Update: customer service/management is missing the point - and doesn't read the review/complaint... It has nothing to do with being busy or not. If you tell me 20/30/40 minutes the food should be ready then. Secondly, and most important (essentially the entire point of this complaint and what genius burger manager missed) is that their is nothing in place to facilitate picking up online orders. One should not have to wait in the "ordering" line to pick up an online order that should already be made. It creates in awful experience for everyone - there are basically two people in this world, those that cut the line to pick up their online order and therefor making the entire line mad or the respectful person that waits in line and then they leave mad. Also, the people working at P terrys don't even call out the online order as they are ready! You know why - they don't bag the online orders because they vulture from these online orders to feed the people in the drive thru line. The bag for the online order will be sitting on that table behind the cashier for all to see and they don't fill it until I am at the cashier window having waited in the ordering line and easily if not more than doubling my total wait time. Now that is a crime! Bag my food to be ready when I am there and it is on me if I took to long to pick up - I don't want an excuse for why the fries or drink need to wait to be placed with my custom burger that is sitting in the bag behind the cashier (that they can't vulture to someone else). Locations with an "inside" bag it ALL at once every time to be ready on time based on what the online ordering portal stipulates. Hey manager did you even take notice of the location I wrote a review on? Your generic response doesn't come close to understanding how one picks up an online order at this location with essentially one cashier for the non drive thru people. P. Terry's is a great place to go if you are craving that traditional All-American burger! It meets all the criteria's for what you look for in a burger. Tasty patty, fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. The burger is cooked simple and is satisfying. As a recommendation, I would get the Double w/ Cheese with a side of fries. Speaking of the fries, it's whatever at P. Terry's. I found that it lacked seasoning and a crunch that all fries should have. Nonetheless, it's a good pairing with the burger. The restaurant on Lamar has a old fashioned drive-in look to it. The place is usually packed on the weekends so that should say something about the joint and its food. The total for 4 burgers, lots of fries, and an oatmeal cookie came to just over $20. Wow, quite the deal for this Chicagoan! I'm not a burger eater so I took a chance on the veggie burger. I'm also pretty picky when it comes to my veggie burgers (there are only 2 veggie burgers I like in Chicago) but P. Terry's passed the test with flying colors. My only complaints were that the bun on my veggie burger was pretty much grocery store quality. I've been spoiled with pretzel buns at other burger places in Chicago. And they could get a bit more exciting with their cheese choices rather than the American cheese and swiss cheese options. But all minor details when the veggie burger is that delicious. I refrained from ordering my own fries knowing I wouldn't be able to resist eating them all, but then of course I ended up eating all of Kevin N's fries. Thanks Kevin! I also stole a bite of Yelp Dallas's very own Melody L's oatmeal cookie and this buttery dessert is a must as well. I'm almost positive that with 400+ reviews, everything that can possibly be said about this place--positive or negative--has probably already been hashed or rehashed. However, allow me to offer my observations. #1: There is no good explanation for why I haven't been to a P. Terry's before, but there you have it. When I was starving yesterday, I ran across a quick tip proclaiming the burgers to be "every bit as good as In-N-Out and better". For someone who worships In-N-Out, that was simultaneously intriguing, and borderline fighting words. #2: I had no idea the Barton Springs location was a burger "stand", and not a full-fledged restaurant, in the same vein as Mighty Fine. This concept became quite clear when a line of cars snaked around a structure the size of a Short Stop. #3: The menu is straightforward and streamlined. Choose from the basics such as a $2 hamburger all the way up to a double meat combo for $5.60. They also offer a chicken or veggie burger for those so inclined. The prices are some of the most reasonable around, and either at or well below that of the major fast food chains. #4: It didn't take long to get up to the ordering box. I opted for the #3 combo with a double meat cheeseburger, a side of their hand-cut fries. and unsweetened iced tea. $6. #5: Either the transmission was garbled, the kid taking my order was mumbling, or it was a combination of both, but when I asked what came on the burger (mayo, mustard, etc.) I got a grunted response of "No", although what the "No" was referring to is anyone's guess. I finally just thought "Screw it, I'll take whatever they give me". I did notice on the sign, however, that onions, jalapenos, pickles, and a wheat bun are all available upon request. #6: Once I paid, then the waiting game really began. And this little roundabout system they have going on is TIGHT; had I been driving my parent's Jeep Grand Cherokee, I