This is a must-do at least once in a lifetime! For us, it started with a bumpy and very full public bus from the south side of PV to Boca de Tomatlan. You walk down a bajillon stairs and turn right to the concrete dock. Catch the Live Love Grill boat at your scheduled time, then a 5 minute boat ride to the restaurant. Make sure you're one of the first off the boat to get a table closest to the water. The restaurant sits over a cliff on a secluded beach. It really is breathtaking. All the tables are under a large palapa roof, there is another open deck with patio sofas for hanging out after you've finished your lunch. You can also walk down the dock to the right to the beach and swim in the cove. When you arrive, you are given a table, a menu, and a cool washcloth. Service seems to move like a well orchestrated dance. They offer the house margarita, and I suggest taking them up on that. My oh my was it tasty. Not like any margarita I've had before! We then ordered an appetizer and our lunch. We settled on the marlin tostadas (holy crap yum), he had the burger with fries, and I had the catch of the day with OG sauce. It was all divine. Really the best fish I'd had this whole 2 week trip. Boyfrann really enjoyed his burger, though it was covered with literally half of a red onion. He didn't know how to handle that one, so the onion came off and went into my belly. Everyone is happy. I felt like the service was a bit rushed for Mexico. I understand they're on a time crunch, but the menu was literally pulled from my hand before I was done reading it. Also, I wasn't fond of the owner and his detached demeanor. Our bill was 600 pesos. I put 1000 pesos in the basket. He asked if I wanted change. I'm not tipping 400 pesos on a 600 peso bill, thank you very much. Yes, I want change. I'm really glad we made the reservation and the journey here. It really is a beautiful place with stellar food. read more

