Olive & Thyme is a lovely place for lunch if you have the time to sit down and don't mind spending a bit more (nothing outrageous though). It came highly recommended by coworkers and mostly lived up to expectations. ATMOSPHERE: Everything about this place screams "aesthetically pleasing." It would fit right in in Silverlake or Beverly Grove. The interior is much larger than it looks from outside, with abundant natural light and plenty of tables. There's also bar seating near the ordering counter and coffee bar. You order up front and then seat yourself at a table, where they bring out your food and drinks. Since it's close to the studios, it gets quite busy around lunchtime. I'd recommend coming before 12 to beat the rush. A wall in the back is outfitted with a display of luxe candles, picturesque cookbooks, and other curiosities like cheese curlers. They certainly add to the aesthetic appeal and make for a pretty backdrop, but I wonder if anyone actually buys them since they skew pricey. FOOD: I wasn't blown away by what I ordered, but I'd be curious to return and try other options. For now, I'd say their food is slightly above average and seems to focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients (if that's your thing). The breakfast and lunch menu items aren't terribly inventive, pretty much your standard LA options. Lots of sandwiches and salads with 1 or 2 intriguing ingredients for a twist. Avocados abound. Their dinner menu features more small plates, which I'd be interested in trying. CHICKEN PESTO SANDWICH ($15): This was...ok. I didn't love the combination, though the description sounded appealing: Mary's free-range chicken, roasted bell peppers, pickled fresno chilis, pickled red onions, fresh mozzarella, and pesto mayo on panini-pressed sourdough. I wasn't expecting the large chunks of chicken breast it came with. The large pieces made it unwieldy to eat and I think thinner slices would have worked better. As an aside, this is the third or fourth time I've seen "Mary's free-range chicken" featured on a menu, and I've never been impressed. There was some good flavor from the veggies, but the sandwich overall was dry and would have benefited from more cheese, pesto mayo, or greens. I added some of my kale caesar side ($5 for a small) to the sandwich and it was just right. (It probably helped that the kale caesar is more caesar than kale. I loved it, but keep that in mind if you're looking for something healthy.) BRAISED SHORT RIB SANDWICH ($16): I tried a bite of my coworker's sandwich and it instantly redeemed mine. She got it without caramelized onions, so it was just 3 ingredients: short rib, horseradish creme fraiche, and grilled sourdough. For a sandwich to taste that good with just three ingredients says a lot. The meat was fall-apart tender, the sourdough was perfectly chewy, and they were very generous with the meat and creme fraiche. This is definitely a hefty sandwich, so I'd recommend either sharing it or coming with a big appetite. ICED MATCHA LATTE ($5.50): This was not over-sweetened, as it tends to be at most hipster coffee shops or American interpretations in general. It's made with soy milk by default. I don't usually get soy milk, but it makes for a good match. They also offer a range of espresso drinks that use Intelligentsia coffee, which is always a plus. Our total for 2 came out to around $50 before tip (2 mains, a small side, and 2 drinks), so I'm glad it was a business lunch. Things are not ridiculously priced, but they are slightly more than you'd pay for the same item and portion elsewhere. OVERALL: I'd love to come back to try some different items. It's a great setting with food that's above-average for the area. Service is friendly and polite, and prices aren't unreasonable. PARKING TIP: They validate parking in the connected garage out back: 90 minutes for lunch and 2 hours for dinner. For some odd reason, there is also a valet for $6.75. I have some strong feelings about unnecessary valets in LA, and this is one of those cases. There's a small sign noting the validation option, but you'll see the valet first. If you were to drop by without knowing, it's likely you'd get fed up with street parking, not see the garage validation sign, and end up forking over money for valet. Don't do it. read more

I came here on the recommendation of my Yelp CM Katie B. and I was not dissappointed! I had a little trouble finding it as Yelp took me to their old location which is now Simplethings. I called Olive & Thyme and they directed me to their new location two blocks down the street. The atmosphere is super cute, with lots of little knicknacks such as pigs, cows and chicken figurines around the restaurant. They have a little side area that has a selection of candles and knick knacks for sale. As soon as you walk in the door you pick up a menu and find what you want to order. Then you go stand in line by the baked goods. I went at 2pm on a Saturday and it was mildly busy, no wait. I wanted something on the lighter side and ordered the steak salad for $13. While delicious, it was very filling with the steak to salad ratio being a little more than 50/50. The waiter warned me that the steak was medium rare, which was fine with me. I also ordered a caramel cookie and an oatmeal krispy cookie that were available when I ordered. However, when they brought my salad they told me that they ran out of the caramel cookies and that I needed to order a different one. So I got the the toffee white chocolate chip instead. I thought it was strange that there were cookies available when I ordered, but while waiting for my food they ran out. Get your pastries when you order them, don't wait for your food or they might run out. Steak Salad: Delicious, but very filling. The meat only comes medium rare and is very flavorful and lean. The salad comes with romaine, iceberg and arugula. I had them leave the arugula out of mine as I don't care for the bitter taste. Instead of croutons they use a crusty, crunchy bread that is broken up in the salad. Oatmeal Krispy Cookie: This was my favorite cookie and is their best seller. I can see why people like it so much, it was chewy, but a little too sweet for me. Toffee White Chocolate chip: This cookie was good, but it was really too sweet for me, just a few bites was enough. A lot of people were ordering sandwiches, which looked really good. I would probably get a sandwich next time as that looked like less food than my salad. Reading the other Yelp reviews I thought that this restaurant had only a handful of select dishes. This is not the case, they have a large number of different options besides those seen in most reviews. There just happens to be a few favorites that most peope try. Ok so their lemon turkey sandwich...amazing! They have such fresh, light not at all salty etc. but just right- turkey and the arugula was lightly tossed just right which paired well with the lemon. I also LOVE their sourdough and will almost always order a side of it as toast with butter. My go to salads are the kale if you're in the mood for kale and it pairs very well with the avocado and cheese and pistachios with a more sweet vinaigrette. Fattoush salad is always good- the mint really brings it together with the dressing they use- sometimes I ask for the lemon dressing they have also and will use half of that half of their garlic. This is one of my favorite places to eat when I'm in studio city! The indoor area is so gorgeous and homey, and the food is incredible. My favorite personally is the turkey pesto panini (which they didn't have today...) and the Chinese chicken salad. The Chinese salad is soooo good with just the right amount of peanut sauce, a generous amount of chicken (important!!) and really crispy wontons that just add texture and extra taste. She says the hollandaise was so delish that you could taste the butter. I missed having bread to sop up the sauce. I also had a side of the shaved Brussels sprouts salad. Both the galpal and I had different types of toasts. I got the Prosciutto and Smashed Pea toast. She got the Avocado Burrata one. Hers was delish it seems. Mine was good, a 'lil sweet with the pea seasoning. But nonetheless, different and quite delicious. The mint was a good twist on the toast. Wish the bread was seasoned and not tough to bite into though, t'was very hard to cut. But I can overlook that, since it still tasted good. Soups were hearty, tried a sample of both the veggie lentils and the tomato bisque. I preferred the lentil soup. And the DESSERTS! I liked the frosting on the Salted Caramel cake which had some rice crispies in 'em? For an added crunch. Those macarons are fresher than the ones I've tasted at Bottega! So thank goodness for that. I ended up not eating at Olive & Thyme because while I was trying to figure out how to order (there was no staff person in sight when I entered), two women pushed in ahead of me, flagged down a staff person and engaged in a protracted conversation about their food, the menu, called over other members of their party to talk about the food and the menu, and after 10 minutes I couldn't take that or the piped-in music any more and left.
