Ambiance: Old school charm, meets classic style Service: Everyone is basically on there A Game, which is always a win win for all parties involved. Food: While I was waiting for my date, I ordered a Side Car and it was good. I put us on the list to be seated (30 minutes out) and we ordered the dry rub wings and their Szechawan (*excuse my spelling) Green Beans, both were fan-tab-u-lous! Our server was awesome and apparently my date must come so often that everyone knows him on sight... his preference in orders and the such. Since this night of dining, I have been at Monte Carlo at least 3 or 4 more times! Their wings are amaaaazing! I am surprised with the low rating for Monte Carlo. All of my experiences at their restaurant have been very good, but I do there for 2 things: drinks and wings. Excellent patio for a summer night whenever things resume to normal. I recently ordered some wings curbside to go, and service was prompt with my order being ready when we arrived. Ordered 2 orders of their Beijing style wings. These are dry rub wings that are super crispy with Chinese 5 spice blend. Hands down my favorite dry rub wing in the city. You get roughly 12-14 wings per order for $15.95 which aren't cheap. Wing sizes are quite good and they do not give any dinky sized wings. Trust me they are worth it for any wing lover. read more

Came for lunch and heard all kinds of stories about their wings. So I had to check it out. Parking - is hard so pull into the valet lot next to the building and the attendant will hand you a ticket. Put the ticket on the table as you get seated and the server will stamp it for you. It will then be added to your tab. No worries if you have cash or not. But something to tip the attendant! We ordered the Monte Carlo wings right away, as it may take up to 10-15 minutes for it to arrive at your table. We ordered the crab sandwich just to eat something non fried to pair with the wings. Wings - were fresh and hot. Take a few blows or allow few minutes to cool down or be like me and stuff your face and burn your mouth! That's the best way! Very crispy and juicy in the inside. The seasoning is so different and unique that at first you are confused on why but after awhile they get addicting. Note that these do not taste the same as leftovers. The outer doesn't get crispy since majority is all seasonings. Crab sandwich was okay, it needed more crab flavor and needed salt. The fries were good though! I kept my munching and munching and realized I needed to stop! Overall, I loved the old interior, the service was great, and I would come back to eat more wings! read more

We had and outstanding server, Amy, who got a somewhat complicated order because of food allergy issues right. 2 in our group had salad meals, one had the Walleye and I had the pasta, scallops, and a light olive oil sauce. I have to give Monte Carlo 4 stars because of the outside patio. It is probably one of the biggest hidden gems in the North Loop. I can't believe I stayed at the Hewing Hotel last summer and never made it around the block to this spot. Sipping one of their classic cocktails is my idea of summer. In fact give me another French 75! A perfect combo of sparkling wine, gin and fresh lemon juice. The outside patio has lots of seating and is protected from wind or any elements. Essentially is an ideal patio spot. You can make reservations for the restaurant but the patio is first come availability. The food and service did not disappoint here either. My grilled chicken caesar salad was tasty with just the right amount dressing. Service was spot on too. This is a location I could frequent often! read more

The only reason this gets more than one star is the friendly server (even though her moral was obviously low). Its a shame that this restaurant would waste being in an optimal location in downtown Minneapolis only blocks from multiple professional sports stadiums and would still deliver cheap product, poorly executed. The appetizer plate was boring and ugly. The green beans were soggy and flimsy. The chicken wings were fried just right, they could use a sauce and an upgrade in product quality. The shrimp cocktail shouldn't exist on a Minnesota menu (unless your flying it in over night stick to what's local i.e. walleye fish). The beef liver was gaggening. The calamari was poorly breaded, frozen product and again far from local. The meatloaf sandwich... horrible! It was like cat food with packaged cheap gravy smothered on top. The meat was thin, mushy, and boring. They should also consider creating a house made spritzer or soda or juice instead of having all soda machine product. In the end, this sad establishment needs to get creative using FRESH LOCAL INGREDIENTS. Be true to Minnesota. I can get every cheap product on their menu anywhere in the country. Sometimes you need to treat yourself to a steak and a tall glass of Chardonnay! For an appetizer we started with the green beans were recommended by the server, great suggestion! I had the filet minion and it was outstanding and cooked exactly to how I like it. We also ordered a New York strip, baked potato, and roasted red potatoes. Your sides will come à la carte here so it is a great way to try out a lot of options! Bread is also offered which was outstanding and still warm to the touch. The menu is very limited currently but still an amazing array of options to satisfy your appetite. The service was prompt, friendly and knowledgeable! I went on a busy night during Pride with a disaster first date. They were understaffed, as most restaurants are right now. There was a kerfuffle with the check as I was trying to leave without any expectation from the date and as quickly as possible. Drinks were good, what I ordered was disappointing. I called their manager when I returned home and explained that I had requested separate checks, yet our server ran my card for everything. I needed to express my disappointment. The manager was cool headed and professional in the heat of a busy time. Not only did this restaurant resolve the billing issue, I got such a nice call from the owner and his wife apologizing. I met some friends here for happy hour, I was really excited to try the famous wings. Pros: $3 Valet parking. That area is pretty congested and there was nowhere to park. The wings were very good, hot and crispy with a unique dry rub. Cons: It's expensive and there aren't any happy hour specials. The waitstaff were generally rude, I asked for ranch with the wings and the waiter said flatley-"no". I didn't push it but with the stuffy interior it felt like a depressing atmosphere after that. I have heard the patio is nice, I might come back for that sometime but I wouldn't come back here for the service as it was not good. read more

