Delectable Indonesian food!! Came here for dinner on a Friday night and it wasn't too busy. The restaurant is located at the corner of a big building complex and theirs plenty of non meter street parking. The place is not too big with only a couple of tables for groups of four and the menu is pretty simple too. Since Im not too familiar with Indonesian food I was super excited to try anything! The sate dishes looked really good so I definitely wanted that and they also had soups and appetizers. I went with one of their combo dinners since it included a little bit of everything from the menu. I got combo #3 and it came with three sate squewers and soup. My bf also got combo #3 and we shared their peanut sauce salad. The salad came out first and it was amazing!! It was covered in a peanut sauce and it had shrimp chips. They had a very good house spicy sauce that I wanted them to bottle for me to take home!! It was so good!! I love spicy and this sauce had a great kick!! The sate came out next and I lost it! It was so good!! I got two sate of beef and one of potato. The beef had a line of peanut sauce OMG!! My coconut broth beef soup was also very flavorful and very tasty. My bf and I devoured our delicious food and we're very happy we found this place!! We will definitely make the trip out again to dine here! So worth it!! read more

I thought I hated sate until I tried Mr. Sate. It turns out, I had never had good sate, and Mr. Sate makes some of the best. That Chicken Sate is amazing, with juicy dark meat and a nutty soy glaze. It's rare that I would prefer chicken over beef, but the chicken is the best. The Beef Potato is still quite likable, though. It's dry-marinated for a more shredded texture, and has chili sauce to add some sting. Perkedel: what's not to like about mashed potato patties with a hint of meat and scallion? Just try to get them fresh from the fryer. My favorite is the Mie Goreng, a nest of egg noodles stir-fried with medium spice. Get it with corned beef for to add some fun. Soto Betawi is a rich and creamy broth of coconut milk and beef. It's comfort food at its finest, and adding some tendon worth the extra charge. They also make a decent Nasi Bungkus, a banana leaf-wrapped square of rice with turmeric chicken, beef rendang, and veggie curry. Finish up with some Lontong, sticky dipping-discs of rice cake that come with a thick peanut sauce. I took a much deeper dive into Mr. Sate's menu this visit, and what a journey it has been. I already liked Mr. Sate, and now I like him even more! 4 stars for the sate! read more

One of my favorite Indonesian restaurant in LA (coming from an Indonesian). The food here is super authentic, feels a lot like home. My favorite dishes are the bubur ayam (chicken porridge), soto betawi (oxtail soup, not in the picture but you should try!), and es teller (avocado desert drink) If you want something simple get a nasi goreng with corned beef (spicy) and sate ayam. Honestly all the dishes here taste amazing, I'm always trying something new when i go there and my tummy has always feel blessed. read more

Unexpectedly good! Accidentally went here because next door was too crowded. I tried the recommended chicken sate, and it's definitely one of the best sate I had (and I'm Thai so I know my sate)! 9/10-great seasoning & rich flavor. I wish there was more peanut sauce though. Yummy Indonesian food in a cute restaurant! There are only maybe 5-6 tables, but when we came on a Friday evening, there were only a few guests. Free indoor parking lot is at the back, which is definitely a big plus!! The bakwab jagung (corn fritters) was pretty good with a little bit of sweetness, never had something in like this before. My colleague recommended me to get the Nasi Bungkus and that was totally a must! All the great stuff wrapped in banana leaf And since this place is called Mr. Sate, we also got some sate! Recently moving to LA, I was very excited to see an Indonesian restaurant nearby. I have to say Mr. Sate does not disappoint. The food was packed with flavor and perfect for one of our first lunches in the area. We have now come here twice and enjoyed the food both times. Some feedback I do have from my food is that I was expecting a little bit more of the lychee limeade. It really just tasted like sugary water and the side of shrimp chips seems a little bit of a rip off. For 3 dollars you only get 3 chips! read more