This has to be one of the best food experiences I've ever had. It's a journey to get there which was part of the fun. A long cab ride from hotel row to the water taxi (40 minutes or so). We opted not to hike since we didn't want to be all sweaty and gross to eat. It was a beautiful boat ride and the approach up to the beach and restaurant wasn't disappointing. The service was exceptional and attentive. We had the fresh guacamole and chips to start. I had the fresh catch with lemon, ginger sauce and plantains. It was perfect. Others in our party had the shrimp or the fresh catch with Ocean Grill sauce. No one was brave enough to do the octopus. Maybe next time? I wish we would have brought our bathing suits and came earlier to just relax and enjoy the ambience. Things you should know - they only take cash and no kids under 14. Try the house margarita! We booked through their website. You can only get there by a boat. It's a purple boat with the logo and "Live, Love, Grill" on it. The boat ride is about 3 mins. Get to the pick up location early enough because once you get to the restaurant, the tables are first come first served. There is a big Great Dane at the restaurant m, he's gentle and quiet, didn't bother us at all. Their food was good. We ordered fish ceviche and the this was the best ceviche ever! We also ordered grilled fish (Mahi Mahi) and grilled octopus. They were both good, octopus was tender too. Before you get on the return boat, you can walk the beach next to the restaurant. From start to finish this was an awful experience. We should have known when even trying to make reservations wasn't easy to do. We took a 2 hour shuttle from our hotel to come here, what a mistake that was. There was 12 of us total and the majority of the group didn't like their food. In fact, the veggie burger had hair in it, the tomahawk steak smelled like rotten meat, the lobster wasn't prepared properly, and the French fries tasted like they were dipped in lemon juice. While we were eating one of the servers dropped salsa and it splattered on 1/2 the table, even ruining one of our friend's shirts. Our bill was just shy of 1000 dollars and we left a tip of what we felt was appropriate and went down to the beach. We spent maybe 20 mins at the beach and walked back to the restaurant to get to the boat. Once we got back to the restaurant we were approached by the server and told we did not give enough of a tip. The server went down to the dock and untied the boat so we could not leave the restaurant until we paid more. So not being left with a choice, we gave more money. Once we got back to the main dock, our shuttle that we had already arranged was there waiting. We got into the shuttle and our shuttle driver was told my guys at the dock that he had to pay a fee. Our shuttle driver said we don't need to pay a fee and gave push back to the guys working at the dock. Then more and more guys from the dock came out and were approaching the shuttle from different angles. We started getting really scared and were not left with a choice, so we paid. A couple of years ago my girl and I came here with some friends and this time we're on a family vacation and just had to show them the whole experience. They LOVED it just as much as we did. REOPENED AND LOOKS BEAUTIFUL! Today, we had the best day at Ocean Grill in Puerto Vallarta. It was a surprise day for me and my husband planned everything. He made a reservation online (which we didn't receive confirmation for until after we just returned home), then used the helpful reviews on Yelp to navigate our way to the beach, the dock, and the boat taxi to Ocean Grill (100.00 pp). Once we arrived, we were welcomed by an amazing server/host Jose. We ordered bottled water and two house margaritas (fresh mint, ginger, blended & light tequila) and a bottle of water (Kirkland) while we checked out the menu and met Wilson (the 2nd) the Great Dane "puppy." Our first course was the Marlin Tostadas. I don't like Marlin, and I don't like smoked fish, typically. Yet, these were INCREDIBLE. My favorite thing we ordered. They are served on a crispy tostadas with a yummy queso sauce below a huge heap of smoked Marlin in a flavorful sauce with avocado, cebollas, and cilantro on top. Then we ordered two classic margaritas and the ceviche. The margaritas were good. Very lime-y (although a little light on the tequila). Our service was great from course to course. We were offered fresh plates, napkins, utensils (which we mostly declined, but appreciated the attentiveness). Course three was Mango Margaritas (we were on a roll and not enough tequila to feel tipsy yet) and the Grilled Jumbo Shrimp. My partner had seen them in other reviews and ordered them with the Ocean Grill preparation (garlic, butter, lime, Chile, coconut) they were his favorite thing we ordered. I like a simpler preparation, but the presentation and quality was beautiful. (We had veggies on the side.) We met the owner, Ernesto, who was so kind, invited us to see his home, and come back for a dive/snorkel later this week. We loved this place and highly recommend it to everyone. It was the perfect day. We were offered desert, but declined because the wind had changed and we wanted to get a quick swim in before the rain began. We went down to the dock, dove off, swam to the shore and walked back on the path. We visited in July and had a spectacular experience. From the boat pickup at Boca De Tomatlan to the original margaritas and petting Wilson, it's beautiful. The Octopus was fantastic and Prawns were superb. The Margaritas are something to write home about. You've never tasted anything like it and will remember it forever. I'd be surprised if you ever wanted to leave, but you'll have to go sometime. It was a little splurge that we'd love to repeat whenever we can. Horrible experience!!!! Do not waste your time or your money. The food was bland and 1 of our meals had hair in the food. The customer service was also horrible. One of the waitresses spilled salsa on 2 of us. They didn't want to let us leave the restaurant because they wanted more money as a tip. They would not let us get on the boat to go back until we paid more money. Nothing from this experience was worth it. If i could give 0 stars i would. The only reason i gave 1 star is because it wouldn't let me post the review. The men in the city also wouldn't let us leave with our taxi (that was already paid for) they wanted $50 to leave the city. Very scary experience. Everyone just wants to take your money. We parked our yacht and swam to the little beach just to hike and get something to eat at the restaurant. We all had our bathing suits on and wanted to enjoy some drinks and food. We got to the top and were told by the hostess that we needed a reservation because they were completely full which I thought was funny because some tables were empty. I asked to sit at the bar and again she said no. We turned and walked away back to the beach, stayed there for about an hour and the entire time the table we asked to sit at remained empty. Having been told about this place and finding it closed for a year, I was curious to experience what the talk was about. This place takes you away from the city to remote beach cove in 25 minutes. Porta Vallarta food gone gourmet in a castaway setting. Shrimp Aguachile was incredible. Grilled Octopus was killer Mahi mahi in their signature sauce was indescribably delicious. Hands down the highlight of our trip so far. I'm opting to take some time here to write and thank Ernesto and his staff for such a lovely experience. Nothing will beat the ambiance here and the service was impeccable. We ordered the grilled vegetables, Cesar salad, ribs, fries, and plantains and ice cream - all were beautifully presented and it was the best meal we've had so far. Beyond that good conversation with our server (I'm sorry I forgot his name), he was a joy in the experience. Im so thrilled we decided to go for the adventure to get to Ocean Grill. Tip for arrival: I recommend taking the traditional water taxi versus the private boat service. Or if you do a private boat only pay half the amount until they return. A 4 STAR review???? It is obvious you have not been there recently. For years this was always our must-go-to place on our numerous trip to PV. We were there in Sept 2019 - the place has a new owner/manager - don't know, cause no one greeted us. We did not go in 2018 but did go last month. The place is run down and obviously not cared for. Previous owner/manager sent a boat to pick us up from Boca de Tomatlan (a 5 minute boat ride for free.) Now, after a 45 minute cab ride from PV, you have to pay 160 pesos to get to the restaurant. Ocean Grill had a huge friendly great dane that was always on the pier to greet you. Now there is a very unfriendly "same looking" great dane, that is named Wilsonia. Trying to reproduce something that worked so well, is not working now. I gave this ONE star just because of the view. read more

