Stopped in at O'Briens following our visit to La Vid Fine Wines & Vinoteca, which is just a block or two away in Carrollwood. Full disclosure: we came in for one thing and one thing only -- KARAOKE! We've heard stories about O'Briens karaoke and the singers it draws for years, so we couldn't pass up an opportunity to check it out. It did not disappoint! The only food I tried that night was their fries, which were very good. As for drinks, I stuck to Irish Whiskey, and they've got a very good selection. The bartenders were friendly and attentive, which is always impressive on popular karaoke nights when its loud and crowded -- kudos to the O'Briens staff for keeping it cozy and welcoming! Now, more about karaoke! They've got a spacious "stage" for performers and its a large enough space that singers with big voices don't have to worry too much about being too loud. Sound mix is well-balanced -- you can tell they've been doing this for a while. Pro tip: If you want to sing more than once, get there early! When I put my name in I had 17 singers ahead of me, if that tells you anything about how busy it gets. This is in the same strip mall as the more fancier Sacred Pepper. Didn't realize they had live music until I found them on a Google search as one of the better ones in the Carrollwood area. Their website indicates they've been in business 24 years in Tampa! When we arrived at 7:05 pm the place was about 20% full so plenty of tables for the seat-yourself arrangement. We were surprised to see the music didn't start until 9. Went to 1am. They took a 30 minute break at 9:30 so we cashed out at that point. We started with overpriced soda at $3.50 that resulted in almost $5 for one glass when a 25% tip and tax were added. They have two types of ciders, both excellent qualities with Strongbow and the Irish brand Magners. Prices were fair. Food: I tried their Emerald Isle sandwich, which was excellent with lots of flavor. Rate it 4.5/5. It was supposed to come with a pickle spear but I don't remember there being one. Wondered why they didn't adjust the price since they charged extra for sauce as covered below. The fries were thick and rate them 3/5. My friend got the Murphy's chicken sandwich. This comes with bacon and Swiss cheese; plus fries. Also good with nice flavor. 4/5 Service: Above average. The ladies were hustling and smiling as they took care of the growing requests as the place filled to capacity. Our server was always present and easy to flag down when needed. This justified the 25% tip, so nice job. Parking: plenty in the large lot. Forgot to show our server the Yelp check-in to get $5 off. Only complaints: 1) they charged extra for BBQ sauce. Not only did they not tell us about the up charge but it was a small quantity that should be the same treatment as ketchup or mayo. Furthermore we held the lettuce and tomatoes, so why not be okay with a substitute sauce? 2) While cleaning the table next to us they knocked the bottle of ketchup on the floor where it sat for about ten minutes. O'Briens is more of a 2.5 to me. I've only ever been on football Sundays, so my experience is very skewed. They have an ok menu, but the food isn't great. Their beer and seltzer selection is very average for a bar like this. If you don't have much of an option (unless you're a Steelers fan), I'd recommend elsewhere! If you're a Steelers fan, you should check out the black and gold club. I'm not, but it's fun to join in some Sundays and see the excitement (even when the Steelers are playing like garbage). read more

I flew out of Pittsburgh to Tampa on business. I wanted to make sure I caught the Steelers game. I sacrificed my sleep, and flew out of Pittsburgh at 5 AM on Sunday morning wearing my Jack Ham Jersey representing Steelers Nation to Tampa, FL where we won our last Super Bowl. I read and heard if you want to catch a Steelers game, go to O'Briens Irish Pub. I honestly didn't know what to expect. I arrived at 12:30 PM. The place was slammed with people. Apparently they have a membership that you need to be part of to watch the game in the center. I was greeted by a gentleman by the name of Dwight at the bar. He was affiliated with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was nice, he was a Steelers fan who grew up in New Jersey, but his parents were from Penn Hills and Monroeville area. Everyone I spoke to was from Pittsburgh at some time of their lives. The service was right on target. I ordered food and it was ready immediately. The Chicken Blackened sandwich was impressive. Good Food, Good Beer. I drank Stella because they mainly have domestic only. No LandSharks :( Overall it was great service based on how busy they were. Visited