Ocean 48 completely exceeded my expectations. This was my first time dining here, and from the moment we walked in, I was in awe. The entrance is stunning, with beautiful displays of fresh seafood right as you arrive, and the smell alone lets you know you're in for something special. I started with the cucumber basil vodka cocktail and the stone fruit martini--both were delicious, but the cucumber basil was definitely my favorite. We ordered oysters to begin, and they were incredibly fresh and flavorful, especially paired with all the sauces that came with them. The absolute standout of the night for me was the torched scallops with caviar. Hands down my favorite dish--truly divine and something I'm still thinking about. For my entrée, I ordered the sea bass and added a lobster tail, along with the shells & cheese (their mac and cheese) on the side. Everything was perfectly cooked and incredibly satisfying. My boyfriend ordered the T-bone steak with potatoes, which he loved. Beautiful restaurant in Newport Beach at Fashion Island. The food is good but prices are higher than normal for a steak and seafood place in Orange County. Corkage alone is $80 per. They are a bit pretentious for my taste. You can't just walk in and sit at the bar; you have to get permission. There is a smaller bar in the back that is said to be exclusive but we were able to sit there the second time we went because the front bar was packed. Its food and selections are on par with Mastro's in Costa Mesa and Newport Coast so I'll just go there instead and save a little money. BUT, it is a beautiful place! They have valet parking but you can also park in the mall parking lot. read more

But that room has limited tables so hard to get seated there. Started off with their buttery croissant like flakey texture then got out appetizers. We ordered the top two appetizers, fried lobster tail and the lobster scallops with caviar and both were delicious. Went to Ocean 48 with high expectations given the connection to the former owners of Mastro's, but unfortunately the experience fell very short. The overall vibe felt more Vegas than elevated--classic rock playing, a flashy atmosphere, and dishes that leaned heavily on excess rather than refinement. A lot of "more cheese with a pool in the middle" energy, and nearly everything seemed topped with crab, caviar, or both, as if that alone was meant to signal luxury. The steaks were especially disappointing and didn't come close to what Mastro's consistently delivers in terms of flavor, seasoning, or execution. The sides felt like one-offs rather than well-thought-out complements, and nothing truly stood out--except the cream corn, which was genuinely good. After becoming enamored with the 44s in Arizona, I confirmed that they're doing it right out here as well. The consistency runs across all options, from the chicken-fried lobster tails to their cocktails and wine list. On this visit to Ocean 48, I tried a couple of things for the first time: Torched Scallop and Caviar--This was the ideal light appetizer; the torching brought out just enough to let the texture of the caviar complement it. As a purist, I could have done without the yuzu ponzu, but it didn't hurt. A5 Wine Fed Waygu- Any time there's something other than Miyazaki as a wagyu option, I've got to try it. Surprisingly, it was chewy because of a denser fat I was not accustomed to when having Japanese Wagyu. Less on the umami side of taste, but still only worth trying in a low-ounce amount. Unless you're someone who relishes trying the meat of different prefectures, I'd pass on this one. Service was excellent as usual. Sheriff Mike came through with the perfect recommendation for a pinot to accompany my steak, and a tasting pour of a chardonnay that went well with our dessert. The lettuce wasn't fresh and there was nothing special about it. Crispy shrimp good as always. Roasted cauliflower was a first try and I liked it but the dressing underneath was a little too heavy on the cream, could have been lighter, or I might ask for the sauce on the side next time. Dry aged bone in ribeye is always a great option to share when sliced and table was happy. The branzino was great to share too, the photo shows a split portion. When looking for a dining spot in Fashion Island in Newport Beach, it came down to Ocean 48 and RH Ocean Grill, the glamourous new Restoration Hardware's top-floor restaurant. I ultimately reserved at Ocean 48. I took a peek at RH Ocean Grill and it is indeed beautiful, with distant ocean views beyond the parking lot, but I thought Ocean 48's menu was more inspired. It proved to be a solid choice. Ocean 48 is a free-standing building (formerly Fig and Olive) nestled in Fashion Island's parking lot, adjacent to Rick Bayless' Red O. Fleming's and Joey are nearby. I would think Fleming's has become less busy since Ocean 48 opened last year. Ocean 48 is part of the Mastro brothers' Steak 48 chain, with a very similar but more seafood-forward menu. I learned (by asking) that the original Mastro Steakhouse chain is now run by another company, but they kept the Mastro name. Mastro's Ocean Club further down PCH is part of this group. A bit confusing! Ocean 48 has an open