Red Fox burger and Cold Brew
    Andrea W.

Met Mark, the owner, his wife is the chef. I've got a few good notes about this place... 1. The menu is awesome. Locally sourced organic ingredients. Colorful plates. Lots of variety. 2. Location is cozy, shaded, and hidden. Good place for a date. 3. Price is really affordable especially considering the quality of the menu. 4. Service is really great. Feel like someone is cooking you food from their home. It's rare to find places like this in LA. 5. I had the Red Fox Cheddar Burger. Not a big burger guy but this one was delicious. 6. The cold brew punches you in the face! Which I'm a big fan of. Mark told me he doesn't water down the cold brew which lots of coffee places do.

Full disclosure: I'm officially a regular at Open Face Food Shop, haha. I'm always excited to be welcomed by Mark, his wife (the amazing Chef) and staff whenever I visit. Their hidden back patio is very welcoming. My favorite items are the various flavors of sparkling shrub drink, branzino dishes, olive oil cake, potatoes, any salmon dishes, and the Virginia ham breakfast sandwich. The ingredients are very fresh, picked straight from the farmer's market. Everything is made from scratch and super creative. I recommend to any friends looking for something new. It's a Danish/SoCal hybrid cuisine.

Beautiful space, wonderful attentive folks here. Very welcoming and sweet people. Food is amazing! This place reminds you of the importance of community, being kind and open to trying something a little different. The food is detailed and thoughtful and dances on your pallet. I originally came here with the idea of a to go order, but was easily influenced to sit and connect. It's a treat to come here, was treated with such consideration. I felt like I was in good company even with strangers.

    Mushroom dish -- amazing!

Stumbled upon this place for brunch a little ago. There is this mushroom dish that's PHENOMENAL and a must. Owner gave us a breakdown of how it's made but I forgot. The mushroom dish was 6/5 stars. So unique Also got this smoked salmon/ steak dish we shared that was only ok. Service is really good. Seating area is small but chill vibes. Relaxed atmosphere

My friend took me here for our first time and it's a little hidden gem. Hidden in the back is a patio for outdoor seating. The restaurant is a small husband and wife operation. The menu is Danish inspired (from the wife). I'm so excited I had the chance to try a Danish meal -- I've only ever had Danish pastries so this was a treat! The hamburger on top of a bed of chopped Brussels sprouts topped with 3 hour caramelized onions was a very enjoyable dish. I ate the whole thing! My friend had the smorgasbord torta that's meant to look like a cake (but is savory). Service was top notch from the owner himself. Overall great experience!

Shrimp open faced sandwich with tomatoes

To say that this place is a hidden gem is an understatement... The owners opened this unassuming, neighborhood restaurant after a successful catering business. Since it is technically Danish/Scandinavian food, I wasn't sure what to expect. But the owner/server is very passionate about serving the best farm-to-table experience. And was able to recommend what dishes featured the freshest ingredients they had available that day. I tried the shrimp open face sandwich special with tomatoes upon his recommendation. This may have been the freshest produce I've ever had in LA. The tomatoes tasted like they were picked off the vine right there. Bursting with flavor. And only on the menu for a limited time as they were in season. The shrimp was equally as fresh. Almost as if they were caught that day. All served open-faced on a perfectly light buttered, toasted slice of bread. Overall the food is fairly priced for the freshness and quality of the ingredients. A must visit if you care about fresh, organic produce. I'm looking forward to trying some of the other dishes on the menu.

I do not have enough words to say how delicious the food is or how lovely we found the service. I did not realize you could eat food that tasted farm fresh without living on one. Everyone I'm eating with is mad we haven't been here sooner and already dreaming up who we'll bring next. I absolutely cannot wait to come back.

Excited to try this little outdoor place for open-faced sandwiches!! Recommended by a friend and my husband and I were hooked. Mark, the proprietor, was very engaging and enthusiastic about the food on offer. The recommended drink Apple Shrub was refreshing. Its three main ingredients are apples, sugar, and vinegar. It wasn't too sweet and acidic. The drink is close to kambucha. The Curry Tuna, Open-Face, and Branzino sandwiches were all excellent with generous portions. Oh yes the Hot Dog was yummy too! If you're in the neighborhood, do drop by in this little place called Open Face!

Open faced sandwiches (cod and egg salad with pickled herring)

Wow! Went here on a whim today for lunch, something casual. We've stumbled across something truly special, not only is Mark is incredibly lovely, but the food is truly spectacular. My husband had the hot dog, which was absolutely incredible (the picture tells you everything you need to know, delish!) and I had two open faced sandwiches - one being the Icelandic Cod (spectacular, the potatoes on top were to die for) and the other being egg salad with pickled herring (also fantastic). In addition to all this, we tried 3 flavors of the "sparkling shrub" drinks which were fabulous and the perfect amount of tartness! Judging by the insane amount of "regulars" we noticed, this place has consistent high standards, and we loved both the food and ambience. Definitely will return, lovely and very special spot!

On the left, a sirloin open face sandwich and a chicken salad sandwich. Potatoes in the middle.

An exquisite experience. Must Must MUST come here. Perfection... the food, the service, the atmosphere. This place is a treasure. Ring the bell at the front windows and the server will appear and escort you to your seat. We had the Danish Sandwiches, the potatoes, a coffee, and 2 Shrubs - one strawberry and one apple. Nothing could be improved about our experience. I will stop here every time I'm in the area. Don't miss their store across the street too. The dining area is outside so you may want to bing a light jacket.