here after attending a comedy show nearby on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Could hear the music beat from the parking lot. Walked into a loud and crowded place - so far so good. Nothing I wouldn't expect when visiting an Irish Pub. After a quick trip to the restroom, the four of us were able to find a table in the far back corner right next to the door going out to the patio. Little did we know, this table was something special. It actually turned all four of us invisible. Witnessed all the servers hustling to all of their tables with an abundance of drinks. The server station was literally right behind us, yet none of them could see us so it's understandable that they didn't interact with us. Witnessed about a 20-minute sound check from the band with tons of mic feedback. When the band finally did get going, the sound was way off. I'm sure for those that were actually served drinks they sounded spot on, but in fact, the sound was really bad. It's too bad too, cause they seemed like they could be a great band. We spent about 30 minutes here before realizing that this place didn't even want our money, so we departed, likely never to return again. The invisible table though was 5-stars. This is a great local pub, especially once you finish a round at Northdale down the road. The marinated chicken sandwich hit the spot and was very tender. They have plenty of seating and real dart boards for those who like to get down in that. Decent beer selection and the bartender was a sweetheart. Consistency is the key to a good business and this place has been consistent with their service and food since the day we walked in. We find ourselves frequenting the bar on Friday after work to wind down with a beer and some chicken wings. The vibe is typically locals that are all hanging out and having good conversations OR you may find a few guys tossing a bag to a friendly competition of cornhole. Food was awful. Overcooked. Fries were hard and salty. I am an Irish immigrant and was hoping to taste something from home. Disappointed. The paper plates were also disappointing. We each had a meal and it was 42$. He had a burger and fries and all I had was Guinness gravy fries and mozzarella sticks. They are $12 for 6. I couldn't even eat one . They add more for credit card. I can assure you, we won't be back there. Those overcooked, over salted fries were gross. I agree with other reviewers. She was so sweet; she brought me extra blue cheese because she was worried that my special order wings might be too dry. Whenever we needed her attention, she was at our table quickly. The wings were really good (not dry) & our catered entrees of pasta, Greek salad, chicken tenders, Shepherds Pie, & Cuban sandwiches was very good as well...or so I was told by six table mates who laughed @ me for taking pics for Yelp:) This Irish pub has an excellent staff (everyone was very friendly), there's a live band (unsure of the nights, but definitely Friday & Saturday), & the food is quite standard pub fare (& good). I am second generation Tampa Native and I have been going to O'Briens pub since i was legally able to drink. My friends and I spent many a St Paddy's day getting smashed and fighting in the parking lot at the old location. I love this pub, and it has a ton of regulars that show up every single weekend and weekday to drink, eat, socialize, and have a good time. There is inside and patio seating (dog friendly& smoking allowed) a stage, and an area to chuck some darts. The patio has huge A/C units for summer and heaters for winter. There is live music on weekends and trivia on Wednesdays, and other things going on during the week. The bar is fully stocked with whatever you need to get your Guinness fix or hard liquor buzz. They have a great happy hour and I have enjoyed it many times. The food is typical Irish Pub food and I really enjoy the Shepards pie, bangers and mash, and their burgers. It's a big menu with many different choices for the whole family. The St Patricks day celebration is a huge event with all kinds of locals and regulars coming out of the woodwork to Party like the Irish. Great local bar. If you're a long time O'Briens veteran who remembers the old location from years (and decades) ago but hasn't been back, this one is much better. The old nasty bathrooms have been replaced with modern bathrooms that are often (I wouldn't say always lol) clean. While I do miss the outdoor tiki hut, the new outdoor patio is FAR larger. Many of the same bartenders remain, such as Trish and Gino. So the normal review for people who've never been; great menu for a bar. Yes they have all the typical bar crap like loaded nachos that you'd