Wow, what a pleasant surprise. No wait on Sunday morning (Father's Day) at around 10:00. Compared to 1h20m at the place we tried first. This has a great little diner atmosphere. Decor allowed me and hub to explain the whole S&H Green Stamps thing to our 23 year old son. Biscuit was more like a roll to me compared to my biscuits, but it was good. Bacon was ample, not the thin kind that leaves you wondering "why bother". Hub had burger and tater tots. Said the tots were the best. Food came quickly. We stopped here on Veterans Day for breakfast and a number of things make this place 5 stars. The people and atmosphere: just nice friendly people who are happy, like what they do and are conversational. And then they were giving away free breakfast to Veterans all day. That right there is what the country needs more of. AMAZING job there Norma's. And then the food: it was one of the best breakfasts I've had at a diner. And I love some diner food. The hash browns were crispy, the chicken fried steak was cooked just right and the crazy was plentiful. Even has some on the side. The only thing I wish was my eggs to be a little runnier but that's ok. It was absolutely delicious. My wife ordered the steak fritas was tater tots and she raved about it. All in all this is an amazing diner that pumps out some delicious food, fair prices, and even better people and management. All in all a great experience. Even the booths had Texas flags on them. Cute from the inside- diner look and feel. For a Saturday morning, we didn't have to wait more than 5 minutes for a booth! I got the Veggie omelet, it was very watery and soft. The coffee didn't taste like anything but hot water. Inside nice but food was not good. read more

Went here for a late lunch and man were we dissatisfied. My daughter ordered the seafood platter that included fish, shrimp, hush puppies no fish was on her platter and they had to make it, I ordered a small house salad I guess they didn't have to tomatoes or cucumbers because I got zero. Food was Luke warm at best. My son ordered corn dogs, the first batch was burnt, the second batch was frozen in the middle by the time the third batch came we were over this place. Usually don't do reviews, but in my brief, five minute encounter at Norma's Café, I would say the manager was very very nice and left an impression on me and that is how you are supposed to manage a company offered me a complementary drink from me waiting and make sure that my order was done and change was back to me. Woke up wanting biscuits and sausage gravy. We tried this place out for late breakfast/early lunch. The biscuits were hot and fluffy along with a generous portion of gravy. He got the chicken and cornbread dressing with glazed carrots, pinto beans, and mac n cheese. The chicken and cornbread dressing were cooked to perfection. The mac and cheese was seasoned perfectly with a slight sweetness. The rolls and cornbread were nice and fresh out of the oven. We were very happy and full! read more

Food (3.5/5) Norma's Cafe appreciates pie, so when National Pie Day comes around (January 22nd), you bet Norma's is serving up a free slice of pie. Enticed by this offer, my friends and I couldn't resist, but there were clear winners from that night. The YUMMMS: - Complimentary bread rolls: These are so BOMB. Perfectly buttery, soft, and a tiny hint of sweetness. I didn't even use any of the provided butter because it was perfect on its own! - Chicken fried chicken: I love all derivatives of fried chicken, so chicken fried chicken is no exception. At Norma's, it's perfectly tender and you get a hearty portion of chicken. You could ask for gravy on the side, but why would you? The gravy makes it!! The Ehh: - All of my sides: If you get the CFC, you get like three sides. I had the soup, mashed potatoes, and fried okra. All were just okay. Nothing amazing and out of this world. For me, I would say the sides are slightly reminiscent of my middle school cafeteria sides. I even tried my boyfriend's mac and cheese, which also wasn't super impressive since most of the cheese had solidified and it was macaroni covered in chunks of hardened cheese (no more gooey-ness, nooooooo!!) - The pie: Ahhhhh I'm sorry!! I really wanted to like the pie because heck, that's why I even came into Norma's, but nearly 80% of the pie's height was whipped cream and not actual pie :( I'm not super into whipped cream, so this is just my personal preference. Additionally, the crust was nothing special - only slightly harder than I was expecting. Service (4/5) Our waitress was so sweet. She had our backs and even placed our pie orders in early because she wanted to make sure we got pie before it was completely sold out! Truly exceptional service. Atmosphere (3.5/5) Norma's SCREAMS "diner" all over itself. It's got a very homey and down to earth vibe. A lot of the seating options are booths, which limits party sizes to 4 (or 5 if you really squeeze in). There are a few tables in the back if you have a larger party. What I felt could be better was a way to control the "waiting area." It was so crowded near the front since there wasn't much room, so it was a bit uncomfortable. Bottom Line Decent diner experience