Hands down my favorite place to dine. I have never had a bad experience. Food is always excellent, along with the service, and ambiance. As someone that grew up on Kansas City BBQ, I was pleasantly surprised by the baby back rib dinner. One of the very few places in Southern California that I have dined at that does ribs well. Deviled egg app is my favorite. Wife loves and raves about the sea bass here. But, by far, the best thing you can possibly order at Nick's is the butter cake dessert. Put my name in and waited for over an hour and a half for a table. Which is fine. However, when they called my name the hostess said she can hold the table for 10 minutes. We've been there several times and highly recommend Nick's on 2nd. Interesting menu, great food and excellent service. In addition to the inside seating, there are some nice outdoor tables that are screened from the street. We couldn't get a reservation the last time we ate at Nick's but went on the early side for dinner and got a table right away.The restaurant has delicious cake for dessert, which is a very generous portion. I made reservations here last night- surprised because they're always booked up! At first glance- nothing on the menu sounded that amazing to be honest. Our order: Appetizer: Tuna Tartare Entree1: Chilean Sea Bass Entree2: Ribeye sandwich w/ warm potato salad Drinks: Makers and club soda Honestly... Everything was SO amazing! I mean- I guess there's a reason why this restaurant is busy all the time! The quality of the tuna tartare was incredible. We ate every single piece! The only thing I would suggest if getting more wonton chips... they only gave like 5 pieces. The ratio was off on that. The Sea Bass was cooked perfectly! And whatever sauce was on top of the mashed potatoes- so yummy! And lastly- the rib eye sandwich. I couldn't stop talking about it. We got it medium rare and it was soooo tender. I came to Nick's on a Saturday night for drinks & dinner with a girlfriend. We sat outside on the covered patio. We started with cocktails & shared the Cioppino & Rib Eye Grilled Cheese Sandwich. They were nice enough to split the soup into two bowls for us! Unfortunately, we were a bit too full to finish the sandwich. Came here for lunch with the family a couple months ago-- definitely make reservations because they're busy. We waited at the bar for a seat -- took sometime for any of the bartenders to acknowledge us. We got a couple looks but never an "I'll be right with you" or a drink menu. We eventually ordered some mimosas and went to our table outside. For appetizers we got the fried deviled eggs and artichoke special, both of which were good, though not sure I'd feel inclined to order again. For my main- I was in-between a few delicious sounding options, so I asked for the waiters recommendation. I went with the short rib melt and I'm SOOOOO glad I did because I still drool over the flavor of the sandwich-- top 3 ever probably. Crispy cheesy bread, delicious horseradish sauce just perfect, steak that is so tender and juicy, caramelized onions for a touch of sweetness. I couldn't get enough! We also ordered a few of the blackberry cocktails which were delicious with fresh berries. OH! And do yourself a favor and get that butter cake for dessert. INCREDIBLE Our waiter was very polite, and I believe he was training someone who was shadowing him, also very polite. Seemed to be quite a bit of shuffling of staff for their breaks. Originally I gave this place 4 stars because I thought it was great my first visit. For my second visit, it wasn't so great. I decided to call ahead and ask how long the wait was. I was told 10min. Since I was in the area, I decided a 10 min wait was ok and reasonable. Once I got there, I was told it was going to be a 45min wait. So I told the host I just called and was told 10min. Why is it 45 min now?! They told me 6 parties walked in, but I didn't see anyone waiting. I also noticed there were empty tables, but the host said "people are waiting/walking around outside." So after talking to the host for a while, I put my name down anyways because I wanted to eat there. My friend did not want to wait 45 min so we walked outside while on the wait list and found La Creperie. When I was seated at La Creperie, I got a text that said our table was ready. It was only a 15 min wait. Very bad time management here. I loved this place! It's very small inside. I had a reservation for 4, but the small booths in the front were way too small. We ended up switching to a larger table and the hostess was very accommodating. Our server was great. Came back plenty of times to check up on us. My favorite was the strawberry lemonade here! At first, I ordered an Arnold Palmer but I did not like it. It was very watery. Strawberry lemonade is the way to go here. And u get refills on the lemonade only. Appetizer: we got the spinach dip. Very good! Waiter filled our chips a few times. Entree: I got the ribeye melt sandwich. It was delicious! At first i was skeptical about getting broccoli as my side, but our waiter said it was good. I ended up getting it and it was great! Since I came here for a birthday, I was expecting a birthday dessert on the house since I saw so many photos of the cake with a candle on yelp. I hardly ever write yelp reviews but I figured I start with Nicks on 2nd. My wife and I went to Nicks last night for a spontaneous Sunday dinner. We were greeted by two unpleasant hostess who didn't look like they wanted to be at work. Thankfully another host walked up and warmly greeted us and got us seated very fast, I believe her name was Cyndy. She walked us to our table, we chatted a bit, and that was it. A warm interaction and a friendly smile can go a long way! Moments later, we were greeted by our server Andy who was very