After a girl's day out, we decided to have lunch. Where do we go when one of us is vegan and can't have animal products? We go to Mini Garden, where they have a wide variety of dishes to choose from! Such delicious choices, too, not just the typical Chinese dishes, but a decent selection of vegan choices. I had the wor wonton mein, and it was a huge serving of deliciousness in a hot, steaming bowl. Exactly what I needed on this cold day! I loved the condiments provided: chili oil, chili sauce, hot yellow mustard and shoyu. I used them all! We all enjoyed different dishes and the service was very pleasant. We drank several pots of tea and did not feel rushed. Afterwards, each of us received a custard with mango pudding. Light, not too sweet, and the perfect ending to a lovely meal. read more

Oops, I failed to take photos of proof, but believe me when I say that the food was yummy and would happily recommend this place. Here's what we had and would order again (list is in order of my favorite dishes): - salt and pepper pork chop: crispy and tasty, not too fatty, yummy garlic bits made it extra tasty - pork hash with salted duck egg: always a favorite! so tasty with rice! - kau yuk with taro: love this dish, so I was happy that they were able to make it (I am so disappointed when restaurants have it on the menu but are out of the taro!) - green beans with pork: garlicy and a little spicy, one of the few dishes we completely finished - minute chicken cake noodles: good to share with a large family, as I don't think I could eat a whole (or half) order of this myself! As my toddler said, these are yummy! But after a square of crispy noodles, she was onto other courses. That's ok, that's why I love eating 8 course chinese dinners! :) We had it with gravy on the side, which is how I always like to order my cake noodles, to ensure that the noodles stay crispy. My biggest criticism of the meal is that the gravy was gloopy - too much cornstarch! - but at least I could control how much gravy I added. - fish with shoyu, green onions, ginger: nothing out of the ordinary, but the kids like it - volcano beef: comes in foil and has the outside bedding of cabbage and salt in flames for awhile to keep cooking the foil packet of beef. Fun presentation! - garlic fried rice with lup cheong: ok, not that tasty, but I didn't eat the lup cheong so I can't give a fair assessment They also gave our table complimentary almond pudding with mango sauce, which we all enjoyed. They even gave my dad a candle when we said it was his birthday, so the kids enjoyed singing to him. I'm also happy that they honor the restaurant.com vouchers, as I know other restaurants have said that they didn't agree to the terms of the program and didn't accept them. It was a great way to score $15 off the bill, and it was already a reasonably priced meal. Finally, it's nice that there's a free lot of parking nearby - unfortunately, on this night, it was full, so we had to find street parking nearby. read more

I've been meaning to try Mini Garden for some years but never got around to it until this past week. And I kind of wish I didn't. I think we got there about 12:00 on a Friday and was surprised to see the restaurant empty except for one other diner who left shortly after we arrived. My wife usually orders a lunch plate from Chinese restaurants but it wasn't offered here. Instead there are a handful of main dishes to choose from to make a single choice lunch plate and the server offered to make a lunch plate for my wife with 2 choices, orange chicken and beef broccoli which my wife took her up on. I ordered the sizzling platter beef tenderloin with a bowl of rice. My wife's lunch was so bland that she usually takes her leftovers home but declined this time. She did not want to eat it again. At first taste my beef tenderloin tasted OK the it occurred to me that they did't use beef tenderloin in this dish. The meat was tender but it was also very fatty and gristly. Tenderloin is not very fatty and doesn't have gristle. The fat was hard to see because the sauce darkened everything but I kept biting into fat. The service was very friendly and attentive, which is sometimes very rare in a Chinese eatery, but that didn't compensate for the fact that the food wasn't very good. The highlight of the meal was the unexpected complimentary almond gelatin. This was really delicious and refreshing but it is not that good that it would urge me to return. read more