I called back and asked for a refund and the same kid put me on hold to talk to the manger and said I was annoying and should never come back. The view heading here was amazing and breath taking. The staff was very friendly and informative. The food was delicious so were their margaritas! The owner stopped by to make sure everything was good. He was very kind to us and made sure we were taken care of. A plus side was his sweet dog hangs out at the restaurant! I love dogs so this was bonus for me. The only thing I could say negative was it took a bit of time for them to calculate our bill for us. Other than that, I will be back! read more

If you have time for only one excursion during your visit to Puerto Vallarta, make it a trip Ocean Grill. Our afternoon here was the highlight of our trip. Muchas gracias to David T. for clueing us in! My only regret is that we didn't make it here during our first PV vacation. The Details: Open Wednesday through Monday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Reservations are required. Seatings are at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Cash only, pesos preferred (they will also accept U.S. dollars if necessary, but don't be that guy). No children under age 14 allowed. Getting There: Our original plan was to take a taxi to the bus station and then the bus to Boca de Tomatlan to catch the water taxi. But when our taxi driver told us it would only cost a total of US$15 for him to drive us all the way to Boca de Tomatlan, we were sold. It's about a 30 minute ride along the coast from downtown and it's a beautiful drive. The water taxi arrives 15 minutes prior to each seating time and will make as many trips as possible to get everyone to the restaurant. You can also hike through the jungle from Boca de Tomatlan. My understanding is that it takes about 40 minutes and requires sturdy shoes and bug spray. The Experience: Ocean Grill is part beach palapa, part jungle tree house sitting next to a gorgeous (albeit small) private beach. Wilson, the extremely polite Great Dane, will be hanging around the dining and lounge areas. I couldn't help but think that if this place was in the U.S., a giant gift shop would be oh-so-conveniently located on the dock. You'll find no commercialism here, just lots of nature and a delightfully laid-back atmosphere. My advice is to make a afternoon of it for swimming and sunning on the beach either before or after your reservation time. I'd also recommend wearing your swimsuit underneath your clothes since there is only one bathroom and no separate changing area. No lockers or other kind of storage is available either, so be prepared to keep up with your stuff. The Food: I'm not much of a margarita fan but I wholeheartedly endorse the house basil margarita for a terrific way to kick off your meal. We shared the chips and guacamole and grilled oysters for our appetizers. I'd never had grilled oysters before and not only were these the largest oysters I think I've ever seen but they were super fresh. Raw oysters are also available (if I'd had more room in my tummy, I probably would have ordered a dozen or so to slurp down). I had the red snapper over grilled veggies entree and Mr. P. chose the jumbo shrimp with black beans on the side. Your server will recommend a sauce to go with your dish. I was skeptical because I normally don't like my dinner to be drowning in sauce but the house sauce was very light and a great accompaniment to the fish. Both dishes were fantastic and this was by far one of the best meals we've eaten during our two trips to PV. I also enjoyed a glass of crisp, unoaked chardonnay that was most definitely the best vino blanco I've had in Vallarta. A slice of key lime pie would have been the best way to cap off a lovely meal but we were already stuffed and happy. So, lesson learned. Some useful tips: - Reservation only. There are three seating times, 11:00, 1:00, 3:00. - If you don't want to spend too much money getting a cab from Puerto Vallarta, you can take the bus from south side of town that says "BOCA" in the front. It costs 8 pesos and stop at the corner of Constitución and Basilio Badillo. Most likely Boca de Tomatlan will be the last stop. If you are unsure, it takes about 35 minutes to get there from Puerto Vallarta and lots of people will get off there. You will see many stairs going downhill at this stop. Ocean Grill's boat should be ready to pick you up from the dock. - Cash only. - The views alone justify going to Ocean Grill. Onto the food: Generally, everything tasted fine but not amazing. The one thing that was AWESOME was the house margarita, blended with mint and ginger. For a point of reference, I like my cocktails to be fresh and refreshing like a mojito or gin and tonic, and Ocean Grill's margarita hit the spot for me. We ordered the ceviche, burger and octopus. The octopus was very tender. It comes with a kalamata tapenada so if you don't like olives, steer clear although I must admit, I usually don't like olives but loved this dish. The rest of the food was good enough but forgettable. Extras of this restaurant features a bathroom with a view at the top of the hill, and a small private beach near it. The water is clear but the waves are a bit rough. I would plan to spend an hour before or after your meal here. I wished I took my snorkeling gear. You can swim out to Wilson's Island which can be seen from the restaurant. One last thing - The dog. There is a huge black great dane that resides here. Very friendly :) read more

