This is one of those places that you know from looking at the outside it will either be absolutely delicious or terrible. Luckily, Mon Lung proved to be a winner. This is my go-to place if I'm not in Chinatown. Family run, fresh ingredients, NO MSG, and Dad understands wok hei (plus he makes a fine fresh chili sauce). Favorite dish is their unique take on Ma Pa Tofu, which is kind of a cross between Ma Pa Tofu and Shrimp and Lobster Sauce (so lots of tofu in spicy bean sauce with pork plus large perfectly cooked shrimp and a little egg). Sometimes I ask to include pea pods for a bit of texture---yum. Love chow fun? Order it well done and you'll get the noodles seared with crunchy edges and some give in the middle---how nature intended them to be. (If you order it extra crispy, be prepared for some deep-fried goodness). Their hot and sour soup is both spicy and sour (a rarity for Chicago Chinese restaurants, imo), the egg rolls are delicious and never greasy. Every one I've brought here has become an instant fan (I know some picky food -loving Chinese food eaters, too). The menu covers the Chinese-American spectrum of stir fries (without the breaded fried skin-on heart attack plate of Gen. Tso's, apparently---or any offal, for that matter) and egg-foo yung, etc. But I haven't found a heavy hand with the cornstarch (except for the efy, but that's everywhere) and they're happy to steam fresh veg and shrimp for my dieting dining pals. read more

We ordered food this past Friday for delivery, based on a friend's strong recommendation, and were disappointed in every way possible. We ordered three different dishes (a mix of beef and chicken), fried rice, and eggrolls. The dishes were incredibly bland and had a strange taste to them. No one finished their meal and we were all sharing. Two of the main dishes were still warm, but one was very cold when they arrived which was weird. The fried rice was mediocre and the one eggroll we received was ice cold. We ordered multiple egg rolls and only one arrived so thanks for messing up the order. The delivery service (PostMates) leaves a LOT to be desired as it took them almost an hour when we live a few blocks away. When they showed up they said there was a computer system problem and couldn't find our house because our address wasn't accessible. When I checked the receipts there indeed was no address printed out so the driver is partially right. However, you should be smart enough to call the restaurant back to get our address and not spend 45 minutes waiting for your system to get back up. All in all a very disappointing meal and, while many people seem to love this place, there are tons of other great options close by that don't require the hassle this place does. Best Chinese Food Ever ! I Give This Place 10 Stars There Really Good And Everyone Is Nice

Mon Lung is my new favorite Chinese food spot. I love that it's close to where I live. The pot stickers are my guilty pleasure. The hot and sour is delicious and I know they make it to order. I also have tried the Kung pao chicken that was really good! The mapo tofu is nice and spicy and really liked that as well. I have dined in and ordered out and the service in the restaurant is quick. The people at Mon Lung are something of magicians. I'm not saying the food is PF Chang's or anything, but damn. I ordered my meal for pick-up and was told it would be ready in 10 minutes. I was a bit concerned by this at first, I would rather they take their time and have it ready in 20-30 to be sure they mixed in the proper amount of TLC. Regardless, I went forward with a positive mindset. The lady behind the counter was one of the most sincere people I've ever come across. Although the only communication between us was when she asked for my signature, there was something about the way she said it that really struck a cord with me. (I can't put a finger on where this relationship is going, but I'll update my post if we decide take it to the next level.) I arrived home and dug in. The food was fresh and delicious, and I did not feel weighed down like I typically feel after eating Chinese meals. The teriyaki beef sticks were on point, the cashew chicken was tastefully smooth, and the Mongolian beef was expertly seasoned. According to their website, this restaurant does not use any MSG in their food. I was on the fence between 4 or 5 stars until I came across this information, and I am now standing strong behind a 5 star rating. Yelp should have zero stars because that's what this place deserve. Their manager is the worse. No concept of customer service! We ordered pick up and when we got our order we had a few (5 pcs to be exact) of beef on our large order of beef over rice. We called to let them know and they said that's normal! We might as well have ordered white rice with gravy! When the manager was asked if he's heard of the phrase "customer is always right" he said yes but doesn't enforce it. He accused us of possibly being