The Sawtelle location popped off last year and a lot of friends recommended it, so I was excited to try without the wait! Came by the soft opening twice to solidify my impression. It's a tiny shop and rarely had anyone in the several times I passed by it (I work out a block away). They have 2 samples of their most popular drinks set up: -Champion milk tea (red oolong milk tea with cream top) with wintermelon silk boba -yuzu osmanthus tea with jasmine silk boba When I tried the champion milk tea sample it was not that good, and tasted off, but when I ordered it (25% sweet with oat milk, with the regular cream top that was missing from the sample), it was REALLY GOOD! I liked the yuzu osmanthus. I think since I got the jasmine silk boba, that flavor overpowered any osmanthus flavor. The silk boba is a cross between a jelly and a mochi. It's an interesting texture and I do like the jasmine infusion. Overall impression of their 2 most popular drinks was great. They are pretty pricy for a standard size, about $8+ with milk substitution and topping. Parking is $1 for 2 hours in the parking structure on the block, I believe it's called schoolhouse. read more

Parking was a hassle and we could only secure a spot in a parking garage where we paid $11... for less than 45 minutes being there. There was a bit of a line out the door but it went by quick. It's a really small interior so it was crammed when people had to wait inside for their drinks. Idk if I got the wrong drink but I was really disappointed as it tasted like any other typical chain boba place like its boba time. I got the yuzu osmanthus drink because they gave out samples of it. The sample somehow tasted better than my actual drink. I'm sad because I've heard good reviews so maybe it's just the drink I ordered? But on the menu, my drink was one of the more popular options. The cashier was super informative and helpful when it came to explaining every single tea base and whether if it was on the stronger side or milder and sweeter side. what we got: - yuzu osmanthus w/ wintermelon silk boba ($7.50) - champion milk tea (red oolong milk tea) w/ wintermelon silk boba ($9.00) - the tea quality was so good and also very fragrant. Ok sorry, I don't tend to give reviews lower than 4 stars, maybe I have to give them another chance! But I think their prices are a bit too high even with high quality and strong tea drinks. Chapresso uses the same pressed tea method with tea flavor for less $$ and toro tea's variety and tapiochi outshine odd one out's menu and silk boba. My drink was 30% sweet but was still too sweet that it covered the taste of the tea. There is minimal seating inside, but workers were nice and they had samples to try. Though again, Toro and Chapresso do the same thing, and they're both located in Pasadena. Considering the high standard and variety of drinks in the SGV, I don't think this place stands out for me. I visited Odd One Out Tea this past Saturday with a few friends, and overall, it was a great experience! The staff was friendly and offered samples of both the Champion Milk Tea and the Yuzu Osmanthus with their jasmine silk boba. The silk boba is unique--not as crunchy as agar boba but not as chewy as regular boba. The Yuzu Osmanthus was fragrant and refreshing, but next time I would probably go for 25% sweetness. The Champion Milk Tea was also really good--strong tea flavor with a nice aroma that wasn't oversteeped, a nice balance of milk and tea. I ended up ordering the Wintermelon Lemon with wintermelon silk boba instead, and it did not disappoint! The combination of the sweetness from the wintermelon and the tartness from the lemon was spot-on. My total for two drinks came to about $17, so it's on the pricier side, but honestly, the quality of the tea and the silk boba make it totally worth it. Odd One Out is located right next to Beard Papa's and Blue Bottle Coffee, and there's a parking garage nearby that charges $1 for 2 hours. read more

I am a HUGE fan of Odd One Out. Dare I say it's the best boba shop in LA? Yes in my opinion. You genuinely can't go wrong with anything on their menu. They use super high quality teas, have multiple milk options, AND they make their toppings in house. We ordered 6 drinks to try and every single one of them were bangers. The teas have such a strong aroma and flavor. My personal favorites are the Iron Buddha and the Jasmine. The Iron Buddha as a deep tea taste and the Jasmine is very aromatic and floral. I get 0% sugar which is perfect but I will say they gave us samples of drinks at 80% and it wasn't sweet at all. An honorable mention is the Hokkaido Soba -- it's super unique and has the signature toffee flavor but it's definitely natural to the tea leaves rather than a syrup. When it comes to the toppings we tried the jasmine silk boba, winter melon silk boba, and coconut almond jelly. They were all sooooooo tasty but I would say my personal favorite is the jasmine silk boba. It's a mix of tapioca and agar so it has a super great texture and it's unlike any topping I've had before. It also has a really strong tea flavor. Because I genuinely believe that everything on this menu is tasty. It just depends on personal preference/what you're in the mood for. Ron was at the cashier helping us out while ordering. He took the time to answer all of our questions and you can tell that he's very knowledgeable and gave great recommendations for drink pairings and toppings. So I assume that Odd One Out takes the time to make sure their employees are experts. I would say the closest boba shop to compare is Chi Cha San Chen but the breadth of tea options + the unique toppings really pull Odd One Out on top of the rankings for me. The first time I had it was at the Sawtelle location and I can confidently say that this second location offers the same quality and tastiness of drinks. The store itself is very small with little standing room. They don't have any seating so it's a grab and go type of situation. Odd One Out truly epitomizes its namesake. It is uniquely different from its other boba shop counterparts. We went to the soft opening on 2/1/2025 after a wonderful experience at Sawtelle. We ordered 6 drinks amongst 4 people because the menu is so interesting. The place of origin of the teas are noted and they specialize in milk tea. Their special topping is silk boba which is tapioca flour and agar powder. The silky boba is chewy QQ and infused with jasmine and winter melon. I'm not going to even list our drinks because all of them are amazing and if that's the sampling we did, I would imagine everything else on the menu is delicious. Come experience it for yourself! I love Odd One Out! Their Silk Boba is sooo good and different to what I'm used to at boba places. It's super soft and just slightly chewy - honestly you need to just try it to see what I mean. My current favorite drink is their Yuzu Osmanthus. Their quality of tea here is great and this flavor specifically is so refreshing to me. The staff is really helpful and they were really patient with my family and I when we first came here. Even though the line is usually long it goes by fairly quickly. The inside of the shop is pretty small so if there's a long line it's sometimes better to just wait outside for your drink. Definitely one of my go-to boba spots in Pasadena! read more

