The service was very good. The ambience is spectacular. The food was good, not great, but it was good and enjoyable. A word of caution for older folks going to visit this restaurant. In addition to taking a little boat to the restaurant, which of course is part of its charm, there is a ladder where you have to get off a rocking boat and climb to the dock. I went there 12 years ago and I can't say that I was bothered by that a bit. But I went back last year and I found it extremely difficult and it was even harder to get back on the boat. Some folks that were older than me and less mobile were really really struggling so make sure you feel like you have the physical capacity to climb up a short ladder to get on the dock. Also, the only restroom is up or rather steep flight of stairs The highlight for me is the location which is spectacular and the little beach that you can take the path to after your lunch. This was quite the experience. I only wish our weather was not so overcast. You can either hike in/out or take a water taxi. You can book the water taxi when you make your reservation online. There is a small fee to go rt. Be sure to have your plans in order as they charge a hefty cancellation fee if you cancel the whole reservation. Two of our party dropped out and I was worried they worked charge us for that, but they didn't. It was a quick water taxi trip over, about 5-10 min. The view was so beautiful as the place was perched up on the cliff side. I got the Alpastor grilled octopus . It was delicious. My husband got the catch of the day which was Mahi Mahi. He said it was the best Mahi Mahi he had ever had. Compliments to the chef and the freshness. The toilet above the restaurant does not have a door or walls, really, but has a great view of ocean. We decided to work off our lunch and hiked back to Boca. It was a fun hike. Steep uphills and down hills. A bit rough terrain but stuff you could hold onto in case you need the help. Be sure to wear sneakers, not flip flops (unless you're 20 and agile). It took us an hour, but I think if we were 40 years younger we could have done it in 35-45 minutes. I have to say I was disappointed. The food was over priced bar food. The grilled octopus was not grilled. It cost us $$$ to get there more $$& to take a boat there. Then they charged us a 18% conversion for using US dollars. I would not go back. We all paid over $ 80 a person just for lunch not to mention transportation charges. The friends I was with said the place does not look like it had a renovation. It is still under construction. The margarita was small. Not much alcohol, too much ice a then a dried piece of lemon & charged us USA prices. They make tequila here. Margaritas should not cost more than $100 pesos. This place is fresh for the ambiance and the atmosphere of the restaurant. You have to take a quick 5 minute boat ride to get to the restaurant and back to land so beware if you get seasick easily and take ginger chews with you. There are only three slots to reserve from: 11am, 1pm, 3pm. My family of four chose the 11am slot and there was only one other couple with us on a Tuesday (during off season). I know this place gets very busy during on season so book ahead of time. If you cancel or reschedule, they charge your card per head so make sure your plans are set. Food: the food was good but I think there's better food out there. Ordered the catch of the day (mahi mahi), Al pastor octopus, and short rib. The best dish and the one they're known for is the Al pastor octopus. The short rib was very big and could feed two people but not something I would get again. The catch of the day was decent but could use more flavor or at least some salt. Overall, this place is nice if you want something different. There's also a mini beach that you can go to after but you have to cross over some rocks. read more

