We went 2 Mosca's last nite n everything was great .. The service was terrific, the servers were very attentive, they were always checking on us n even explain the menu 2 us .. The food was amazing, we had the oyster Mosca , chicken cacciatore, chicken a la grande ( my fav) , pineapple fluff , the spaghetti n meatballs was ok ... We went here before the marathon to load up on pasta. I really loved the Oysters Mosca and had to hold back eating more because it's just so rich. We had the house salad, chicken dish, and spaghetti. All of it was really good and unique in that all of those options are familiar standards. That said, with the Mosca treatment they all get better. Service was more than good and the waitress made sure we ordered the right amount. I hope this place is around for 50 more years. I'll definitely make every effort to go there next time I'm in town. read more

Firstly, let me say I have been going to Moscas for almost twenty years of my life. This is no doubt the best Italian food available in the Greater New Orleans area. It's not just Italian food though, it's Italian with Moscas' own southern twist. Every time I go, I start off with the crab salad which is excellent. All of the entrees are amazing as well. For example, the Oyster Mosca is my favorite. They get a crispy on the outside but so moist on the inside. I am convinced that you will never find a dish in the world similar. The Chicken a la Grande is also a must-get. Then there is the pasta with bordelaise sauce. I also get it with meatballs and put tomato sauce on the bordelaise pasta, and there is no better meal in this city. Service and wine list are also great and this is why Moscas is one of my favorite New Orleans eaterys. read more

In the same way that Food Inc will turn anyone with a heart into a vegetarian, the smell of Mosca's will turn any lifelong herbivore into a cold blooded meat-eater. Have heard a lot about the nostalgia of Mosca's with some variable reviews that I'm not sure I believe. Showed up with a party of 25. Yes 25. We decided to skip the menus and go family style. Incredible choice as we got to try most of the menu. The service was impeccable and never missed a beat for such a large group. The food was incredible with the oysters and chicken cacciatore topping my favorites list. Either would satisfy the pickiest of eaters converting them to believers. The shrimp, pasta, braised chicken, and others weren't far behind and would get top picks from many reviewers. We started the adventure with the crab salad and I was sad when my bowl was emptied wishing I had more. It could be a meal itself. My uncle ate here in 1969 and raved about it, back then. It took me up until 2 weeks ago to get there. Now, I am a spoiled, Italian foodie from San Francisco and am critical. However, this is one of the best Italian Restaurants that I have ever ate at in my 75 years on planet earth! I took my wife and 2 cousin's there for dinner and it was wonderful! After hearing so many good things about Mosca's, it has been on my list for a long time. My family and I finally made it there for my husband's birthday last month. The building is very unassuming and we had to pick our way through wet grass and mud to get to the front door. However, in New Orleans, this should not put you off. When I called for reservations, my choices for time slots were very limited, so I was surprised to see a lot of empty tables. Many of them remained empty the entire time we were there. We waited a long time for our food, but I believe they warn you about this ahead of time. If the food is good, I don't mind waiting. My first impression is always formed by the bread, and it was a bad impression. It tasted like freezer or refrigerator. My kids ate it because they're kids, but I couldn't eat more than a few bites. We ordered spaghetti, and judging by the price, we expected a monster portion. The food is served family style, but the spaghetti served about two people. We also ordered the chicken, which, if I had made this at home for company, I wouldn't have served it. It was completely and utterly dry. The sauce wasn't bad, but there was nothing decent to eat the sauce with. No good bread, and they offer no pasta on the side. We also ordered the oysters, which were good, but again, a pretty small portion considering the price. I think saying it was a mediocre meal would be a compliment. I told the waitress (politely) that the chicken was very dry and she offered to make us another one, but we had already been there a while and couldn't wait another 30 minutes. What would've been better was to offer a refund on the chicken. We hardly ate any of it. In summary, Mosca's is wildly overpriced and the food is way overrated. read more

So, you go to this place after a long day of work. You pull up to a small house with gravel parking. You wait 20 minutes for it to open. You walk into what looks like a pub minus the cigarette smoke. There is even a bar stand, a music machine, white and brown walls, and a smelly bathroom. Then they hand you the menu. A small can of coke is $2.50, a plate of darn spaghetti is $18 ($1.38 at Walmart, folks), a steak is $38. Everything takes forever to cook and the menu is very, very short. This place has prices of a decent Manhattan or Loop restaurant, but the looks of a truck stop. Avoid at all costs and go to Wendy's 2 minutes down the road. My wife and I had a wonderful meal at Mosca's for our 39th anniversary back on July 15 2017. We had been there only once before, (for our 1st anniversary), so needless to say it had been awhile and long overdue. Hopefully we wont wait another 38 years before returning again. Since it had been awhile, before going I happened to read several reviews on yelp that were not so good, which suprised me but sounded as if some unsuspecting walk-in's thought this was just an old roadside stop, which it certainly could be by appearance. However appearance is not why we went. "We went there for the food and were not dissapointed" We started off by sharing a crab salad, then moved to Oysters Mosca and Spagetti n meatballs! All we had was Delicious! Sitting here writing this review is really making me want more! Be aware; For those looking for a fancy smancy place or a roadside burger stop, dont waste your time . Prices ridiculous!!!! Pasta bordelaise didn't seem fresh. Got the half Chicken a la grande which had a delicious flavor, but there was definitely not half of a chicken there. Meh is exactly what I was thinking during my dinner. Look, for the most part, this food isn't bad, I actually enjoyed most of it. But it's damn expensive and what was good were things I could make any old night of the week. Plain old spaghetti with a garlic-scented butter? Yum! I loved that as a kid! We made the trip out here on Friday night based on the recommendation of a member of our party who is enamored with the place. If I liked oysters, I might have gotten excited, but I found it very comparable to other hometown restaurants - not bad, but not worth the venture out from the Quarter where there are some phenomenal meals to be had (see Louisiana Bistro). The salad was over-dressd and oily, and the roasted chicken was nicely seasoned but nothing special. The sausage with roasted potato side is your best bet. Also, be forewarned - cash only. read more