We've been coming here for years and are never disappointed. I love Chinese and eat meat, my other half is vegetarian.... Enter Mini Garden: their basic Chinese items, think char Sui, Peking duck, beef broccoli, cake noodle is delicious, and definitely better than a lot of the Chinese here in the island, AND THEN there's their vegetarian menu, OMG miso butterfish with pepper, honey chicken, noodles... They have lots to choose from and they knock it out of the park. So much so that tonight we ordered all vegetarian (with an order of char Sui) and I didn't feel like I was missing out. The service is always friendly, quick and basic, they don't fuss, but you will get everything you need and they hit the basic service standards with greeting, pre-bussing, etc. Then they top it off by bringing you a cute dessert cup at the end, that I'm not sure what it is, but it's delicious and we are always excited for it. Ultimately, I cannot understand their rating, they are way undervalued as a spot and I hope that more people get off the beaten track and come give this awesome small place a try. read more

I particularly like the minute chicken crispy noodles, which have nice crunchy noodles and perfectly seasoned chicken and sauce. Lots of veggies included too. 3/16/19 Had a craving for sweet sour pork, stopped in on a slow night for them..1 of 3 tables.. waitress greeted me with a welcome smile . Asked if I needed water and help with the menu, I said thanks but I just need sweet sour pork fried extra crispy and a bowl of rice. About 5 minutes later, whooo hooo.. perfect bite size chunks of pork fried up crisp nice sauce drizzled over not soaking in it with onions and bell peppers. Great tastes, service and price! This was my first time here- came for a party. I definitely wouldn't have come here on my own. The restaurant has ample parking so that's good- especially since there's limited street parking in the area. I liked that the round table seated 8. Some places do 10 to a table and it feels very tight and crowded. The service was attentive. The reason for the 3 star rating is because the food was disappointing. The Chinese chicken salad was literally the iceberg lettuce mix you can get from Costco and some shredded chicken and won ton strips. The salad was moist so I thought maybe the dressing was clear but it really tasted like water. Absolutely no flavor. The seafood soup was also clear and tasted the same- absolutely no flavor. Everyone was adding shoyu and other sauces to give it taste. There was pieces of fish and shrimp in the soup but even that didn't give it flavor. The duck in the buns were good- thanks to the hoisin sauce. The salt and pepper shrimp was probably the one thing that tasted like it was supposed to. The steamed fish came with tofu so that was exciting until you realized it had no flavor. Even the gaugee was bland. The cake noodles were crispy but again you have to add shoyu to everything if you want flavor. They also didn't have hot mustard at the table. The tea at the end of the meal was good- it had more flavor than many of the dishes. The dessert was an almond jello with a little mango purée on top- that was good! Even with all the dishes that were served, we were still hungry when we left. It's never a good thing when you have to stop at McDonalds on your way home from eating at a restaurant. Definitely won't be back to this place unless we get invited to another party and even then, now we know to eat before we go. read more

