We asked the concierge to recommend a lively restaurant with traditional food and good music and he wisely sent us here. The party atmosphere is contagious and long after we finished dinner we stayed to enjoy the terrific Cajun band. I decided to be bold and order the grilled alligator. The meat was tender and juicy and yes, it tasted just like chicken. My husband ordered catfish stuffed with crabmeat. Both dishes were served with a spicy jambalaya and a twice baked potato. For dessert we had the bread pudding topped with a buttery rum sauce and Bananas Foster pie. Both were sinfully rich. The tab for two, with a bottle of wine, tax, and tip, was only $75. If you're looking for a fun place to spend the evening, especially with a group, this is it. read more

Just because its right down from my hotel, after two days at the conference center, the evenings I just wanted to eat and go back to my room with a Mint Julep or a Hurricane in my stomach. Mulates makes a pretty good one of both of those drinks so it was home for dinner for two evening. I hate pretty light - one evening I had the Crawfish Etoufee, which I can't necessarily recommend. It was that extraordinary. I also did the Tilapia bites which I would never recommend - they did have a wonderful flavor but they came out so quickly that when I put them in my mouth and found them cold and slightly hardened, i wasn't surprised. The second evening I had the seafood gumbo which I definitely would recommend - it had great flavor, but wasn't that hot. The flavor was enough for me though. I walked away happy. I had the key lime pie the first night and that was wonderful - I couldn't put my spoon down (which I found strange - when you serve something on a plate, you put a fork with it, not a big spoon...). Last but not least, if you go around 5 its nice and almost empty and quiet and you can just enjoy your meal. Come 6, the crowds start coming in and make for some great people watching - and then the live music starts and there are older couples trotting around the dance floor with big smiles on their faces. My hotel told me that this is where a lot of the locals come - I'm presuming its for that music and not necessarily the food. Its worth a trial if you want the live music thing! Very disappointed. On recent visit to NOLA to join a cruise I wanted to take my wife for one of her favorite meals - Crawfish Etouffee. I don't like seafood but I do like spicey food so we decided on the 'Original Cajun'. I learned that the original Cajun's couldn't cook worth a darn. To start, they didn't even have crawfish! They did have shrimp Etouffee which she ordered. I got the chicken & sausage (in theory at least) Jambalaya. The Etouffee passed with a push - no spice and very small serving. The Jambalaya was a total bust - just a big plate of rice with a few pieces of pepper and maybe 5 to 8 pieces of meat that were about 1/8 inch x 1/8 inch. Meat was so small and flavorless it was hard to know if you were eating chicken or sausage. The solid one star is because the waitress was nice. We tipped generously and asked her to inform the cooks that Jambalaya was actually supposed to include some visible meat. read more

Low stars for service! Our friends walked in while we went to find parking, on a Saturday night. They seated them and they had to wait for us, for about 45 minutes. Upon waiting, they decided to order dessert and coffee, so the establishment would not get upset. Once they told the server, Jeanne, that they only wanted dessert and coffee, she literally rolled her eyes and stormed off to get a menu and their coffee. They were done by the time we found parking and arrived, so we ordered dessert and drinks as well. My friend literally was not offered a coffee refill once! We finally asked, she delivered, we said thank you and she did not say a thing but walked off. The dessert was fine, not worth the high price, but your paying for the live music. This is a non-smoking establishment, hence the reason we came here. This is more for the olde clientele...over 50, maybe older. Not our cup of tea, but hey, if you like country western, you will like it. All in all not bad, just not great. No repeat experience needed. read more