The Ceasar salad was the best I've had outside Cearsar's in Tijuana, the birthplace of the salad. Service: Also very good and quite attentive. Ambiance: the location is unique and beautiful. Allow time (you have about 2 hours if you are using their boat transportation) to visit the darling beach cove right there with a rocky path from the restaurant to the beach. It is worth it. NOTE: Two things: 1. the ladder to the dock from the boat is a test getting up and down in minor athleticism. We watched several older clients struggle - successfully - to get up the ladder, coming and going. The gentlemen that take customers to and from are used to helping and very good at getting people on and off safely. 2. The only bathroom is up two flights of steep stairs. This place is a gem! We were at Hotel Mousai a few weeks ago and our friends wanted to take us to this spot. My friend knows I love food and said we'd love this place along with the beautiful views. We had to take a boat to get to the restaurant; I loved that! The restaurant is outside on a tiered deck with a roof style covering. The menu has a lot to choose from. Our waiter was great and was so attentive. We ordered so much food with our party and all of it was delicious. Presentation was beautiful, prices were so reasonable compared to portion size. We got your basic guacamole and chips; the chips are freshly made and the guacamole was delicious. All the food was fresh and delicious! The aquachile was perfectly done, as well as the ceviche. Both sashimi dishes were epic. So fresh with amazing flavor profiles. I ordered the octopus al pastor per the waiter; it was perfectly prepared with great pairings. We basically ordered all the desserts and they were all amazing! The lava cake took the prize out of all three. All our cocktails were hand crafted and we enjoyed all the Great Danes on the premises. The walk to the bathroom has a photo op with metal angel wings. The bathroom is really cool; it's an outdoor one with beautiful views. What a fun experience. We made a reservation to arrive by boat from the beach at Boca de Tomatlan. It was busy at the beach dock but our boat captain moved up to pick us up efficiently and fast with no problem. We had read the reviews about getting to the dock on time, so we had scrambled a bit, but made it! A fun and scenic ponga ride around the point to the restaurant. Ladies, you may want to wear flats or sneakers on the boat and to climb up the ladder (yes, there is a ladder up to the dock!) and put on your heels or good shoes at the restaurant. We ordered appetizers and drinks. Our entree choices were salmon, shrimp, mahi mahi, grilled octopus, and filet mignon, all great choices. The birthday girl got key lime pie for dessert - delish! If you are visiting Puerto Vallarta you need to go to this restaurant, you can make it a whole day experience. You must make a reservation online on OpenTable in advance: make sure to puck 11am and a weekday to minimize any crowd. Take a cab from Puerto Vallarta to Boca de Tomatlan beach, make sure you leave no later than 10am, road is windy, quite a bit of traffic and road works. The short boat ride will show some great views and you will be in awe as you get to the place. The restaurant view is breathtaking. For the food get some veggies, grilled octopus and catch of the day and your fave drink, you simply can't go wrong. The octopus was incredibly tender and one of the best I have ever had in my whole life! After the meal sport a swimsuit and move to the small nearby playa to take a quick bath; if you have snorkeling gear then make sure to make good use of it. Once you are all refreshed and relaxed you have the choice to go back through the boat ride or the hike. Totally go for the hike (if you are decently fit), it is 40 mins and doable hike through the jungle with more wild views; it is a bit steep at the beginning but it gets easier as you approach Tomatlan. read more

Great experience! The staff is excellent and provide great customer service. We were 30 minutes late for our reservation because we got lost. They sent the boat back to pick us up at no additional charge. The food was mediocre, but I will be back for the location and the short walk to the private beach. They have fans next to the tables which was great as it was hot and humid. The mahi-mahi was good. My son had a cheeseburger which was also good. I would not get the ribs or the clams. This place is all about the experience. I highly suggest you book your boat taxi via the restaurant as it is the easiest way to ensure that you have a ride to the restaurant. Also, you have to make reservations so don't think that you can just show up here. There ended up being quite a long line for the boat over to Ocean Grill But we somehow just walked in front and nobody said anything lol the food here was pretty much mediocre. It all looked really pretty but the only meal that tasted good out of the group was the jumbo shrimp. I was not impressed by the salmon dish, my friend was not impressed with the octopus dish either. The drinks here that are more American are not good at all. I ordered a long island and it was extremely sweet and did not taste good at all. I had to trade out my drink I said my girlfriend. However, despite the food not being that great it was again like I mentioned a great experience. If you are a dog lover you're in luck because there are two cute dogs running around. Just be careful cause the small one will continue to beg for food if you give any to it. After you eat you can head over to the private beach which may be full at times but people come in and out via boat taxi as well. It was super hot so make sure that you have your sunscreen. This is one of my favorite places to go when visiting PV. The setting is picturesque and the food and drinks are very good. There's not too much that can beat having a meal while listening to the waves crash against the rocks. The grilled octopus (their signature dish) is my favorite. Their jumbo shrimp are tasty as well as their catch of the day. When I was last there it was mahi mahi. Also be sure to try their house margaritas! This may sound weird but use their bathroom. Just don't forget to put the sign down. You'll know what I mean when you get there. Best view in the restaurant. Ok. Why the four stars and not the five? Their beach used to be private or at least it seemed like it was primarily used for the restaurant patrons. This is no longer the case with boat load after boat load of people being dropped off. Often times the boats will be blasting loud music taking away from the ambience. It's not a big deal but also somewhat annoying. Lastly, you pretty much need a reservation to eat there. To get there you have to take a boat from Boca de Tomatlan. There will be a contingent of guys who will offer to take you to Ocean Grill. A couple will even tell you that your boat has left and will not be returning in order to scare you into using their services. DON'T FALL FOR THIS. There are three seating times per day (11am, 1pm, and 3pm) and with your reservation the boat will pick you up. You will be charged 100 pesos on your bill regardless. You can also walk/hike in which takes about 30 minutes. Lastly, an important note is Ocean Grill is CASH ONLY. There is no wifi therefore they cannot and will not accept credit cards. They can take U.S. dollars in addition to pesos but remember to bring cash! read more

