I had the pleasure of having this delicious food twice in the past week and whoo! They are introducing new family style meals that you can preorder, and I think that's the way to go. The price is good to feed a family, and my food was well packed and ready for me right at my pick up time, there was no waiting. If you're going for fried fish, get the swai for a milder flavor. I'm not a big fish eater, but with that swai and the seasoning baby, I could gobble up a whole tray of it! I also love their Mac and cheese and the green beans. Oh and that cornbread was the perfect texture and sweetness. The only thing that would improve things is if I could get a slightly larger size for the family meals. Yes please! This has been a place I have been wanting to try. On paper, it has things I'm rooting for on paper... 1. It seems like a small place starting up. 2. It's a local business I can support. 3. it's soulfood in a primarily white area so it's a scarcity which can cause it too shine(by my estimate). 4.it appears to be artisanal food, cooked from scratch, which is always preferable to something reheated like in many current restaurants and is actually becoming increasingly common. All that being said, the prices should seem fair by my estimation. I decided to place an order and called to get a recommendation from the establishment. I called up, and it was the chef! I asked if she could recommend something, and she couldn't really answer specifically, and I honestly think she took my statement wrong because her tone changed as if I asked "what will I like," and sort of defensively stood on "I'm the chef so I am partial to everything" which was a fair answer, but I would never place that form of expectation on someone, but rather would pay more for dishes emphatically pointed out. Call out something they think they shine, so to speak. This was a missed sale. That being said I decided to place a "safe bet" on your food, and go with soulfood staples, and stay under $50. Fried Chicken, Collard Greens, Mac N Cheese, and sweet yams with cornbread on the side. The food was fantastic. Hands down. Good for the place, the city, hell, the region. I hope this woman finds success, her business thrives, and food, money, and smiles multiply exponentially. The chicken was fried perfectly with a gently seasoned batter, and honestly, the chicken breast was my favorite piece!!!! When is the breast the best? This might be a first. Kudos to MGF breaking the code on the chicken with just some hot sauce. The chicken tasted clean and like it had a clean quality flavor. I know that sounds a bit strange, but it's true. The Mac N Cheese was incredible. Disclaimer: REAL MAC AND CHEESE. Not dietetic in the slightest. Worth every bite however. Cheddary, buttery, a bit of black pepper, and tons of love. The collard greens were delicious, and succulent with every bite. They were a bit salty, but that's the way they are supposed to taste, and I would recommend them if you like Greens. They taste like they're rendered in drippings. So good. Yams were ultra sweet, and may put some people off, but not me. I'll order extra next time. Super sweet. No complaints here. Solid side dish extraordinaire. The cornbread was simple and had a "sweet corn flavored cake" sort of vibe. Sugary and pleasant and coupled well with the other flavors. Definitely go here. Ok so decided to order offline instead to dine in!! Overall, 4/5 for me! The food was pretty decent the best was the candied yams and Mac & cheese!! I ordered the catfish combo Very flavorful and seasoned. I did not really care for the collard greens they did not have much flavor and bland. The service was good when I put the order in. However, they did forget our order of greens. But it's ok my brother goes there a lot so I'm sure he will tell them:) They said they have grilled catfish but on uber eats you can't see it! Thank God we finally have some good soul food in the svc. We are working our way through the menu and live some things more than others. Also my husband and I like our food heavily seasoned, so on our second time in a week we requested Cajun seasoning on everything. First off the fried catfish and shrimp are excellent! I asked them to vent the top of the boxes so that the food wouldn't get soggy and it did the trick. All of the sides so far are great. We wanted a bit more salt on our cabbage but it was herbaceous and buttery. The greens don't have much vinegar but they were delicious. The yams are sweet but we mix all our sides together so we were good. The fried chicken again with added Cajun seasoning was excellent! We were not huge fans of the beef ribs as they weren't very tender but there was a little of food. I would try it again but this time on rice and gravy and smother them. We have only tried the peach cobbler egg rolls for dessert. They were really delicious but in the to go container the skins got soggy and there was too much wrapper to filling ratio. But again still delicious! Mac and cheese yummy made with shells but really cheesy. As foodies we really want this small business to survive. There are t many options that aren't chains. So try them out and support. Just wanted point out though that this is not a sit down restaurant. You order and pick up. I believe you can order there as well. But the first time I called it in and the second time we used Grub Hub Oh and last on our last order they were so kind to include a handwritten thank you note. First off, I want to thank the owner for bringing this to SCV. We really don't have many choices when it comes to authentic southern food. I was so shocked when I found this place! It's inside the SCV Hub where you can order on a kiosk and you have 18 restaurants to choose from. I came solely for this place. Ordering was easy and there was someone up front who helped to explain how it works. I wanted the fried catfish because I've never had catfish but it was sold out. So I had the California Fried Seafood plate with mac&cheese and then I added a side of collard greens (something else I've never had before) and the strawberry dessert. It also came with cornbread. Everything was so delicious! The breading on the fish (red snapper fish... I had to google that bc I didn't know what it was ) and shrimp was soooo good. It came with some hot sauce as well. The cornbread was top tier. The collard greens were an interesting taste. I liked the way it was cooked and it almost had a sweet taste to it but I enjoyed it. The Mac & cheese... WOW. It was soooo good. I think it's the best Mac & cheese I've ever had. Everything had so much flavor which is what I had hoped for. I ordered the catfish nuggets which came with 2 sides (fries and Mac n cheese) and I added an order of corn bread. First off, the serving size is quite large so made the price very reasonable. It was equivalent to 2 meals and a snack for me. Second the flavors are on point! The nuggets were very well seasoned and tasted amazing with the Buffalo sauce.
