The waitress was very nice and apologized for being so slow. While we appreciated the apology, the LONG just for drinks wait was still unacceptable. The food was ok I suppose but not great - especially with their over the top prices! We also had to suck up the cost of their credit card/debit card surcharges. While traveling through Idaho for work we stumbled upon this cute little diner. I was excited for the french press coffee and the traditional Aebelskivers. The coffee did not disappoint. We ended up ordering the traditional goulash and potato pancakes, which was plenty big enough to share between my boyfriend and myself. Our server Dafni was cheerful and helpful. The potato pancakes were tasty as was the goulash. I watched what everyone else was being served and it all looked homemade and high quality. I somewhat regret not getting the stuffed French Toast. We used to come here, several years ago. As someone else stated, the recipes have changed and they aren't as good as they used to be. They also charge for everthing...want some more of the blackberry sauce, $.75. I had the sampler plate and it was not nearly as good as it used to be. The potato pancakes weren't done, the abelskivers were so different as to not be what we had gone in for as that was the draw. They look like they are deep fried now and they used to be done in a special cast iron pan specifically for these. I don't think we'll be going back when there are so many other places to try. I think that for the money, there are better places to try. read more

Been visiting Old European in Post Falls since they opened. A lot has change though the quality has remained fairly consistent. Today however I visited and ordered the Hungarian Goulash one of their best dishes in my opinion. Disappointingly the portion size was a fraction of what it had been even a few weeks prior. This could have just been a new cook but the absence of volume and potato's was a little disappointing. I wish they would go back to offering full or half sizes of this dish. If you haven't tried a Danish Aebelskiver, you need to get here today and try one. And then try their homemade raspberry jam. And the potato pancake. We found the Pullman location just by happenstance, and then we came to this location the following day. Dad has declared this the best breakfast and brunch place ever. High praise! He even stopped the owner to talk to him and tell him how awesome the Scandinavian Cake Plate was that we ordered. (It's the perfect way to try several things!) We stopped at Old European on our drive home from Coeur d'Alene to Seattle. We were in a bit of a time crunch, and let our server know that when we sat down...but service was consistently slow during our entire visit. She was extremely nice, and kept apologizing...but made a few mistakes here and there which led to us spending well over an hour eating breakfast. The food was delicious! Great breakfast. I had the Hungarian Goulash Breakfast with a German Potato Pancake and Huckleberry Aebelskivers. And to drink a Sunrise which is raspberry and fresh orange juice. My only change was to have my eggs over easy instead of scrambled in the Goulash mix. All was amazing and wonderful. Great flavors but the Huckleberry Aebelskivers were to die for! Not recommended. Food is just ok while their prices are pretty high. Their hashbrowns are terrible. Mushy and flavorless. Everything else is nothing special. Drinks are WAY over priced. Now, to get to the one star review. They do not treat their employees well. My daughter worked there, ordered dutch babies to take home and eat later. Mind you, then have to pay half for their food. Got home, and it was completely raw in the middle. She texted one of the managers and told her the problem and said she wants a remake next time she works. So next shift she mentions it to the manager and she tell her that there is nothing she can do because it has been a few days. (My daughter only works on weekends because she is still in school) She asked the 2nd manager and she said the same thing. Like what was she supposed to do, have me drive her the next day to get it remade? Both managers refused to remake the food that she paid for that the kitchen undercooked. It would have cost them probably $1.00, if not less. It was the cook's fault and they refused to fix it. Next shift she told the managers she still wants it remade since she texted them as soon as she got home, to which they said they will ask the main manager if they can remake it for her. Mind you, this is a simple "tell the cook to make you a new one" and that's it. The main manager told my daughter that it is the 1st manager's fault that she did not see the text right away, but there is nothing they can do at this point. REALLY??? I am just appalled that they would not take care of their employees, especially when they messed up. Not a good company and not worth your money to eat there. Go next door to Dueling Iron. Their food is really good, their selection is much much bigger, and their prices are more reasonable. read more

