I have been searching for a tasty and authentic Chinese restaurant in the great pheonix area for a few years, and finally here it is. I came to Arizona to work from LA, where you can easily find all kinds of cuisine across the globe, and of course, including Chinese food. Here in Tempe, it was a bit tough to find some places that i really enjoy going. This place opened up rounghly 3 month ago and i was one of the initial customers who noticed it. I definitely do not regret giving it the try at the first. This restaurant is in a clean and well organized plaza close to the ASU campus. The interior furnishing is very modern and fresh. Compared to other Chinese places, Old Town Taste is definitely one of the most spacious ones. Staff is really friendly and helpful. The most important part - the food is AWESOME here! Grew up in China, I can easily tell if the Chef cooks good real Chinese food or not. i have tried so many different dishes on their menu and so far i have not encountered one that i did not like or tasted bad. I usually do not take pictures before eating so i could only find a few of them when i did in my phone, so check them out! Now i visit here on a weekly basis and i really recoommend you to check this place out! oh, by the way, make sure you ask for their "Real" Chinese food menu if you are into Chinese cuisine and willing to try new things! read more

This place double tips and taxes when you order online. Once finishing the online order it defaults to a 15% tip, but you have to pay in person, where they just put in the final online order price then it tips again and also defaults to a 15% tip. On top of that they took twice the given time to prepare the food. read more

We went in for a light dinner for two. We were greeted warmly seated promptly. Chongjing style chicken and shredded potatoes with green chillies were mind-blowing! They were the same authentic taste that you find in Sichuan, China. I took one star away because water was served in a not-so-clean glass and had some rice-like particles in it. Thank god I had my own cup of hot water with me. All in all, you should totally try this place if you're a fam of authentic Sichuan cuisine. read more