I just ordered delivery from Mr Sate last week, but today it says that they are temporarily closed...what a shame. BUT, when they do re-open I highly suggest you give this place a try. Every we had was delicious! Nasi Bunkus is always my go-to, and I wasn't disappointed. Their Soto Ayam (chicken soup) was delcious. Their chicken and pork sate were cooked well, even for a delivery, I was very pleased. Their garlic chips to go with food is a must!!! I've been here a few times and just realized I never wrote a review. Hope they reopen soon. read more

We have been hooked on Indonesian food for many years and drive to Los Angeles from San Diego for our fix. After a recent visit this has become our favorite. I judge most places from their Mie Goring (fried egg noodles). The extra spicy version here was a solid 9/10 heat with tons of flavor and bits of fresh Thai chili. I ordered mine with tofu and it was nicely fried but not greasy. My husband judges Indonesian Restaurants by their Nasi Bunkus (a mixture of various meats served over rice and wrapped in a banana leaf). He was satisfied with the quality here. The meat fell off the bones and the skin was crispy. It was both flavorful and spicy. To accompany the above, we got Gado Gado (veggies with tofu in peanut sauce) which was flavorful and a good way to add vegetables. The fried tempeh was also excellent and the dipping sauce was citrus forward with a kick to it. If you need more vegetables you can also buy a side of grilled or steamed vegetables. They made pickup safe and easy during covid by blocking the door with a table for pickup orders. Staff were masked. We look forward to returning soon. read more

What a jewel of a place! Delicious food, better flavors and tastes than Chinese, Japanese and Thai. Sates melt in your mouth, coconut rice to die for, and soups that are so tasty you don't want them to end. The servers are polite, warm and caring like your mother! The best Indonesian food we've tasted in LA area. Came for dinner around 6:30 on Friday night. Early (& lucky?) enough to find parking in front but there's ample parking behind and above, we're told. The interior was clean and bright, and comfortable. Host/server was a friendly young man whose mom is the cook in the kitchen. Coming from SE Asia, I was very pleasantly surprised at the authenticity of the tastes of what we ordered: Nasi kuning, nasi bungkus and chicken sate were tasty and generously portioned. The belinjo crisps transported me home, and I was happy to taste them. Sate was tender and delicious, as was the rendang which came with the bungkus. The chicken penyet quarters which came with both rice dishes was richly flavored and not dry. Nasi kuning came with a telor balado, perkedel, Mie goreng,keropok, emping and the aforementioned ayam penyet. Bungkus was served wrapped up (bungkus!) in a banana leaf with beef rendang, ayam penyet, telor balado, some cooked vegetables and keropok. We finished everything, and pledged to come back to try the other dishes, even if it meant driving an hour across town! We'll be back, with friends!! read more

Mr Sate is unique, it's my introduction to indonesian food, and I enjoy it everytime I visit. I like that it's a direct chef to customer experience. It's not as busy at the times I've gone, but perhaps people don't realize there's parking in the back through the alley. Took me awhile to realize that. lol. This place is awful. we got the nasi goreng with corned beef and there was barely any meat in it. then we got a shrimp noodle dish and there was no shrimp in it. then we got the steak skewers and there were only two and very little meat. for $60 if I ordered Thai food I would have leftovers for days this shit was gone in an hour with two people who had no appetite. very small portions with very little protein and it was such a disappointment I would never order from here again read more

As someone who has lived in Indonesia for ten years, I think this will be my go to spot whenever I'm in need of some comfort food. With only a few Indonesian restaurants in LA, I have been wanting to try this place for the longest time. On my first visit, I was delighted to find out that Mr Sate's foods are authentic home style cooking. They serve iconic dishes like sate, nasi goreng, mi goreng, soto ayam, etc... My group tried most and it tasted exactly like what I would eat back in Indonesia. The staff here are also Indonesians and are very friendly. Went there with friends for a quick night cap dessert. Honestly, it gave. Purr. The fried donuts where the right texture. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They didn't feel oily at all. The server also gave us some chocolate syrup and leche condensada, to pour over the dontus. Server was a real one. Much love. The coconut ice cream was also really good. My friend order fried plantains, and they were delicious. Not enough plantain options in LA - so finding Mr. sate was a blessing for a cute plantain fix. read more