in Dallas, but I wouldn't say that I would crave this and want to come here out of my own volition for good southern food. Today I wanted, no-- needed pancakes. I had been quite narcoleptic all day. Wake up, intend to get up and be productive.. and fall right back asleep. Repeat about 3-4 times. So I was useless. Finally, at 2.30 in the afternoon, I made myself wake up for good. And I wasn't the only one wanting pancakes. Friend R wanted pancakes-- I didn't want Denny's (their pancakes are weird) and friend K is opposed to IHOP for some unknown reason. The Boyfriend has been to this Norma's a handful of times for breakfast with a friend, but I hadn't. Even though I've lived in Dallas my whole life, I don't remember ever having been to a Norma's. I know, I know. It's been around since like the 1940's- where have I been? Well, I'm a convert now. R now has a new place on her approved-food list (which is now a grand total of about 6 places), and we have a new place to add to the rotation. As expected, I got pancakes. Holy crap. I got the regular stack (3 pancakes) with some bacon and eggs, because that seemed reasonable. DON'T DO IT. It's so much food. Get the short stack or share with like 2 other people... The pancakes are huge: huge in circumference and fluffiness. Seriously, these are some of the fluffiest pancakes I've ever had. The bacon was the right balance between crispy and chewy. The eggs weren't spectacular, but they were just scrambled eggs. R decided not to get a pancake after all, and got the grilled cheese. She approved of the sandwich AND the housemade chips. She ate way more of the chips than she had intended, and relished in drinking her first Dr Pepper since having her galbladder removed earlier this week. K had originally decided on Migas, but changed her mind to the chilaquiles at the last minute, and she was super happy with her decision. She basically licked the plate, after dding some salsa to the eggs. Service was great: she checked on us plenty, made sure our glasses were never empty, but didn't hover annoyingly. There was a slight confusion when I first sat as 3 different servers were checking on me and seeing if I needed anything. Oh, and the pies. Sweet jesus the pies looked AMAZING. We were all three too stuffed (or too post-galbladder removal) to properly enjoy the pie, but K and I vowed to go back and order Onion Rings and Pie. And probably nothing else. (We spied the onion rings at a nearby table and they looked phenomenal and home made). Norma's, you're good people. Before I start, I just would like to make one statement that will sum up my thoughts on Norma's Cafe: I would rather go hungry. Tonight I got My brother and his friend and told them that I was taking them to eat at this restaurant I had recently heard was "really good." The drive there was great, we were all laughing and having a great conversation. Little did we know that this would be the last time we would laugh for a while. We walked in and we were all satisfied with the atmosphere. Shortly after sitting down, our very nervous waiter approached us with menus. After skimming over it, my brother asked him what his favorite thing on the menu is. He paused, checked his surroundings, leaned in, and whispered"I don't know, maybe the grilled chicken?" Looking back at it with the knowledge I have now, we should've got up and left as soon as we heard this. We were now a little unsure on what to order because we heard they had great breakfast. If the first sign was not clear enough that we should of left, the second definitely was. After every item we ordered, the waiter grimiest in pain. You should've seen the look on his face when Big Mike ordered a side of glazed carrots. If the look wasn't enough the waiter asked him, "are you sure?" We didn't know what this meant until we tasted our food. As soon as we tasted what we had ordered, we realized that this wasn't going to be fun. I literally witnessed Big Mike trying to plug his nose while crying out "oh doctor" before taking his carrots down the hatch. After trying to shovel are food down, thank God it was time for the dessert. The pie that was supposed to be outstanding was nothing above average, and has left Big Mike gasping for air for the past hour. This review is strictly based on the food here as I ordered to my home through a third party service . This particular day , I was craving southern food that I shouldn't have wanted . I have my slip ups every now and then . I ordered the chicken fried steak meal with not one , not two, but THREE sides . I mean how often is that offered ? I feel really guilty in this moment -LOL! So, the food is seriously what the doctor ordered . The steak was succulent with the perfect amount of crisp on the outside and tender on the inside . Came here early Saturday afternoon for brunch. However, the overall feeling I got was an IHOP or Waffle House but rebranded. I got French toast with sausage, both of which were mediocre at best. French toast was on the dry side, and the sausage reminded me of what was in my middle school cafeteria lunch.. not good. The customer service was fantastic. Wish the food was up to par. Oh how I loved Norma's! This cute little diner