Kalua pork/chicken katsu combo with rice and macaroni salad
    Brenda D.

I had a craving for Hawaiian macaroni salad so I went to Ono Hawaiian BBQ. It wasn't busy at all. The place was very clean. After looking over the menu, I wanted to have the kalua pork. I asked the cashier what other item she recommended as a combo, which comes with steamed cabbage and broccoli and, of course, steamed rice. She offered the chicken katsu because it was popular. Since it took some time for my food, I figured that it was cooked to order, which is a good sign. I took my lunch back to work because I wasn't that hungry at the time, but I did have some macaroni salad. I had my lunch an hour or so later. I was thinking that the katsu was going to be dry since it had been sitting in the container. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't, it was very tender, even after warming it up in the microwave for a short time. Ohhh, the kalua pork and macaroni salad were on point! So good! I'll have to try their spam musubi next time, one of my favorites.

Keiki meal is where it's at. It's perfect for my baby. It has the right amount of meat and rice. The chicken katsu came with 5 pieces of katsu and steamed broccoli. Also my baby couldn't eat it all so I got the left overs.

I like that Ono has a mini meal because I don't like getting a lot of food that I can't finish. Their chicken katsu always hits the spot especially with their teriyaki sauce. Every time I go in I get helped right away and never have to wait too long for my food. The girls at the cashier are polite and friendly. I do think the restaurant can do a little better at keeping there tables clean.

The plastic I found in my meal and gagged on (I cleaned it for the picture )

If I could give it a 0 I would, I ordered pick up of the combo plate with the Mac salad and inside was a huge piece of plastic that I gagged on lol... they comped just the plate lmaoo they should of done my whole meal and given me a gift card and I still wouldn't go back... I should of just found the closest L and L (you can see in my photo the plastic piece after I washed it)

Had the BBQ mix with katsu. Katsu was good, but the beef rib and sliced beef were ok, kinda chewy. Pricey for just 1 rib ($17). Staff looked like they didn't like being there - no greetings, no smile. The place has large clean seating area, bathroom could be cleaned, and had ample parking.

My hub likes their Beef ribs, and I like their Macaroni salad. Nowadays, eating out is quite expensive, but theirs isn't. Katsu, I don't recommend, unless you re-cook it to make Katsu Don. That way, you can omit deep frying part. Also, I LOVE their ginger? salad dressing, KILLER. B App!

Consistency is key. As far as my personal experience, this location has always been consistent with their quailty. Reading through some of the other reviews on here, it seems like maybe some of the stresses and pressures of the recent pandemic had some influence on some other yelper's experiences. . However, I feel like given the crazy circumstances restaurants faced and had to figure out how to navigate, some grace should be given to the employees and business owners during it all. . Personally I never noticed the rudeness that others have mentioned. Maybe I got lucky, or maybe I just appreciated the fact that there were businesses that did the best they could to stay open during such a weird time in our history. . All that said, I've always been happy with the quality of the food and the portion sizes. One dish in particular that I enjoy is their island fire chicken. Prior to discovering Ono, I used to enjoy a similar spicy chicken dish from a (relatively) nearby restaurant in San Jose, but their quality kept slipping and slipping to the point where I stopped going. (And that was pre 2020) Once I tried the island fire chicken from Ono, I had a new spot to get some great spicy chicken and haven't looked back! The other chicken options, pork, and beef have all been really tasty as well. . Don't forget to try their appetizers too! . My only reason for dropping one star is that when we get the aloha plates, the salad often doesn't have much dressing on it. However, the times when we ask for (and pay for) an extra to-go cup of dressing, the salads magically have an abundance of dressing on them. It's like entering the land flowing with milk and honey, but in this case it's their house dressing. (Don't get me wrong, the dressing tastes great) I just wish it was more consistent. The times we forget to ask for extra dressing we're often a little bummed at the lack of dressing. But you know what, that's a pretty small issue to have when everything else has held up and always turns out great.

The beef was tough and chewy. I spit out most of it as inedible. The rice was clumpy and unappetizing.

Get your order in for Thanksgiving - they'll be open until 2pm!…read more My family and I have been here a couple of times and loved each time! All of the dishes were so delicious, portions are generous, and service is friendly! Dining area is clean and welcoming. We've had late lunches here and our favorites are: lechon belly; lumpia shanghai; sinigang; adobo; beef stew; pancit; longanisa; dinaguan; leche flan...yes - everything we've had is so good that I can't pick just a couple favorites! They are cash only but there is an ATM.

We were greeted with a smile by the owner, treated like royalty with a clean table, bottled waters, and pure joy. I was unable to eat anything due to a food allergy (they use soybean oil), but I recommend this restaurant for everyone who can eat the food safely. The owner prepared a plate with our Loved One's favorite dishes - she was HI-Japanese - so these were her 'comfort foods'. The dishes sampled were the ones we chose for the event. They included Pancet (meat & veg) and Fried Lumpia. We paid after our tasting & made arrangements for a 3rd party to pick up the dishes on the day of the event. Guests & family raved about the food. It was presented nicely and there was plenty for our large group. We send our gratitude to the owner & his attentive staff for providing exemplary customer service & food. Pick up was easy & everything was packaged for safe transport in a car. Some notes about the restaurant: It's located in a strip mall with ample parking. The place is practically spotless. The owner never stopped cleaning. Restaurant owners & managers, take note!! The menu is simple, but hearty and flavorful (according to my friend). If you're lucky, the dishwasher will serenade you as he works!!