I've been going to Mini Garden for years, ever since they were in Chinatown (where Lucky Belly is now), to the Mini Garden express in Ranch 99 (still there, I think), to the Beretania location. The only problem with this place is that everything seems to have gone down in quality/quantity over the years.. It was unanimous that we won't be coming back anymore, there's other places that are way better Chinese food and better prices/service/portion. LOCATION / ATMOSPHERE On Beretania St., left hand side before the laundromat/gas station on the corner of McCully. There's street parking in front of the restaurant and a parking lot right after the restaurant. Inside is spacious and clean. SERVICE As any typical Chinese restaurant, I don't expect good service. However, on top of the meh service, there have been a few times where this place has let us down... 1. At one point, they offered 20% off for all take out orders...we order take out (4-5 dishes) and suddenly its NOT 20% off (even though the sign was very loud and clear hanging outside). They said "its only 20% off SOME dishes"....really? Because the last time we had ordered the same thing to go (one week earlier), they honored the full 20% off as advertised. 2. We ordered 4 entree dishes, so easily we could order the lobster for $11.99 (as advertised, it's "$11.99 lobster with one entree purchase", whereas regularly it's $15 or $16.) So we ordered a total of 5 dishes. Well... at the end, we had a gift certificate, but the waitress snuck in a $5 "other food" on our bill. Turned out they had to charge us full price for the lobster because we were using a gift certificate. REALLY? Shouldn't the gift certificate act as regular money? FOOD As mentioned earlier, the food quality and portion has declined/decreased over the years. It used to be really good. Everything was just OK, but everything was smaller portion/less meat. The lobster was very small, the clams were small portion, the black bean sauce was bland, wonton soup too salty, roast duck pieces very small/no meat. I come here when my mom is too lazy to cook--or every other week. The menu is so vast that there's something for everyone. For lunch, I get the Won Ton Noodle Soup or the Seafood Cake Noodle. They're fast, fantastic, and filling. If you're going with a group, order a bunch of dishes to share. I can't get enough of the Crispy Shrimp Balls, Volcano Beef, and Salt and Pepper anything (pork, squid, etc.). Lobster special is $11.95 with an entree. Entrees range from $10-15. Take out is 20% off. Vegetarian options are available which is a plus because most Chinese restaurants don't have much variety there. Ordered the Volcano Beef and my food was literally on fire (check my pictures). Pork chop with pineapple was okay. Liked the hot and sour soup. My favorite was the diced chicken with salted fish and soft tofu. Complimentary dessert included! I often come here for lunch one of my favorites is the Crispy Gau Gee they are quite friendly and remember me when we come in. The portions are large and quite filling and as a bonus that the downtown one doesn't give you is a small bowl of I think almond Jello with strawberry flavoring. I've also have had the beef brisket and that is pretty good in comparison to other Chinese restaurants. Service is quite fast and parking unless it's a rainy day is quite ample if it is pouring heavily part of the parking lot may be flooded so it might be tight unless you want to wade through the water. read more

It's hard to find delicious Chinese food in Hawaii. Mini Garden offers a lot of dishes, but I think their cake noodle is superb!! The best on the island and on top of that it's super affordable. 20% off if you order take out too! Last night my family and I ordered crispy gau gee cake noodles, beef tendon noodles in soup and gau gee noodles in soup. All three were generously portioned and nicely flavored. Service was a bit slow for the beef noodles, but that's okay- the restaurant was a bit busy, so I can understand. They offer smoothies but omg the machine is always broken! I wish they would either remove the smoothies from the menu or fix the machine ASAP!! At the end of every meal, they offer free dessert! It's a sweet, milky almond tofu with a bit of artificial fruit syrup. Last night it was peach. (See empty plate picture) Portions were alright, more individual than familysized. String beans: delicious, on par with the best of them. Good portion, beans were fresh. Black bean chicken: also great. I came here a year ago and got my go to fave/measuring stick of beef chow fun with gravy, and was disappointed. It was not flavorful and beef was chewy. This, however, was delicious! Good flavor, lots of black beans, sweet onions, fresh water chestnuts (those are a pain to peel, so props to anywhere that serves them!), tender chicken. Shrimp: was just ok, about 16 good size shrimp (not deveined), good amount of walnuts (let's be real, that's always the best part), but shrimp weren't crispy. Service: a little lacking. Our water and complementary tea were all sitting empty for a little while before refills came around. We've eaten here a few times before because of the extensive vegetarian options. The food is always good but I can't say that we'll be eating here again after our last order, which included the tiniest portion of Honey Walnut Shrimp I have ever seen for $13.50. There were literally 13 shrimps in here. I counted them. That's over $1 per shrimp, and they weren't the big ones either. Considering that they didn't taste any better than the $5 reheated honey shrimp from Panda Express, I say do yourself a favor and avoid this rip-off of a restaurant. Gotta love this place... When you come in the sound of the clanking plates and the hum of the people lures you in to the savory smells of the food. Try to eat the beef stew wun tun mein (no, not the local style beef stew but the brisket beef stew with star anise). Or if you are in to cake noodle you gotta try the minute chicken cake noodle. I also saw lots of shabu shabu pots simmering in the distance and I think I may try that next time. The service is great since we have gotten to know the gentleman that works there, I think he is the manager. You gotta love this place, go check it out! read more