scammers when we asked them to replace the order (offered to bring the old one back)! Why would we scam this stupid restaurant for an $11.50 entree. We were completely offended and got angry and he hung up the phone. When we called back he offered to replace it with a similar entree but we decided not to bother since this manager seemed like the type of guy who would spit in your food. I will never eat here again. My first visit & they mess up the order. Gave us a large portion instead of the small then insist on charging us the price of the large. How was I supposed to know that it was the large size? We didn't even finish it, I would have gladly let them keep the take out box of leftovers, but the waitress said "too late", didn't even offer an apology or anything! On top of it the other portion we ordered (also a small) came with steamed rice. I asked if I could change it to fried rice ... The waiter (a nice guy who I never saw again after we placed our orders) did tell me it would be an extra charge. Fine I said, thinking it would be a 1 or 2$ extra upgrade charge, They charged me for a full small size vegetable fried rice. Rice came with the meal!! I've been eating here since I was 8 years old, so I might be a little biased, but it is great. The hot and sour soup is the best I've ever had, and they aren't kidding about the "hot" part. They are accommodating about spice level and substituting veggies or tofu for meat. I would highly recommend the Singapore Vermicelli (extra spicy) or the Mooshu. It is casual and low-key, but don't mistake that for the staff not caring. It pains me to write this review because the food is great. But, I have to say this was the weirdest (worst) experience I had EVER had. No waiter/server has ever tried to make me eat something I didn't like or refuse to allow me to order something I do like. My parent, my husband & I went to Mon Lung this past Sunday for dinner. We've been coming to this restaurant since I was a little girl, over 25 years. We sat and looked over the menu and a guy we've never seen before named TJ took our order. Me and my husband were going to order to order the 2 person combo (which included fried rice and 2 entrée meats), but he suggested that it would be too much food. So we looked again and ordered Fried rice and Mongolian Beef. When the order came out my husband and I both tasted a piece and neither of us were satisfied with it enough to eat it. It wasn't horrible, but it just wasn't what we were expecting. My husband called TJ over and explained that we did not like it and would like to order something different. Here is where things take a bad turn... TJ begins to explain that there is nothing wrong with it and that's it's fresh and watched it being cooked. My husband: "There's nothing wrong with the way it was cooked, we just don't like and would prefer to order something else." TJ: (smile gone now begins to argue with my husband, as if he is going to make us eat the Mongolian beef) "It's good food, there is nothing wrong with it! My husband: "Sir, we don't like it and we're not going to eat it. If we have to pay for it that's fine, but we going order something different to eat." TJ: Again, still stood there arguing that nothing is wrong with the food. At this point my parents are uncomfortable and I am irritated because almost 10 minutes have gone past and this waiter is stuck on making us eat something we don't want even after stating we'll pay for it. My mom, sees that the situation is getting out of hand and calmly says, "Sir I think what my son is trying to say is that there is nothing on your end that was done wrong. It's just that sometimes different restaurants flavor there dishes differently and he had in mind a different flavor than what was brought out." TJ: "I understand but we don't do taste tastings here."( o_O What??? Who asked for a taste test?) "I know you're trying to help ma'am but you're NOT helping, so thank you." My husband is now upset and feel's totally disrespected say's, "Look, you take this and eat it yourself, give it to your kids if it's that good, I don't care. But I'm not eating it and bring the check I'm ready to go." TJ snatches the plates up and says "Ok, fine how about the chicken, will the Mongolian chicken work." My husband says "Fine...Whatever" to get TJ out of our face. At that point my appetite has been spoiled and my husband is steaming, so I tell him to cancel it because we're not going to eat now. My husband goes to the window and while waiting for someone, a guy who is waiting for takeout makes a comment about TJ's terrible attitude and states the only reason he is still standing there is because the food is good. My husband tells TJ to cancel the order. TJ says, "Look I'm not going to argue with you anymore, I'm already making it just go sit down". The only reason we were even still in the restaurant was because my parents were eating. We ask for a manager, from girl TJ sent to bring us our food. Her name was Wendy and she was very nice. She explained that the manager was not in and asked if she could help. We explain the situation and she apologized and politely explained that once the food is ordered there are no exchanges as most other restaurants do if a customer isn't satisfied. We explained that we understood and we were willing to pay for the food but he didn't want to allow us to order anything else. She look confused and again apologized. She said ok, I will only charge you for one thing, not both. We didn't eat, we boxed up our food and left. We left Wendy with a hefty cash tip and wrote a tip on the back of the receipt on how not to disrespect long term paying customers, who after that day will never be back. read more