We are not very picky eaters and we appreciate good service. But this place was the worst food experience in Puerto Vallarta. The ride there was fine. The view is great, the drinks (house margaritas with ginger and basil) were good but small. The food though was another story. While the guacamole and the tostadas were ok, the tomahawk steak (priced at 1850 pesos!!!!) was a complete disaster. It was definitely not enough for two people, it was 1/2 fat and gristle and it was cooked rare when we had asked for medium. It was tough and very chewy and we basically just ate less than half. We showed the server and complained. When the bill came they did not take off anything!!!! The server said he talked to the manager and the manager said oh well. We also ordered the octopus which arrived cold and had to be sent back to be reheated and it was not very good either. The only decent plate was the salmon, although the accompaniments were measly. I just love this place! A totally unique experience that you'll remember for a very long time. I don't think I need to get into the amazing location and the need to access by boat (as other have already described it). Great food, fabulous drinks and ambiance that is simply unmatched by just about any cliff hanging, boat-access-only, welcome to paradise location you can imagine! There were a group of us, and we made a day of it. and we tried just about everything on the menu. Expensive but worth every penny! We came to PV for our honeymoon and heard about this little gem. We took a cab from our resort near the Malacon in PV. The cab ride was about $220 Pesos each way. Our cab driver waited for us which was really nice as cabs do not come to this area often. We came during the off season so it was not that busy. He dropped us off at the pier and we waited for the purple taxi boat to take us to our destination. It was a great little boat ride. Everything at this restaurant is very fresh and their only means of cooking is by BBQ. We ordered the oysters (BBQed oysters are my favorite way to eat them), the octopus and the shrimp. The oysters were the best I've ever had! Not sure why, but we were charged twice for them. We got 6 total and it was $240 Pesos. (See picture of bill) I'd pay that amount again though for them - they were that good. I loved the ginger! They were also served with a lime-cilantro sauce that I could have drunk it was so good! My husband got the octopus and it was very tender. Not chewy in the least. He used to eat a lot of octopus when he lived in Japan and we don't find much good octopus n the states (even here in CA). The shrimp were also delicious. We were very pleased with both the flavor and the quality of food. After lunch we walked to the beach and took a quick dip in the ocean. Wilson came along for the adventure and took a dip with us. That dog was absolutely adorable. I just wanted to take him with us. Overall, it was a great splurge for a very memorable experience. Ocean Grill is an amazing restaurant with great food and great views! Getting here is half the fun too. The boat takes you from a cool village, Boca de Tomatlan, to the restaurant. The food here is delicious, had the catch of the day(red snapper) over fried plantains one of the best tasting combos I've ever had. We also got the shrimp, very large and tasty! The Guac here is really good too. We met the owner very nice and makes you feel welcome. The also had a horse of a dog roaming around very friendly. Loved the bathroom too, what a view. Also took time to walk to the nearby beach cove it was great too! You have to make reservations in advance, and well worth what it takes to get to this wonderful place! read more