has fantastic food and very good service. The booth we sat in had a Texas flag on the seat and of course we here in Texas love that. The atmosphere isn't too loud and great for all ages! When you sit you're greeted with rolls and cornbread. Being a cornbread lover that's exactly what I went to, I'm sure the roll was good too.., but the cornbread was awesome! I ordered the CFC which was the perfect size. Usually they're they size of the plate but this was about (woman) hand sized. It came with 3 sides so I got mashed potatoes, green beans and Mac. It was soo delicious! I had lunch here with some friends after seeing the place from the tollway for a long time. The Yelp reviews looked good, and home cooking sounded good, so off we went. The place definitely has a retro diner feel to it, and the waitresses are playing the part well. Ours helpfully explained the reason that the PB&J sandwich costs over $20 ("they bring special peanuts in by helicopter, lands right in the parking lot"). OK, well, really it was a printing error back when, but they perpetuate it as a little joke. Rolls and cornbread came before the meal, the former fairly yeasty, warm and yummy, and the latter were muffin style, a little sweet (not generally a plus for me) and crumbly, but very good with some "buttery spread" on them. For my meal, I chose the meat loaf with squash, turnip greens and carrots. The meat loaf as pretty good size, dense but not tough, and had a nice tomato sauce with big chunks of tomatoes and good flavor, but not all sweet and "ketchupy". The vegetable portions were sizable, and had great flavor (compare this to the bland, tasteless stuff they crank out at some of the home cooking chains these days, you know who I'm talking about). That part alone was a huge plus for me, because I actually like vegetables, and want them to complement my meal, not just take up space next to the meat. Finally, as I was paying out at the register, I grabbed a piece of buttermilk pie for the road; it turned out to be a little too sweet for my taste and was lacking a bit in "tang", so I ditched it for some froyo from a place down the street. I thought this place was owned by the same "Norma's" on Beltline. Not the case. For our usual Sunday after gym brunch, we decided to try them out. I'm glad we did. As with most good places, Sunday mornings are packed. But even with the hustle and bustle, our party of 5, was seated (by the very nice) hostess within no time (10 mins). She is awesome! If you see her, tell her I said hi! (She has star tattoos on her neck) The place has a lot of "Only in Texas" memorabilia. There's a nice diner style counter and plenty of tables and booths to accommodate any size party. The coffee here is pretty good (I had 3 cups) and the selection of items on the menu will please any palette. It's mostly home-style (like what your grandma or someone's g-ma), made from scratch...without being over-priced. This is the place you can take anyone to and they all will be pleased. Granted, one order was incorrectly made, but they did what they were supposed to do and made it right. We all are human. If you have a sweet-tooth, stay away from the counter by the register!! There's pies/cakes/cobbler galore!! NOM NOM NOM! There's not that one thing I'd suggest you try...it's all good. If you like International Pancake House & Dream Cafe, this will be another place you can add to that list. read more

It was too hot to get back in the car and drive there again for the items left out of our order. We spent a lot of money and included a tip. Not happy with Norma's right now. read more

Although Norma's seeks to provide those "warm and fuzzy" sentiments which you expressed, Friday night's experience surely did not mirror your sentiments in the way in which we got treated and clearly ignored by all the servers walking by our table. The Norma's restaurant staff needs to get retrained in how to best serve ALL its patrons and taught how to walk in someone else's shoes. This place was really nice. Our waitress was Adele. She was really sweet. The food was okay but really nothing to write home about. My daughter and I had the Breakfast #1 special with ribeye steak. We didn't like it too much but the cinnamon roll was really really good. The steak was not the kind of steak I buy and cook. Something about it was not right. I think the eggs were maybe powered eggs...not sure. I'll go back to try something different but no time soon. read more