knowledgeable about the menu and the wine list. We ended up ordering the Cioppino and a Bistro Plate. Both were delicious! We ended the meal with a Warm Butter Cake which was to die for and the perfect end to the night! The only restaurant in Long Beach that has a patio, makes you wait 20min allowing you to have a dog, just to tell you that it has to be tied up outside of the gates right before they sit you down. So you sit their eating their high priced food, and your dog sits outside of the patio. I don't get it. Sometimes your dog gets aggressive toward walking dogs, you are stressed, your dog is stressed. Went here for New Years for lunch around noon with a group of 6. We got the baby back ribs, cioppino, asparagus fries, prime rib sandwich, and fried chicken sandwich. Everything was great- they also have a full bar and a good list of drinks. Parking was easy this time but can get pretty packed since it's mostly street parking or paid lots. Overall, I'd say it's a solid place for classic American dishes and great service. If you save room for dessert- try the warm butter cake! read more

We decided to have a double date here on a Sunday. They do have a very small parking lot reserve but good luck on getting a spot there. We decided to park on the lot across the street. It wasn't too expensive. What we ate: Bacon deviled egg-this was the main reason I wanted to come here. It did not live up to the hype. I would not order this again Buttermilk fried chicken-chicken was delish. I did enjoy the mashed potatoes. Biscuit was alright. Prime rib dip-this sandwich was really good. You need to dip this in the au jus to get the full flavor. Blacked fish sandwich-the fish was cooked perfectly. Super flaky and very tasty. I would eat this again. Service was great! We were seated on the patio with the sun shining on us and they were able to move us asap. They were super friendly. Nice dinner place if you're ever in Long Beach. Came here looking for Brunch, but it was Monday - so it was just LUNCH :) The food was well prepared - roasted pepper soup A+ They are known for the their french dip sandwich, also delicious. Dessert and dessert cocktails really rounded out the meal. The service was great - chipper staff with prompt service though i expected more precision given we were 1 of 3 tables that day (cocktail was delayed, side plates for app were forgotten, etc.). Overall this was a pleasant dining experience and just what we were looking for in the LB area. it was definitely on the pricey side for a lunch; which explains why the other tables were seasoned house wives of Long Beach types ;) That said, again, solid food, service and decor! We sat outside on this beautiful evening, a classy and popular local establishment. We were seemingly not out of place, though, even in our shirts, sandals and caps. I ordered the San Francisco Cioppino, I wanted to order any one of several other menu items. It came with some bread seasoned with herbs and oil, which I used more and more further down the bowl of giant seafood soup. I didn't think it would be, but was a meal in itself. The different shell and sea fish noticeable and fresh, the broth itself perfectly tomatoey, thick and adequately balanced with zesty and spicy notes. I certainly would return and feel happy with the same dish. I did order a cocktail that supposedly had bourbon in it and actually asked our server to return it since I could not detect any alcohol whatsoever. Once the Bona fide version appeared, though, it was tasty indeed, and made for an interested counter to the meal. read more

The wait wasn't bad about 35 min on a Sunday they take your number so it's ok to leave and walk around if you like which we did. We ordered the cheese plate about $25 she went from biscuits to cheese go figure. I love a good cheese plate I only liked the bleu cheese the others tasted a bit musty haa.. the grapes weren't sweet( makes a huge difference) it was just ok nothing special..oh the almonds and honey together were good! Entree time : $22 - I got the fried chicken w sausage gravy, "biscuit" corn and mashed potatos.. it was good I needed salt, pepper and hot sauce only because I'm particular haa. Bff- $22- got the bistro filet with small salad and soup of the day which was tortilla she ate it all said it was delicious. Celebrated a birthday here recently and the ambiance is on point! Reservations are highly recommended especially on a busy weekend. We got the following: + shrimp tequitos: nice flavors and texture. Shrimp was big and juicy. YUM! + asparagus fries: nothing too special tbh + prime rib dip: the menu did say "until we're out" which meant we HAD to order it. I'm not a connoisseur but the meat was tender and juicy. I would definitely order again. + butter cake: other Yelpers are right - you cannot come here without getting this. Live just 10 minutes down the street and have never been here until celebrating Mexican Mothers Day with my boyfriend. We were immediately greeted and seated upon walking in. Carmen was our sever and was super sweet and recommended the perfect dessert that should honestly be illegal. We never order nor do we have room for it but it was the cherry on top of the whole meal to go with espresso martinis. Definitely coming back here more often. I would like to start this review off by saying that I think this restaurant is well worth 5 stars . But, customer service will always seal a deal with me. So, I'll give my pros and cons of this establishment and will explain why I decided that I'll give Nick's 2 stars . Pros: Nicks is modern very open with lot's of natural lighting. you're able to see the cooks creating your orders. Waitress was nice and pleasant wasn't over bearing and knowledgeable about the menu. Now the pros for our orders were nicely