I have used this place for several years because the food is decent and it's convenient to where I work but I'm finally throwing in the towel. The folks who answer the phone and manage the place are downright rude. It's always so busy, but it's so damn good. The salads are nice, the tomato-shallot vinaigrette dressing is so good (I'm having spinach salad with grilled chicken and feta as I type). My favorite sandwiches are the Ancho Chili Rubbed Steak on baguette and the Grilled Yellowfin Tuna Salad on seven grain bread. Yummy yummy! let's not talk about the sweets, watching my waist y'all! For inexplicably expensive sandwiches in the SoHo area, I prefer 'Wichcraft. The bread is better, the sandwiches are made fresh, and they have delicious tiny sandwich cookies for $1. Olive's sandwiches are small and a bit sad-looking, although they taste good. There's nothing wrong with them, they just aren't worth $10. However, Olive's does have one thing on 'Wichcraft: Carrot ginger soup. That stuff is delicious, and it comes with a roll and butter. read more

I've only tried the roasted shiitake mushrooms sandwich with roasted tomatoes, cress and herb ricotta on sourdough baguette. It's a good sandwich, not a great sandwich. For $8.71 w/tax I expect a great sandwich. The baguette was very good, nice & crusty. There was a lot of shiitake mushrooms, but they were tough (might even say leathery) and did not have that much flavor. Overall though, the sandwich did have a lot of flavor from the ricotta spread, tomatoes (tasted like sundried) and cress. Not worth $8, I think they're seeing a big profit on that. The staff at the register were busy, but they were unfriendly, might even say rude. Food service is still a service guys, and charging that much for a mushroom and cheese sandwich you should provide it. For a good sandwich in the neighborhood and a better value, I'd recommend Whole Foods on Houston or the Banh mi shop on Broome at Mott. Crosby Connection on Bleecker is also good for italian sandwiches, ingredients are not as gourmet as Olive's though. read more

Every time l go to Olive's, it makes me so happy. l know i'll always find something tasteful, homemade (cookies, lemonade, etc...) and right for the moment. Iced latte (Illy) in the morning, sandwich (my fav is the thursday special with avocado and cheddar), fruit salad, etc... lt's creative, love the presentation, the packaging, the red bench outside. It's a bit pricy (well, it's SOHO, and the products are top of the line). They is usually a long line outside between 12.30 and 2. Yes, some of the food is lovely. If you have endless pockets and patience, do enjoy. But, the food is heinously overpriced. 4.50 for a tiny plain oat meal? No thanks. I was also double charged one time and they yanked me around on the phone instead of resolving the issue, I had to call my bank to have it fixed. Look, Soho is not the foodie capital of New York. This place is one of the few quick and easy sandwich shops in the hood. It's to-go only and it's crazy crowded but it has good and quick food and it's not as expensive as Dean & De Luca. Great cookies, fresh creative sandwiches, good coffee. The cold Asian noodles are also a nice side dish if you get one of their salads. read more

I love Olive's hero. It's my most favorite sandwich and love grabbing one after and arduous day of shopping (a.k.a. shuffling down Prince street arm to arm behind slow poke tourists.) It's a great standard Italian-ish sandwich. Theres usually a line during lunch but go a little bit past lunch and it's a breeze. I've recently had the steak sandwich (they were sold out of heros) and it was not good and tasted like old meat. Coffee is good, sticky buns are awesome. read more

I keep coming back here for the Roasted Shiitake Mushrooms with oven dried tomatoes with cress and herb ricotta on sourdough baguette. It is on the rather expensive side for a sandwich, but I'd pay for it over and over again! (This is rare for me as I'm not a sandwich person at all, let alone a $9 sandwich). It's a good balance of crispy, chewy and bitter. When I finish this sandwich, I always feel refreshed and perfectly satisfied. Definitely a fan. read more

I'll preface my review with this disclosure: I went after 1:45pm on St. Patrick's Day so I never experienced the line problem. The staff seemed friendly and the line moved very quickly, in fact. Now on to the good stuff... I ordered the daily special (Grilled Flank Steak with Grilled Vidalia Onions, Cress, Tomato, and black Pepper Mayo on Seeded Baguette for $9.50) and it was great! The bread wasn't as fresh as I'd hoped and no the sandwich was not made to order. They keep it in a little bin right on the counter (which I'm not sure is entirely hygenic???). And to be perfectly honest, as some other reviewers pointed out earlier, you can certainly get a larger sandwich for the price elsewhere (My sandwich probably would've been $7 plus tax at Lenny's). However, I've been pretty hard pressed to find the flavor combos that I had in my sandwich anywhere else, they didn't skimp on the steak and most importantly everything was prepared well. The steak, the watercress, right down to how much black pepper was in the mayo. These clearly arent your everyday line cooks whipping up lunch. So when you consider the level of talent in the back and the quality of ingredients, that sandwiches are actually pretty cheap (for NYC at least). The fresh fruit cup was also delicious. And that's how Olive's earned my four stars. :) read more

Caveat: I have only gotten a few items from Olive's but here's my review: The only time I really get Olive's is if it is on my company's dime or a nice splurge to myself. But what a splurge! I am not a sandwich person- and especially being vegetarian, its hard to nail a veggie sandwich that doesn't take like an awkward salad between slices of bread- but Olive's is zoo good! Shitaki mushroom?? I never like mushrooms! But they obviously prepare all their ingredients separately and know what goes best with what. Of course there is a line out of the door between the hours of 12-2- but its a tiny store, what do you expect? The line actually moves along quite well, I am very impressed with their quick process, but it is also pretty loud and hectic-- but isn't that the fun of it?? Haha they should have the equivalent of the SOUP NAZI. Ok, well the food is a tad oily, probably not the most skinny of food, but yummy delicious!
