Went there with my family and the food was great as always! Very consistent and so fast! My dad orders there at least once a month and it's one of the best Chinese spots around. Totally impressed by this Chinese restaurant... My cousins from Vegas were visiting and we needed a place to eat... driving down Kapahulu they saw this and requested we stop in... and we're glad we did! Located in the little strip mall south of Leonard's Bakery, and as I recall this use to the an L&L, this joint seats about 40 people max. Though you never no how many people they will allow before a Chinese restaurant turns down a paying customer ;). They have 1 big screen LCD & the restroom is located outside around back of the building... kinda scary at first, but really nothing to be concerned about. The Goods... 1) We started with Scallop Soup and this was done to my liking... hot, thick and not too salty. Seemed more like an egg drop soup, but with scallops added... still a winnah! 2) Ever since Golden Eagle started a dish called Honey Walnut Shrimp, seems that every Chinese restaurant has this wonderful dish. Shrimp was nicely battered, slightly heavier than I'm use to but with the walnuts and mayo like sauce... was still 'broke da mouth' wonderful. 3) Beef Broccoli... this dish had a very unique garlic flavor that we loved very much... I hope I didn't give any the secret ingredient but the garlic really made this classic dish their own! 4) Roast Duck... what can we say... it's Roast Duck and tasted like others we had... I'll do add that this was the saltiest dish we had and I think it's because that's how Roast Duck is done with the sauce encased in the duck for soo long and then released and chopped up... still, the Duck was Ono! 5) Seafood/Vegetable Cake Noodle... Uh, we need 2 orders of this reasonably priced dish cause we totally whacked this before the Honey Walnut Shrimp... This had the cake noodle with the oyster sauce all over with stir fried veggies, shrimp, and squid... this was comfort food right here! 6) Sweet Sour Pork... This was slightly spicy but done right with bell peppers and onions and also a hint of garlic... but I believe pork is the one dish that's really hard to mess up... verdict... Ono! 7) Lastly, the 4 of us had Minute Chicken... and in my experience Minute Chicken is kinda salty... not this one,., softy battered and the usual sauce but this wasn't that salty... in fact, the dish was very tasty and also had a hint of garlic in it... very Ono! Believe it or not, we ate everything and didn't take home anything ;). Our opus were so full and content that we were put in a total state of euphoria after having the meal to cure hunger pains. If you've ever had those days/nights of what to eat and couldn't decide because you wanted that perfect taste in your mouth but didn't quite find it... this is one of those times we actually found that perfect taste! My company even did BYOB and that they ended up taking the rest of that home because they were too busy eating! Rude and ugly personality. First time trying out ordering food she look at me head to toe and scanned my look and looked at my Vitiligo skin discoloration and told me " no I won't make food for you". There was no one else then me and the owner lady and men. Okay it was very very hard to let go what she did to me so I called 911 and police came by. Police was helpful in this situation understood how hurtful this kind. judging people by the look. I didn't argue with the owner when she was giving me ugly personality but I did call 911 for ignorance? I guess. After I came home I searched this restaurant from Google and read feedback and oh my gosh. There was time to time she was being ugly to other few customer especially to single to two person reviewing other negative comments. Don't be feel weak by this kind of person. The last day of my birthday week off in September 2020 made me stop off at On On Chinese restaurant when I was scouting new places to eat. I ended up getting a combination plate B, because that sounded pretty good, instead looking thru the menu. There's always next time. On On Chinese restaurant is a casual restaurant tucked away on the quiet side of Kapahulu Avenue, away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. It's a nice residential restaurant that you can go to any time for cheap eats whenever you feel like it. I ended up here since I wanted to try out new places in the neighborhood and found myself here after having a donut at Leonard's. It was just after 10:30am when I noticed the restaurant and thought about lunch already. Chinese food would be a nice alternative to what I have been having recently. Due to the current COVID pandemic, a fast mask is required upon entering the restaurant. The restaurant itself was fairly large for its size, but small enough to be cozy and intimate, if you were able to dine-in in these uncertain times. It's definitely clean and you can opt in for a dine in scenario, as government protocols can allow. I ended up doing take out here and had my meal at home. For the most part though, On On Chinese restaurant has good assortment of dishes. The quality of the food is there, but it's Chinese food though. I grew up with this stuff. The positives is that many of the entrees are less than $10 each, which is a good thing. The overall experience here at On On Chinese restaurant can be categorized as being super while being casual, good, yet average all at the same time. Chinese cuisine is often a good choice, based on price and On On Chinese restaurant provides that. My experience here lasted about 20 minutes from ordering to pick up. I saw maybe 2-3 tables occupied while I was there, but that's about it. It was eerie, due to the ongoing pandemic. If you are in the area and want to