What a great experience! We had heard about Old European and decided to give it a shot. It wasn't at all impressive at first, it had kind of a Denny's vibe, but as soon as we were seated that old world charm started to shine through. First, our waitress was just fantastic, ask for Heather, but I'm guessing they're all great. Take the time to read the menu, it's filled with stories of the menu items and about the history of the family. The food is delicious, although it's a little carb-heavy. We visited Old European for breakfast in June, 2018. Old European is a large, bright, and airy dining room. The combination of numerous windows and a large number of hanging ceiling lights almost required sunglasses on this sunny morning. The room could probably accommodate well over 100 customers in a mix of booths and tables. In the middle of the room was a good sized staging area with counter seating where the many servers poured fresh squeezed orange juice, prepared coffee, and received the food orders from the kitchen. Canned music played in the background. It wasn't Mozart or Liszt which you might expect from a restaurant called Old Europe but a soundtrack that included Yakety Sax by Boots Randolph. We opted for a booth which had business class comfort. The place was also impeccably clean. I thought that if any food ended up on the floor I might give serious consideration to re-plating the item. There wasn't anything in the room that imparted a sense of "Old" Europe except for maybe some of the customers. It was more like "Modern" Europe with a touch of Denny's. There was some wall art scattered throughout that did relate to cultures across the pond. Upon entering the restaurant we were provided with menus, or should I say weighty storybooks of European Union breakfast foods. There were six large pages of breakfast items with detailed descriptions and some family history pertaining to certain dishes. It looked like it might take until lunchtime before I finished reading this breakfast menu. In addition to the usual hot cakes, french toast, and omelets there was a hodgepodge of dishes that would make most NATO soldiers happy: German potato pancakes, Swedish crepes, Danish aebelskivers, Dutch babies (that's what the menu said!), and Hungarian goulash. I hadn't realized people ate Hungarian goulash for breakfast, but it seemed that it was the Old European's signature dish. It was described as potatoes mixed with peppers, onions, ham, sausage, bacon, and four eggs topped with cheddar cheese and fresh tomatoes. I wanted to make it back to the car so I passed on the goulash. I am a big fan of rye toast. I read with excitement that the Organic Black Russian Rye Bread was made in house and came with homemade raspberry jam. There was even a story in the menu about the owners' ancestors riding wagon trains from Virginia to Iowa. From there the owners' grandparents moved to Montana as homesteaders and because of that the restaurant only uses organic rye flour grown in Montana. The story choked me up a little. I ordered a couple of toasted slices. I also ordered a couple of fried eggs which I placed atop one slice of rye while the other slice received all that could be scraped out of the little tub of raspberry jam. The eggs were perfectly cooked and nicely complemented the wholesome taste of the rye. The other slice, slathered in the raspberry jam was equally as delicious. I wasn't done yet. I was very intrigued by the Danish Aebelskivers. The menu stated that they were hard to describe but then went on to describe them as ball-like pancakes cooked in a special cast iron pan over medium fire. That didn't tell me much. The menu went on to state, and I'm quoting word for word, "These are not fluffy because we use artificial rising agents, they are fluffy because we only use real ingredients." I read that sentence three or four times but could not quite grasp it. Now I went from uninformed to totally confused. The menu also noted that you could get them stuffed with sausage and Havarti cheese. Never mind, I was all in. I was on a roll so to speak, so I ordered an additional batch of Aebelskivers, this time stuffed with blueberries. I couldn't tell if my Aebelskivers were fluffy or not fluffy but I could tell that they were delicious. I especially liked the ones stuffed with sausage and Havarti cheese. I believe I heard our waitress say her name was Courtney and she was fabulous. She certainly understood that the menu was overwhelming, complicated, and time consuming to read and showed remarkable composure during our numerous questions and requests for more time. If patience is a virtue, Courtney was one of the most virtuous waitresses I have met. I wouldn't be surprised if Old European sends their staff off to a week long work retreat where they take classes in "How to Pronounce European Breakfast Items" or "How to Answer Stupid Questions Without Rolling Your Eyes" or "100 Different Ways to Construct a European Breakfast". Courtney knew the menu permutations inside and out and her pronunciation of Aebelskivers was fluid and flawless or at least she did a good job of fooling us. I wish I could give it six stars! Great breakfasts, authentic Hungarian-German-Russian food. And oh the Aebelskievers - plain with syrup, blueberry or stuffed with a spiced German sausage - heaven on a plate. They were out of borscht, so they substituted a flight of soups all of which were delicious. My favorite was the Portuguese. They describe it as a chili but it definitely is not. Our server was prompt, friendly and very helpful. The restaurant was sparkling clean. All the good is made in house except for the real maple syrup. Potatoes shredded freshly every morning for the hash browns and German potato pancakes, house made raspberry jam. Can't wait to go back and try more. read more

Visiting from California, where we have a large selection of good restaurants to choose from, although it can be tough to find a really good breakfast place that serves more than bacon and eggs and unimaginative omelettes. I wasn't expecting to find much in Post Falls, Idaho, but my wife and I were so impressed with Old European that we ate breakfast there every morning of our short stay. The aebelskivers (sp?) were something I'd never had before. We had the ones filled with blueberries and they were terrific; not overly sweet, either. A few people we ate with commented that they wish they served "real" maple syrup, and it's surprising they didn't, given their homemade jam, gourmet coffee from a french press and many other nice surprises. I stuck with omelettes and eggs benedict, both of which were excellent. Their Peri Peri hot sauce was great for folks like me who like to spice up their food a bit. What I was most impressed with was how professional and articulate the waitresses were. I've eaten in some very nice dinner restaurants in cities like Napa, Austin, and San Francisco, where the wait staff was not nearly this good. They never made us feel rushed; it was a very personal touch as they asked if we'd been there before, then explained some of the uniqueness of their menu, including the popular aebelskevers.
