Made a quick stop to pick up some cheese, on my way home from St. Helena. I was unsure of what cheese I had bought before, so I tasted several cheeses. I finally decided on the one I had before. The server said the cheese had a film on it which he said was normal. When I got home I made a board and the cheese smelled and tasted rotten. My wife and I have been here a few times. We didn't want to judge it off just one visit because we understand there are different reasons for how things run. What we love about the shop is the cheese selection. It's solid but not always consistent. Some days the cheese case has a diverse selection, and other days the quality isn't the same. You can tell some cheeses need to be either cleaned or it seems they haven't had a delivery in weeks. You'll notice that some workers are willing to help you find what you're looking for, while others won't even acknowledge you exist. They also have a unique selection of wines, which we appreciate. But honestly, nobody here really knows wine. Maybe one or two can help, but if you have actual questions, you're better off heading to another spot down the street. On certain days, we've had amazing service. There's Willow, who always has a cool sense of style and a great energy about her. She recommended a bunch of cheeses to us and our favorites were the Toma and Manchengo. There's also Lisa, who works the bar during the week and is amazing, but we've never seen her on the weekends. Ralf is easy to talk to and knows a lot about cheese and wine too. They don't sell beer except at the bar, but Ralf suggested which cheeses would pair well with what they had available. He also offers us to try cheeses and showed us different ways to enjoy them. But on the weekends, even though we get that it's busy, the attention to detail REALLY drops. There's one worker in particular, pretty sure his name is Marquis, who we've dealt with a few times, and his attitude is complete trash. We've seen him toss things around like he's having a tantrum, and he's rude to his coworkers, which totally affects the vibe. He's always loud and obnoxiously talking negatively about something. We've also seen how he treats other customers. Sometimes when I ask questions, it feels like I'm bothering him. Like I'm being too needy and he's clearly annoyed. He really needs to grow up. I've worked retail and that's not how you treat guests. His stuck up attitude is the worst and honestly just distasteful. We avoid dealing with him altogether now. If you're going on the weekend, I'd suggest the same. If you're ordering anything to eat at the bar, definitely pay attention to who's making your food. Most of the workers are clean and efficient, but on weekends, it's usually Marquis and this other big guy, and their hygiene is POOR. Their work station is dirty and a mess. But on other days, things seem more organized and clean. Again, inconsistency. There's a woman who works the cheese case on some weekends. Go to her. She's super helpful. Honestly, just avoid the men that exist on the weekends if you want a better experience. If you do decide to order food, we recommend The Situation sandwich and the French Panini. Both are solid choices. Ally helped us last time and she's super helpful, especially if you need to make any changes to your order. A few people we know have told us they love coming here, so it's not a horrible place. But we'd suggest visiting with caution. It could be great but the consistency just isn't there. Again, it really comes down to consistency. Some days the whole team is helpful and present, and their work station reflects that. But on the weekends, you'll feel ignored and could end up having the worst experience ever. Good luck asking questions. You might not even get acknowledged. We feel strongly about supporting small local businesses wherever we travel. Would we recommend you visit? If you're in the area, yes. But it's not worth going out of your way for, especially with how unpredictable the service can be. And here's the part that stings a little. Napa is a destination. People come from all over the world. Even the janitors at Oxbow, who may not speak perfect English, still treat you like a person. Stoped by the Oxbow Cheese And Wine during our sojourn to the Wine Country. I fancy myself a "cheese Connaisseur" since I hail from Europe and consider Cheese a religion not just a abutment. I was pleasantly surprised at the selection of Tagliatelle, Fromager De Affinois and Chèvre. I loaded up on the French "soft" cheeses and called it a day. The cheese merchant was knowledgeable about the wines and cheese pairings. We ordered off the menu and was able to sit at the bar where we were received great service. We ordered the wine below and given a merchants choice of 3 cheeses because we don't eat pork salami or prosciutto. The purple cheese was infused with a grape wine, 2nd cheese an Italian similar to an aged Parmesan, and 3rd a smooth Gouda cheese however I prefer smoked but this was ok. The market is busy with sections of vendors selling various items from the market; items such as fresh produce veggies, to pasta, wine, desserts, chocolate, other food items both cold and hot. It's a nice open market with a chill vibe. I think this is a must in Napa to be able to get various selections of cheeses from Sonoma and cheeses from out of the country. Once we got in, we headed to the far right and grabbed a few drinks while waiting for our table at Hog Island. It was a beautiful day so we sat outside where it was quieter. It was fun catching up, enjoying the