This tucked away restaurant is really in a cool area! It's a quick water taxi ride to a beautiful spot! The boys that ran the water taxi were friendly and helpful as well as the staff. We ordered the guacamole & the Marlin tostadas for starters! And we shared the jumbo shrimp which had a delicious sauce! I probably wouldn't have got full on the shrimp alone if it was my only meal. So if you have a larger appetite get an appetizer. They had the cutest dogs that roam the restaurant, The little black one is quite demanding and will bark at you to give her food. I didn't mind, she was pretty cute.. but if you're not a dog person keep that in mind. My only complaint would be that they refused to do separate checks. There was only one other table of 2 in the restaurant besides us (which was 4) so it definitely wouldn't have been hard to put an order on one piece of paper and an order on another piece of paper to help us out. We booked a reservation, and had to cancel it, and we were still charged .So, we re- booked for the following day, took a Taxi out to Boca, and then found a boat to the Restaurant, only to find out it was closed. We wasted all morning getting out there and back, and spent 700 pesos for nothing. We still have not received a refund to date. Thank goodness it was put thru on our credit card, so we can resure the charge , as we did not receive the service as promised. We heard it that this is a real good place. It does not look very lively at all. And, you better be in good physical shape to get on and off the boat. I would not attempt another trip out here for all the rice in China ! We screwed up and were at the wrong pier. Frantically, knowing we would miss our reservation, we hired a ponga $ 100 dollars later we miss the res by five minutes. Yelling at us from the pier the kitchen was closed and they would not take us in. The Restaurant was packed and yet no room for our 5 min late reservation. We ended up at "the cliff "right next door who welcomed us with open arms and we spent three hours over delicious offerings and repesado y tequila. By far the perfect anniversary. I went to Ocean Grill with some family friends who frequent Puerto Vallarta. They had dined at Ocean Grill many times in the past and had only great things to say of the food, service and experience. However things were a big let down for them and myself this time around. We went on a Tuesday at 3pm. Water taxi was fine. They had to do two trips to accommodate everyone. We got a table facing the water. You do get charged for the boat ride (100 pesos per person) and they just add it to your bill. Or you can hike there. Overall the boat ride was fine. We got seated and then wanted a nice cocktail. Our server let us know that there was no cocktail menu - which is a let down because we love fun little cocktails. So we order two glasses of Pinot Grigio and a beer. He wanted to take our order as we placed our drink orders so we hurried to decide. We got 2 catches of the day (mahi mahi - about 380 peso) and them shrimp (480 peso) Each dish comes with one side. Not even five minutes later here comes our food. We were happy to put it in before a large party until we dive in. My shrimp were luke warm at best and tough. One of the mahi mahis was also barely warm and the other was properly heated through.... We didn't see our server again until we asked for the bill. While we were dining we did over hear another patron (single older woman by herself) ask to get moved to an empty spot by the water. The waiter refused her and then we saw him move a couple closer to the water.... Overall the food was not very good - we had better shrimp the night before at home. Service was lacking. Cocktail menu was non existent. We didn't want to waste anymore money on dessert so we waited for the boat back to come at the beach. Nice view and experience but don't waste your money. I suggest going somewhere downtown or Le Kliff if you want to take the drive out somewhere. Not worth the money $$$ read more