Given the short…read moretimeframe and large order size, they delivered everything quickly while serving great quality food. The service was fast, organized and the food was consistently great. If you're looking for a catering food truck for a small lunch window that delivers high quality and very quick service, I HIGHLY recommend Fire and Rice. Their Hawaiian Asian fusion menu is unique and stands out compared to other Asian or poke trucks I've tried. The garlic shoyu chicken and tuna poke were my personal favorites. I tried some of my coworkers garlic shrimp & Miso tofu too...surprisingly pretty GOOD! With inflation being what it is, their food is absolutely worth the price, and they were also flexible and willing to work within our reasonable budget. I can't recommend them enough. For catering inquiries, It was a little difficult getting them on the phone so we played phone tag a lot. I suggest texting or emailing Micah or Jessica for the quickest response, as they're often busy on the truck or during service.

Final Thoughts: 4.33/5…read more They were our caterer for a work party. This is a food truck and they seem to have everything ready to be served to us. Asian fusion foods are typically my go-to choice and so I was very excited that they were providing us food today. Food: Garlic Fried Chicken Bowl: 4.3/5 The sauce on this is divine with the chicken. It's like an unagi sauce with garlic in it. It has some saltiness, sweetness, and that umami flavor. Garlic taste and scent is present, but not too overpowering, which I really enjoyed. That flavor is great, but some places really overdo it for me. Just a personal preference though. For the chicken itself, it's very tender and juicy on the inside and still has some of that nice crunch on the outside. Perhaps this is because the cut of meat is the chicken thigh. It's not super crispy because I don't believe this is being fried to order for us. Seems to be food held in a warmer until its ordered. Kimchi was the side that they had provided with this dish and I am here for that. Some people aren't the biggest fan of this and I saw that from the looks my coworkers gave it. Personally, very much enjoyed it though. That sourness and spice from the kimchi just balances out this bowl really well. The veggies are nice and crispy. Gives it that freshness. Also, very slight detail and addition, but I always enjoy the sesame seeds and furikake sprinkle as a garnish. There's a nice nuttiness to it that they provide as a simple garnish. Spicy Tuna Poké: 4.0/5 This item was alright. The flavor was also really good, but I did get tired of eating just one type of poke protein. Typically when I go to get poke, it's 2 to 3 scoops of different proteins with various sauces to change up the flavor. I did get tired of this one after a few bites. The flavor of this item was very good though. There's a nice kick from it and the flavor tastes like a mix of kewpie mayo, soy sauce, sriracha, and sugar. Very simple, but you can't go wrong with those flavors. For the side, they added seaweed salad. Again, not your average side dish. Personally, I enjoyed it, but it might not be a common or familiar side dish for other individuals. It has a nice sweetness and nuttiness to it. For texture, there's a nice bite to it, which is ncie since the tuna is very soft and doesn't contribute much to the texture component. Menu: Small Their menu seems quite limited, but again, that is normal for a food truck, I believe. The items they provide do it just fine for me. I appreciate that they also have an option for the vegetarians. The menu we were provided was limited to 4 items, which is fine since the scale of this party wasn't anything too wild and we were able to satisfy everyone with what they provided. --------- Quality: Alright The quality of the food seems OK. It came out within a few minutes for us and I don't think it takes just a few minutes to fry that piece of chicken. I could be wrong though, so no one quote me on that. Just an observation. Not the highest expectations because their limited to the space and area in general. The product they provide is very good though. Overall, for something that has raw seafood in it, it seemed quite fresh and tasty. The items aren't made to order either and it's more assemble and serve to order, but again, they seem to be making it work with the product that they are selling. Price: Estimated Because this was a catering event, I am actually unaware of how much my administrator paid for the food. What I know is that she paid for a certain amount of bowls. From the looks of this item though, I want to estimate the price of each bowl being around $16 to $20 depending on the food item provided. Seems quite average for a bowl of food these days. Service: Quick and fast Because most of the food is already prepared and ready, the interaction with them itself is very limited. They took our order and provided us with the food. Nothing too significant to note and that is to be expected with the food truck. They were very sweet though and explained the menu items to be when I had a question. Ambiance: Simple and cute food truck The design on their food truck is so cute. The riceball is my favorite because it has this very cute face and just looks darling to me. The outside has a simple design with the name and logo on top and then perhaps some of the food items they provide written on the bottom section of the truck. Doesn't seem like anything too fancy, but simplicity is best for me. Location/Parking: Wherever they travel and navigate to Because they're a food truck, they can drive to you, which is really convenient. On Yelp, it states that their located on 36 Commercial Street in downtown, which might be where their truck is serving most of the time. Again, it is a food truck though, so they have the ability to drive to you and travel around to their customers, which is quite convenient is reaching a broader group of people.