I love the yuzu osmanthus tea here with their silken jelly! The drink is citrusy and refreshing and the jelly has an interesting texture that is bouncey but not super chewy. If I were to compare it to another boba store, the jelly is pretty similar to the quality of torotea's. I like how they usually have samples of their tea, and even for the mochi! The store itself is relatively small, but the employees are all super friendly. Definitely one of the boba stores that I would go to when in Old Town Pasadena! read more

My friend and I walked her before dance class because Old Town is quite busy. The staff was really nice and the decor is cute, however, my friend and I were extremely disappointed with the milk tea. We both agreed that the sample batch of the champion milk tea tasted good, so it convinced us to get it. Once we finally tried our drinks, they didn't taste good and the drinks are so expensive. This is an oolong milk tea with a nice roasted, earthy, and slightly nutty flavor. Although it's a little too floral for me, this is probably because I accidentally chose oolong rather than black tea. The sweetness level was perfect for my taste. Other drinks: 1/1. The drink selection is carefully curated with green, oolong, and black pure vs milk teas; "odditea" specialty drinks; and a handful of other drinks. They offer free samples, which is rare and much appreciated, especially because their drinks are quite pricey. Ambiance: 0.5/1. This is a small shop in old town Pasadena with just a couple of chairs by the window to sit and wait for drinks. Parking is pretty difficult and is basically all paid street or garage parking. Service: 1/1. Order at the counter. The workers are very helpful in explaining the differences between each tea's flavor. Drinks come out relatively quickly even when the shop is busy. I would say this is probably the best boba tea option in old town Pasadena. However, I don't think this place is unique or amazing enough for me to drive out there, pay for parking, just to get a cup of tea. Odd One Out, like many new boba shops that are popping up, advertise that they use machines similar to espresso machines to brew their tea. It seems like they've also won some sort of tea brewing award in Taiwan, hence the long line when they first opened up. The shop itself is quite small, with standing room of probably 10 people max. It can get quite cramped, especially since the drink delivery is a bit on the slower side when I visited, since they have to brew each order on the machine and it does take some time. I liked the options they had, and the staff was very friendly and made sure our orders were exactly as we had requested. I think I would find myself back here again if I happen to be in old town Pasadena and craving boba. read more

We first tried Odd One Out Tea at the LA Smorgasburg several years back. They had some interesting flavors that were memorable. We've also been to their spot in Sawtelle but that's quite a drive so we weren't able to visit frequently. It's nice having a location in Pasadena now as that's a bit more accessible for us. If you're a tea lover, I would definitely give this place a try. If you're looking for super sweet and fruity boba...this may not be the place for you. When drinking their drinks, we could tell that the tea base was pretty good. I haven't tried everything yet as I like to stick with what I like. I can say that I'm reminded of how much I enjoy their Champion Milk Tea and the Golden Buddha every time I drink it. Plus, their silk boba is different from the usual tapioca balls found at many other tea spots. The wifey generally enjoys the non-milk teas like the wintermelon lemon. #107 in my Teaholic Diaries. Odd One Out is the latest boba tea shop to open in Old Town Pasadena, with a tiny storefront for ordering to go. The shop specializes in oolong tea, with eight different oolong teas ranging from light to darker roasts. Even the teas that sound like they'd be something else are actually oolong, i.e. the jasmine green, cousin earl grey, and harmony black. Info on some of their oolong variations: The Iron Buddha is a strong roasted oolong typically with a deep woodsy flavor. The Icy Peak is still roasted but tempered in comparison, and was described as an ideal option for those who find the Buddha too strong. The Cousin Earl Grey is an oolong brewed with orange peel and lavender. And the Hokkaido Soba is the non-caffeinated option, roasted with buckwheat. Everything sounded interesting, but after getting suggestions from the employee I went with the champion milk tea, a red oolong milk tea. To be honest, I found the drink rather weak and watered down. I was hoping the tea flavor would be stronger since I was told this is a specialized tea shop and the champion is their signature drink, but alas it was not. I also ordered a wintermelon lemon that was pretty good. But again, for a shop that's supposed to be focused on oolong teas, I do wish I had actually enjoyed my oolong milk tea. I really liked the winter melon jelly topping! I ended up getting their champion milk tea with the winter melon topping. The milk tea tasted freshly brewed and paired well with the topping.
