This is my go to spot for lunch and rainy days for dinner. The food is fresh and seasoned to perfection. My favorite is the cornbread muffins and their dinner rolls with plenty of butter. We arrived at around 4:50 PM on July 10, 2021. It wasn't too busy and we were seated right away. Our waitress, Linda was very nice and got our drink orders quickly. She gave us 2 minutes to decide what we wanted and took or orders promptly. We ordered fried pickles and onion rings as appetizers. They arrived quickly and were very tasty. Not long after our main course was brought to us. I ordered the Honey Mustard Chicken Sandwich. Also ordered was the Mac and Cheese burger. And lastly, the Pot Roast was ordered. Everything was hot and fresh. As we were enjoying our meal, Linda made sure we had all we needed and refilled our drinks and was super nice and friendly. You have to try this place at least once. I ordered the meatloaf, mac n cheese, green beans and mash potatoes--so good! The fact that you get to choose 3 sides is crazy!! My only regret is not asking them to cook the meat well-done, as there was a lot on pink left and I lost my appetite because of the pink meat. My friend ordered chicken and dressing, green beans, lima beans and cheese broccoli. She loved it. Our waiter, Kassidy, was an all-star. She was extremely attentive to our table. Went here for brunch with a friend. I ordered the ham and cheese omelette The food was good especially the grits. They were in a small bowl which was just enough grits for me. The plate came with the omelette, toast, grits. The service was okay. I don't feel like anyone was excited to have us there. We had to move sections because that was a couple of flies that wouldn't stop bugging us. I guess they didn't communicate the "move" to one another because I happened to look up and see the woman who was working our new section throwing her hands in the air like "what the heck, what's this about". We stopped here for breakfast on Mother's Day as tourists. The positives for Norma's is that we came at 9 am and we were seated immediately. The waitress greeted us quickly and got our drink orders and then our breakfast order. The cons are the table we sat at was dirty. There were crumbs from the previous customers all over the seat and some on the table. The eggs tasted nasty and not fresh, almost like a huge batch is made and then they serve them as they're ordered. The chicken fried chicken batter fell right off of the chicken. So my husband and I just had dinner. We love coming here, because it reminds us of the dinner in our old town. Very homey, clean, busy, and good food! Fish was our server, he was amazing!!! He was really great at recommending new things for us to try. The fried pickles were nice and crispy, not overly greasy, good seasoning. Gravy on tots is now my new favorite! Also the pie we had tonight helped raise funds to help children have birthday parties. Overall we had a great night! Will definitely be coming back! We had a great casual dinner here. We had Cody as our server and he was so kind and attentive. He makes you feel at home and makes sure you have everything you need anymore. If you're looking for a southern flair, stop in here ! I've had two experiences with them . I ordered through a third party delivery service, and pickup. Both times I've ordered the turnip greens, pinto beans, fried okra, and peach cobbler . But first , let me just give you a taste of the atmosphere. It's an open diner style . It looks somewhat retro , with lots of pops of red . Now on to the food . So, having grown up in the south , I would like to think I know good southern food . There is a definite difference between Soul food and Southern Food. They are just not the same . I think Southern Food takes on the style of the entire south , meaning you will see the same style of food offered , whereas soul food will probably be a smaller market of that as well as different preparation. With that being said, Norma's falls on the southern end of the spectrum . And that's ok . The pinto beans were good and flavorful . The turnip greens could have used more seasonings. I'm not sure why restaurants skip this very crucial step ! Don't be scared of the seasonings! The okra was fried to perfection . The cobbler was good, but I'm naturally bias because my aunt makes the best peach cobbler on earth . LOL! Their cobbler seemed to have a somewhat generic base for the base liquid or sauce . You know how when you make strawberry shortcake and some people use that strawberry glaze that is in most stores ready made and some actually let the strawberries soak in sugar for the perfect love sauce ? Okay, I grew up with amazing deserts as a kid ,all from scratch, but I will stop talking about it now . It just didn't taste natural , but it hit the spot . So, I feel like I might get shanked for this review, but I'm writing it anyway. I'd heard people raving about Norma's since I started working at my current job. Everyone loves it - I am just not one of them. I finally relented to my coworker's nagging and decided to use a cheat meal at this place because I knew it was supposed to be home cooked deliciousness and that they were famous for their pies. Here's the rundown: I got the chicken fried steak w/ mashed potatoes, turnip greens, and corn. The chicken fried steak was a scrawny piece of overcooked meat that was extremely tough to cut, the turnip greens were totally flavorless (how do you ruin bacon?), and the potatoes were flavorless too. It tasted like home cooking day at a nursing home where everyone is watching their sodium intake and cholesterol. With about 1/2 my meal eaten I agree to try their pie, and it just wasn't worth the calories to me. The apple pie seemed like the filling came from a can. Thick, dense, syrup instead of the homemade stuff, and the apples were still hard (again, how?). The crust was delicious, but that's not the point of a pie, is it? At the end of the meal I was surprised by how expensive it was for completely "meh" food, and all I can say is that the rest of the fans won't have to worry about me being in their way for a table. If you're thinking about ordering pancakes... I would say that a regular stack could possibly feed a family of four. Norma's pancakes are absolutely huge! BF and I felt too ambitious and we ordered a stack ( 3 pancakes). Let's say we didn't even finish a quarter of it. If anything a short stack would have been fine... but still cutting it close. Breakfast during the weekend can sure get crowded. We came in right around lunch and only had to wait about 10 minutes. They serve breakfast all day so need to wake up early. Besides the pancakes we ordered a Norma's Cafe special with sunny side up eggs, toast, hash browns, and sausage. It's the the typical diner food... a bit greasy but it has the homemade taste. Yelp told me that Norma's Cafe was just around the corner. I said, "Otay!" The last couple of times I've eaten breakfast out (Egg and I, etc.) and I've asked for over easy eggs, I've received medium. Favorite North Dallas diner for our family! First time we went my wife and I were floored at the service and how family friendly the staff and managers are. We asked for a burger to be split for our two kids and they went through the hassle of cutting it and placing it on 2 plates for us and even included a good portion of fries for each child!! Then when we asked about our baby and how their carrots were cooked. The manager said she would bring out plain steamed carrots for us. When she did they were already pre cut into tiny little baby bite sized pieces!! Probably the best restaurant family service I have ever had anywhere and I have probably gone through more restaurants than the average dude! The apple pie was amazing, by the way. My first time here I went with a friend who recommended it. The service was abysmal! We had to ask for for the same things multiple times. Simple things like honey and a side of gravy. I was not thrilled to see that they charged me separate for gravy when I ordered chicken fried steak and asked for the gravy on the side which of course was not on the side put poured all over the plate including the eggs. It didn't help that the gravy was cold and made the biscuit cold. All in all it was a terrible experience and I will never be back. read more

So I've been here several times. To be honest I'm not entirely sure what the fuss is all about. Ambience is what sells me on this place; great environment, love the decor, and that diner feel. That said, the food for me is very "meh". Pancakes, while massive. have very little flavor or texture until you drown it in butter and syrup. Norma's is a company to spend your money at because they give back and give you more than the quality you pay for - which is unusual these days. I went to the one in Frisco and I had their Swiss Mushroom Burger for lunch and it was the juiciest, most tender burger I've had. The mushrooms weren't overpowering - there was just the right amount for flavor. The fries were fantastic, as were the tater tots. They have pie by the slice and if you've never tasted heaven on a plate well go to Norma's and have pie. I've been looking for a good pie diner since I moved back to the DFW area and FINALLY I have Norma's!
