My date and I arrived at Mr. Shrimp and had to wait a little bit for a booth. We could have sat at a regular table but my date wanted a booth. It wasn't a long wait so everything was fine. We were seated and greeted with breadsticks and their crab dip to munch on while we perused over the menu. The dip was so good we asked for some more. Our server informed us that we'd have to pay for a refill which we gladly accepted. We started with the fried calamari which was quite tasty and the temp was very hot. Sometimes you get it and it has been sitting for awhile. These were definitely right out of the fryer. Big plus! I ordered the fried shrimp sandwich with sweet potato fries while my date had the fried cod sandwich. Both were very tasty. I filled up on the calamari and crab dip so much that I only ate the shrimp and didn't make a sandwich out of it. It was still very good. The Cole slaw was very tasty as well. Very disappointed in my dinner experience tonight. My fiancé and I stopped here in the spring as part of the Belmar Dine & Discover food tour but only had small bites so we came back tonight for a date. Our server didn't come to our table once after taking our order except for when we asked her coworkers to find our server. We had empty drinks for at least 10 minutes waiting for refills. When we asked our server for refills, a different coworker brought them to us. Our dinners didn't come to the table until an hour after we arrived, delivered by a staff member other than our server. I ordered fried flounder and my fiancé got a shrimp and 8 oz steak combo. She asked for a medium steak and got a very well done steak. My breaded flounder had no flavor, and I couldn't get any service to our table for 25 minutes so I could ask for cocktail sauce in order to make it taste better. I waited tables for 7-8 years and was stiffed by customers after providing much better service. I like tipping good servers what they deserve, so I felt very conflicted when I felt my server didn't deserve a tip more than a couple dollars. I ended up leaving a 15% tip only because my fiancé and I only had large bills to pay cash since we weren't able to get our bill collected to pay with a card. Manager was in the dining room talking to a single table for 20 minutes and didn't stop anywhere else or even look around to see how dinner service was going. It's been 3 years since our last visit to Mr Shrimp. Since it was my wife's B-day, she wanted the lobster. I went with the Mr Shrimp Fried combo -- picked the fried shrimp, fried scallops, and flounder. My Father-In-Law had the soft shell crab and my Mother-Law had the fried shrimp platter. My wife & Father-In-Law shared a dozen clams on the half shell as an appetizer. Wife thought they were just "OK". Meals came out a short time later. I thought my fried shrimp and scallops were both good, but I was underwhelmed with the quality of the flounder. If I ever came back to Mr Shrimp, I would only order the shrimp and scallops, not the fish. My wife thought her lobster was a bit overcooked, and it seemed like it was mostly shell, not enough meat. She did not get her lobster-fix at all. Her corn was fresh (still silk on it), it was very good. My Father-In-Law enjoyed his soft shell crabs, even though they were obviously frozen, they were not "tinnies" as he called them (a local term when the shell goes hard, from what I understand). My Mother-In-Law liked her fried shrimp also. I downgraded this review to 4 Stars from my previous review. Not worth it. At all. My friends and I went to Mr. Shrimp on Sunday night... ordered the calamari with Thai chili sauce. It was good! We asked the waitress for utensils and she goes "That is the hosts job. Not my fault!" We honestly don't care who's fault it was.... We just asked for utensils. The clam chowder was okay. More of a soup than a chowder. Then we ordered our dinner. An hour goes by... place now closes in 5 minutes we still didn't get our food. When we finally got our food, our steak we ordered medium rare and medium were both well done. *pictured* Not at all what we wanted.... Waited for the server to acknowledge us for about 30 min (there was maybe 2 other tables in the entire restaurant....) and when she finally came over, she came to ask if we were finished. Didn't even have a chance to tell her about our food at this point. Service was horrible to say the least, the bus boy helped us out the most and was grateful to do so. I get that you should head toward the shore for seafood, but I wouldn't really say that about Mr. Shrimp. Or maybe it wasn't quite close enough to the shore. There was quite a long wait for appetizers on not a busy day, with plenty of fresh seafood around. It does not take long to properly cook seafood, especially small pieces thrown in a fryer. The clams were... mostly breading. But at least the little specks of meat inside were fresh. The soup, as a couple of people have said, is mostly broth with a few potatoes and clams thrown in. Yeah, not even chock full of potatoes. Just not chock full of anything. On the plus side, when I got my mixed shrimp and scallops (I love scallops, but this is Mr. Shrimp, so I had to split it), there was plenty of entree to go around. The shrimp were a bit small but tasty, and the scallops were... decent. Small, a bit chewy, mostly flavorless. At least the breading wasn't overly thick on these, and definitely not overdone. Cole slaw was homemade and fairly good. Overall, meh. I can get giant scallops at the supermarket for cheaper. I can bread them thinner and fry them more healthily. I'm no master chef but nothing here said "wow, please come back and eat these". You do get plenty of food for your money, but that's not enough for the 4th star in this case. The shrimp salad in the case said it was homemade, and it looked too good to pass up. Called and placed order for pickup, was told it would be about 25 minutes. After arriving and paying, was told to wait in the car and they would bring it out, no problem. 