Guys, I'm sorry. I'm reading these reviews and I have no idea how these people are giving anything more than 1 Star. I WANTED to like this place. I saw it advertised online and and am a HUGE fan of Caribbean / Latin cuisine. First of all... the "crunchy fried plantains" (in the real world we call them "tostones", we're tragically over cooked. My girlfriend's Arepa was no Arepa at all. My "Peruvian style chicken" tasted like a casserole and looked equally shameful. The empanada dough wasn't completely cooked and the mixture inside was plain and devoid of any real flavor. I'm sorry guys but you've SEVERELY missed the mark here. This may be a serviceable impression of Latin/Caribbean cuisine for those who have never eaten authentic Latin and/or Caribbean cuisine, but I guarantee that if you've ever eaten the authentic versions of these dishes, you will be supremely disappointed. read more

Stopped in to try the empanadas. Had the beef/potato & sausage/potato. Both had good portions of filling & had good flavor. Also tried the potato ball. It was well fried with a nice outer crunch. When you feel that the world is going to hades in a hand basket, lunch helps. The well controlled chaos (not really an oxymoron) of this morning's training session required a food break. I seldom ever eat lunch. We had one hour, so in my disgruntled mood, we just headed for the first place we saw. Surprisingly, we walked into a restaurant that I had had in mind to try. For some reason, I expected Cesar's Bistro to be a free standing restaurant. It is in Marina Plaza, a bit hidden from our view since there was a huge truck in the parking lot in front of it. This is a pleasantly, sleekly yet unhipsterly, decorated spot. Luz, our server, was wonderful. Her cheer hit the spot for these two grouches (that would be us). We ordered light in order to be alert for the afternoon. One empanada each. I had chicken which was quite tasty and bf had sausage which he felt was lacking enough sausage. We had an order of fried plantains which was delicious. Apparently, the plantains are free if yelpers check in. Wanting a little more fortification, I ordered Arroz con Leche. I liked it, especially the coconut in it. Quite sweet. A bit too sweet today for this sourpuss. Occurring fittingly on this wacky day, the charge card was mistakenly declined initially. Just Great! Who needs that? We are looking forward to returning for happy hour. Sounds really good. Parking will probably not be a problem in a problematic parking part of town. read more

I came to Orbra for the empanadas and potato balls after a recommendation from a friend. I was amazed that they offered gluten-free empanadas and got a few of those along with the beef and potato empanadas for a ladies' night with friends. I went for a late lunch. Place is small but fit for its service. It's well kept and the decorations on the walls, along with the style, had a nice lively feel. We ordered all gluten-free foods since I have gluten-sensitivities. It is one of the reasons why we chose to eat at this place. The empanadas come in three. We tried to ask for one, but that's the way it's served. They were good. The plating was nice and I enjoyed the meat in the middle. Although, I would say get the non-gluten one if you can. The bacon burger with the GF bun (thin bun, different than you would think but has a good flavor to it). Thick and juicy! Got it ordered medium-rare. I don't usually like red or slightly bloody steaks, but it was too good not to eat! The side salad with it was good. It helped as a refreshing reset with all the different foods. I also got the GF pizza appetizer. The bread on it was nice, doughy, and soft. We were in and out. Downside, not a lot of gluten-free choices, maybe a handful or so. But the food was delish!! I got the Oreo Cheesecake, Tres Leche Cake, and the chocolate cigar. I didn't get any empanadas which seems to be what they're known for. Can't say if I recommend the empanadas but I don't recommend the bakery goods. The Oreo Cheesecake tasted kinda odd. It didn't really taste like oreo and tasted more like a lactose free oreo. The crust of the cake tasted better than the cream/cheese part of the cake. Tres Leche Cake's cake contents tasted hard and overly sweet. Didn't seem like the contents were well balanced. This cake also has a lot of tres leche on the bottom of it which could result in spillage if you're not careful. The cashier warned me of this which was nice. For the chocolate cigar, it had very minimal amount of chocolate and it was hard to chew on. The texture seemed similar to frozen burrito tortillas. The potato balls while sizable golden brown crunchy treats are more like mashed potatoes with chicken or beef filling overwhelmed by the creamy potatoes. Greatest disappointment sadly was the guava-cream cheese pastries. Customer service was excellent, but that's about it. The only thing I savored was the Cuban sandwich lechon meat. Yes, that part of the sandwich only! I really enjoy having a Cuban sandwich with plantain chips and that was not an option as they do not have any. The comparison to Porto's is far fetched. The portion size on the Cuban sandwich is huge. I believe a six inch from subway is larger. I prefer Tropicana in Downey any day of the week. The cafe con leche was not offered with nonfat milk and let's face it, oat milk is disgusting with a cafe con "leche". I was mostly dissatisfied with the bakery items. We tried the coffee cake, chocolate cake and chocolate chip cookie. The coffee cake's texture was dense, and it did not seem like it was freshly baked. I asked for it to be warmed up to see if that would've made a difference, however it did not. The chocolate cake was not sweet at all and not spongy. I tried empanadas before. This is in ranked #1 in my list now. Their vegetarian empanada was fenomenal, the lentils tasted homemade and the banana Nutella was a great finisher dessert. This is an interesting restaurant that has as a fusion Caribbean flare for lunch and dinner items They have Peruvian food like Lomo Soltado. They have Columbian calenteo. They have paella on occasion. Tonight I decided to just try the empanada and the waitress suggested the beef and potato. It's more like a potato empanada that comes with beef. Lol The outside crust of the empanada was delicious. The empanadas came out of the oven extremely hot and I did burn the roof of my mouth. If you decide to come here for the empanadas be sure to let them cool off before you start eating them. The empanadas come with two dipping sauces. I tried the spicy mayo and it was yummy. Such a hidden gem in long beach! Came here for an early lunch on a weekend and was easily seated since it was not that busy. They have outdoor seating which is great because I came with my dog. The lady working was very friendly and had great service. All the food is delicious! You can't go wrong with any of their food. We got two empanadas (a beef/potato one and a chicken one). We also tried their lomo saltado and their chicken gaucho plates. Everything is pretty big so it is easily sharable. They're known for their empanadas but I favored eating the dishes more, although the empanadas were still very good. The plates of food just had so much flavor with so much variety in it. I loved the gaucho chicken with chimichurri sauce as well as the salad. It came with a side of fries. The lomo saltado had an even amount of veggies and potatoes and it came with a delicious green creamy sauce. Definitely would recommend trying this place out! read more
