If you give it a few minutes, a spot usually opens up, especially along the nearby residential streets. AMBIANCE ========== We were greeted by Donald and shown to a shaded patio surrounded by local plants. It is a really pleasant setup and a great place to relax with drinks and lunch on a warm LA day. This is the most amazing place. The wife is Danish and a culinary genius. The smoky salmon on the chef's special plate was the most delectable morsel with little bits of crispy maple and gelatinous salmony goodness topped with a silky smooth and creamy sauce. Good amount of variety on the menu, and I ordered the branzino sandwich, which was delicious! The fish had a great texture--crispy skin and tender flesh--and the sandwich was very filling, although definitely a mouthful between the buns, fish, and toppings! The warmth of the staff really set this place apart for me. Our server was very friendly and attentive, even though we were sitting on the patio in the front. To say that this place is a hidden gem is an understatement... The owners opened this unassuming, neighborhood restaurant after a successful catering business. Since it is technically Danish/Scandinavian food, I wasn't sure what to expect. But the owner/server is very passionate about serving the best farm-to-table experience. And was able to recommend what dishes featured the freshest ingredients they had available that day. I tried the shrimp open face sandwich special with tomatoes upon his recommendation. This may have been the freshest produce I've ever had in LA. The tomatoes tasted like they were picked off the vine right there. Bursting with flavor. And only on the menu for a limited time as they were in season. The shrimp was equally as fresh. Almost as if they were caught that day. All served open-faced on a perfectly light buttered, toasted slice of bread. Overall the food is fairly priced for the freshness and quality of the ingredients. Wow! Went here on a whim today for lunch, something casual. We've stumbled across something truly special, not only is Mark is incredibly lovely, but the food is truly spectacular. My husband had the hot dog, which was absolutely incredible (the picture tells you everything you need to know, delish!) and I had two open faced sandwiches - one being the Icelandic Cod (spectacular, the potatoes on top were to die for) and the other being egg salad with pickled herring (also fantastic). In addition to all this, we tried 3 flavors of the "sparkling shrub" drinks which were fabulous and the perfect amount of tartness! A friend asked my wife and I to join him for lunch at this amazing restaurant in West Adams and we're glad we did! I love Danish food but it's difficult to find in Southern California. We started our meal with a delicious and refreshing shrub drink: made with Arkansas apples (apparently the best apples there are); vinegar, and sugar. Yum! My wife had a curry tuna melt sandwich, I had the open face sandwich meal (two sandwiches: gravlax and egg and herring with tomato); and my friend had open face sandwich meal too (branzino and egg and herring). We tried each other's food and they were all amazing sandwiches: very Danish, very fresh ingredients, very well prepared. Just perfect. It reminded me of my visit to Copenhagen. The food was so good we decided to split a "Great Dane Danish hot dog." Indulgent and wonderful. There is only outdoor seating and it's relaxing and chilled and stylish. Based on the waitress and owner knowing many guests' names it's clear they have a lot of regulars. Not surprising --- I'd come back here a lot too if I lived nearby. Wow. Came here on a Saturday morning for brunch because our friend stumbled upon this place on Yelp and we were curious. We ordered five items between the three of us and we were not disappointed. The owner of the restaurant took the time to carefully explain his favorite dishes on the menu and how him and his wife share a passion for food and good ingredients. We ordered the Slow Scramble + Smoked Salmon Brunch, Breakfast BLT, Hakke Bof, The Great Dane Danish Hot Dog, Smorgastarta, and some Joshua Tree cold brews. Everything was delicious but the Breakfast BLT was my favorite. You can tell there was a lot of thought put into every dish. We loved the ambiance of the cafe as well. You know how sometimes you find a place that you hope will replace one that you lost during the pandemic? That was my initial feeling about Open Face Food Shop (OFFS). But it was not true in this case. At first I was a little (enormously) disappointed and then I just settled in for something new. I won't mention the name of the old place we used to go. Some of you may have an idea but as "Comparison is the thief of Joy" it really doesn't matter. "OFFS" name is a trifle misleading. As they even admit "it may say a lot but it doesn't tell the whole story" (apologies should I have made some small misstatement). First of all the influence is Danish (this is what caught my interest in the first place). And even though there is a significant number of "Open Face" items on the menu there are some that don't follow the same theme. The burger is an excellent example. It most certainly comes with a top and was very tasty as my wife will happily attest. I opted for the "Oregon Bay Shrimp Roll". This was very good but... The brioche roll is created out of a very thick piece of toasted bread that is mildly awkward to consume. While I was able to navigate it successfully I generally hope that something that falls into the sandwich category is a little easier to eat. But of course, that's just me. It was quite generous if you like shrimp (I do) and the flavor and texture compared very favorably with an old favorite. The salad that accompanied my shrimp roll was more than worth mentioning (as was the pickled celery). So you know, at this juncture it kind of seems like I might be pushing to come up with a 5 star review. But no. It's a little too soon. There are a few little kinks to work out. The owners are apparently successful caterers who have now decided to make the jump to going "brick & mortar". I say Bravo! to them. They are obviously accomplished professionals. Right now they seem only slightly out of sync. When we showed up on Sunday there was a little confusion as to whether or not we were supposed to order online or if we could be seated and order from a traditional menu. We ended up being seated in a nicely appointed outdoor seating area. Very comfortable it was and we truly enjoyed our meal. We felt both engaged and well cared for. I'm sure we will be back and no doubt I will be revisiting this review. Actually I will very much be looking forward to doing so. "OFFS" is a winner. read more

