He barbecues his meat and chicken right there outside in a big open smoke cooker. We had one chicken and one beef tri tip special. You get two sides and a salad and some hawaiian bread and for 15.00 !!! No post covid prices or portions here. Inside they have their counter wind up with their homemade barbecue sauces that you help yourself to. The gentleman running the barbecue came and checked on us. , broadcast are food out by some wonderful fragrant wisteria. Some of the sides are broccoli sla moms beans, chili beans, potato salad. Stopped in for lunch at my husband's suggestion since I had only ever tried North Fork's bottled sauces. The owners were very welcoming and helpful. Trevor suggested their version of chili mac for my daughter - she loved it, and happily ate the leftovers for dinner. My son and husband had tri-tip. I recommend the chicken sandwich if you aren't feeling like the usual bbq suspects - it comes with a slightly spicy, tangy white sauce. My husband and I were heading to another place to eat and saw this place. We are glad we stopped to eat here. The food is amazing and it is all done "Santa Maria Style". The owner has roots in Pismo Beach area. He is Veteran friendly. He is very nice and easy to talk with. There is a Military wall; he stated that it started with his picture and people just kept adding to his wall. Sorry never talked about our food. All the meals come with chili beans, rice pilaf, coleslaw pickles , onion and bread. I had just the Tri Tip. My husband had the Tri Tip & Chicken with "Bam Sauce" on the side. The Bam Sauce is really good. He also gave us some Jalapeño Cheddar Sausage that he makes. Wow, it was amazing. I would highly recommend North Fork American BBQ. My sister and I have been going to this restaurant for quite a while. We usually frequented this location 3-4 times a month since they came to Northfork from their Oakhurst location. We also liked the fact that they are VET owned. Our FAVORITE menu item WAS the Carolina Pig. Soooooo....... disappointed to find out that while they were boasting about all the new additions to their menu, they NEVER mentioned the deletion of this WONDERFUL "signature sandwich". In fact, there is a quote from the restaurant themselves in a previous post where they talk about the Carolina Pig being extremely popular. So, what? You get rid of it!!?? Then we were told that they can no longer give us ice, as they were informed that the water has Arsenic in it. Nor could they give us cups any longer. Came in here after a track run, haven't tried this place before and thought why not. The tri-tip had a nice blackening (crust) to it, very homestyle and candid atmosphere. Alongside the meat there was really good beans/chili which has a rich tomatoey base which is nice to have alongside the chunks of tri-tip within. The potato salad was superior than others I've tried--hard to find a good potato salad these days. The Cole slaw stood out with its unique poppyseed dressing which makes a very flavorful slaw. Rice pilaf was pretty good, I would have preferred a more southwest/Santa Fe twist though akin to a Spanish rice. The sauces were good; Carolina Gold (my favorite) and a Smokey Sierra BBQ... One recommendation is for the BBQ sauce to be warmed upon serving dish as it brings out more flavor from the sauce and makes it taste even better (never serve cold bbq sauce). It was a nice quiet winter evening, the woman was nice and approachable and the young man was professional. I really like the quaint atmosphere and homestyle bbq vibe, as a new place I hope to see a more 'goldfields' kind of mining vibe which this town desperately needs. So I (Crazy Bernie) rolled up on my bright red iron horse and 2 friends because this joint was featured on channel 30 ABC Freznooo. I got the tri tip sand which was piled high with perfectly cooked meat. Devoured it within minutes. My buddy Carl had to get a chicken salad thanks to the threat of a bout of gout. Ouchhhh. He said the salad was awesome! The other guy named Steve I'm pretty sure is a serial killer but he got the tri tip like me. All in all everything was excellent. The food at this place is amazing and it is now being cooked by the third generation. My wife had the pulled pork Carolina pig sandwich which is slow cooked for 17 hours, topped with the recommended slaw. I had Trev's Tri tip sandwich on a garlic butter roll and had their signature barbecue sauce on half and salsa on the other side half. I would do it that way again. First, the good: The staff and ownership are REALLY nice people. The restaurant is clean. Access is easy, and there is plenty of parking. The owner is so nice, in fact, that I almost didn't write this, and almost didn't post it. If you are reading this now, it's simply because I decided that truth and quality food must have a higher value than protecting someone's feelings. First, let's address the name. North Fork BBQ isn't in North Fork. It's in Oakhurst. That is a minor issue. The other half of the name is a bigger problem. You see, when you drive up to the restaurant, you are greeted with a view of a good-sized Santa Maria grill. You don't see a barbeque at all. Grilling is cooking hot over direct heat. Barbecue or smoking is done indirectly with cooler temperatures, usually in the 225-275 range. Having a Santa Maria grill in California isn't actually a bad thing, especially if you are cooking Tri Tip or Chicken, both of which are lean and handle a hot, fast cook well. Tri Tip was originally cooked directly over live Oak on a spit. Enough history. Looking at the menu, it becomes clear that North Fork "BBQ" not only isn't in North Fork- they also don't sell any BBQ.... at all. Semantics? Maybe, unless of course you are actually looking for some slow-cooked ribs, pulled pork, brisket or the like. The semantics could be overlooked if the tri tip was good. Generally, that locally-renowned cut is cooked over direct heat to medium rare, then sliced against the grain for sandwiches. Some people have been playing with cooking "trisket", that is, tri tip barbecued slowly to around 203f. I find the cut too lean for such tricks. The point of the low and slow approach with brisket is to break down the tough connective tissue. That isn't needed with tri tip. It's already lean and as long as it isn't overcooked, it's very tender. To be fair, they are consistent. I've tried "North Fork BBQ" tri tip in several sandwiches. It is the same every time, somewhere between shoe leather and barely rehydrated beef jerky. There is no noticeable seasoning. It's basically just plain roast beef. There isn't even a speck of pink in this meat. It's chewy and horribly overcooked. Calling this barbecue is disrespectful to the art. Overcooking tri tip this way is disrespectful to the cow. Man I hate writing this. The people are just so nice. I just wish their product was palatable. I hear they make a good salad. read more
