I've been struggling to find an authentic Chinese street food place and so stumbling upon this place was like striking gold!!! First off--parking. We came ~dinner time and so I expected severely limited parking (since this restaurant is located near the heart of Berkeley) seeing as to how this restaurant doesn't have a parking lot but it was surprisingly easy to find street parking! Immediately upon entrance we were greeted by the waiter (very friendly, was able to give recommendations as to what was popular along with their personal favorites and why they liked it) and was sat down. We came at around 5:30-5:45pm on a Friday night and there was only one group in the restaurant at the same time--it didn't start getting busy until around 6:30pm. There are QR codes on each table which allows one to order (and pay) through one's device which is great for minimizing face to face interaction during this ongoing pandemic. We ordered the Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup (ramen wheat noodle with cubed beef shank, baby bok choy, pickled mustard, and scallion), the Guilin Beef Tendon Stew (rice noodle with beef shank and tendon, peanut, pickled string bean, garlic, scallion, and cilantro), and the Spicy Potato Salad (shredded potato in Sichuan chili sauce). Had a nice quick lunch here today. Interior is clean and staff was friendly. I ordered the grilled flank steak beef. Food come out quick and tasted good. Good portion size and affordable. Ordered the guilin noodles and was reminded of authentic Chinese experiences I had. Atmosphere was soothing and inviting because of the owner's smooth jazz playlist. He was turning away customers to preserve better customer service but PPL WANT THE FOOD! We got Canton seafood soup bowl, lamb soup bowl and Hong Kong BBQ noodle soup bowls. They were raving favorites from our Chinese mom. The Canton seafood noodle stirfry was fresh with a balance of ramen, shrimp, calamari, and snow peas. All came in large steaming bowls. We love that they do not use MSG! I ordered the Spring Rolls and the Shanghai Scallion. Both were delicious! The rolls were crunchy but not too hard, and the scallion was amazing and is a great portion. The scallion's tofu was done just right and tasted great mixed in with all the vegetables. They include soy sauce on the side, but I didn't feel the need to use it with how tasty food already was. The staff is nice and friendly, greeted me right away when entering, got my order accurately and got my check quickly when I finished eating. As for the space, the restaurant is pretty big and has plenty of seating, both large tables for groups and bar seating at bar and windows. The bar had a TV showing the Olympics, so Noodles Fresh might be a good spot to catch sports, if that's what you're looking for (but there's only one TV). It's great that this part Shattuck has a great Chinese spot now. Now I don't have to go all the way to the other side of Downtown when I want some good Chinese food. They have very limited dining seating but it's just right. They serve you in disposable plates ama gear but the quality of the food is just as good. The menu offers a greatest hits of noodle dishes and some rice dishes from all around China -- Beijing, Shanghai, Sichuan, Xinjiang, Yunnan, Shandong, Guilin, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Taiwan -- you name it, they got it. You probably wouldn't come across a restaurant like this in most parts of Asia. People there would assume that no single establishment could possibly make all these dishes well. It's like a Japanese restaurant that offers ramen, udon, sonen, tsukemen, soba, etc. all in one place. Or an Italian establishment featuring pasta from Tuscany, Sicily, Sardinia, Lombardy, Liguria, Calabria, etc. In my view, that's a recipe for mediocrity. And that's what you get at Noodles Fresh. I ordered the Xinjiang Lamb Bowl. Normally this dish is pungent with cumin, chili, peppercorns, cilantro, ginger, garlic and other spices. The Noodles Fresh version was watered down. The cubes of lamb weren't marinated for long, if at all. When I bit into them, there was very little flavor. My friend ordered the Sichuan Chili Fish bowl. This dish should've been fiery hot, and it's color should've been a vibrant red. Instead the flavor had little character, and its color was a subdued brownish red. We also ordered a plate of pot stickers. Again, the pork filling was bland, and the skin was more cardboardy than crispy. On the other hand, they did serve it with just a small dish of Zhenjiang vinegar, as they do in China, rather than the salty soy sauce concoctions normally found in American Chinese restaurants. I asked the waitress where the main chef was from, and she said Guangdong, in Southern China. I'm guessing the chef may be better at making the milder southern dishes on the menu, like Hainan Chicken Rice, Canton Seafood Bowl, etc. In short: the food wasn't inauthentic, it wasn't bad, just very average. read more

The menu is pretty eclectic, as it features dishes inspired by a wide variety of regional Chinese food (everywhere from Jiangxi to Hainan to Sichuan). They recently had a story written up about them in Berkeleyside, so I decided to give this location a try. I had tried the original El Cerrito location before and just thought the food was okay. This time, I think I ordered the right things. I got the: - GUILIN BEEF TENDON STEW 桂林鹵水米粉: Loved this. The rice noodles were slippery. The dressing was savory and tart. Loved the crunch of the peanuts and the sour and saltiness of the pickled green beans. A must order and would come here again, especially since there aren't that many places in the Bay Area that offer this. - SICHUAN CHILI FISH 川味米粉: A lot of people seem to order this so we also got this. I thought the soup was way too salty, especially since Sichuanese Pixian-style bean paste can tend to be very salty. We couldn't drink the broth. - COMPLIMENTARY FRIED PEANUTS: This came free with our order, which was really sweet. They were addicting, loved the crunch. - Interior is SO classy and beautiful. Wow. Can't wait until indoor dining opens again because this is a great Friday date night spot. The decor features a lot of porcelain and ceramics from Jingdezhen, a city in China known for its ceramics. - Service was excellent. The woman at the front was really nice on the phone and in person. - They're QUICK. Ready in 10 minutes after I called. - It took a while for our call to go through because we called on a Sunday evening and they were busy. We've heard so many good things about this noodle place and it was delicious!! For a to go place with noodle soup, they are super thoughtful in how they package everything to make sure the noodles don't get mushy. The salt & pepper wings were seasoned perfectly but I wish they were a bit crispier (which may just be because they get softer boxed up during the transport). The Sichuan chili fish had the best flavor -- I honestly just loved smelling it throughout the whole dinner. I think it could've been much spicier though given that it was based on Sichuan fish. This place had amazing service, the staff were so kind and even offered a complimentary moon cake at the end of the meal. For the food I ordered the Hunan Hot & Sour, and requested that they don't put pork in in, and the staff were very accommodating. You're able to remove the meat from a lot of the dishes and substitute the meat broths for vegetarian broths, which makes it very vegetarian friendly. I'd definitely love to dine in once it's safe to do so. My order was ready on time and very thoughtfully packaged so the soup wouldn't spill.
