You may be asking yourself: why do my hash browns taste like chow mein? Is it the proximity to Chinatown? Can I just have actual chow mein? Don't ask dumb questions. Nick's Cafe has been in business 40 years longer than I've been alive. They know what they're doing. They have a giant sign that says HAM HOUSE and a square counter a la The Apple Pan. I'll admit, it would be a nice exotic option if actual chow mein was available with my breakfast. But, I'll settle for the best ham and eggs in town. Great corn beef hash. Nice variety of breakfast specials mon-fri till 10am. Amazing pancakes, only better ones I've had are from The Griddle, maybe Dupars... Big portions, free coffee on the weekends, cash only. I have been to Nick's many times even though I don't live in the area. I used to like the food but lately it's not good at all. I waited 45 mins for my order to arrive, terrible servers, they don't notice you. As much as I want to go back I doubt I will. Where is Kim and the good food?! I will never patron Nick's Cafe again: I made an order on Grub Hub for delivery and was given an anticipated delivery time of slightly over an hour. I thought this was slightly long, but I'm use to Nick's Cafe being anything but prompt; in my previous visits to the actual restaurant, I was always pleased with my food, but the wait staff seemed like they couldn't care less about providing timely, kind, or helpful service each time. After waiting the full 1:15 minutes for my delivery to arrive, I decided I would give them another 15 minutes to get here before I tried to call and figure out what was the cause for the significant delay. I finally contacted Grub Hub's customer service line a full half hour past the anticipated delivery time. The Grub Hub customer service administrator provided me with actual quality customer service and she quickly contacted Nick's to inquire about the delay. She called me back to inform me that Nick's no longer does delivery, but they apparently couldn't be tasked with the chore of discontinuing that option on Grub Hub. I was given the option to either go and pick up my food or cancel my order all together, and I canceled because my food had been sitting there getting cold for around 30-45 minutes now. I then called Nick's to speak with a manager and after waiting a long time on a ringing line I was finally greeted by someone. However, when I asked to speak with a manager I was told that "uh, we're busy". I reiterated that I would like to speak with a manager and was again told no. The food is always good, but this experience has completely ruined my opinion of the restaurant and its staff. I would give it 0/5 if possible. read more

I'm going to tell you a love story. Between a girl and a burrito. The machaca burrito rocked her world and then some. It left her begging for more. It changed the way she looked at burritos. She's currently caught in a love triangle however because She tried the chorizo burrito and they both met different needs. The machaca burrito is for when you need to be thoroughly filled and completely satisfied . The chorizo is when you don't have time to hang around and sleep it off, you have things to do. Possibly the best spot in all of Los Angeles. The Ham and Egg Scramble Border Style is the greatest thing I've consumed and all for a steal. You get a perfect side of hasbrowns, the most perfect salsa and you can even swap out toast for a very large pancake or biscuit for no extra charge. The service is fast and friendly. Good hearty, well-priced, food. Cramped like a typical small U-shaped diner of the 50's with very little leg and elbow room - but I guess that adds to the atmosphere right? If you're a germaphobe and are looking for a "clean" restaurant, I would not go here. I'm not saying it's dirty, but it's def on the grungy side and not on the best corner of town. All in all though, I did like the food and the staff were friendly. Walking distance from the Chinatown stop and across the street from the new state historic park. Los Angeles needs more places like Nick's Cafe. Yes, it is off-the-beaten path outside DTLA (Chinatown, more specifically). This is a place where you can just come here wearing your pajamas, it's that comfortable. You've done your homework and know the items that are rated most are the ham and eggs and cornbeef hash and eggs and so you just give a courtesy glance, but then oh wait, something strikes your fancy, is that biscuits with sausage gravy? Yes please. So we checked in on yelp on my iphone and I get a 20% off entre offer! Ding ding! The waitresses working the U-shaped counter are really friendly and they were giving us their tips such as if you want crispy potatoes, "get the homefries rather than the hashbrowns". "Try the homemade salsa, it goes well with the homefries." Our waittress also recommended to add the tomato preserves to the salsa, but I caution to use a little since it does make it unnecessarily sweet. Anyway, as we wait for our food, I reach for the Los Angeles times and go through the pages to see what's up with our city and drink coffee at the u-shaped counter. This place is comfortable and simple. Aahh, my idea of a perfect morning. The hype is true - the ham and eggs are awesome. I don't even like ham that much and certainly would never chose it over bacon or sausage. I had to give in to the hype and I'm so glad I did. It was totally worth it. Saturday afternoon. This place is pretty popular. After buying a 10 for $20 Groupon, I decided to try it. My friends and I ordered Gravy and Biscuits ($4.50 (4 biscuits + gravy)) and Spring Street ($9 (it's an omelette with all the ingredients such as mushrooms, spinach, tomato, and some of the other basic stuff)). Spring Street also came with 2 slices of toast on whatever bread they had, and hash browns. Oh, we also got free coffee (free on weekends) It was the worst coffee I've ever drunk. It was so watered down. Not bitter at ALL. No wonder it's free? Jeez. Oh goodness it was bad coffee. How could you mess up on basic coffee? I was not expecting much, but for an experience to be worse than I expected (low expectations included), yuck! However, I then ordered water, which made it a bit better. The biscuits and gravy were pretty bland. My friend couldn't get herself to finish one. Omelet was good. Cheddar cheese on top. Hashbrowns were ammmaaazing. Crunchy and flavorful. Toast was okay. Went on a recommendation. Arrived at around 10am on a Monday. No wait to get seated. Took almost 10 minutes to get coffee and when we did it was cold. Waited another 15 minutes to order. Good wad quick to arrive and it was tasty. It's ridiculous, though, to have to spend an additional $2.50 for real butter and pure maple syrup instead of margarine and maple flavored corn syrup when you order French toast. 2nd coffee refill was hot, last one was cold again. Service was super slow and the food arrived at different times - for a slow mid-Monday morning it was just bad. . Definitely won't be going back. read more