45 minutes later, my friend went back in to ask what happened and was told that there was a mixup with the new help, which is understandable during these crazy times. We had a meeting locally and saw Mr. Shrimp so thought we'd check it out. Beautiful decor, modern and open with high ceilings. Not too loud, just right with a good vibe. We sat at the bar (BYOB) and thought we'd start with appetizers. We ordered clams and oysters which were fresh and delicious. They opened them at the bar right in front of us which was nice. We also ordered a bowl of the New England Clam Chowder. And it was terrible. The clams (three) were good but the chowder was not seasoned and tasted like flour. Truly the rating is 3.5. It's a solid, consistent restaurant that does seafood well, which is difficult for some restaurants. All good, nothing outstanding. Big, open, airy so it can get loud. Both tables and booths are available. This visit was lunch in the off season so no wait at all. The place did fill up by the time we left. You can BYOB if desired. Service was attentive. For my fish and chips lunch, I subbed the chips with onion straws, ut oh, not available (sad face) but onion rings were. They were good, nor great. Nice size pieces of fish, batter was light and nicely fried. The coating was a little salty for me. Cole slaw was just the way I like it, not too juicy. The other meal was fried shrimp which were delicious. The steamed carrots were under done, just a step above raw. Cocktail sauce had a little kick to it but not overly spicy. Sweet potato fries nothing to write home about. Will be back to update in the future. A take out fish market in the rear of the building. Very clean and no smell which means the seafood is fresh. Wanted a light lunch as it was a late lunch. Small Caesar salad and a shrimp cocktail. Salad was plentiful and fresh but tasted like bottled dressing and not a good one at that. The shrimp were a huge disappointment. They were no where near jumbo as the menu states. In fact the sizes ranged from medium to smaller than medium. They were totally flavorless. The restaurant might have been counting on the cocktail sauce to add the flavor but that was way too spicy for my taste. I have had decent meals there but even then would only give them 3 stars. I went in to this business to order a takeout order on a friday night around 6pm. Upon trying to order I was told that my take out order would be a 50 minute wait because the kitchen would queue up the order with the orders from the dining room. And this was for a item that did not have to be cooked. I was then told that they could just sell me the basic ingredient of my order and I could have that quickly in a plastic container like I was buying a cold seafood salad at a higher price than the item on the menu. I have never experienced a situation where takeout orders are queued up with the orders they are serving in the dining room. I left and went to a better restaurant where I ordered a takeout order which was filled in a reasonable amount of time and had a nice meal at home. Wont be back to Mr Shrimp. read more

Visiting my mum for Thanksgiving from Texas, I searched for and found this spot for a good seafood experience. Texas is HORRIBLE for seafood. Mr. Shrimp did not disappoint. I kept it simple with a bowl of Manhattan clam chowder and a plate of fried clams. (I love clams, a shellfish impossible to come by in TX.) The chowder was spot on, and the clam strips were as good as I've ever had. Most if them were big and thick with wonderful breading. Super tender and flavorful! My only criticism of the place is the atmosphere. Grays and whites dominate, giving the place a sanitary, austere ambiance. Not a warm, colorful decor that I'd prefer. Also, not a fan of the gimmicky name. But the food was great! read more

Pro's: we were a party of 7 and we all enjoyed our food. The rest: We were seated in the back of the restaurant at a very large table with 10 chairs for our group of 7. This back room has no personality, it seems like it was added as an afterthought. The acoustics were poor and since the table was so large, we couldn't all hear each other. We placed our order and watched the tables around us get their food before ours was brought out at about 8:15. This was a long wait and no explanation of what had happened to our order. However, there were far to many of potatoes which was the number one ingredient. As far as my fried cod sandwich a big disappointment here also with no taste and a breading that was not good.