check out a new Chinese restaurant, consider coming down to On On Chinese restaurant on the edge of Kapahulu and check them out. While I can consider them a typical Chinese restaurant with the usual things you'd expect from that kind of establishment, the service here is nice and friendly. I can say that On On Chinese restaurant is all those things but they do have value and quality in the offerings that they serve everyone every day. Pretty sure they do catering too, but call ahead in advance to place your orders or risk waiting 20 minutes like I did for one order. My favorites would be anything from the seafood section of the menu, but often times, it doesn't fit my budget, so I just do beef or chicken and save the good stuff for special occasions. On On Chinese restaurant is located at 909 Kapahulu Avenue in the Kaimuki district of urban Honolulu. Leonard's Bakery is located across the street. They accept major credit cards, which is always a good thing, and cash too. As far as parking goes, they have a private parking lot, which they share with 5 other merchants in the cul de sac. If you are like me, bus routes 13, 14 , and 18/24 come thru the area and stops basically next to the restaurant - in both directions. They have vegetarian options for anyone who want to have a vegetarian option as well. I would recommend the combination plate B, since it was quite delicious and definitely hit the spot after a week off for my birthday. Not sure if they have public Wifi or not though. I was at UH, working at Swensen's Ice Cream next door to On On. Very nice people. They introduced me to deep fried oysters. I fell in love with them then, and still do. Traveling across the country I've always looked for this on the menu but it's hardly there. And when I did find it, it did not come close to matching the hot flavor this morsel gave up. Most of the time they were small. Not On On's. They were very good large sizes. Crack the top, pour a little shoyu to help bring out more flavor and to cool it down. Don't need rice or anything else. I use to special order this by the whole take out container. I couldn't stop eating them. I can truthfully say the myth is not true. hehehehe Now, returning to the islands, my craving shot through the roof. I couldn't wait to get into the area. I finally did. It was afternoon after the lunch crowd. We walked in. Nice to see everything was nice, clean and cozy. It's been a long time, decades, since I've been here and didn't recognize anyone. Looking over the menu I found what I was looking for and ordered. Just that. Nothing else. It didn't take too long for it to be brought out. Our waters were filled. It was a hot day and happy to be inside with AC. I crack the top, pour the shoyu, took the bite which was half of the battered oyster. I was so excited I forgot to take a pic. The size looked the same as I remembered and then I thought maybe they started using smaller size oysters. None of that. It was so delicious just as I remembered. We live in the Kaimuki area & since Duk Kee went through new ownership, we are trying to find a new Chinese restaurant in the area. So we decided to try On On in Kapahulu. We ordered 'take-out' & our food was ready on time. The restaurant wasn't very crowded. A large group at one table & a small local family at the other. The larger group appeared to be the restaurant workers & some family. There was ample parking available. This is my review of the food that we ordered (Total = $77 + tip).: Minute Chicken Cake Noodle: Not over-salty like some others. The noodles were cooked well with abundant pieces of chicken, but the chicken could have been cut smaller. Also the chicken wasn't tender, a bit too dry and lacking flavor. Kau Yuk: Taste was just okay, nothing special. Slices of pork was inconsistent, some pieces were hard & dry. Fried Oysters: The breaded crusts was good, however the Oysters were on the dryer side, not succulent. Stuff Tofu: Actually the best dish of the night. Okay, not bad. Ong Choi w/ Bean Curd: There were strange bits/shapes of unidentifiable things mixed into the veges, maybe that was the bean curd, but it made the dish look unappetizing. Dish had good flavor. After previously reading other online reviews, we wanted to give On On a try. Can't understand why most of their proteins were dry and hard. This is a NO rating. My family has eaten at this restaurant before but it was my first time. 3/25/24 right before 8pm, there were 1 other table occupied and a couple walking out when the 7 of us walked into the restaurant and all stood inside by the entrance waiting to be seated. The hostess lady was stood across from us by their kitchen door. The hostess looked at us and did not verbally welcome or give us a smile, no greeting whatsoever. She then turned and entered the kitchen for a few seconds and came back out. She then looks at us again with no smile or greeting and turns away to do something. She finally approaches us and asks how many, we said 7. Again no warm greeting or smile, she directed us to our table and we sat down. None of us in my party said anything of the hostess's rudeness but obviously my party received the same perception from the hostess because next thing my son and his wife said, "let's go somewhere else." We all stood up and my son tells the hostess, "no need, we are leaving." Only then did the hostess smile so big and asked, "how come?" We exited and left. If the hostess doesn't realize it was because of her poor customer service that prompted us to leave, that's not a good thing. We went elsewhere where and spent a little over $350 for our dinner. Rather than asking us if we were eating here he shouted "this is only their parking and to park across the street." I've never had a bad meal from here. I've