I have high respect for people who do their job with passion and devotion. This is one of those places. We ordered two Hakke Bofs- open face burgers with a Danish twist. Super size beef patty with caramelized onion and shaved Brussels sprouts. They were $13.50 at this writing but I feel they are the kind of food you'd pay $25 for in an upscale restaurant. They do taste different from Big Macs but if we are truly inclusive, we should be open enough to accept things different than tacos, ramen, and kimchi, right? The only reason for a 4- instead of 5-star review was the sourdough bread was pretty hard - I had to use a steak knife to saw it! Located in La Brea, this hidden gem is a must try for anyone in the area! It was my first time trying Danish/Scandinavian food and it was superb! Our server James provided excellent customer service. For my dish, I ordered the Seafood Smorgastarta and James recommended the lemon sour to pair with it. He checked up frequently to make sure everything was well and even provided us a little contraption to put on our table to keep away the flies! The food was top notch, the shrimp in the sandwich was fresh, the egg salad was creamy, and the smoked salmon was delicious. Every item paired perfectly and complimented each other so that every bite is heavenly! I don't really like tomatoes but the ones here were some of the best ones I've had. What an absolute delight! Came across this place by looking up "Scandinavian food" in Los Angeles on yelp. I'm Norwegian & wanted to introduce my boyfriend to cuisine from my Nordic roots. I was coming here pretty frequently before the pandemic on my lunch break. But my office went remote, and then the pandemic happened, so despite the fact that I lived nearby and really loved the food here... it kind of fell out of my mind. This morning as I contemplated what to have for lunch (or breakfast) I was prepared to eat some of the same ol' same ol', but Yelp surfaced Open Face when I was searching for bleu cheese. Huh! Like an old friend you thought you'd never see again popping up in your "you may know..." on a social network. Let's reconnect! If Mark and Lene didn't remember me after a two year absence, they did a fine job of pretending that they did. Unfortunately the sandwich I used to get religiously, with sirloin steak and bleu cheese, was off the menu. But I conveyed to Mark that I love bleu cheese and after he conveyed that to Lene, she cooked up an open face burger with bleu cheese (and other stuff, I don't know what else, maybe chopped Brussels sprouts) that was OUT OF THIS WORLD. I attached a photo, which doesn't do it justice, because in order for that to happen you'd have to be able to lick the photo and taste the medley of flavors. I like savory, this was every shade of savory flavor in existence all in one amazing burger. Before the burger arrived, I got some coffee (from Joshua Tree?) that was also incredible. Mark also brought me out a little cup of the bleu cheese they have--Mark will tell you all about how it was made by an Argentinian who fell in love with a German woman and had to make bleu cheese as a result (I am missing some steps in the middle of that story, Mark can fill you in). The coffee and the bleu cheese alone could have been an entire breakfast for me, one in which my wife wouldn't want to kiss me for the rest of the day, but that's neither here nor there... Anyhoo, long story short... if you like food, like you REALLY like GOOD food, and people who take good food extremely seriously... you've gotta eat here. The other night my wife and I watched the movie Yesterday, which wasn't very good, but there's a scene where some people thank the main character for re-recording the Beatles' music because they're just glad they can listen to the songs again, they feel that the world is a better place with it out there, and I feel that same sense of reverence for Open Face. This. Place. Is. INCREDIBLE. I can't remember the last time I had such tasty and fresh food. As someone who loves all things Skandi, I had to try this place especially given the rave reviews. I can see why the ratings are so high! The owner was working and spoke with each table. So friendly and welcoming. My waitress was equally friendly and warm. The service was quick, too! And the outdoor dining space is super peaceful. You feel you you're in the country or something even though you're right off of West Adam's. I got the open faced sandwich box with one egg salad and one gravlax with lemon aioli. I was so pleasantly surprised when my dish came. It was so colorful and beautiful. The egg salad was hands down the best I ever had (maybe even better than my dad's, and that's a big statement!). The gravlax was so fresh I swear they just caught it and magically smoked it instantaneously. The bread was great. Note that it is typical Scandinavian style bread, so it's not toasted and a bit grainy. These look small but man they are satisfying! I would probably not get the shrub (drink) again; kind of tasted like vinegar to me, but I can see people who like kombucha really liking it. My boyfriend and I decided to go to this little gem of a restaurant today. BOY, were we surprised at the quality of the food and care that was provided. I had the vegan Bahn Mi and Mark, the owner, gave me the detailed overview of how they prepare the tofu - apparently it took his wife 3 years to perfect! SO YUMMY. Not only that, but he also was so kind enough to fetch a pepper from the garden when I said I loved spicy food. I'm pretty sure the guy who took our order was the owner and he gave us a little background about the place, explained their menu options and made recommendations based on our preferences. The space was adorable, small with lots of potted plants and greenery all around which totally made you forget you are in the middle of LA. The food was delicious, beautiful to look at, and incredibly fresh. The owner mentioned they buy all their produce at the local farmers market and you could definitely taste the difference. This entire neighborhood has something to offer given its changing character. Here is a great corner location. Lena is the chef and her husband is really welcoming and outgoing. He's more than willing to explain their history and your menu options. We loved our Scandinavian hot dog as well as the chicken and egg salad sandwiches.
