley Kitchen grabbed my hand and held it through a guilt-free dinner (one of very few, ever). So there's a big parking lot, but only kind of. It's shared with several other businesses and an apartment complex, so you might play the cirlce-until-someone-leaves game. Still, two of us were still able to find spots on a Friday @ 6:30pm. The entrance is beautiful and the interior is classy, with floral arrangements and large art pieces. But the sun was shining and the mosquitos haven't ruined our lives yet, so we went straight to the patio! The menu features fresh, colorful, seasonal items, as well as "California-inspired" faves. Each item has a nutritional breakdown (calories, carbs, fat, protein, fiber) which is super appreciated. Food ordered: gazpacho with crab creme fraiche, scallops, lemony kale, and I tried a bite of gnocchi that came with the steak entree. The gazpacho sounded like perfection, I was craving it before the server even finished describing it. However, it was sadly void of flavor. It was a small cup but I couldn't force it down. Hopefully they add some salt, herbs, and a little kick! The scallops were fantastic, though! Large, sweet, with a savory sear. I loved the pea mash that came with it too. It came with a shitload of carrots, which were colorful and well-dressed. The lemony kale was served warm and carried the trifecta of flavors: cheese/parm, lemon, and garlic. Lastly, the gnocchi I tried was so plump and pillowy, I could eat 5 bowls right now. Service was satisfactory. Sometimes a little on the slow side, but luckily I choose cool people to have dinner with. I will be back for sure for some fresh food after a day on Calhoun! read more

We went there this evening for dinner and sat in the bar area. Mario was working that area and gave us wonderful recommendations on food. We had the mango spring rolls, sea bass and salmon entrees that were all wonderful. Mario was so on top of what was happening in the area. As soon as my fork hit the floor, he was over with another clean one for us. Excellent service by him and a wonderful experience as well as the good and drinks. read more
