Best. Italian. Sub. Ever. Yep, we stopped by just before the lunch rush arrived and each chose a large Italian sub. It was awesome. Perfectly assembled with fresh ingredients. Super flavor and lots of it. Prosciutto, mortadella, salami, provolone, LTO, hot peppers and pickles. It was delicious and the large is, indeed, large. Yum! And for dinner? I returned to Monica's and skipped the deli, heading directly to the register where the young lady behind the counter put together a pound of fresh fettuccine and a pot of delicious bolognese sauce. Ok WOW this place was DELICIOUS! A friend from Boston recommended we stop in here for a solid lunch to go. I ordered the caprese with prosciutto and wooooowwww it was so good. But HUGE. I could have easily split the sandwich with someone else. I mean I'm glad I didn't because it was delicious but keep that in mind. If you aren't super hungry, these sandwiches are definitely shareable. The bread they come on is soooo good and fresh tasting. It's not heavy or thick, it's so light and fluffy. Bread makes or breaks a sandwich in my opinion, and this place knows how to make (or have) really good bread. Their meats and cheeses are also fresh cut and extremely flavorful. It really felt like I was back in a panini shop in Italy. Honestly it was better than many panini I had in Italy so they know what they're doing here. Heard a lot of good things about this place so we went to check it out on a Saturday afternoon. We ordered ahead of time knowing it would be pretty busy. We were told it'd be ready in 30-45 mins but it took closer to 90. Another gentleman said he had been waiting over an hour after they said it would be ready in 10 mins. As for the food itself, we got the Italian Sandwich which was big enough to feed 2 people. $20 had initially seemed expensive for a sandwich but I think it's fair given the size and quality of ingredients. You can tell the toppings are fresh and high quality. The bread, however, was disappointing and seemed stale. Overall, this place is good to try at least once, but not sure it lives up to the sky high expectations. read more

It's a small shop where you have to pass through the turnstile to go into the shop. That's something I've never seen before. The menu is near the turnstile and it's hard to see once you've gone through the turnstile. The atmosphere was a little uninviting because the workers seemed like they wanted you to get out of the store. We ordered the special of the week which is Italian sausage with peppers and onions. We waited for around 5 minutes for the sandwich to be toasted which felt unusually long but it went by fast since you can look around the store at all of the Italian goods. We paid for our sandwich just around the corner from where we ordered. Near the cashier, they have fresh pasta which looks really good. The sandwich was warm and it was cold outside so I was excited to eat it. When we opened it, we saw cheese all over the sausage slices...the menu didn't have cheese on it. If it's mozzarella, I'd be fine with it because it's the cheese I like, however, it was provolone. It's a pungent cheese and I'm not a fan of the smell but my boyfriend wasn't a fan of the smell nor the taste. Putting that aside, the sandwich was okay, but I feel like Costco's Italian sausage sandwich is better and Costco gives more peppers and onions. My boyfriend and I went to Monica's on a Thursday afternoon. It was recommended to us by a local. We wanted an assortment of meats and cheese to take back to our Airbnb. Fresh meats cut meats... literally. They cut it every time you order... and a lot of it. There was so much meat on my $10 small Italian sub. But the $10 small sandwich can actually feed two. It was pretty long. Staff was friendly. The guys behind the counter were helpful. The cashier overhead me talk about spiked spritzer and how much I like it but it didn't come in a single can... so she offered to open a whole case of it. So attentive! An amazing tasty Sandwich shop in Bostons Italian North End. I went to Monica's Mercato because of the rave reviews. And as well a the boast of have the "Best Italian Sub" in the North End. Well My Wife went in for I'm in a wheelchair and sadly Monica's Mercato is not wheelchair accessible. But that's Old School Boston for you not a problem as long as you have someone with you that walks. So my my wife goes in and orders 1 large Italian Sub & 1 1 large Chicken Pharm. Sub. roughly 20 mins. later she come out and we tucked in to the to Sub Sandwiches. They where oh so yummy. We both thought the Italian Sub was high quality, fresh & delicious. To me being Italian myself and have had scores of Italian Subs in my life. As for the "Best Italian Sub" in the North End. I would have to give is a maybe, until I try Bostons other Italian Subs in the North End. The Sub for me was very salty & a bit dry.
