Let me preface, I never write reviews on here despite eating out often, but felt inclined since my sandwich was honestly underwhelming, and I was pretty disappointed since It is a $20 sandwich. I was in the area on a Friday afternoon around 2pm, I was in a rush to find something to eat, and had searched "best sandwiches in Boston" on Google and TikTok, Monica's came up so many times as a must try. I did another search on Yelp to confirm and indeed the stellar reviews to support were there - especially for the classic Italian sandwich. I chose to ignore few 2/3 star reviews that said the meat was too salty, not enough oil or vinegar on the bread, flat flavor and stale bread. I mean, the ratio of bad to good reviews appeared to be 1 bad for every 10 great. Every social platform, yelp review, google article said lines are out the door during lunch so I pre ordered for pick up around 2pm and got there around 2:15 and surprisingly there was no line. I went up to the cashier and got my sandwich, quick in and out. SANDWICH REVIEW: - I ordered the classic Italian that they are known for which is stacked with PROSCIUTTO, MORTADELLA, SALAMI, PROVOLONE LETTUCE, TOMATO, ONION, OIL, BALSAMIC, HOTS, PICKLES, some kind of pepper paste -The sandwich is huge, definitely shareable for 2 people and a good deal - All the rare 2-3 star reviews on here mentioning things like "stale and dry bread, "not enough oil or vinegar," "salt bomb" all turned out to be true - The sandwich was dry and overly salty. The meat was fine, but the salty pepper paste, combined with the lack of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, made the whole thing taste flat - lacking moisture and acidity. After a few bites, I took it apart and saw that there was barely a tablespoon of olive oil and balsamic vinegar drizzled in the middle of the 12-inch sandwich. Overall, it was disappointing and one-dimensional in flavor. While on my trip to Boston I was recommend to stop by Monica's Mercato for the best Italian sandwich. The interior of the shop was quite nice and the food came out relatively fast. I ordered the Italian and Prosciutto special. The Italian was not bad, it kind of tasted like any other Italian sandwich you could get. The stand out was the amount of balsamic they added. It was a bit too much since every bite ended up being way too sour. All I tasted was balsamic and salt. I think if they put a bit less balsamic the sandwich would have been amazing and balanced. The prosciutto special was good, but nothing special. Meat and mozzarella is always good, but the prosciutto wasn't salty enough leading to the overall sandwich being under seasoned. Overall, the sandwiches weren't terrible, but I wasn't wowed. If you are in the area I would give them a try to see the hype, but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit again. read more

Stumbled upon Monica's while wandering through the north end and I have to say it was one of the greatest spontaneous food decisions I've ever made. Got the italian sub and it was by far the best sub I've ever had in my life! Amazing quality with the perfect balance of spicy, sweet, and savory. The place is impeccably clean and charming and full of lots of little food items and things to look at while you're waiting on your food. Great old style Italian deli ! Bought an Italian for the hubby. The bread was chewy and the meat was freshly sliced on each order. The sandwich has iceberg lettuce, tomatoes , cucumber and they added balsamic vinegar to the veggies. We ate the sandwich hours later and bottom portion of bread was soggy. Next time I'll leave out the vinegar. Tons of deli meat on the sandwich but one can order extra deli meats for an extra charge. I've had a lot of sandwiches in my life, but Monica's really hits out of the park. I've gone a couple of times and each time the sandwich is better than the last. I'm not even sure how it's possible! The hype is real. This deli looks authentic. I haven't been to Italy but being in Little Italy and being the ONLY deli with a line down the street should speak volumes. The variety and being able to watch them make everything fresh makes it so much more appetizing. Due to Covid we sat on the street and ate it. I LOVE cold cut sammys. Especially Italian. OH. MY. GOD. One of the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life. The bread... so soft... the meat... so juicy and tender - I want another sandwich right now just thinking about it. The sandwiches here are also gigantic. I think I'm usually a pretty big eater and I could barely finish one. On the Cuban sandwich specifically, the meat is amazing and the bread is softer and nicer than the Italian we had. Oh and the cheese melted on top was super delicious. Only tweak is I wish the pickles and mustard came through to balance the richness of the meat more. The Italian was great - and to be expected from Monica's. I love the hots and balsamic glaze. The meat was also just the right texture and loaded in the sub. On the place itself, people were friendly but we might call ahead next time. Decided to stop by Monica's to grab a sandwich for lunch. There was a line out the door when we arrived, but it moved relatively quickly -- we realized when we got inside that the wait was because the store was fulfilling a bunch of online orders. It's a small and fast-paced store with fun snacks and treats from Italy, as well as a large counter for ordering sandwiches and food to go. We ordered the "sub special" -- imported mortadella, truffle burrata, romaine lettuce, Roma tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, and olive oil on a freshly baked sub roll. You get a HUGE (slightly more than footlong) sandwich for a pretty reasonable price ($18 for the sub special, though most sandwiches are around $15).