eaten in once, the restaurant was super clean and a few fellow Chinese food lovers dined at other tables. I noticed they make accommodations for larger parties in the small space. My favorite item is the sweet and sour fish and their crispy gaugee!!! Omg!! Oh oh wait also their steamed garlic buttered broccoli (not on the menu), gahhh I've never had a bad dish served from here. The owners are really nice and the young lady who works, Donna, is very personable. It has been a long time since I've eaten there. Ever since this pandemic happened this restaurant was very good and let me order the lemon chicken and gau gee. Also in order to use your debit or credit card, gotta spend a minimum amount of 10.00 or more, which i did. In these tough times they will give you a 10% off your take out orders when you pick it up. In this case the cashier was very happy with the take out orders and trust and believe when they give 10% they will do it because everywhere people who are having difficulty with getting food and things, and it does help. Hopefully if i return to this location i would like to see crispy won ton..i love crispy won ton but I think it's good to eat gau gee once in a blue moon. So support this restaurant and take advantage of the 10-15% offer when you carry out your orders! read more

Hands down, my favorite Chinese restaurant in town. Love their minute chicken cake noodle, egg fu yong, and crispy gau gee. My teenager can eat a whole plate of char siu fried rice on their own, it's that good. They also love the lemon chicken. We like their bao buns and so far, the kau yuk was the best to put in it, but we can eat them plain. read more

Came in 30 mins before closing because we were starving. We came all the way down for Malasadas, but eventually came across a unique and very welcoming On On Chinese restaurant. Coming from LA to Hawaii to enjoy a bit of fried rice, super crispy orange peel chicken and the Lo mein which was super delicious! The owner Jamie has outstanding customer service and allowed us to stay in a little past closing hours to enjoy our food. The lady stops and yells at me," I have to get the paper to write on. Why you so angry?" Then the husband says we can leave if we aren't happy. So we left. On Sunday May 14th while rushing around deciding where to go to pick up dinner for a party of 4 and extra eats on top of that. I drove around for a while. A few minutes later I drove to ON ON Chinese Restaurant thinking they have good food because my BF and I went there a few times however it was never really busy when we went. I walked in and there were 4 people on the right having dinner. Walked further in & there were a couple also having dinner. I proceeded to the front where the Chinese lady stood who's the owner!!! she's been there everytime we went. I stood there for a few & she didn't even look at me or say hi or I'll be with you!! Nothing, like she ignored me standing right there. I waited about another 2 minutes, STILL nothing! She stood there ringing up sales, adding up other things. STILL NO EYE CONTACT! NOTHING! As though I was invisible!!! Stressed or had a bad day! Whatever it was that made her ignore me!! CUSTOMER SERVICE SHE DOESN'T HAVE!! AT ALL!! I haven't been to On On since back in the day when it used to be located on McCully. The new location on Kapahulu is about 1/4 or less of the size of the old location, but it was almost full when we got there to dine the other night. [10/21--per Lyla D., this is not a new location, but their original one--thanks, Lyla!!] It seems to have a good following, based on the folks who were there--they all seemed like regulars. The young lady who served us was really efficient, personable, and friendly. My Dad had a lot of questions, since it was his first time there. The food was tasty, but not too salty. Cantonese style sea bass (in shoyu with ginger and green onions) can get overly salty, but theirs was not. The fish also had a really nice, flaky texture. I really enjoyed the salt & pepper eggplant, as well. We also ordered mustard cabbage with chicken. The texture of the chicken was hit or miss--my pieces were very tender, but my Mom got some chewy pieces. On On is definitely a repeat for us, but maybe just for takeout... There's just one drawback to On On--the restroom is located at the back of the building, and to get there, you have to walk all the way around the front of the property, past a stairway with a bus stop in front of it (there were many people sitting on the steps, waiting for the bus). It's about a 1/2 block walk to the restroom, that's in an isolated driveway connected to the building. The buddy system is a good idea if you need to use the facilities--even the server suggested to my Dad that I accompany him to the restroom, and I'm very glad I did. When we drove back from our home 20 min to OnOn to get our correct order the rude Chinese lady said we our original order was cheaper than what I paid (since I paid for the wrong order originally) but I wasn't getting a refund because she let me keep the noodles I had at home that wasn't part of my order!! For the most part, the food here wasn't bad. it was certainly edible, and some of it was actually really good. I really liked their pork hash (thinner patty than usual and very flavorful) and their roast duck was awesome. The gau gee mein (too few gau gee) and the egg fu yong (bland) were okay. The minute chicken cake noodle was really bad. The cake noodle were too hard, the gravy was bland and it was cold. The service was slow. The rice came only after we had eaten half of the food. The entrees were brought out at differing times, resulting in us eating all of one entree at a time. Next time, I'm craving chop suey type food, I'll go somewhere else. read more