expect, but they actually have some not bar food options too. The apple pecan, cobb and farmhouse salads are very reasonable. Quesadillas are of course commonplace at any bar or restaurant, but theirs have decent sized chunks of chicken and don't taste like they were microwaved to melt the cheese. The club sandwich is large, but they go a bit heavy on the mayo so you may want to ask for it on the side if you're not a mayo fan. Corned beef sandwich is very good. Finally, angus burger is great too. Drink prices are run of the mill, tend to be a bit high for premium booze but if you're cool with well drinks, normally they're cheap and strong. Good happy hour prices, and good beer prices during NFL games. Inside, there is no smoking. There also tends to be live music on several nights per week. The complaint about inside is it's a concrete floor and tiled ceiling, and it gets VERY loud in there when there's a band playing since there is nothing to absorb sound. It's easily possible to leave with your ears ringing if you're in there for longer than an hour when there's live music. They have darts and golden tee along with a bunch of TV's. Outside, unfortunately neighbors complained about noise so they had to add these plastic curtains around much of the outside patio area. This has had the bad side effect of making the outside pretty smokey around the bar. There is some seating outside of this area on either end of the patio but those seats go quickly, so it's hit or miss on getting seats. They do allow cigars as well as sell a limited selection, although I wouldn't buy a cigar there, the humidor is basically just a glass box sitting behind the cash register, so you don't really want one of those. Service is typically pretty decent inside or outside. It is kid friendly during the day. This bar is a hangout for UF Gators games and NFL Steelers football, so if you hate those teams, better not go on a day they're playing. :-) read more

O'Brien's is a great place to stop and have a quick drink, or a great Irish meal of bangers and mash or fish 'n chips! Then again, it's a great place to start playing darts and really tie one on, too!! This particular trip to O'Brien's was a yearly celebration of life for my father who LOVED to go here when he would come into Tampa visiting me and the fam from Illinois. We had alot of fun, fuzzy memories hanging out with some of the local guys like Sam & Bert! (Hi guys!!) Always drinking Crown and a beer chaser...at least for me! :-P We ended up having the pretzel sticks and beer cheese which is amazing! Then we shared loaded fries with Irish gravy and some fish and chips all around! They are thicker chips/fries with Guinness gravy that you could drink. Then, the fish is fried without TOO much crust-just the perfect amount. Not the crumbly kind of crust either-the yummy thick kind that leaves the fish all protected and moist! Mmmm!! There was one gentleman working who was very nice and the other two tables appeared to be regulars. I did notice that he wasn't wearing a mask as he traveled from the bar to tables. It was a rambunctious crowd for not being too many people. The service was quick. I had the Sheppards pie which was a good amount of food and tasted good. Great Irish/dive bar experience! Staff is super friendly, with great service. There's live music, an inside bar, and an outside bar. The mozzarella sticks are by far the best thing on the menu! They're delicious. Always a great group of people, and regulars are a variety of ages. This place has gone down the tubes since the old owners kids took it over. Came here tonight (Friday)... place was dead... band wasn't bad but service was terrible! Server was JillIan... worse ever... never came to the table... had to go to the bar several times to get a drink and then got yelled at by the 80 year old bartender because we had a server... when we told him our server never came to the table he said he didnt care, he just didn't want her to bitch at him! Ordered Fish n chips but they were out of fries!!! On a Friday night! $7 domestic drafts? At this dive? Looked at our tab... they charge a credit card fee!!! We were here for a friend's birthday celebration on a Friday night, and it was a fun place for a party. We had a reserved table, live entertainment, danced a good part of the night, and basically, had a great time. We had birthday cake and cupcakes too, and they even brought us plates and napkins for them. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food orders. We had already eaten earlier, so we took advantage of their all day everyday pitchers of Killians Red for $7, and the pitchers had iced centers, keeping the beer nicely chilled and enjoyable.