plated , I ordered the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and corn on the cob with biscuit and gravy. The gravy was surely what made the meal great. My oldest daughter ordered the petite bistro which I would consider a lunch time special. Included was a petite filet with butter sauce on top of a garlic bread , a house salad, and soup of the day which was a onion soup . She loved her meal . My youngest had the classic cheeseburger, fries . Which she also loved. The fries Were very good. We all ordered desserts I ordered the butter cake it reminded me of Mastro's which is delicious , fudge sundae was good but , too much whip cream, And an old fashioned brownie which was good as well. Might I add their strawberry lemonade is one of the best . The shrimp tequitos are must try . Cons: the chicken breast was very bland tasting and was fried very hard. The waitress never asked if my daughter wanted salad vs baked potato and never asked what type of soup she wanted so she ended up with the onion soup that she didn't like or finish. Now as far as customer service goes the thing that triggered for me to lower this rating is because of the host . I never got his name but his condescending mannerism bothered me. I arrive and check in with my reservation immediately he grabs menus and takes us to our seats as He's taking us to the very back of the restaurant (which is not my favorite place to be seated) so , I ask if we can sit outside since It's nice outside anyways. He proceeds to tell me that there isn't any seats available and we would have to wait longer for outside seating . Since I'm with my kid's I opt to sit in the seats offered. And as he's leaving states sarcastically if you like you can wait awhile for outside seating so, that rubbed me the wrong way. I ignored him and we sat down and shortly our waitress arrives. So, again this isn't the tipping point for me. After being there for some time our order is arriving. Shortly , afterwards I notice that an African American family is being led by same hostess to be seated next to us . Interestingly I checked and saw plenty of other seats available that he could have sat the party of 3 the hostess began to explain the reason why he didn't seat them at a closer table is because of a reservation the family was only there for dessert so where they sat at wasn't a concern of theirs. But , me being a African American and we're the only black people in the whole establishment being sat in the back bothered me a lot. But, the icing on the cake is after seating the family I notice the hostess he goes to the waiter station near the bar whispers to the waitress with a sly smile and head gestures to the black family next to me and whispers to my waitress the same thing and does the head gesture again . Not realizing I'm watching the whole entire time . He goes to another employee talks to them while gesturing at us both and laughs until he finally noticed I was watching. He tries to play it off as a simple conversation but , it wasn't he was mocking and purposely chose to seat us in the back of the restaurant and found it funny as well. This was the icing on the cake for me and since I know much won't be done to the guy but this rating will hopefully, have their employees trained on how to deal with all customers the same. read more

My cousin suggested going to this place while I was in Long Beach. Parking is really bad luckily I found a meter spot right in front of the restaurant. You can park in the neighborhoods and walk right over. I came here around 4:00pm and it was pretty dead. My brother and I got seated right away and put in our orders. We shared the bacon deviled eggs ($8). It came with a set of 4. I thought these were good but nothing too amazing. We also shared the Crispy Chicken Sandwich ($16). It consisted of a buttermilk fried chicken, havarti cheese, sweet slaw, almonds, tomato, arugula, honey mustard, herb mayonnaise on a brioche bun. My cousin claimed it was super amazing but I thought it was just okay. My brother's opinion was the same as mine. After we finished our meal, we kind of felt sick to our stomach. Also, I like to enjoy my meal in peace. Our waitress kept coming over about every 5 minutes and asked how we were doing. I did not think that was necessary because I always had food in my mouth. I get that its about customer service but if I need something, I can flag someone down. The bill, including the beer, came out to almost $40, which is pretty pricey. My husband and I had come by for breakfast, and then realized that Nick's no longer serves breakfast. We went ahead and stayed for lunch. We were pleasantly surprised with delicious sandwiches that were packed with flavor. I had a prime-roast dip sandwich that melts in your mouth with flavor. Even the cole-slaw side was outstanding. My husband ordered the chicken sliders, and he can't stop talking about how delicious they were. We are definitely going back to try other items on their menu. I have had it with the place! I took my in-laws here and the waitress had such an attitude because my father in law wanted a Budweiser. She goes "oh we don't serve that here" and laughed because she believed it was a cheap beer... THEY SERVE BUD LIGHT, so you would naturally assume they have Budweiser. This most recent incident was the receptionist! I had a reservation at the beginning of the month, when we walked up to give our names the man condescendingly asks if we had a reservation. We waited for 30 mins past our reservation time and still weren't seated. We asked to sit at the bar and wait for our reservation. They refused to let us sit there. Even they had just let another group sit there to wait. I will never go back to be disrespected by a waitress and a receptionist, ever again. read more