So lets see, they took away the King Eddy from me (Yes I love skid row bars and dive bars) and now LA is no longer the LA of my youth. Its a place of hipsters and wannabe screen writers. Gone are the places where blue collar guys could get a drink or a meal at a decent price. Nick's reminds of those places. It takes me back to getting up on a cold morning, firing up the pickup at 5 am to go to work with my dad, to go weld. The coffee takes me back, and their ham and eggs special is to die for. Friendly, polite service and tasty food. Tried them out for the first time on a Sunday, early afternoon. About a 10-15 minute wait for a table but it was worth it and there was a shade tent in the waiting area. I had the steakhouse benedict (skirt steak) and my girlfriend had the traditional benedict (with a ham steak). I tried her ham steak and liked it better than my skirt steak but this diner was a great find regardless. We got to use a yelp discount, too, though it's worth noting they are cash only. Nick's is a hole in the wall and I always come back for more. I specifically come here for their traditional eggs benedict (only served on weekends). They perfected the hollandaise sauce and give you a nice big thick cut of honey smoked ham which I believe they slow cook there. Their salsa use to be super bomb. We would buy a whole mason jar worth but im not sure what happened because it tastes like they changed the recipe and its not for the better. Their home potatoes are deliciously cooked with onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms. Cripsy on the outside and soft on the inside (on a good day). I would give it 5 stars but they aren't always consistent and I think that depends on how busy they are. read more

I love Nick's. I try to go every weekend and the service has always been good for me. I often go solo so I am seated in less than 10 minutes. The menu is quite extensive but I always go for the weekend benedicts. They are yummy, filling and pretty inexpensive. Free coffee helps too :) read more

I really like this cafe. It's like in the middle of nowhere with a not so pretty view, but the food is good and cheap. I love diners and its food so this was perfect for me. The eggs benedict which is ONLY available in the weekend and only until it runs out is to die for! They have like 6 diff kinds. All the other food is ok like basic diner food. The coffee is also free on weekends, If you go on a weekend then get there early or expect about a 20 min wait. But it's worth it and you can drink the free coffee while you wait. read more

This place exceeded every expectation I ever had for a diner. The service is amazing and THE FOOD!!!!! the famous salsa is the perfect touch to any order.