Just ate here for the first time because they had a deal on restaurants.com. Food wasn't half bad. We got the honey and garlic chicken and the spicy Mongolian beef. Both dishes had a ton of onion in them, which I personally love but my boyfriend hates onion. Still. I thought the food was good! We also got gau gee and spring rolls. Gau gee was awesome! Spring rolls were ok but that's because they were curry flavored inside which I was not expecting. The server was extremely friendly. And super understanding when my toddler threw her bowl of rice and it broke on the floor. We have 3 more gift certificates for there so we will definality be returning. It's a real Chinese粵菜 taste. We ordered a congee and the steam ginger fish, both are way beyond our expectation. Both dishes are not complicated but you can tell the "king fu" of the chef. And the price is very reasonable or considered cheaper than places in Honolulu. Will defiantly go back and highly recommend it to travelers. read more

We were rather disappointed in the flavoring and taste of the sweet and sour pork. My friend kept tasting something powdery. The beef with mixed veggies was better. But still not really all that great. Their service was good though. They were quite helpful and kind. They gave a free dessert before we paid for our check. Oh! Mini Garden is a Cantonese Chinese restaurant that appeals to local tastes. My aunt brought me here for a going back to the mainland lunch. The menu consists of the usual items that you would expect on a menu for this cuisine. I did notice a few dishes that were a bit different like Indonesian fried rice. The menu items that we got were seafood chow mein, Shanghai noodles and the Singapore rice noodles. The Shanghai and Singapore noodles are not specifically Cantonese, but it seems like they often make an appearance on a Chinese menu. Interestingly, the Shanghai and Singapore noodles were the better dishes of the three choices. The Shanghai noodles is stir fried, but the difference make is they put wood's ear (black fungus) on the dish. The chili oil condiment works well with this dish. While the Singapore noodles had a good mix of curry, without being too spicy. Curry is very powder like, but the flavor is nice. As for the chow mein, this was a disappointing. The dish was a bit too watery and full of liquid from the dish. I think if the noodles were more like cake noodles and the rest of the ingredients were piled on, it would make for a better tasting product. The dining room is casual, but very inviting. It kind of has the feel of a cha chaan teng or Hong Kong cafe. Kind of a little chillier than expected, but room temperature was fine. Service was fair. I liked the noodle dishes here overall. I am not a huge fan of Chinese, but had a Restaurant.com $25.00 gift coupon to use but was told I had to spend at least $37.50 to use it. 1st of all, they don't accept this for take-out although they took mine. 2ndly, the on-line menu is not accurate. They said someone randomly posted it and it is about 10 years old. The current prices are a few dollars above the on-line one. Everyone raves about the volcano beef. This is the 2nd time we got it and my beau said it was still yummy. My 10 yr old loved the roast duck stating how juicy it was. The shrimp fried rice lacked shrimp and tasted so-so. The choy sum with garlic comes in whole pieces (choy sum) which was very difficult to chew. It was better the nxt day nuked. There were conflicting reviews about the orange chicken. The 10 year old said it was way to sweet. My beau said it was good. Since I don't eat chicken or beef, I can't add my input. This is our 3rd time dining and I still feel it is just so-so. To me, Chinese food is the hardest to critique with what is good and what is bad. To me it's just a main ingredient surrounded by a different sauce, which is why the menus are so darn long. Most people always stick with what they know... And being an white haole, most of the time it's sweet and sour pork, orange chicken, and all other entrée covered in sugar. In this case, it I went here simply on a whim having driven by this place several times....let me say, I am glad I did! First, the joint was very clean and cute with Chinese cheese decor, including the infamous lobster and crab tank at every Chinese joint. Second, they played new age music... How cool.. I was ready for a massage when I got done chowing down. Third, the food.. It was a nice different change of pace. Most Chinese dishes like honey garlic chicken is deep fried and smothered in a heavy pancake like syrup..... Well, not here.... All the sauces were light soupy consistency that let the main part of the dish shine. Fourth, although we were the only people dining at an early dinner, the waitress was awesome. My water was always filled and she even served our noodles to us. The added bonus was a free desert..... Just because! This place has been around for a long time, and I can see why.