glassed-in kitchen just beyond the host counter, with a bustling bar area and several dining rooms. I was seated in the pool room, probably the most photographed and photogenic room, with its central shallow blue-lit pool with about 8 tables situated precariously adjacent and numerous booths beyond those. My fabulous server Kylie says a utensil or two has fallen in, but only one person (on New Year's Eve when the lights went out), and surprisingly none of the table lamps. Not surprisingly, I saw no children seated in this room. Slightly reminiscent of Philip Johnson's iconic Pool Room in New York's Seagram Building. Things I found above and beyond: there is a doorman as well as a restroom attendant who directs you to one of the numerous single person genderless stalls, some of which have urinals, all of which have Japanese-style Toto toilets that I would feel guilty using if there was a line. Lastly, the day after my visit, someone called me to ask how my dining experience was. Onto the food--excellent, with many choices from land and sea, and much guidance from Kylie. I wanted something with lobster to start and ultimately chose the lobster escargot (over the lobster cocktail and popular chicken fried lobster tails). Served in a traditional escargot dish with lobster nuggets instead of snails, combined with herbed breadcrumbs and butter, with a gougere-like topping (truffle mornay sauce according to the menu) and dollops of caviar. Delish. All tables are given a pan with 6 rolls baked within. They are rolled and shaped like cinnamon rolls but without the cinnamon. Not served with butter because there clearly is a large amount within already! I usually like a ribeye for my steak choice, but Kylie recommended the bone-in Kansas City strip. It was fine, earthier (as expected) and less fatty than a ribeye. Steaks are seasoned with a proprietary blend (the seafood is seasoned with a different blend) and served on a 500 degree sizzling plate, reminiscent of Peter Luger's Las Vegas (or Ruth's Chris, I've heard). There was a ribcap special that sounded good, but was $100 more. Kylie wisely told me Ocean's medium cook would be a medium rare elsewhere, and she was correct. My go-to sides are creamed spinach and creamed corn. Ocean's creamed spinach also had artichoke hearts, but they were indistinguishable from the spinach. still tasty. The corn creme brulee is a popular side, with a flamed turbinado sugar crust that is crunchy at first but dissolves quickly. Unique and delish. Dessert was a lovely, towering coconut cream pie. I was told about the popular off-menu beignets (served on an antler-like apparatus in groups of 5 or 10); may next time. Overall a delicious and memorable experience. read more

Having dined at Steak 48 BH on numerous occasions I was dying to finally try its sister restaurant Ocean 48. Such a great dining experience. The "48" leadership certainly knows how to train their staff. Both venues offer excellent service and you could not ask for a better dining experience. Although Ocean 48 has a more extensive seafood leaning menu, I found that many of the food offerings were just about identical to these offered at the sister restaurant Steak 48. Me being a bit of a creature of habit I tend to like to order many of my preferred dishes. In this case the Pork Chops, which was very well prepared, again full of flavor and so so delectable it literally melted in my mouth. Now I am not certain if this is a change, but I will say that the cuts were smaller and they were not served on the 500 degree hot plate as was the case in the past. Mother in law tried the Arctic Char. So well prepared with the right mix of basil and spices and she could not believe the portion. Pleasant unexpected bonus The sides were of course excellent. Don't know what they did with the mushrooms this evening , but they were one of the best I ever had. I'm hoping this wasn't a one off since as a side, mushrooms are top on my list. Now a pet peeve I often have with steak house's is that Mac and Cheese are too often a miss. Not here though, as everyone in our party agreed that the shells were "oh so good" Chicken Fried Lobster Tails .. . Where have they been all my life and why have I never tried or even thought of this divinely inspired dish. My Word, so good. So let me get this straight, you offer me Crispy Shrimp Deviled eggs and Soft buttery Bread basket, follow that with those freaking Fried lobster tails to start. Fully knowing that those are but a glorious foretaste of what can be expected? Couple that with exceptional service, beautiful venue and not to mention an extensive drink menu which I do not have the time to review here. Amazing! Everyone is so polite and sweet. They got the hospitality DOWN! General manager, Anthony at Ocean 48 reached out to me and we discussed the concerns I had on my initial visit. He took the time to listen and assured me he would discuss my concerns with his staff so they could make improvements. He invited me back to try them again. On this subsequent visit I had a much better experience. Crispy shrimp ($29) - This was a great appetizer with plenty of crispy shrimp coated in a sweet thai chili sauce and served with some garlic