Mosca's is certainly an enigma for some people. The first time we visited was over 30 years ago and were told by regulars that one really can't enjoy the experience unless you have a table of 6 or more, kind of like a big Italian spread. Portions are big for this purpose. We went anyway and just over ordered...I like leftovers. We always split the crab salad for 2...crisp, chopped iceberg and tomato with olive salad drenched in Italian dressing topped with white, lump crabmeat. Then it's Oysters Mosca, a casserole of Italian breadcrumbs and cheese, garlic, baked over a layer of oysters and drizzled with olive oil. It's a lot like oyster dressing, very dense with a lot of oyster flavor. Next is Spaghetti Bordelaise which translates to homemade pasta topped with olive oil and finely chopped garlic. This goes with the Chicken ala Grande which is cut up bone-in chicken sautéed in olive oil, rosemary, white wine and lots of whole pods of garlic...spectacular. The last time we got the filet mignon it was as big as a small roast! If they have Italian sausage, get that, too.We get a bottle of Chianti with all of this. Dessert is either cheesecake or the fluff. They serve nice dense Italian braided bread that's needed to sop up all the olive oil. This place never changes and most of us are eternally grateful. These types of places are few and very far between. It's original and it endures because of it doesn't appeal to everyone...that's for other restaurants to do. I went with a group of 11 guys and we chowed down! We had the server order for us and we were not disappointed. The crab salad to start followed up with delicious bread and garlic shrimp. Two types of baked garlic, rosemary chicken were served up as well. All of the food was fantastic. The pasta was perfect and the oyster dish was super tasty! We were stuffed with pineapple puffs and homemade cheese cake for dessert. It was certainly worth the trip out of the city. I will be back. read more

Ive had better food at a Chinese buffet. crab salad was out of a bag, chicken was greasy, bread and butter was hard and frozen, and they were out of tea. it's 2011 and you dont take credit card? you would assume that if you're making such a high demand on your customers by taking cash only, the food and service would be peerless, but this is not the case. if you wanted to spend $150+, you'd be better off getting a speeding ticket, at least the officer would spend more time with you than our waitress did. as a Sicilian, i would be ashamed to bring people to this place. Olive Garden has more flavor and character than this dump. you would imagine that by seeing the window units every 4 ft that it should let people know how terrible the place is inside. i have no idea how this place lasted this many years. it is a perfect example of Kitchen Nightmare's. read more

Mosca's made the best rosemary/garlic chicken thighs I ever ate, 20 years ago, and I've been trying to reproduce that dish at home ever since. I'm glad to see it on Yelp, and hope to make my way back there someday. If you're in New Orleans it's well worth the drive out there. read more

This place is as authentic as any food you can find anyplace on earth. It's very Italian and very New Orleans, even though its 20 miles away in a godforsaken swamp (okay, its on the edge of suburban Avondale). Their Oysters Mosca -- oysters baked in a pan with olive oil, garlic and other good stuff -- are one of the true New Orleans classics. A great place to over-eat with friends and fam! Everything was simply done and delicious, especially the spaghetti and meatballs - yum yum! The atmosphere is very casual and friendly. It's a roadhouse on the West Bank a good ways out hey 90. Huey Long used to dine here. Rumors persist the deduct box is buried out this way. Nobody much hunts for it these days, only occasionally. The signature dish is oysters Mosca. It world famous. Fresh oysters dredged in parmigiana and bread crumbs lightly cooked keeping the oysters wet, almost raw inside a crisp crust. Chicken catchatore is the other do not miss dish. It's an intimate small place where if they like you they will go beyond catering to your every whim. If they don't you won't be there long enough to find out if you make it. It's like traveling back in time 70-80 years to a different south where manners mattered and graciousness was just expected not marveled at. The recipes go back that far too but with more of an old world bent that is heavy with garlic and parsley. This is real creole food. You won't find any chicken fingers and dipping sauce here. I was expecting flavor of the Italian motherland but was underwhelmed with plain tomato sauce pasta that reminded me of being awful broke in college. The Oyster's Mosca was mushy and not at all what I had expected, the Shrimp Mosca was chewy and tasted fishy which brought its freshness into question. The rosemary chicken was dry and oily, and the garlic and olive oil pasta was nothing special either. If you go, I did enjoy the crab salad although the pickled veggies were a little overwhelming, yet the pineapple fluff was delicious, however the cheese cake not so much. I haven't been here since 1972. The place is a little newer a little brighter. I am a lot older, but the food is as good as I recalled. We had the Oysters, the Chicken Cacciatore, Srimps and the Potatoes. All were unique in taste and creative cooking. Unique only in the sense of other restaurants, other ways of preparing these dishes, but not to MOSCAs old style. Love The Red Gravy. The spaghetti and meatballs are just as good as I remembered, and the gravy in particular is full of satisfying stocky flavor and no sweetness.