    Katie S.

Incredible food, exceptional hospitality, very cute, open and comfortable outdoor seats in the back with heat lamps or covering if you wish. This neighborhood place is such a gem. The banh mi was so so fresh and the bread was perfect texture. Food here is most definitely made with love. Looking forward to coming back!

Smoked cod and salmon open face sandwiches
    Edward S.

Open Face Food Shop is a Danish restaurant that makes incredible open face sandwiches (smørrebrød). Actually, everything from this kitchen on West Adams is exceedingly delicious. Open face sandwiches have a straightforward construction. They start with a slice of buttered rugbrød, a dense bread with grains and seeds. The bread is then topped with meat, fish, spreads, or cheese. With the Signature Open Face Sandwich Box, you get to choose any two sandwiches. Gravlax: The gravlax is a salmon cured with dill that is smooth and tender like sushi. The salmon is topped with black pepper and a tasty green sauce. There's a beautiful, large, and fresh lettuce leaf, which is crisp with red veins. Asparagus spears, pickled julienned carrots, and pickled pink onions add texture and tanginess. Icelandic Smoked Cod: There's a giant round scoop of smoked cod. The flavor is citrusy and sweet, and the texture is firm with white flaky flesh like crab. There are a couple sliced baby potatoes with a cream sauce and chives. Jammy Cake: If you have room, get the jammy cake. This is an almond cake filled with honey mission fig jam. The texture is like a cross between a cupcake and a muffin. It's extremely moist with crispy bits. The vanilla cream cheese on top is so good you'll start rationing it with every bite. Wash it all down with a Satsuma Mandarin Shrub. It's carbonated water with a little sugar, vinegar, and fruit flavor. Parking: There's plenty of street parking. Seating: You can grab one of the many outdoor tables in the well shaded patio. Even on a 90-degree day in February, it was really comfortable. Ordering: Scan the QR code to look at the menu. Someone will help you with the order soon enough. Service: The owners here are super friendly. They'll take care of anything you need. Mark is really entertaining and has lots of jokes.

Jackson market as a whole in terms of ambiance, variety, taste definitely overtakes bay cities but if you're just talking about comparing food quality sand which to sand which it will be a tough TIE (it's not less) than bay cities. Bay cities is loaded and so is Jackson but bay cities is a little more juicier where the inside sandwich ingredients shine more and you can definitely taste each of the ingredients eg banana peppers meats deli cheese etc. Jackson market's Italian sub had harder bread but I could see like some would argue it's more balanced. It definitely is a little less juicy and even though there were complimentary banana peppers I hardly tasted it at all as it was sprinkled far and few. If you paid for an added topping eg. Jalepenos they were definitely generous with it. Tip: DO NOT get the French baguette toasted as it'll be too hard. The market is fun because it also offers wine selections ($20-$60), not a fun cheese selection like bay cities, pasta salad, bomb tiramisu, has an entire PIZZA OVEN in the back, fun canned drinks including GUAYABA (an aloe tasting like drink), pastries, and chips/snacks. Ambiance - the patio in the back is spacious and big. They don't allow you to bring a computer to work there and the WiFi and service is pretty bad there. Parking - street parking along residential homes 2 subs ($14.99/each), 2 drinks, 1 large chip ($4.95) came out to be around $44. Overall an amazing find. The 10/10 would come back & especially try the pizza. Revolutionary in food taste ? Probably not but revolutionary in enjoyability and spot find? 1000%. Happy munching !

The pizza looked great, but when I picked it up, it was soggy and all the toppings slid off. I ended up having to eat it with a knife and fork. The flavor was good, but I think I would order something else next time.

This location on Wilshire Blvd in Koreatown is the smallest of the three I've visited, with under 10 seats available. It's a compact shop, and most customers opt for takeout. It's a narrow shop, and most customers take their orders to-go. I've previously enjoyed the La Paradiso and La Toscana, with the La Paradiso being my personal favorite. For our first visit with our son, we asked the staff for recommendations, and they suggested either the Venice Beach (Turkey) or the New Yorker (Roast Beef). The staff was incredibly generous, offering a roast beef sample, which our son loved! We also appreciated them providing ice and straws for our water. We ordered the New Yorker ($19.00) with roast beef, porcini cream, tomato, and arugula. The sandwich was thoughtfully cut in half, perfect for sharing. The schiacciata bread boasts a crispy exterior and a soft, chewy interior, which beautifully complements the meats and cheeses. We opted to substitute the porcini cream for mozzarella, which was sliced into perfect bite-sized pieces and tasted incredibly fresh. The roast beef was thinly sliced and tender, the tomatoes were fresh and sliced to perfection, and the arugula added a delightful peppery crunch. It's a well-balanced sandwich and one of the best in LA. We would definitely order it again. A big thank you to the female staff member who expertly cut the meat and offered samples, assisting us in making the perfect choice for my son's sandwich. This experience was truly a positive one for our family. I would definitely return to AAV for the excellent food and service. Given the small size of the shop, takeout is recommended, especially during peak hours. The sandwiches at AAV are so good! Fuggedaboutit!

The staff was rude, which was surprising since we were so excited to finally try this place. The sandwiches we ordered were just okay. I'm not sure if the bread supposed to be served really cold, but ours were, and they just weren't very good. Overall, the experience didn't live up to the hype, and unfortunately, we don't plan on coming back.