afternoon and each other's company. My cousin said she would have liked fresh fruit with the platter rather than dried, whereas I didn't have a real opinion about it. I am a regular customer and I've probably spent $600 here this year. My last visit had me rethinking ever doing business here again. The cashier was incredibly sick. She sounded congested, looked visibly very sick, and was coughing while ringing up customers, the kind of cough where you can hear the gunk in their lungs. I am mystified. Have we evolved at all as a species, or are we doomed? I can't believe that two years into covid, people are still showing up to work that sick, especially in a food handling, public facing position. The management at this place must be terrible if they have sick employees coming into work during a pandemic. Are the employees not allowed sick days? I also regularly notice staff in the wine shop area wearing their masks below their nose. I just can't support a store that refuses to get with the times, both in terms of public health and respecting its employees and customers. There are a million places in Napa to buy wine, and many shops carry fancy cheese and charcuterie (Fatted Calf, Oakville Grocery, Contimo). I typically order their blood orange mimosas and the burrata cheese. It comes with a small baguette and a beautiful burrata cheese mountain topped with a very healthy serving of olive oil and black pepper. It's perfection! I would head straight for the cheese cooler and check out what was there, then go to the cheese sampler area and sample different cheeses. I was amazed at how well-trained the staff were in explaining where the cheese came from and how different cheese is made. I would always try to find the sharpest extra sharp cheddar. The restaurant wrongly accused my husband and I of stealing a bottle wine that is not for sale. My husband literally just sat at a table while waiting for me to come back from the restroom and the waitress accused us of stealing a bottle of wine. I asked for the restaurant to review the security footage to see what happened. They did not want to and kicked us out of the restaurant. Was not a service anyone wished to have. We shared a wee board, two cheese and a meat, with Model Bakery (not Acme mind you) bread, and a order of olives and almonds. Just a snack since we barely finished our coffee prior to coming here. The cheese board came with my absolute favorite, mimolette. Which I didn't even tell the cheese monger was my favorite, but was given anyway. We were also given a Gruyere and some salami. All delicious with our morning beverages. The portions of the olives and almonds was surprisingly generous, I had to make sure it was just one order and not two. We sat right next to the cheese counter so I kept looking over to see what they had, and I love smell of cheese so I was in heaven. This is one of the best cheese shops outside of France. It's small but the folks working here are serious about their cheeses. If you're seeking expert advice on something really rare or if you just have a fun trivia question and want to try to stump the experts, this is your place. Whenever I'm in town I often stop by to check out what's new and to pick up some cheese paper (they sell super high quality packs that I can't seem to find back home). It's also fun to get a little cheese to enjoy during your picnics while visiting wine country. The variety is first class, even for the most hipster of foodies. One of the best kept secrets is that you can purchase an artisanal cheese board (it features 3 different cheeses, nuts, bread, fruit and housemade condiments) and munch on it at a nearby communal table in the main Oxbow dining area. They also have a small menu with an antipasti platter, beef carpaccio, and caprese. Cheese lovers could make an evening of it here. In fact, I'd say this is worthy of going out of your way to visit if you love all things cheese. I've never had the wine here but we always run into employees from local tasting rooms enjoying their grape wares in the evenings, so I am guessing their selection is pretty legit. Tam cheeses with Model Bakery's Epi Baguette, almonds, fruit (sliced apples, raisins), and honey, along with an added charcuterie board of soppressata, prosciutto, olives, and pickles. The board was SO GOOD...and really filling! It was the perfect blend of salty, sweet, and tangy flavors, as well as different textures. I was so happy! We also got a Blood Orange Mimosa and a taste of Enotria Moscato, one of the featured "Stickies" (Australian for "dessert wines"). Both were delicious! Wine Bar selections can be ordered as a taste, glass, 37ml carafe, or wine bar 375ml bottle. Also, the menu is super helpful because it consists of their unique wine profile in which the wines are rated by Type, Perceived Sweetness, Intensity of Flavor, Body, Wood Influence, and Farming Practice to ensure that you are able to find a wine that matches your preference! He looked at us a couple times & totally ignored us! My husband had to call out to him to make him move so we can get to the fridge. We ended up not purchasing from him, thank goodness! The biggest disappointment was when we ordered The Local [cheeses, fruit, nuts & honey]. When we received the plate there was candy corn & corn nuts in lieu of almonds & dried fruit & like 4 pieces of grapes and MOLDY CHEESE! I know cheese can get moldy but WTF! cut it off!!!! With the cost of items here it is by far unacceptable! It will be awhile before I come back here again. So unfortunate & disappointed! read more