A friend of ours found this place, so off we went. The restaurant is a 25 minute cab ride and 5 minute boat ride south of old PV. The cab ride cost about $12USD, very affordable to what we're used to, and the boat ride is free if you're dining at Ocean Grill, which is open only for lunch. Once at the pier in Boca de Tomatlan, you jump into a small boat that takes you to the restaurant which is one cove over. The ride was smooth. We arrived 18 minutes past our 1pm reservation, but was warmly welcomed to our corner, oceanfront table. We didn't experience any problems with tardiness, which wasn't our fault anyway, as the first shuttle boat was full. ATMOSPHERE: The restaurant is built on a deck and into the cliff side. The onwer's huge dog greets guests with a friendly bark hello. There's an open-air grass hut and umbrella-protected seating, with killer views and calming ocean music. A relaxing lounge area with sofas look out onto the beautiful Pacific next door. The single, unisex toilet is up a flight of steps and totally outdoors. It's fairly private with foliage, and as long as you lower the parking lot-like "occupied" arm, that'll keep traffic down a few steps. Very cool, but difficult for those with walking disabilities. MENU: Salad, seafood apps, chicken, fish, burgers, lobster, octopus, ribs. They were out of lobster, scallops, and oysters for the 1pm seating. BEVERAGE: 2 in our party thoroughly enjoyed the green margaritas. FOOD: Shrimp Aguachile - I've never eaten raw shrimp before, but it was surprisingly good, and not "shrimpy" tasting at all. A generous amount of shrimp were bathed in a green lime sauce that had a smooth, savory and tart flavor, mixed with cucumbers, and topped with red onions & cilantro. Very refreshing app to start with. Ocean Grill Guacamole - Yummy, chunky, and creamy guac! The best yet we've had in PV. The chips were on the thicker side. Caesar Salad - Whole baby romaine leaves were coated in a fairly good caesar dressing, sprinkled with soap box cheese (AKA Kraft,) and topped with croutons. Mainstream but good. Shrimp - Wow, these 4 buggers were huge! Cooked perfectly in a light butter-garlic sauce with a slight hint of coconut. I'm not a coconut fan but could tolerate it in this dish. Highly recommended. Octopus - The partial mollusca sported 3 fairly thick suction cup legs, over 3 small breakfast-style potatoes, topped with a kalamata olive tapenada, and a plate side drizzle of a tomato-pineapple-onion-like salsa. The texture of the octopus was good, tender yet slightly chewy, but overall had zero taste. I come from Hawaii where we make octopus in several different styles with tons of flavor. Not here. Pass. Ocean Grill BBQ Ribs - My spouse's dish. The meat was super tender and fell off the bone, and was basted in a traditional BBQ sauce. Very mainstream but good. He opted for a side of fried plantains which I didn't try. DESSERT: We declined any after being told that all the desserts are from Costco sans for one item. Bleh. SERVICE: Our local male server was friendly but not all together there. He hardly checked on us, so my spouse's request for more BBQ sauce for his ribs wasn't met. Dishes got dropped off to the wrong person at the table, and he plainly didn't seem into being there. There as another male server or bus boy, who I think was American that was helping him out, was very friendly and professional. Another guy, I'm presuming who is the owner, checked on us during our apps session. TIPS: Children under 14 are not allowed, which is great for a relaxing experience, but could also be a safety issue due to the boat ride and access to the restaurant. Open for lunch only. Reservations via credit card are required. Not handicapped accessible. There are a lot of house rules, so check out the website before committing. No cell reception. We were charged a big deposit for our large group. I see the need for a deposit because a no-show hurts the business but it was way too high. We all ate and some had dessert and a few drinks. The bill was less than the deposit and we were only offered a credit for the unspent balance. Since we may not have a chance to return we took the balance in takeout food. Take a deposit but make it reasonable amount or refund it when we all arrive. We asked in advance what happens if we underspend and the manager chose not to answer. The trail was not well maintained. It may not be the restaurant's responsibility but they do recommend it on their website. The dock for the shuttle boat is extremely unsafe. Will not go back. read more

Eating at Ocean Grill was unforgettable. My friends and I hiked there the day after Christmas 2019. The weather was gorgeous and sunny, and we were a hungry, sweaty, slightly dusty crew when we arrived at the restaurant. Fortunately, the ocean waves crashing at the base of the cliff cooled us, and the restaurant staff welcomed us with open arms (we had reservations). Some of our party had taken the boat to the restaurant. Lunch started with guacamole, which was creamy perfection. Next came some purple onion-laced ceviche containing delicate pieces of fresh, flavorful white fish. Our foodie friend Rich P., who made our reservation, recommended the "pulpo" (octopus), but our server cautioned us to get it only if we "love" octopus. He said that the dish was divine, but he hated to see people waste it if they weren't really up to it. My friends said, "yes, please," but I don't like to eat tako , so instead I chose the catch of the day, which was magi-mahi. I selected the Ocean Grill sauce to go with it and paired it with plantains. While we waited for our food, our friend Rich literally went and jumped off the nearby pier into the billowing blue-green sea below. It looked exhilarating--and crazy! When the food arrived, everyone in our party of thirteen (aged 13 to 81) reveled in every bite and offered each other a taste of magnificence. Drinks included ice cold beers, Mexican Coca-Cola, a refreshing green agua de piña , piñas coladas and plain water. There was no room for dessert, but most of us piled into one of the boats. Our server informed us that the boats only went to the dock every two hours, so we hustled out of there in time to catch our ride back to our cruise ship. One of if not, the best restaurant lunch experience on PR. We took the 6 1/2 peso ride from downtown to the last stop. Walked 2 blocks down to the bay and hopped the water taxi Ocean Grill had waiting for us. The approach was spectacular. The private beach and even the Great Dane who greeted us was amazing. All grilled seafood, great drinks and you sit right next to the water! The owner was there talking to everyone and making sure we had fun. We walked the private beach as well. We will do this again on our next trip! read more

