The customer service is a little interesting here. Usually cheerful enough. We keep coming for breakfast and ordering the pancakes (cornmeal or buttermilk, both with fruit), but love the amount of scramble options, unique dishes like the tamales platter or zen breakfast (brown rice and tofu scramble), and european breakfast staples like Muesli. Portions are good and prices are right. BRING CASH. The coffee options (including one with panna) are delightful and outdoor seating is relaxing, though cozy. We've been coming here for many years pre-covid and have never been disappointed. Feeling very excited to come again after so long, we were in fact sadly disappointed by the quality of our meals. Impressed with how quickly the food came out but after realized that it lacked quality. I always order an Avocado scramble with a side of pancakes or French toast depending on my mood. My partner Orders the grande burrito, vegan style. First off we noticed the portions were smaller than usual. My omelette was basically a large pile of scramble tossed with some cheese and a little Avocado. Much smaller than usual and definitely seem there were less eggs used to create it. I figured oh well at least I have French toast. As I cut into my toast it was hard. Barely warmed up as if it had been sitting around and then tossed onto a grill for 2 minutes and then plated. I couldn't believe it. Did they hire a new cook within the time we haven't been here? How could the quality be so bad today. For my partner we ordered the vegan style burrito but there was no tofu scramble in replace of the eggs not were we given the choice. I am hoping that this was just a fluke and they were having an off day. I do hope to give them another chance and that the quality improves. read more

The food here is good, and I have enjoyed the platas verde, avocado scramble, breakfast burritos, and papas locos dishes. The avocado scramble comes with a side of deliciously thick, rosemary toast. If you are a person that likes ketchup with your potatoes, you're not going to get it here. They do have really good, fresh salsa...but that also costs you too (one thing our server forgot to divulge when she asked our group of 6 if we wanted a side of salsa with our potatoes). Their Naked Lounge single-serving drip coffee is delicious (refills cost $1....it's so strong that I can barely make it through one cup anyways!). The skylights and open garage doors fill the building with daylight which is nice. They take cash only, but there is an ATM inside that doesn't charge a surcharge (your bank might though). read more

We first started coming here about 2 months ago, and now we're regulars! We come at least once a week. It's a little on the pricy side, but the quality of the food is worth it. Fresh, local ingredients that are great tasting! All cups of coffee are made individual drip, so you won't get a cup of coffee that has been sitting around for a while. The special pumpkin pancakes are DELICIOUS, and the Rosemary Breakfast is one of our favorites. Service has always been good. Tips: Pancake portions are huge, but you can get just 1 pancake for a few bucks less. They only take cash or checks, but the ATM inside Orphan is free. Orphan just started serving lunch on weekdays. Good place for breakfast. Food was good but nothing to exciting to rave about. Clean and good service. Had the blueberry cornmeal pancakes. My husband had the corn beef hash with potatoes and eggs. The cornmeal pancake was good but the corn beef hash was eh ok. The onion or rosemary herb or whatever they use to flavor the slices of beef is too strong. They overused the ingredient. Tried the honduras coffee first without cream and sugar and it was descent. Maybe I compared it to all the different types of coffee I've tried in the past. I really really like Orphan for BREAKFAST ! it's my favorite breakfast place! it is really healthy and hearty! Yummmm. My favorites are the eggs lulu and the pesto scramble. The lunch is good too! especially the pesto chicken sandwich, okay maybe I just really like pesto. Parking can be bad on the weekend since the parking lot is so full. Make sure to double check if ya'll are parking in the street because there's regulations on days, and times that can get yah a ticket! OH and it's cash only, but they have a ATM inside. read more