This is my third time coming here and receiving this issue. My waitress this time was Lori, horrible. She was acting pretty spaced out, like she was there physically but not mentally.... I ordered fish and my food sat there for seven minutes before she realized it was her order. She walked by the food station 3x. I spoke to the manager JULIANwhom was awesome however after our conversation Lori didn't move on professionally she came back by my table once to drop off a coke and kept walking. I had to ask a nice order man with glasses to get me more gravy! I also watch another waitress decide not to take a table their order all because IT wasn't her table! It's unfortunate that this 1-3pm team doesn't like to be team player. First time visiting Norma's and I will definitely be back. I ordered a double cheeseburger with tots. The prices are low and the portions are large. Cool TX/Diner decor. The service was really quick too. Complimentary rolls are really good. I wanted to try their pie but $4.50 for a small slice is a bit steep. The atmosphere of the diner is really cute! I like their supersized decoration like the huge pancake. Their food is... OK. But maybe it was because my friends and I ordered the breakfast foods and not the other lunch foods like the burgers and fried catfish. I ordered a veggie omelette and it was just really mediocre. The texture was really dry, not soft and savory. My friends ordered the French toast which was a little burnt looking... and the waffles were fluffy but not good but I guess that's why there's syrup. But, their chicken fried steak is really good. The outside is crispy and the gravy together gives it a nice texture. It's pretty filling as well since it has 3 sides. Went twice in the past four months. Bad experience the first time and thought it might have been an off night. Decided to give it another try. Tonight was just as disappointing. Poor service, food order was wrong and we only learned about after 7pm half-price pies because we overhead another server telling her table about it. Atmosphere is very casual and nostalgic. All the wait staff and manager are very friendly. At the dinner rush the food was delivered quickly and very hot. All of the food was very tasty and season accordingly. I thought the chicken tetrazzini was too cheesy for me but that was just my preference. The lima beans looked like butter beans to me but that is the debate for another day. They were delicious. The boiled Cabbage was slightly seasoned. I would have preferred to taste more bacon grease. The cornbread muffins are made with white cornmeal. Very tasty, not too salty, perfectly cooked. Overall impression: Excellent! I would recommend Norm's Cafe to anybody interested in eating out. Mom and I came here for breakfast/lunch the day after Christmas. She loves homestyle cooking and this place nailed it. I got the Texas Trainers' Scramble. It was very tasty, full of veggies, and the perfect amount of food. My mom got the Chicken & Dressing with black eyed peas, green beans, and macaroni and cheese. She puts salt on almost everything and didn't feel any of her meal needed it. She said she can't wait to bring her husband back to try it out. I really like Norma's, the one thing you can count on is consistency. Quality breakfast, cooked right every time. The menu is nothing to write home about. Its the most basic of breakfast items. Nothing too fancy. But what the do, they do well time and time again. Overall service has never been fantastic. The waitresses are old school, no-nonsense. They are not an over friendly bunch in general, but not rude either. Just heads down, get 'er done mentality. They are fast, responsive, and get the order right. The atmosphere is not fancy, but clean. Has a 70's throwback feel. Then there's the pies. The great pies like grandma use to make. Grab a slice or grab an entire pie to go! Very Disappointed. I have eaten at Truck-Stops with tastier food. Maybe I came at a bad time? Sunday at 3 after everyone is just wiped out from the post Sunday church crowd? Hard to say. The sign said Seat Yourself so I grabbed a booth by the kitchen. Sat there for quite a few minutes before being asked what I would like to drink. I ordered an appetizer along with an entrée and all were delivered to me at the exact same time. Irritating. ...Except silverware which I had to specifically ask for. The fried pickles were cut very thin and fried so long that the pickles were not juicy or tasteful. It was mostly batter. I only ate four or five of them before giving up. The fried catfish I ordered was marginal. It was not a very tick fillet. So again, more fried batter kept in the fryer over-long. The worst thing to me was that what I thought was tartar sauce was actually mayonnaise with pickle relish mixed in. It wasn't tartar sauce at all. Yuck! Norma need not worry, I won't be coming back again. Overall Service: 2 stars. I felt invisible as wallpaper. One drink refill and the check was left as soon as possible. There were no refills after the check was left. It was some kind of waitressy hint to gtfo. Food: 2 stars. Everything except the broccoli was fried and overlooked. Cleanliness: 2 stars. Yikes. This diner is absolutely delicious and lives up the standards of a diner! The diner is pretty big and very well decorated. When I first go there, someone immediately directed me to sit anywhere I wanted. I had the chicken fried steak and it was delicious. The white gravy was perfectly seasoned and not watered down like most places. Along with my chicken fried steak, I had mashed potatoes with white gravy, corn, and mac and cheese. Everything was delicious, flavorful and cooked well. I was also served cornbread and rolls prior to my main meal, and that was delicious and warm. I was so full that I couldn't try any dessert, but next time I come, I'll make sure to leave room for some pie. There's a variety of pies to choose from and man do they look delicious!