This place is definitely for the adventurous types and you must have reservations to dine. We were staying at Fiesta Americana and it took two buses to get here. First bus to the romantic zone where you'll pick up an orange bus to Mismaloya and on to Boca de Tomatlan. Nothing too difficult but plan to spend at least 45 minutes on the ride here. Once in Boca walk down the hill to the boat ramp to meet the boat for a 5 minute ride to the restaurant. We started with fish ceviche and guacamole. The servings were large and we couldn't finish them. Of course we didn't want to spoil our appetite for the main course, the catch of the day. The fish was another generous portion, lightly grilled with plenty of garlic and served with fried plantains. Jose our waiter was very friendly and provided excellent service throughout our meal. Alfonso, the owner, stopped by our table to greet us and stopped again to see how our meal was. Wilson even stopped by a few times as well. Overall this is a great experience and one I would definitely do again when back in Puerto Vallarta. read more

My wife and I, and another couple came here for lunch during Valentines weekend 2019. The food was good. A little pricey for what it was, but you're paying for the experience. We wanted to take the hike to the restaurant and boat back, however there is a lot of confusion about the surrounding area and the hiking path access. After speaking to many locals in Boca (some nice and some rude), we decided to just take the boat both ways. The boat ride was short and pleasant. I typically get sea sick and this ride didn't bother me at all. Get in and out of the boat MIGHT be problematic depending on your physical condition. This place is about 30 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta, in a small town called Boca de Tomatlan. You will need to take a small boat ride to the restaurant, or hike for about 40 minutes. But let's face it, I am not someone that can survive a hike, so even though I am afraid of boats and open water, I took the boat. The place is beautiful and open. The views from the place are truly amazing. The water surrounding the cliff is clear and you get an urge to take a swim there. The food was good, but nothing extraordinary. We got the smoked marlin tostadas as our appetizer, and the catch of the day and shrimp with the ocean grill sauce (garlic, lime, butter, and something else). The tostatas were our favorite dish in this place. For drinks we got some mojitos, which were very refreshing, and for dessert we got a cheesecake and some coffee. There is also a huge dog that lives there and walks around the tables, barking at the boat as it approaches, but never at people. The only reason this place doesn't get five stars is because we waited for the Ocean Grill boat to pick us up at the little pier for a long time, and the boat arrived late. The boat driver guy got off, went to do something around the town, came back and cleaned the boat, and then finally we were able to board. This was after 11am, when our seating was scheduled at 11, and the boat was scheduled to pick us up at 10:50. But I was willing to forgive that, until we arrived to the restaurant only to be told immediately by the server that we were late and had to order immediately. I thought the restaurant would be full and they would need our table but by the time we left there was only one group eating there and plenty of tables available, so not sure why the server felt the need to hurry me into giving him my order. There were a few other appetizers/drinks we wanted to try, but we felt hurried so we skipped it. I would go again just for the views and perhaps to enjoy the small beach next to the restaurant, not necessarily for the food or service. read more

This place is amazing! The experience starts as soon as you leave your hotel! The beautiful Scenery leading down to the little village where you get the boat is wonderful. To get to the actual restaurant you need to take a little lancha. Less than 10 min ride. The food was really good. The aguachile 10/10! There's a very beautiful beach there too! The people working there were so nice they let us to go a special place where we got engaged! I love this place.! Will always have a part in my heart! read more

If you're in Puerto Villarta you have to experience this place. After the quick boat ride taxi to the restaurant you dine right on the ocean. Every dish prepared was exquisite and you can't beat the background scene. To top it off you'll swim at a gem of a beach down the path. Makes for an amazing afternoon. read more
