YUM! I live right around the corner and we were excited to see another restaurant pop up on this corner. This is an excellent sit down restaurant. We had a nice family dinner here on a Friday night. We called to make a reservation because it always seemed busy when we drive by. Appetizer of pita and olive oil with seasonings was warm and welcoming. Service was fast and friendly! Our waiter answered questions and made recommendations. All of us were very very pleased with our orders. Each of our plates were cleaned. Moussaka brought me back to Istanbul! The flavors and textures are absolutely wonderful! We ordered a lot of food for 3 people & happily feasted until we were near bursting! Let's start with the icing on the cake: the owner stopped by our table several times, asked us our preferences, asked about our food, and just wanted to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. I love that the restaurant is owned by a woman who's passionate about her cooking & loves to see her guests' reaction to her food. The Start: Triangles of fresh pita and an herbed dipping sauce (the bottom of the dish was absolutely layered with herbed, cracked pepper, numerous other spices, and sea salt with a generous pour of olive oil over the entire mix) were promptly delivered along with a carafe of fresh water. Spanakopita: nicely portioned with a great flaky crust & moist filling. Not too salty or heavy on the onion & garlic, Well-balanced flavors & textures made this a delightful start to our meal. I was expecting a watery tzatziki sauce to dip in but was happily surprised to receive a generous portion of tzatziki spread topped with kalamata olives instead. Saganaki: My nephew has never experienced the flaming hot joy known as Saganaki. The optics of the brandy being poured on the cheese and lit at the table is beautiful to behold---almost as beautiful as the melted cheese with the crispy crust. You can either eat this with pitas or as is. The outside was so nicely chewy, that I didn't feel the need to add pita. Red Lentil Soup: A beautifully blended lentil soup. Too many places in the Bay Area don't do this properly (or at all) & leave too many chunks of lentils in their soup (Ahem, As is traditional in Turkey, I squeezed fresh lemon juice into the soup to brighten it up, adding salt & pepper (I wish I had asked for chili powder like we got in Istanbul, but it was good w/o it). The texture was silky w/o being oily. I was given a 16 oz bowl, so I kept half of it for later. After all, we hadn't even gotten our entrees yet. The Main Course: Lamb & Beef Doner: Large portion size. The shawarma was nicely spiced, not too salty, or heavy-handed. Unlike so many other places I've eaten at, it was neither oily nor dry but make for a nice meal. The Turkish rice was fragrant and moist--cooked to perfection. Iskendar: I don't know which was better: the food (which was cooked to perfection) or the beautiful lid it was steaming under. The Doner was cooked like above and was placed on a layer of pita bread laid atop browned butter--enough to soak & flavor the bread w/o making it soggy. The herbed tomato sauce (kind of a Mediterranean ketchup) was thick, not lumpy. The mellowed acidity allowed the tomato sweetness to come through, & the yogurt spread added the tang to finish the flavor profile. I like to call this a Mediterranean open-faced sandwich. Hunkar Beyendi Sultan's Favorite: Oh how I love braised lamb...so tender & so easily overcooked. Not here! This chef knows how to braise lamb to perfection! Served in a tomato sauce over mashed eggplant with cheese in it! That's how you get your kids to eat their veggies! The lamb was so tender. You could piece it with a fork, but it simply melted in your mouth. No wonder it was the Sultan's favorite. I wanted to eat the whole thing, but the portion size was generous, and dessert was still to come! Nothing is so sweet as Dessert! Pistachio Baklava served w/ frozen custard: I was so happy to see it wasn't swimming in syrup or honey. The phyllo was light & flaky at the top, getting denser at the bottom. It was sweet w/o being overly rich. Overall, a very nice bite. My only criticism is that I would have liked a larger portion. Kunefe: I haven't had good Kunefe since my trip to Istanbul, and this one is even better than what I had there! The pastry strands were light & crisp w/o having the texture of shredded wheat. The sugar sauce was lightly sweet w/ just enough cheese to balance it all out. The toasted pistachios added a nuttiness I haven't found in other Kunefe. I really LOVED that it was served warm. The owner surprised us with another Kunefe she was working on for New Year's: a cold pistachio Kunefe w/o cheese where the pistachios were incorporated into the pastry itself. I hope she adds this to the menu permanently. read more

Pretty good! Huge omelets! My friends could not finish their omelets. One of them said they probably used at least 4 eggs in their omelets, they were seriously huge! My picture doesn't really do it justice. I was feeling healthy so I had a beet salad and shared a fattosh salad with friends. The food was spiced well, it felt fresh and brought my husband and I back to when we lived overseas. We brought along our 10 month old to Moussaka and he also devoured a good amount of pita bread and doner meat. The service was AMAZING from start to finish. Prefacing this by saying this was the best tzatziki and spanakopita I've ever eaten. The hummus and baba ghanoush was amazing. The pita was warm and soft and we had to ask for more of it for all of the dips. Service was fast, even with the amount of to-go orders that were going out. I can't wait to eat more of that spanakopita, unfortunately this restaurant is too far away from us to go regularly! I'm going to have to learn to make it myself, but I'm not sure I can get it this good! read more