Everything we had here was delicious. I assume this is a family business. People are warm and relaxed. We had a beef-coconut milk soup- fantastic. Mr. Sate is a family run business with hand-painted murals on the walls and serves homestyle Indonesian cuisine that reminds me of my mom's cooking. They have a parking lot with 2-3 spots around the back and few meters along the street. I've tried many things on the menu and its my favorite place in West LA for authentic Indo food. For the food: My favorite item to get at Mr. Sate is burbur ayum: rice porridge with chicken, mushroom, scallions, chinese doughnuts and crispy wonton skin. It's flavorful and hearty, especially on those cold and rainy LA days or any day really. The chicken sate is tender, juicy, succulent and covered in peanut sauce and kecap manis (sweet soy glaze). Nasi Bungkus is perfect for the indecisive because its multiple dishes with rice wrapped in banana leaf. Bakwan Jagung is corn fritter appetizer that's perfect to share with the table, or just order for yourself. It's all delicious read more

My coworker brought takeout from this restaurant and OMG! The stir fry egg noodles with the crunch garlic on top was to die for. Popcorn chicken was bomb too with the spicy green sauce. I don't know many Indonesian restaurants besides the one in Bellflower. This spot is delicious! read more

There is no way to find authentic Indonesian foods in LA at these prices. Most Indonesian foods in CA are OVER PRICE. We ordered Mie tek tek, cap cay, chicken sate with lontong, they are all b SUPER DELICIOUS! Will definitely be back here. read more

3.5 Solid place for a hip (too safe with the spiciness), but not too hip, traditional Indonesian fare in Culver City! Unlike its obvious competitor, Simpang Asia, Mr. Sate has a much simpler menu that is more solo-diner friendly. I decided on the Mie Goreng Combo for a good $13.65 before tip. Quick Tips: -They claim to have free parking in the back, but I'm not sure how big the lot is. -Ample seating for such a small restaurant. Four 4tops, four bar seats, and two 2tops inside. No outdoor seating -Perkedel is a pan-fried potato and meat patty. Taste: Mie Goreng 3.5/5 'Spic' noodles come with 2 chicken satay, shrimp chips and a perkedel. Noodles were not spicy. On a scale of 1- Howlin'(10) it was a 2/10. Full of flavor and rich spices. Cabbage, crispy onions, scallions, carrots, cilantro. Nothing popped, but it was a good, simple dish. Perkedel (potato patty) 3/5 was a little soggy and cold, but good. I guess. Satay 4.5/5 Best part of the meal was the satay for me. Juicy chicken thigh meat covered in a creamy (not overly sweet) peanut sauce. They were tiny, though. Shrimp chips are just shrimp chips, good. Price 4/5 Cheap for Indonesian food, pricey for portion size. Service 4/5 Slow but good. Not super memorable but not bad. Will try the Nasi Bungas next time (the mixed meal wrapped in a banana leaf) read more

This food is so delicious and fresh! We had the soup with coconut milk and beef. The beef melted in your mouth! The popcorn chicken and popcorn shrimp was amazing!! It has such a delicious buttery and crisp flavor!!! My son and I loved these too! And garlic chips! These are amazing too!!! We stumbled into this place while we were looking for a place to eat in Culver City area after our hike. Looking at a "Hot and New" sign on Yelp! and a restaurant that serves Indonesian food got me and my crews right away. We came into the restaurant with empty and hungry stomach, and fortunately we were served right away. There aren't that many items on the menu, but they have special of the day menu on the wall. We ordered Soto Betawi, Soto Ayam, Sop Buntut, 2 Mie Tektek, and 15 satays for the six of us. Sop Buntut was pretty plain, but the Soto Betawi was good and flavorful. Satays were good but tiny! I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to try their breakfast menu and other items though. Because peeking at the other tables they offerings looked delicious.