This place is the best! My husband and I struggled to find a place to get good szechuan Chinese food in AZ (we are from WA) and this place is even better then our old favorite back home. I gotta give props to restaurants that have kept the same high standards for their food while modifying their business to adjust to our current environment. Due to Covid, Old Town is takeout only but they have added an online ordering system through Yelp and GrubHub to make it easy to place an order if you're not a fluent Mandarin speaker. Our last order was superb, just as you would get in a dine-in experience. The meals were packaged well and good portions for your money. The execution of each dish was near perfection, whether it was the so soft and meltingly tender braised pork belly, to the wonderfully seasoned lotus root. This is probably the best Chinese takeout I've had in a while. For me, good food uplifts my mood and these dishes did deliver on that end. My first time here. Everything we ordered Was good. But my favorite were the boiled fish in oil and Chongqing chicken. Neither was very spicy for us. The fish had great texture and more stew like compared to the boiled fish in water dish. The chongqing chicken was nice and moist and the green beans were crispy. Amount of braised pork belly was a lot... Very tender and has strong five spice or star anise flavored (which I don't care for) but if you like those flavors, definitely try it! Honey walnut a little too sweet. I also really liked the shrimp fried rice. My only negative is for the price, they should have gave gave free white rice with the main dishes... kind of pricey. Such a hidden gem in Tempe. Very authentic Chinese food with friendly staffs. I order Szechuan style chili fish and boiled chicken and intestine, they are both delicately seasoned and prepared. The Szechuan style fish is lightly breaded and cooked to perfection. It's not very salty like those typical Chinese restaurant, and the portion is very very generous. The boiled chicken and fish I ordered is a very tradition Szechuan style dish, and the chefs know their stuff. The meat is tender and the flavor is on spot. Ate here for the first time and got a few things to try. The Szechuan spicy fish was amazing. Each piece was perfectly light and crispy with a spicy, peppery flavor. Big portions, too! The fish flavored eggplant strips were delicious. Soft, succulent eggplant pieces in a sweet, sticky sauce. It was melt in your mouth. Definitely order this if you like eggplant! They also have an 'American Chinese food' part of the menu. My friend ordered chicken and broccoli. The meat and veggies were perfectly cooked and the sauce was addictive. The only thing we had that didn't wow us was the fried rice. It was fairly bland, not much flavor. It was such a contrast to the intense flavor of all the other dishes. They have a huge menu. Very very authentic Chinese food. Service was amazing and the owners were very friendly. Portion was beyond expectations. My friend and I ordered two dishes with rice and we couldn't finish them at all. The mixed veges looked like omurice with rice replaced by veges. Old Town Taste is currently my favorite restaurant in Phoenix. They use very bold and authentic Szechwan style cooking techniques with Chili Peppers, Garlic, and Szechwan Pepper. Out of the ten times I have visited, I have yet to order a dish that isn't out of this world delicious! There are a handful of Szechwan style restaurants locally but this one tops them all. If you enjoy spice, the Chonjing style chicken plate is for you. Loads of chili peppers and flakes are added during cooking and for garnish while the green beans and garlic act as a cooling agent for your tongue. A must try. You can also reduce the heat if you are not brave enough to take on this authentic dish. Their Beef Noodle Soup, Scallion Pancakes, and Sautéed Green Beans are always made to perfection as well. Each time I visit, I am one of the only White/Caucasian customers and have no problem being the minority! I hope you get to venture out to visit Old Town Taste in the near future. Despite trying very hard to trick my pescatarian companion into eating meat by not listing meat as an ingredient in any of their meat-containing dishes, Old Town Taste stole my heart with their excellent renditions of some of my favorite Sichuanese go-tos. Their fried fish with hot pepper was scorching (in both meanings of the word) and piled high with singed flower peppers. They went the extra mile by having green beans scattered through the dish, which kept me from having to order green beans and being able to order... ... the fish-flavored eggplant, which is a super-common dish in China but one I rarely see on American menus. At least not presented with that verbiage. (We have eggplant with garlic sauce, which is sometimes and sometimes not the same thing.) It came out in three 'logs', which the served cut with scissors and turned out to be rolled with ground pork hiding under the skin. This was the first of the hidden meats, but damn, it was good. It just made the skin seem crispy and fatty without adding a whole lot of meaty flavor. The tofu skin with green pepper dish had surprise chicken in it, but was also solid, with lots of noodly tofu and a lot of heat hidden somewhere (not sure where). It wasn't all gloppy like this dish can get - just kind of silky and clean. The meal was pricy for two of us, with our post-tip bill just over $50 with no drinks, but our leftovers did feed us another meal. You definitely don't need to order more than one dish per person. read more

AFS!!! (Asian Food Scene) in Tempe , Yes!! I am happy to find and share this recent addition to the growing AFS here. I first got word about this from a friend after reading an article from Phoenix New Times. So I looked them up and read another great review from AZ Central, food blogger, Dominic Armato (I really enjoy his articles too) and, of course always, my faithful Yelpers. At first walking in, it has an open, bright, atmosphere from the large front windows during the day and the recessed lights at night. Tables spaced apart nicely and booths large enough to seat 6-8. Cute China murals on walls with touches of teal throughout. But what I deeply appreciate is their 'beautifully' posted photos of their dishes on the menu. Afterall, we eat with our eyes, right? The flavors representing familiar and unfamiliar dishes of Sichuan and some familiar of Beijing. After salivating over the menu and dishes buzzing by, we ordered: Braised Pork Belly with preserved vegetables, Mongollian Beef, Lamb with sour cabbage, Minced Beef Soup, Mixed Veg (lotus root/cauliflower) drypot, and their house Fried Rice. And on return visits: Braised Meatballs in brown sauce, Spicy Beef, Saute Lamb with cumin, Braised Eggplant w/ soybean sauce, Green Bean w/ preserved vegetables, Beef Stew, Fried Dumplings, and Chinese Lettuce w/ garlic (A-choy). All of the dishes are so beautifully prepared, plentiful and absolutely delicious!! My tastebuds were bursting with flavors from the spicy peppers, numbing peppercorns, sour preserved veggies, and umami sauces. You definitely got to try the Braised Pork Belly, Eggplant, diced Green Beans, and the Lamb hotpot (if you like sour). Im returning for those mentioned and to explore more on menu. FYI: currently no alcoholic beverages. And, in general, an odd phenomena, if you have a spicy Sichuan dish and drink 'water' afterwards, the 'Sichuan peppercorns' leave a weird taste lingering on your tongue. read more