aioli. Big eyed tuna ($58) - I was impressed with the freshness of the tuna here and the presentation was beautiful. Sea scallops ($59) - These scallops were perfectly pan fried and served with a sauce that helped to elevate the flavor profile. Crab cakes ($58) - This came with 2 crab cakes with plenty of fresh crab meat and was another great seafood option. Sauteed wild mushrooms ($18) -A medley of mushrooms was sauteed in some garlic, with parsley, and thyme and was a much better accompaniment then the previous side dish I had last time. Peanut butter pie ($19) - This dessert was rich and decadent with it's peanut butter chocolate mousse, chocolate ganache and a crushed peanut crust. Overall the food items I ordered this time were much better. Service was excellent and the staff accommodated my request to sit by the indoor pool. My family and I went here for Father's Day, and we all had a great time. Our server, Tabatha, was very attentive, knowledgeable about all the menu items, and incredibly friendly. The food was delicious, especially the shells + cheese, chicken fried lobster tails, king crab + shrimp + shells + cheese, and the filet. I love coming to this place -- it's always worth every penny! My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate my birthday, and as always, the service was amazing. I forgot our server's name, but she was so patient, kind, and made great recommendations. Even other staff members stopped by our table to chat, which we really appreciated, especially knowing how busy the restaurant was. The space itself is beautiful and spacious, giving off a classy, timeless vibe. We started with oysters, which were fresh and tasty, but the house bread will forever be my favorite -- so warm and fluffy! The yellowtail crudo had a refreshing citrusy finish, and the crispy shallots added the perfect texture. You have to get the king crab + shell and cheese while enjoying their NY strip -- both were incredible. My personal favorite, though, was the Chilean seabass -- so delicate and perfectly cooked. For dessert, we ordered the beignets and the coconut cream pie, which came out beautifully presented. The staff even comped our desserts since they noticed we had been waiting a little while, which just goes to show how thoughtful and attentive they are. For drinks, I had a dirty martini with blue cheese olives (so good!) and we brought our own wine, which they happily opened and served. Super fancy and definitely was an experience unlike any other steakhouse I have been to, as I am not familiar with any of the dining etiquette or the environment of dining in an upscale place. However, everything from the front door, to the hosts, to the open kitchen, to the service and dining experience made me see the uniqueness and the level of luxury a restaurant may offer. We had a couple old fashions based on recommendations of the server (although the cocktail menu was slightly overwhelming). The server also provided a medley of options and seasonal offerings, as well as taking the time to answer questions I had regarding some of the entrees and cocktails. The complimentary butter rolls were so good we opted to request for a takeout box to bring it home. The dry aged steak was a solid medium rare which paired perfectly with the hot searing plates to cook it through just a smidge more. The hanging bacon were thick cut and hearty and made for a great appetizer. The fried chicken lobster did not have too much batter but enough to provide a crispy shell with delicious seasoning. Pro-tip: We did not realize that the desserts are already on display behind the glass of the open kitchen, but it helps to see the size since the desserts are not dainty. We accidentally ordered two dessert options and had to scarf down the cookie and cream gelato Lou Lou cake since it would melt if we brought it to go. The peanut butter pie was good even as a takeout but honestly each dessert could probably feed 2-4 people at the end of a meal. Also, the paper towels used in the bathroom felt more like linen than paper, which is really an upscale option I may never get used to. So I used to be a LOYAL Mastro's fanatic - it was my favorite restaurant for many years til it got bought by Landry's. Once that happened I noticed a marked decrease in the quality and the service. NO surprise as no corporation is going to put the same love into a restaurant like when it is is family-run, like Mastro's used to be back in the day. You can imagine my surprised and sheer joy to hear that the Mastro's sons opened a new restaurant (can't use the family name since they sold it) AND my first time I was blown away by how much it reminded me of the old school Mastro's when I first visited in Arizona. TBH it's EVEN BETTER! The open kitchen, the fabulous decor, the variety of spaces from gorgeous private rooms to bustling hip bars areas (Not one but two!) to the beyond stunning pool room with it's differing in size cabana booths - it was all AMAZING! Of course, the food also brought me back to the original quality of old school Mastro's with their premium steaks and seafood - the options are endless, and the there's always some amazing specials if you ask too! I've been several