Initially my thoughts on this place were that the food was decent. Nothing spectacular but if you're hungry it did the trick. The smoothies here are Terrible. They all taste like a mix of frozen ice with a bare hint of flavored water. Skip the smoothies at all cost. All that said, I am not sure if I am going to ever come back to this place after what I witnessed today. I walked in to pick up some food and in the empty restaurant, sitting at the back corner table were three employees. On top of the table were thousands of snow peas. I was MORTIFIED to see that this food that was being prepared on top of a regular dining table but with no mat or anything between the food and the table. As if that wasn't bad enough, to add to even more unsanitary conditions, none of the workers were wearing gloves and it gets worse. One of the workers in the midst of opening and separating the snow peas decided to take a break at the table and run her hands through her hair--keep in mind while she was grooming herself with her hands, hair could have very well been floating into the food--and I did not see her get up to go wash her hands when she was done. Let's be clear. If you're looking for fine dining or PF Changs this isn't the place. However, if you're looking for really solid Chinese food with really good food and nice people then you've hit the jackpot. I live right around the corner from Mon Lung so it's become a frequent spot of mine, and a wonderful haven amongst the 40 Mexican restaurants in the hood. I can honestly say both take-out and dine-in I've never had a bad experience. It's not easy to find good Chinese food in Chicago outside of Chinatown and it's definitely the best place I've found in the Wicker Park area. Went to this Place last night with friends. I had been passing this place for years without giving it much notice. Now that I finally checked it out I have to say that the food was much better than I had expected. Which is to say I expected it to be lousy because so many Chinese restaurants in Chicago are fairly poor. The delivery ordering process was so frustrating I finally gave up. First tried to order using their website but it kept stalling so I gave up and called. The guy answers the phone doesn't say hello or please hold. Then after a few "hello". "Hellos" asked what I want. I try to order and he informs me they do not take orders by phone. Ok. The online system doesn't work with iPad and I was able to get the order through on my desktop only to find out my $35 subtotal shot up to $44 with "service fee" of 9% and a $6.25 delivery fee. I use to live in the area for about 30 yrs.and have always enjoyed the food. I moved out to the burbs about 5 yrs ago, so I take advantage of the many foods offered in the city when I come down to visit mom. Mon Lung being one of them, so it's not unusual to order take-out from them and easily drop $65-125 bucks and make it a social gathering at my mom's home down the street from there. So again, on my last visit 11/10/07 I called them for a pretty big order, drove to pick it up and asked 3 times to the well understood english speaking person behind the counter if the order was complete?...well after getting back to mom's find out I had a couple of items missing so I called them up and they really gave me a hard time about it. I was not offered to go back and get the rest of the order. I explained to them the amount of money that is always spent there. I was talking about 10 dollars worth of food missing. I was told that the manager was right and the order had been complete. It was very frustrating to get such a final respond. They would much rather lose a great loyal consumer than to offer some type of solution. Everyone at the family gathering said they would never go there again. The other night I wanted to try out a Chinese place near me and chose this one bc it was close and after reading some of the yelp reviews. My bf ordered the sesame chicken and I ordered the Mongolian beef. I was very disappointed in the sesame chicken. I read a few reviews with people mentioning it was outstanding when I thought it was almost unedible. However, I was very satisfied with the mongolian beef, very tasty and had a great spice to it.