We had the Fish flavored eggplant strips, Chongqing spicy chicken, Fried potato with green pepper and eggplant, Lamb with cumin, House special spicy pot, Old town shrimp fried noodles, Dry fried green beans, Bok choy, schezuan style spice fish, and the garlic flavored chicken gristle. The food is definitely expensive for lunch (same meal as dinner), but worth it. We had the spicy fried fish. It was enough for two, huge. The flavor was a combo of spices which hung on my tong. We also had the soy shredded pork. It was really good with the lotus wraps. The only item we did not like was the scallion pancakes, massively greasy. We never take leftovers home but did this time. I'd give this 3.5 stars if I could. In short, I thought that they had some dishes that were delicious and bright and unique while others were just okay. First, I love the menu at old town taste. So much more expansive than a typical American-Chinese restaurant. You can come here and, as an American, be challenged to have an entirely new experience. I really liked the peanut garlic chicken. In my small serving I had multiple whole cooked pieces of garlic. They were delicious. The garlic bok choy was also so fresh, crunchy, and still so savory. The lo mein was disappointing for me. It did have several types of meat but the flavor was nothing impressive. I like a good chewy noodle for lo mein. These were more firm and spaghetti like. The quality of the beef and chicken across our dishes didn't seem high. Other than that, we got delivery and the food deliverer was wearing a mask and was very nice. read more

This is our favorite Chinese place in the area! We come here every 1-2 weeks! Our favorites are the fish flavored eggplant, the sautéed spicy beef, the dry fried green beans, and the spicy fried chicken and fish. We really wish they had dan dan noodles, but the special fried noodles fill my noodle craving pretty well! This is normally one of my favorite secret Chinese spots. I don't feel like a lot of people know they are here. Good Chinese food is hard to come by and they typically don't disappoint. Recently we came in after a long trip for a quick dinner on the way home from the airport. First the water was horrible, tasted like chemicals and i was so thirsty from flying but no wat so could drink it Then the General Tso's chicken was extremely salty. The rest of the food was ok but maybe they were having an off night. It was on the 4th of July so a holiday maybe the regular cook was off. Also this is not a big deal but not a fan of the round chop sticks, I'm a square kind of chopsticks fan. If you are like me, just ask for the to go sticks. We will be back but was a bit disappointed this go round. We typically come about 2-3 times a week. read more

The first taste of their Sichuan style spicy fish convinced me that yes, this is the Sichuan restaurant I've been hoping the Valley would eventually have. The dish was just bursting with umami and "ma la" - the combination of fiery chili peppers and tingly-numbing Sichuan peppercorns that few Chinese restaurants in the Valley can seem to get right. I also ordered egg fried rice which turned out to be a perfect mild complement to the bold flavors of the fish dish. And props to the establishment for having Chinese black vinegar as a standard condiment; it goes very well with fried dishes such as the one I ordered. The staff is very friendly and the interior of the restaurant has a very soothing visual appeal, especially with the canal village murals. Considering the quality and quantity of the food, the service, and the pleasant ambiance, the prices are quite good - not as inexpensive as the standard strip mall Chinese restaurants that are scattered throughout the Valley, but not budget-busting either. read more

Went for lunch at the suggestion of a friend and it was delicious! Had the Spare Ribs Dry Pot. Very fresh and tender - great spice and flavor! It was my first time and the wait staff was extremely friendly in helping me choose a dish - even pulled up some photos on her phone when I couldn't visualize the dish.