Ordered my usual Combo 1 with Soto & Bubur Ayam for to go, and this was probably the 20th times I frequented the Mr Sate. 25% of the time they are inconsistent in preparing the food. I usually give them a slack so many times just because they're from Indonesia. This time was unacceptable!! It made me have to post a review due to the very disappointing experience, even as regular. Boy didn't I regret to give them tips just for a pick-up order!!! The Bubur Ayam is definitely less in portion as when I put all the extras in the bowl, it only filled less than half of their round plastic to-go container. I thought it was just a feeling. But, when I realized The Soto is prepared luke warm, when I ate it only 5 minutes after I picked it up --I live in the neighborhood-- I know they messed up big this time It couldn't be because I took my order too late, because I picked up my order exactly at the length of time that they told me when it would be ready. The inconsistency, and luke warm food are annoying and unprofessional! It appeared like they half-assed my to go order just because they wanna go home and closed the restaurant tonight. read more

When it comes to Indonesian food in the area, there are strong contenders, including Mr. Sate. Rival to the more-famous Simpang, Mr. Sate holds its ground by serving a wonderful array of sate. I ordered some chicken sate, along with spring rools, nasi goreng, and mie tek tek. Delivery was quick, and we were ready to dig in... The verdict? Chicken sate was flavorful and the meat tender, the spring rolls crunchy and not overly greasy, and the nasi goreng wonderful with chewy rice and plenty of delicious veggies. However, I found the mie tek tek to be on the bland side, the noodles not as flavorful as the ones from Simpang. However, the spring rolls and nasi goreng tasted better than what I've gotten from Simpang, although next time, I'd go for medium heat, as I found mild at Mr. Sate to be not spicy at all. Overall, I'd say Mr. Sate is a new favorite of mine, especially for its sate and nasi goreng. Worth a try while in the area! read more

I love good to family run restaurants, I always hope they become successful. The biggest downfall with Mr. Sate is a slow kitchen and understaffed floor. I came in for dinner, after ordering it took a good 25 minutes for my food to come, there were several empty dirty tables. I felt bad for the severer, he was running around and at the same time prepping food Onto the food, the sate's were all delicious, I ordered several different types. The chicken sate's were fantastic as well as the beef and potato. The popcorn chicken and shrimp sates were good but a little dry, they should be served with a sauce or an aioli. All in all the food is really good, there aren't many Indonesian restaurants in LA, it's nice to try something different for a change. No parking lot for the restaurant but there is plenty of street parking on Motor Avenue. read more

The food here is authentic with good flavor. Being of Malaysian heritage we share very similar foods to Indonesia which the cuisine is often overlooked by Westerners. The only places I'd get my fix is from Singapore's Banana Leaf at the Farmer's Market and Simpang Asia on National Blvd. This place beats both those places hands down. I just was settling because there was nothing else available and frankly never liked it. I know new restaurants may have a slow start but you have to try food here because its seriously good. Overall I liked this as a lunch spot. I haven't eaten much Indonesian food in general so I don't have a lot to compare it off but the dish I did get was delicious. Server was friendly & helpful, he actually recommended the dish to me. I'd look to return back to try more of the options on the menu. read more

Not the end of the world. Just a rookie mistake, or sheer laziness on her part. -- The biggest offense was the dry beef. God it was awful. I know they changed the staff up front (they were still super friendly) but have they changed the cooks too?

There is a self service water station and the workers check on if you need any refills for drinks purchased. I did have to ask for the radish and then they brought out a good amount for us in a bowl. Theres a TV on the inside and for those watching soccer now, you can catch the game while eating your meal. Outside seating is nice and refreshing but can get a bit windy depending on the day.