My friend LM brought me here for lunch today and what a tasty treat! I had the chicken tacos, which came with a side of black beans, salsa and guacamole. The guacamole was super creamy and tasty, beans flavorful and filling. I really enjoyed the meal and am looking forward to dining here again. LM says that you can't go wrong with anything on the menu, and I'm looking forward to finding out first-hand. Few things to think about when coming here: 1) Much like another one of my fave restaurants (Nopalitos), it's a cash-only establishment. I kind of dig that. Except that I never have cash on me. Sunday breakfast and we were looking for a new place to go. My girlfriend found Orphans on yelp and it had just the right amount of stars and positive reviews for us to try. Even though it was Sunday morning, the wait was short for an inside table. Good service, clean facility and the food arrived quickly. I had the roast beef hash with scrambled eggs and coffee. Both were terrific. The coffee is ground here and arrived steaming hot. The only negative comment I have is they don't have ketchup. Seems pretentious for a breakfast restaurant not to have America's number one condiment. read more

Great breakfast with friends this morning. My steak hash was wonderful, served with a side of creamed horseradish. Eggs over easy were served over crispy rosemary potatoes. Jake had the special. Incredible ( a first at any restaurant) gluten-free pancakes made with grated carrots, nutmeg, brown sugar and a light spread of sour cream. A breakfast and desert rolled into one. Jake's take: AAamazing. Thanks for the gluten free option. Dark roast coffee was very good. Staff was attentive but not overly friendly unless specifically engaged. I just love this place! There's a reason for the wait & it's well worth it. This is not your typical "basic" breakfast but you can order whatever you'd like al a carte, or choose off the menu which you won't be disappointed! My boyfriend loves the breakfast tamales. He refuses to sway from it and I order up a bunch of sides. Everything is FRESH and they are quick even at the busiest times. If you love coffee, the Coffee con Panna is my jam! This is our Sunday spot to relax and look forward to every weekend. PS. They don't serve alcohol (like mimosas), but no biggie! read more

I love breakfast. I could eat it for any meal. I went with a friend for a late one on a Thursday afternoon. The place wasn't busy, which was nice. There's a sign on the door stating they don't take plastic. I would say that's my only negative view of the place, but it's kind of against their mission so it makes sense. Luckily, I had some cash on me. I ordered some green tea, which is pan-fired. It was good. I also ordered the eggs lulu. 3 scrambled eggs with tomatoes, scallions and chunks of cream cheese on a sliced croissant. THAT was so good, I came back 3 days later and ordered it again. It came with a mountain of ridiculously freshly cut, delicious fruit. My friend had the rosemary breakfast. Fresh rosemary bread, potatoes and eggs. She loved it so much that on our second trip, she had it again. It's a small place, and they only do breakfast. However, I'm a big fan of places that do one thing and do it really well. Ok I just have to say some of these reviews are really bummin' me out! I went here for the first time for breakfast at noonish. It was busy but not bad at all. We waited maybe 10 minutes or so but who cares, it was worth it plus there is free wi-fi! I had the banana blackberry pancakes which were great but my bf got the raspberry poppyseed pancakes w/ lemon curd which were AMAZING! Needless to say I'll be going back :) Update: 2/4/11 Had breakfast again at orphans. Had another amazing breakfast!! This time I got the blueberry cornmeal pancakes and I had to try the rosemary bread which is too die for!! I could've just had the bread for breakfast and been happy. As I finish my last slice of leftover French toast from Orphan yesterday afternoon, I just can't resist the urge to write a stellar review for this awesome little breakfast joint. This French toast tastes like what I imagine heaven would taste like! Moist, sweet, melts in your mouth...just amazing! Not to mention, the presentation on this dish is absolutely beautiful. Nice vibe at this place, hip but not off-putting. Reminds me a little bit of the brunch scene in Williamsburg/Brooklyn, for all of you East Coast transplants. The outdoor seating is lovely on a summer day, and Orphan's extensive iced tea menu is the cherry on top. The parking lot is a little bit on the small side, but street parking is readily available if you venture out onto 35th. Just make sure you avoid the M Permit only side! I went for breakfast and had the pesto scramble. I am crazy about pesto, I love all things pesto, but this means I am also very picky about it. The pesto was perfect, the spinach tortilla was fantastic and all of it together with the eggs, spinach and grilled zucchini was phenomenal. We ordered a side of the pork sausage for some protein and that was equally delicious. Friend and I arrived at 10:30 on a Saturday and were seated immediately (a small line developed thereafter). The service was prompt and friendly. I had the breakfast tamales with black beans and 2 eggs, which I ordered sunny side up, and they were done perfectly. The yolks were orange, indicating true free-range layers as their provenance. The tamales and black beans were very good, though perhaps could have used more spice or sauce, as noted by another reviewer. Sides such as salsa and sour cream are extra, and the waiter gently tried to upsell us with sides of bacon or sausage, which was unnecessary. We did order extra butter, which came as an ample serving of good whipped butter, no charge. I tried the banana-blackberry pancakes from my friend's plate and they were among the best pancakes I've had. Absolutely perfect texture with ample fruit. We both had cafe con panna (coffee with a healthy serving of real whipped cream on top). Mine was decaf, which often gets less attention from some cafes and restaurants, but I'm happy to say that the brew was excellent. In short: reasonably priced, delicious breakfast food and coffee with quick service. I hope to make it back! read more

