It was my colleague's last day, celebrating her going on maternity leave. She decided on going to Orphan's; my colleagues rave about this place so I put my trust in their opinions...and they were right! It was "two thumbs up" or five stars if we wanna talk yelp. Also, make sure you are aware of where you park, wouldn't want you to get a ticket; nice thing is they have a map in the restroom with areas marked where you can and cannot park, you can even ask an associate. We were greeted by a couple people once we arrived which was very inviting. My party was already seated so we joined our colleagues after being asked if we needed assistance. The server greeted us starting off with water (self served) and discussed the specials for the day. She took our drink orders then gave us a few minutes to look over the menu. They offer great options! I heard the breakfast is amaze but I decided to go with the Veggie Sandwich off the lunch menu for only $7.95. You have a choice between squaw or rosemary bread served with a side salad. I felt adventurous and tried squaw; which I have to say was very tasty bread (freshly baked daily I was told). It was sweet, with a light syrup taste which reminded me of French toast. I paired it with a beverage called the Grasshopper which is organic pan fired green tea mixed with lemonade for $2.50 which was very refreshing. The service was wonderful and the food is delicious. And you can hear everyone's conversations who is at the table. My friend and I both got the Eggs Lulu, which is a large croissant with egg scramble between the croissant. Nice range of fruits arranged with the croissant. I like how the fruits add a light touch to the heavier egg scramble and croissant combination. There was a lack of check ups from the server after our food was served. She also gave us our receipt and told us to take our time with it. Few minutes later, she practically asked for us to pay for it with the implication that she wanted to clear our table and leave. A tad bit rude! I have nothing but EXTRAORDINARY things to say about this spot. Travis and I come here, ever Sunday. We simply can't get enough. For starters, there is usually a wait. So get there early or ask to sit outside. During the winter you'll be sat immediately since people can't stand the "California cold". Secondly, everything on the menu is fresh, delicious and reasonably priced. CASH ONLY. There is an ATM inside, which is nice if you forget. Watch out for parking also! It's a tight squeeze & they like yo ticket if you're in the residential area The staff is delightful. All their pancakes are to die for. Travis really loves the Rosemary breakfast, and I'm a huge fan of the tamales & the papas loco! We came here today, we sat outside and they forgot about us. We have eaten at Orphans now about 10 times and have tried a series of different dishes. Excellent, I frankly just hold the croissant, add a side of rosemary toast and am totally happy! Went to Orphan this weekend for Brunch and I was surprised at how simplistically enjoyable it was. I ordered the French Toast which may sound a but plain but was arguably the best French toast I've had. It was fluffy, flavorful, and was complimented with a delicious berry purée. This was a few blocks away from an Airbnb place I stayed in and I couldn't have been luckier to have found it. The Zen breakfast was so amazing, I went back the next day just to have it again before I left Sacramento. I did take out both times. The staff were lovely and friendly. Service was quick. Covid restrictions were followed conscientiously. No credit cards, which was fine, especially since their prices are so reasonable. First, had a spectacular server who was funny and sweet and I tipped $23 on a $37 meal for two. She seemed to understand the need for more coffee and conversation. Since she couldn't turn our table and laughed at my "I need 'Dunkin Donuts-style' coffee" jokes, I thought she deserved it. My rosemary scrambled egg breakfast was meh. And, since I'm so pedestrian and like multiple cups of coffee, ketchup (HORROR) and jam/jelly, I felt distracted by my desires. The toast was beautiful and I found the fruit puree okay. Not great. Again, oddly, coffee is not refilled. Server explained brew it cup by cup & the waitress seemed sheepish with the explanation. I felt like a first world elite asking for a second cup for my friend and I... three dollars or not! Breakfast without more coffee?! I thought coffee was this huge trend?! So much so, that they offer it to you in three types at Orphan... but ONLY one cup. Cash-only was a bit of a surprise. So heads up. Super happy they had an onsite ATM. In conclusion, I'm a simple woman who wanted breakfast. As a former server, I felt like the restaurant format was resolute against serving customers' needs, but more to indulge the "I don't have to!" and "we're elite" attitude. Orphan is hands down one of my favorite breakfast places to eat. Their food is great. Service is average. They are always willing to work with my random requests and substitutions, but can be slow at times. You can usually find me and my husband there Sunday mornings after our morning workout. I have had pretty much everything off their menu at least once, and probably closer to four or five times. My go-to is the pesto scramble or papas locos. Their stand-out is definitely their savory cakes. A buttermilk pancake with jalapeños and bacon folded in and garnished with a little cheese. Top it with butter and maple syrup and your tastebuds will dance! You can thank me later. A close second are their rosemary potatoes. Fork tender, yet crispy and charred in all the right places. I ordered the Papas Loco with corn tortillas. If you order this ask for an extra tortilla. The dish was very tasty, and although I thought I had a sweet tooth, this dish was very satisfying. This was kind of a random spot to try today. Had never heard of it. Found it on Yelp. So why not try it! Cute little spot. Here's what we had: French Toast w/ the fruit purée on the side- You get three pieces of French toast. The reason we got the purée on the side is because it was a lot and gets the bread soggy faster. Overall it was good. Avocado Scramble- I was disappointed in this! The first thing I noticed right off the bat was my eggs were very watery! I love avocado but this had way too much avocado! Seemed like there was more avocado and cheese than there was eggs. It comes with 2 slices of rosemary bread which I did not eat because it was not good. Just rosemary and bread! It needed more flavor to it. Lastly it was served with rosemary potatoes. I have to say that the potatoes were cooked perfectly! Soft and crunchy and the same time. BUT! When I asked the waitress for ketchup. They had none! Never been to a breakfast place that serves no ketchup! Potatoes def needed ketchup............. Five Dollar Oatmeal- ordered this for my daughter. I like my oatmeal with lots of flavor. Even though it had brown sugar and apples, still very bland and dry....... Overall, it was ok...... Fabulous food, friendly staff & fast service. We went early today (02/13/2011) and the waiting time was only 10 mins in spite of taking a long time for them to clean up recently freed up tables. To start I had the Brazilian coffee with panna (whipped cream in Italian) and it was awesome! My friend had a specialty tea that was pretty good too :) I find the menu very interesting and excellent for a well trained palate. If you are looking for strong flavors and spices this is not the place for you. All flavors are subtle and very well combined and balanced. I had the artichoke scramble with an extra of fresh basil pesto (suggested by the waitress) and it was really great, rosemary potatoes a bread toast were superb too! 5 starts for the presentation as well. My friend had the French toast and it was also an excellent choice; again the presentation (giving you already the so needed initial visual pleasure) of this dish was outstanding.
