Came to Nashville with the fam for a weekend trip. Stopped by Mission BBQ for lunch on a Saturday and it was BUSY! After tasting the food, I can def see why. Mission is a fast casual counter-service bbq joint. There was a line for the register when we arrived, but it moved quickly. We were lucky enough to find a booth almost big enough to fit our group of 7.5. Determined not to be separated, we made it work. We ordered several different meats and sides. The meats were tender and seasoned well. The tables were equipped with 6 different sauces. We tried all 6. I like my bbq sauces on the sweeter, thicker side and was pleased to find one in the lineup. I had a very pleasant experience here. I believe this restaurant was founded by veterans. I tend to judge barbecue by how well the brisket is cooked. Brisket is a tough thick cut of meat that takes skill to get it tender and impart a smoky flavor. The brisket was very good and had a Texas flare to it. It was moist tender and flavorful. The coleslaw was decent with a slightly sweet flavor present. I also enjoyed the mac & cheese. The corn bread was good, but it was not cohesive with the rest of the food. I know I'm from KC and I know I shouldn't be going to a chain BBQ restaurant but I was staying near the Nashville Airport for one night and needed a fix and this was the closest place that appeared to be decent. That's what this place was, decent. Had the brisket sandwich with fries. Fries were great, fresh hot and the portion of the sandwich was great. Good bark, good smoke, the only issue was the sandwich was way too dry. I mean, remember the cinnamon challenge where you had to eat a spoonful of cinnamon... yeah, that dry. Also, the sauce selection was cool to experiment with but they should be ashamed with their KC sauce. It was not good at all and tasted nothing like KC BBQ. The second we stepped into the lobby, the clock turned to noon and there was an announcement to stand for the National Anthem. Our bad day was immediately turned around. tldr: Solid but not amazing BBQ, counter style ordering, low prices, very patriotic decor inside, located adjacent to the Opry Mills mall. I am not from the South so I had high expectations for one of my first Southern BBQ experiences. The food was good but not great. I got a pulled pork sandwich, which had a lot (!) of meat for $7. The meat was tender and not too fatty (sometimes you get this with pulled pork). But it was also kind of bland. I had to add a ton of sauce to get the flavor up. They do provide six sauce bottles at every table, each labeled with a description of the taste. They had a nice variety of sweet, tangy, and more smoky sauces. I got two sides with my sandwich and chose green beans (bland, probably from a can) and cole slaw (very good, not too watery). The full meat meals (as opposed to the sandwich) come with corn bread. My girlfriend got a kids size pork sandwich with fries which was dirt cheap and actually plenty of food for a relatively small woman. The patriotic decor is a bit over the top for my taste but if you like that kind of thing they had a great collection of photos and memorabilia for all sorts of veterans, first responders, and service men/women. Upon entering, you see this place heavily supports veterans and I loved it. There are multiple options to order, but I chose the three meat: brisket, chicken, and pork. For the sides, chose macaroni & cheese and baked beans as well as a soft drink. The meats weren't too bad, in fact, it was pretty good and I enjoyed the different types of sauces. However, I really wanted to find a spicy sauce, but was unable to. Nonetheless, I loved the baked beans and macaroni & cheese as sides. My only critique was that my order was messed up and it was cold when served. Cost wise, it was in the $15-$20 range, but that can lessen if you go with a sandwich or just the two meats. The bbq is very good. I had the opportunity to eat here three days straight while staying at the Gaylord Hotel. I had the brisket, pulled pork, and baby back ribs. I also had the corn on the cob, collard greens, mac-n-cheese, potato salad and baked beans. You cannot go wrong with anything, but the best was the baby back ribs, smoked corn on the cob, and potato salad. The ribs were fall off the bone and they give you six different bbq sauces along with a North Carolina vinegar to put on your items. My favorite was the Smoky Mountain bbq sauce. I was skeptical about mall bbq knowing that Nashville is crawling with good joints but was so pleasantly surprised by the food at Mission. Everything we ate was absolute delicious. We said no, and so he proceeded to tell us how ordering in a fast-casual restaurant works. "Ok, so you choose from the menu, which is a la carte, and then you order at the registers, and then we call your name and you pick it up and eat it at your table." Whaaaaaat? You mean I can't just stand by the kitchen and demand that the cooks throw chunks of barbecue pork into my open mouth? I've never been to a restaurant before in my entire life, so thank goodness you're here, or else I would have been completely lost. So that happened. Then we finally get to the register, and we're waiting in line to order, and a woman behind the register starts waiving her arms in our direction and yells, "Hi guys!" Which is the customary American signal for "I'm ready to help you, so please come to my register so I can take your order." Or so I thought. We walk to her register, but another customer comes out of nowhere and goes, "Um, excuse me. It's MY turn to order." Because as it turns out, you just cut in front of her accidentally on your way to the woman who you thought was standing behind the register to take orders. As it turns out, the woman at the register is just there to stand behind a closed register and yell, "Hi, guys!" to people who walk in the door. I'm not even kidding you -- it's so confusing and maddening. So there's that, too. Also, I found a huge chunk of gristle in my pulled pork sandwich. My husband got the brisket, and he said it was very fatty, in a not-good way. After hitting the mall for holiday shopping, we stopped in at Mission BBQ. The entrance is outside the mall by the parking lot, so don't bother going inside the mall looking for it. It's next to H&M. When we walked in, we were immediately hit with the delicious aroma of BBQ. There are several BBQ options, including pulled pork, chicken, brisket, chopped brisket, turkey, and ribs. All of the meats are dry-rubbed and without sauce, except for the chopped brisket which does have sauce. I ordered the two meat combo of pulled pork and turkey. It came with one side dish, corn bread, and a drink. I chose the mac'n'cheese and was very happy with my choice. My wife had the chopped brisket and she devoured it. Our kids both had the pulled pork sliders with fries on the side. They all enjoyed fresh squeezed lemonade to drink. I had a tall boy Coors Light and it came with a free Mission BBQ beer coozie. Oh my goodness! This place is amazing! While traveling through Nashville, we used Yelp to find a good BBQ place and Mission BBQ did not disappoint! Everything was extremely fresh, the brisket and pulled pork were incredibly moist, and the sides are all delicious! Every table has an array of BBQ sauces from all areas of the country.