My husband and I tried the Orphan Breakfast House on Mothers day so the place was really packed but the wait was not extremely long so we just walked a little bit in the Mckinley park. And we were seated outside as we requested so I have no complaints at all. I had the eggs and rosemary potatoes with a side of bacon. The potatoes had just the right amount of rosemary on them and the thick cut bacon was very delicious. My husband got the breakfast burrito with a side of fruit. His portion looked like half of my plate but he was happy with it. We also got half a serving of blueberry pancake and it was one of the best I have ever had. We are big black tea drinkers and they had an adequate selection and boiled water ( as opposed to luke warm like in many places) . I would definitely be returning. I however would just like to take half a star off for the name. Independent they wanted mean maybe but that name is a kill joy. read more

This is probably one of the best breakfast places in Sacramento (my opinion)!!! I had the Avocado Scramble with rosemary bread and my partner had the breakfast tamale with eggs over easy. Both dishes were enjoyable! While it seems as though their specialty is cooking everything with rosemary (even the bread, which was amazing!!!) so if you dont like the spice, you wouldnt enjoy this restaurant. Their breakfast potatoes were delicious!!! I asked for ketchup and they said they didnt have it for reasons that they make their own fresh salsa. I am a ketchup Queen so at first I was upset...then when they brought out the salsa it totally made up for it....it was out-of-this-world!!!! The ambiance gave that 'at home' feel and it was very comfortable and clean. We were seated promptly and the food was prepared in record timing (keep in mind that this was a Weds morning, not a rush hr or weekend). I could imagine how packed it would be, say on a Saturday morning, because their breakfast is yummy! The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is because parking is HELL and its cash only (how 90's is that???). With the kind of money they roll in, you would think that they wouldnt mind paying the extra fee to allow their clientele the convenience of using their cards! Love the food at this place! I ordered the Platas Verde with eggs over medium and it Is to die for. All the ingredients tasted really fresh and high quality, and the portion size was very filing. My boyfriend ordered the french toast and said it may have been the best he ever had and he is a french toast fanatic. It said they make their own cinnamon bread for it, and the berry puree I tried was so fresh and delicious. They only serve breakfast so they do a really good job on making the dishes unique; it's clear why it's their specialty. The place is open 365 days a year, which is cool. Paid $11 for the Verde and $12 for the french toast. It was worth it. Got it to go, order was ready within about 10 or 15 mins. Cash only, but they have a free atm on site. Parking lot is small so it can get crazy when busy. Overall though, great place to go for a tasty, good quality breakfast. read more

I really love coming here. It is my new favorite brunch spot. The food is so good and seems Mexican inspired. I have not ordered anything so far that I disliked.