Quite disappointed that my friend and I made reservations for the two of us at 7pm, were seated minutes later at a table that was used for a flower display right where heavy traffic was and after an hour, we weren't even greeted. No water. No hello. Nothing. We had so many people pass us by. We wanted to give grace because the restaurant was full and they could have had a shortage of waiters/waitresses, but no matter how many people passed us, we never once were greeted or were told they'd come back. A summertime evening on the patio at the Monto Carlo makes me feel like I'm in a movie. The setting is picture-perfect. I feel as though Holly Golightly will be strolling through with her big black sunglasses to rival the size of mine. She'd want to sit together in the shade until the sun went down and we'd go on for hours under the stringed lights while sipping French 75's and smoking cigarettes until bar close. If you didn't know what top-shelf meant before going to the Monte Carlo, you sure will now. Their bar is amazingly beautiful. The selection is overwhelming. The whole interior of the restaurant is like stepping back in time, as I said earlier, think movie set, 1960's New York City, supper club atmosphere. The food is also delicious. If you didn't know, they have pretty awesome chicken wings. I haven't tried a whole lot on their menu because I love a good steak and baked potato, so I tend to go with the familiar (ahem, beer and chicken wings). The servers are attentive and knowledgeable of the menu, but the patio can get a little backed up when the weather is nice. The food and drinks are a little pricy, but the experience of dining and drinking at a Minneapolis legend is worth every cent. read more

Stopped by for a late lunch (2:00 p.m.) The dining room was completely empty with only three people sitting at the bar. The service was great. The Monte Carlo is a local icon - classic, old school, expensive, antique, beautiful - very good food & service. We had a meeting across the street and we had a few minutes to blow. So we dropped in for a quick visit, a couple of cocktails and some classic Monte Carlo Wings. The Monte Carlo has been around since 1906. Over 100 years and still going! The decor is incredible. According to our bartender (with a 40 year service record), the only thing left that's completely original is the amazing antique tin ceiling. Still, there are lots of other old school features that look like they date before WWII. The space reminds me of the old luxury hotel from the 1980 movie, The Shining. But I've never spotted Jack Nicholson or any ghosts...so far. The service was impeccable, as always. Sometimes the servers are a bit snobby. But somehow this seems to fit with the whole atmosphere of this place. The food was great, as always. It's pricey though. We dropped almost 50 bucks for 2 drinks and 1 appetizer. I got all dressed up and decided to wear my favorite news boy hat, picked up my date, then struggled to find parking near Monte Carlo (strike1). As soon as I walked into the door, I was greeted with a perfunctory smile by a waitress who informed me that men are not allowed to wear hats in their establishment (strike2). What restaurants mandates the removal of hats? What restaurant has a dress code? Monte Carlo. Lame! Let's just say I will not return to this place. Worst customer service I've experienced all year! Frequent this place since close to condo. Always enjoy sitting at the bar & sipping a Cosmopolitan admiring the impressive collection of liquor. At least two pours leave the shaker so its almost like getting a 2 for 1 ever time. I've sat 2 seats down from Brian Setzer who hangs here from time to time. Another time a bartender gave me shot of Laphroaig to try after a decent run of a tab. The dry rub chicken wings are some of the best in town- the cinnamon & nutmeg addition rivals Art Song's rub. The hearty Caesar salad is excellent and will delight especially if accompanied by their crusty bread and light whipped butter. The cod fish n chips is great, but I've been disappointed by the walleye. The staff is always super friendly and accommodating though and make up for any food mishaps. I've been here many times and each time both the food and service has been great. My most recent dining experience here was on a Thursday night for my birthday. We ate in the outdoor seating area which is one of my favorite outdoor dining spots. It is spacious and with the gorgeous 19th century brick buildings surrounding it feels like some sort of old world plaza. I usually order the Charlie's kitchen sandwich, this is, besides extremely delicious also a piece of Minneapolis history. This was one of the signature items at the legendary Charlie's Cafe Exceptionale which is probably the most famous Minneapolis fine dining establishment of the past (see my image scan). They also serve Charlie's potato salad, I don't usually like potato salad but this stuff is great, and if I like it I can only imagine what someone who likes potato salad would think of it. Another thing that I recommend here is thier fish and chips, delicious freshwater Atlantic cod with just the right amount of batter flavor, absolutely delicious. The other thing that is great about the Monte carlo is that the prices are very reasonable for what you get, I would compare it to the prices at Chammps or Applebees, maybe even better, after all that Charlie's sandwich for example is made with filet mignon and is not quite 15 bucks, I bet that would be over $20.00 in most places, and unlike alot of places Downtown they have the same Menu for lunch and dinner, same prices too. The Monte Carlo is about the perfect high end place for people that are comfortable in the upscale suburban chain places but would like something more unique with better food. read more

Someone told me this place had the best wings in the Twin Cities, and I had to see for myself. I was a little disappointed at first, as their wings are served dry. I love a good buffalo, BBQ, or similar wing, dripping with sauce. Apparently their sister restaurant does wet wings and I need to try them. But my disappointment didnt last long. The dry rub wings are flavorful, crispy, moist on the inside, just overall amazing. I dipped them in ranch and also in the sauce that came with the green beans just to try. Speaking of which-- the green beans. OMG. They are quite spicy, and who thought vegetables could have this much flavor. I've been thinking about the wings AND the green beans since the last time I was in the Twin Cities. I'm almost ready to drive back just to get some.