Probably my favorite place on earth to have lunch...Sorry Mom ;) It is kind of a logistical nightmare to make it out to this cliffside restaurant and bar, but If you are up for the journey, you will not be let down. They send you a list of things you must do in order to adapt to their restaurant, such as only 15 minute tolerance, cash only, etc. We were on time but there was a lot of traffic on the highway and the docks where you have to take the boat to get there are 30 minutes away from downtown Vallarta, on the way we had to stop at ATMs to get cash, many didn't work (Mexico), then you arrive to Tomatlan and have to park the car on a dirt road which was packed and there were exposed trash deposits everywhere with horrible smell, then we took a boat to get there, they wanted to charge us $200 pesos per ride (About $15), the ride is less than 5 minutes, we managed to get pay only $5 dollar each for the ride, then we arrived to the restaurant 10 minutes late after the tolerance time, we had tried calling them but they don't have a phone, not even a freaking cellphone. The restaurant was half empty so we thought we were good but then the owner came out and kicked us back to the boat super impolitely and that just ruined our whole day, we had to land on another beach and eat in a beach restaurant in Las Almas which had good food but it was packed and there was a huge line to get back to the boats on the way back. We ended up asking ourselves "why the heck did we come all the way here?" This is a tourist trap, many restaurants in Mexico are like this and they gain popularity by giving commission to taxi drivers, etc. for promoting the place. Read other reviews; it's dangerous to disembark and you see the helmsman rushing to the restaurant to prepare the drinks aka total lack or organization. They were half empty but they probably cook everything in groups in order to save costs and then they probably kick you out after one hour. The trip was an ordeal for our parents who are in their 50s, now imagine how's like for elder people If you're looking for adventure then take an excursion to the Marietas, that's really worth it and they have much better infrastructure at Marina Vallarta. read more

AMAZING!!!! My favorite restaurant in PV. This place is such a cool experience. You HAVE to make reservations though. They have a water taxi that takes you from Boca Tomatlan to the place. You either boat or you hike. We took a boat there and hiked back. Had some amazing views but it was a pretty intense hike. Definitely not for older individuals or anyone with any sort of health condition. The hills are very steep and the stairs and rails along the way had some that were very unstable. We showed up early and hung out in the bar area in the lounge furniture and drank the BEST margaritas ever. Get the house margarita. It's so amazing and refreshing. We had a few of those then our table was ready at 1pm. We had ceviche, swordfish bites, guacamole, octopus, red snapper and more marga of course! Everything was incredible, including the service. Afterwards, we went to the beach which is about 50 feet away. I would say watch out for jellyfish that wash up there. We saw one on the beach and two in the water. It was a nice beach though and very fun to play in the water after having such a great meal. read more

The service was amazing and the atmosphere is top notch! We ordered the smoked marlin tostadas and jumbo shrimp both of which were great! Would warn that the smoked marlin is rich but the shrimp had great seasoning and cooked to perfection. Our service to the restaurant via water taxi was easy and really appreciated the quality of service from our server when we got there. What made it even more special was that we got to walk to the other beaches after lunch and take a later water taxi back to the harbor later in the day which made the whole experience fantastic. read more

Beautiful ambiance, excellent service, tasty drinks, and delicious food. You need a reservation and need to take a water taxi to the restaurant, but well worth it. After a quick boat ride, we were immediately greeted and seated with a great view of the ocean. Ordered very tasty and fresh margaritas and mango daiquiris. As our appetizer, we ordered the smoked marlin tostadas which were amazingly delicious. Ordered the grilled octopus and mahi mahi for our entrees and was not disappointed. Everything we drank and ate was exceptional. After lunch, we enjoyed the private beach as we waited for the water taxi to take us back to the pier. One side note, take a trip to the open air restroom, very interesting yet serene. The entire afternoon was a wonderful experience! A must do in Puerto Vallarta. read more

Ocean Grill is a fantastic restaurant just outside of Boca, an easy bus ride from PV. They have three seatings and only accept reservations. The restaurant is accessible via boat or a 45 minute hike from Boca. The food is fantastic, we had the octopus and burger. A burger isn't normally something I'd order in Mexico but it looked too good not to try. Glad I did though I'd definitely go with a more traditional dish next time. The octopus was perfectly cooked and a real treat for the taste buds. Ocean Grill also has the best margarita I've ever had. I can't wait to work on replicating them at home. read more

I'm not sure why this place has such great reviews. To us, it was a complete tourist trap with an expensive water taxi ride and expensive food that ended up being the most underwhelming meal of our entire vacation. Pretty views and cute dogs, sure. Not a place I would recommend going out of your way for by any means. read more