Just awesome. In town for a conference and was looking forward to trying authentic Cajun food. Mulate's did not disappoint. Despite being a walk in customer at 5:30 on a Saturday, I was seated within 30 minutes which is about what was estimated when I put in my name. This was my first authentic NOLA dinner and maybe I don't know any better but the blackened catfish and shrimp etouffee were ridiculously good. We had a large military trip planned for Labor Day weekend. A week prior I made a reservation for 28 individuals. The lady i made the reservation with was really nice as well as the hostess i spoke with. Fast forward to 31 August I went and checked my reservation 2hrs prior to ensure they knew we were still all on the way. We had our reservation set at 6. We came in and started doing our orders. We got our orders taken at exactly 6:20pm. (Reservation was set from 6-8pm) so we wait and fellowship for a little bit. At about 7:15 we still don't have food nor have we heard anything about it. So at 7:30pm we talk to the waitress and waiter to ask where the food was. We were told "I'll go check" and was never given an update. 10 minutes pass and we ask again. We were told again "I'll go check" and again weren't updated. At 7:50pm we talk to the manager and ask where the food is. He says ... you guessed it "I'll go check" at this time a majority of my party starts walking out due to extreme frustration. We came in when the restaurant was still pretty empty so it didn't make sense that our food did not come out. We spoke to the manager again ... he said our food was put in 40 minutes ago and it was just being plated which means that the order taken at 6:20 wasn't out in UNTIL close to 7:10.. why is that.. when we finally got our food ALL OF IT WAS COLD. No sympathy of the situation or anything while we watched the restaurant get packed and watched multiple seated tables receive their food that came after us. I am strongly disappointed by this experience and all we received was 30% off. I will not be coming back to this establishment. It was embarrassing to me as a coordinator for this event and to my party of the service given. read more

Once again, I'm so very disappointed in Mulate's Seafood Gumbo. The last several times I've visited I've ordered SEAFOOD Gumbo. I did so again today because I remember a day I actually got SEAFOOD Gumbo. As in all my recent visits the last several years I have instead gotten shrimp gumbo. A combination of tiny grass shrimp and fresher looking small shrimp. No oysters. No crabmeat. Just shrimp. The roux/soup is tasty. The rice tastes soggy and over-cooked. The service was very fast and friendly. I won't be returning and I will recommend Mulate's for their other dishes. Plus side.. the server took my Gumbo back and is not charging me. I objected but she insisted so I'm raising my rating from a two star to a three star. Server was so nice.. so I will now try their Roast Beef PoBoy. read more

Our night at Mulate's couldn't have been more perfect. Because I was trapped at the convention center for a long period of time, my options for Sunday night dinner were fairly limited...unless I wanted to make the trek downtown AGAIN. Mulate's is right there on the corner so my crew and me decided to give it a shot. Boy were we surprised. A live Zydeco band played until 10pm. Our server was attentive--enough. The tables are close enough together to make new friends. And the food was delish! We ordered: The Zydeco bread The blackened alligator The smoked corn and shrimp bisque The red beans and rice The crawfish étouffée The smoked oysters ...and some tasty Abita beers to wash it all down with. I ordered the grilled Cajun platter and it was pretty good. The spices were nice and they had a good array of different seafood. Wasn't a huge fan of the crab (which I was looking forward to). It wasn't pure crab in Cajun spices but more like a bready crab-cake which muted the flavor for me. They won back my good graces when I ate the pecan pie. It was so amazing!! Although this spot was highly recommended, my dinning experience was just "eh". I opted for the blackened catfish w/a side of jumbalya (which was bland and dry) and my bf had the crawfish étouffée. Both were ok. Maybe my expectations were high since so many people raved about this place. The drinks weren't that great and neither was the service. I didn't realize the baked potato had cheese on it so the waiter was able to switch it out for french fries (which was way better than my main course) but he grabbed the baked potato off my plate with his bare hands. It was fine. Nothing to write home about, but that may depend on where home is. I grew up exposed to this type of food, maybe if I came from Kansas or Wisconsin or something I might be as amazed by this a place as many seem to be. They do give you a lot of food, though. If you are hungry and you like this type of food, this would be a place I would recommend. The Zydeco Gumbo was just okay (maybe a little less okra, guys?), but the meat pies were quite good. We were a party of 5 (my parents, my kids and I). It wasn't a big order. We only had water. Two gumbo soup, two entrees, one small jambalaya. We watched people who came after us and got food. The waitress didn't have much explanation and tried to avoided us. Food: definitely too salty for the gumbo. I have had so many good gumbos in NO, this was not it, not a good representation. The okra was old, they were chewy. Over priced. Although the service was terrible, They forced 18% on us on the bill for party of 5. And it still took us long time to get bill after my dad stood up and found the waitress and asked for the bill. The manager took 20% off at the end after we talked to her, but I generally sensed that they didn't care. They are making money on the tourist/people near convention center.