We came here for a light bite after a hike. It was either Mediterranean food or the regular schmegular stuff. This Restaurant is located off of Bancroft/Dutton. Honestly the red Restaurant logo is what caught my eye. The restaurant itself is very sheek and modern. The upholstered chairs had a beautiful color theme that complimented the decor. The seats were very comfortable and had lots of cushion unlike the typical hard chair you normal sit in. We were greeted shortly and seated. Complimentary warm pita bread is served at your table. We opted for Artichoke Hummus and Falafels as starters. The hummus was marinated in artichoke with lemon and had full size garbanzo beans as a topper. This was really good paired with the warm pita bread. I normally eat the plain hummus but this one will be my new fave. The Falafels came with a wonderful tahini dipping sauce. The balls were stuffed with Chickpeas, Onion, Parsley, Cilantro, Garlic, Sesame Seed and Spices. We ordered 2 lunch entrees but asked them to box that up since we were full from appetizers and 2 glasses of wine. The togo orders were the Chicken Schwarma and Falafel wraps. The Schwarma meat was thinly sliced and wrapped in a fresh pita with a tahini sauce. This was very good! Our server was very nice, the food was prepared quickly and served warm. I just ordered my first delivery from here. Loved the Lentil soup. I ordered the Chicken skewers. I would like to recommend having an option to add an extra chicken skewer. The salad side was awesome. I really loved it. I ordered the sauteed vegetables and roasted potatoes sides for my vegetarian friends, I think the restaurant should consider making a dinner plate that has a sauteed veggies/potatoes, with salad, rice and small bowl of lentil soup. That would be a nice dinner plate idea for vegetarians in addition to the falafel or eggplant plates. Next time I have to tried their Adana Kebab. This restaurant is a true gem. It is nice to have a Mediterranean choice in central East Bay area. I hope when things get back to normal I would love to dine in here. read more

This is a solid addition to the area! Great interior with lots of light, and cool décor. We stopped in for lunch, and were pleasantly surprised. The owner was there, and kept a watchful eye on everything that was going on. Making sure service was excellent. As it was simply lunch, we only had the fried Turkish Roll, and the small Meze plate. The Turkish Roll was super light and came with Tzatziki sauce to dip into. The star of our table was the Meze plate. Fresh hummus, muhammara, and baba ghanoush. All three were really tasty! Came with lots of fresh pita bread to scoop them up with. The other meals that were coming out of the kitchen looked wonderful, and the aromas were enticing. But, alas, we were only here for a quick lunch. We definitely will be back to check out the dinners. read more

LIMONCELLO MASCARPONE CAKE that is in bold because it deserves to stand out. I am not a fan of lemon but had to have a slice for my wife and it was absolutely delicious. I had the Iskender (Alexander) and was expecting a pita to fill it with the beef and lamb. No pita but had to try before my waitress came back. These magnificent suprise was beneath the meat. Fresh, flavorful and low with limited seating inside! Took my friend here for her birthday. We were the only 2 in the restaurant even though they are now open with limited seating for social distancing and following the time frame allowance. We ordered the chick pea and shawarma platter and the doner (lamb & beef) gyro follies by the Lemoncello desert. Everything was so fresh and perfectly seasoned. I did not feel heavy or end up drinking water later that evening because so make restaurants put in salt instead of seasoning. This was perfect and healthy and I will now compare all other lemon cakes to this one! Light, fluffy and citrusy instead of acidic. True European style service with chilled glasses and water carafe for us. The service was friendly and professional, but not intrusive. We really enjoyed ourselves and they and the food made it an exemplary dining experience. I am looking forward to my next meal there. read more

Sounds pricy, but it comes with a choice of side and there is a table pita points with olive oil and herbs included. This is the best gyro I've had in the East Bay which seems lacking for quality in this department. The meat was tender and juicy. And of good quantity. Definitely the highlight. I opted for pita instead of lavish and was happy with this selection. The sauce was used very conservatively which I was initially put off by aesthetically, but the juicy meat made this acceptable. Also came with tomatoes and lettuce. I removed a star just for the lettuce. It was nearly white and they included the super crunchy butt ends. Unacceptable in my book. I'll come back and update to 5 stars if they improve this one thing. Lentil soup was abnormally tasty. Highly recommended, unique, and another star of the show. See you next time! read more