times now and every time I go back I try different things and have yet to be even slightly disappointed! I visited this restaurant with my girlfriend to celebrate our one-year anniversary. We had pretty high expectations going in--we even canceled other dinner plans and made a last-minute 9 PM reservation. Since it was Cinco de Mayo, we assumed it might not be too crowded. Overall, the experience was disappointing, especially for what's supposed to be a high-end restaurant. Starting with the appetizers: the hamachi was good, but nothing memorable or impressive. The chicken fried lobster tail was initially exciting, but after a couple bites it became overly salty. The standout among the starters was definitely the escargot--it was well-balanced and enjoyable. That said, even the presentation of the hamachi felt underwhelming. The slices were tightly packed together on a small plate, which didn't give off a fine dining vibe at all. Now onto the main reason for my two-star review. Honestly, if not for the appetizers, I would have considered giving one star. We ordered the sea bass and the Iberico pork chop. From the first bite, we both looked at each other and immediately knew something was off. After trying a few more bites, it was clear these dishes were far below expectations. The pork chop was overcooked, with a seasoning that leaned heavily sour and salty. I had high expectations for Iberico pork, known for its acorn-fed richness and flavor, but this just tasted like a regular pork chop--nothing special. The sauce didn't elevate it either. It honestly made me question whether it was truly Iberico. As for the sea bass, it's typically a forgiving, high-fat fish that can be excellent with proper technique. Unfortunately, this one was dry and simply topped with a bit of salt, with the sauce served on the side. After a few bites, it didn't feel like something prepared by a skilled chef. It even made me wonder if the fish wasn't fresh. This is a level of quality I could easily achieve at home. If this were an average restaurant, it might be acceptable--but for a place charging over $60 per entrée, with no sides included, this level of execution is unacceptable. The whole point of dining out at this level is to enjoy a great main course, and for both of ours to be this disappointing was honestly shocking. We also ordered a side of shell and cheese (mac and cheese). It was very average--arguably even worse than what you'd find at a typical steakhouse. Perhaps noticing our reaction, the staff kindly brought out a complimentary dessert for our anniversary. The dessert was excellent--no complaints there. In summary, aside from the escargot and dessert, the rest of the meal did not meet the standards I would expect from a restaurant like Ocean 48. I understand that in Newport, many people may be willing to pay for the ambiance, but this felt excessive. Honestly, I've had better dining experiences at places like Joey or Houston's. It's disappointing to write this review, especially because when this restaurant first opened last year, everything was solid. But coming back a year later and having this experience--it's a letdown. read more

Service is by far one of the best I've experienced. Servers are so knowledgeable about the menu. Top tier experience. They even switch out the color of the napkins, black or white, depending on your attire so you don't end up with lint on you. Seafood tower is a must. Steak is great too. Ocean 48 has to be one one of the best restaurants in OC I highly recommend that you get valet parking because parking can be tricky It's an upscale restaurant with breath taking decor inside, which is perfect for photos . The service is absolutely top notch And they are super friendly and attentive . My gf took me here for my birthday which was an amazing idea The food is superb ! I got scallops and my partner got the fillet. Price is up there but you definitely pay for what you get . We kicked off our evening with some refreshing drinks. I opted for the passion fruit mojito--I'm not usually a rum drinker, but this one will definitely make it back onto my list. For appetizers, we started with hamachi crudo, which was perfectly sliced and had a great texture thanks to the garnish--easily my favorite. The fried lobster was incredible too; the breading was so well-done, I almost thought I was eating fried chicken but with lobster. The oysters Rockefeller were tasty, though I'd personally love a bit more texture to balance them out. For dinner, I went with the ribeye steak. The fatty parts were packed with flavor, but the rest of the steak didn't quite hit the mark in terms of juiciness and seasoning--despite ordering it medium rare. My girlfriend chose the filet, and that was spot on--juicy and flavorful throughout. The cream corn brûlée stole the show, though. I've never had anything like it before, but now I'm a huge fan. Trust me, add it to your side dish order--you won't regret it. The ambiance was fantastic--chilled and laid-back, even on a busy Saturday night. Despite the crowd, I never felt rushed or stressed, and the staff worked seamlessly to make sure everyone's needs were met. As for service, there's nothing to complain about.