don't know if I could have made the turn without having to back up and re-direct the car so I don't scrape anything. Very awkward to say the least, and a tad claustrophobic. #7: I'm not sure of the Volvo ahead of me requested that they slaughter the cow especially for her, but whatever the hell she ordered took WAY too long to bring to the window. However, their sign advertising that it was "Not Too Late!" to order a homemade butter oatmeal chocolate chip cookie for $1 was not lost on me, and so I did. When life hands you lemons...order a cookie. #8: The girl who handed me the food was very friendly, and seemed more aware than the kid taking the order. Maybe they should swap. #9: The fries came first, and while I was envisioning thick-almost-potato-wedges, they were in reality more shoestring and thin. However, they were fresh, hot, not over-salted, and for the first time in a while I experienced a fry that actually made a crispy sound when I bit into them. #10: The burger was a decent size, and to answer my question about toppings, it came with a P. Terry's version of special sauce that's of course basically a Thousand Island dressing (which I love). The meat was thick and juicy (go ahead, snicker), and the lettuce and tomato were crisp. The meat is all-natural Black Angus beef as well as hormone-free, antibiotic free, and raised on an all-vegetarian diet. I enjoyed the meal very much, and would gladly come here, say, instead of the Jack in the Crack literally across the street. All in all, very satisfying. #11: They offer their nutrition facts chart online. I should never have looked. I'm literally packing my bag for the gym as I type this. #12: P. Terry's is also set apart by its employee philosophy. According to its website, they reveal: "We pay our employees significantly above industry average and not a member of our staff has ever been started on or placed on minimum wage. In fact, our average wage is well over $11.00 an hour." I appreciate an approach like that. Basically, if you want a quality burger without all the gimmicks and only the best ingredients, P. Terry's has got you covered. If you're into social justice and "fair trade" wages for fast food employees, P. Terry's has THEM covered. The best part about this is that they offer all this without blatantly passing the cost along to the consumer, like other establishments are wont to do (*cough* TerraBurger). Their only drawback is the tight quarters and longer wait times. Now, the final question: Is it better than In-N-Out? Not on your life; that was clearly hyperbole on the other reviewer's part. Mouse and I visited P. Terry's for the first time on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon. The lines were long, but the other customers were friendly and chatty. I think I love this place, except for the 1 major con and the limp, not so hot fries. Me loves: 1. Burgers. Burgers in general. These burgers weren't huge. They were just the right size. Not too greasy, not too dry. It was simply a good old-fashioned burger. 2. Dog Friendly. We saw at least 15 other dogs when we were there. Yay! A cute guy (who was way too young for me) with a border collie sat with us. Nice place to pick up the men. 3. OMG. The shakes are delicious! I got strawberry so I could share with Mouse. Soooo good! 4. Dirt cheap. I got a cheeseburger, wheat bun, fries, and regular milkshake for 5.85 tax included. Daaaamn. So cheap that even a graduate student can afford it. Needs some help: 1. The fries. Kind of limp and not even warm. Still yummy because they are fries. Not great though. 2. This place is a grackle world domination meet up location. They are everywhere. I haven't had one attack me yet, but they poop everywhere. There is poop all over the tables. As I was eating, a grackle pooped all over a little boy at the next table. There was screaming from the boy. He freaked. His dad tried to clean it up. The boy continued to scream as if a large scorpion was crawling up his arm. He couldn't finish his burger. Poor thing. P. This place really is a throwback. It's essentially a drive-in restaurant that caters to motorists (kind of like the carhop burger joints that were popular from the 1930s to 50s - well, except, for the fact that it doesn't have the girls on roller skates who serve customers in their cars). Instead, motorists drive by, order at an intercom, and pick up their food at a window (following a familiar drive-thru protocol). However, at one end of the small building (which only houses a kitchen and doesn't have an indoor dining room), there is a window for walk-up customers to place their orders; and, so this distinction solidifies P. Terry's nostalgic feel (since all transactions take place outside of the restaurant itself). Also, to the side of the building, amidst cacti and separated by a metal fence, there is a small outdoor dining area for customers to enjoy their food. Inside the fenced-in area, there is shade to make for a pleasant enough experience (even with the unforgiving temperatures and searing afternoon sun). As long as the presence of countless grackles (those skinny looking crows that are everywhere around these parts) is not an issue; then, all should be fine. Even if not, throwing those hungry scavengers an occasional French fry to keep them at bay isn't the end of the world (despite the posted signs). As for the hamburgers, they're good. The beef, advertised as hormone and antibiotic-free USDA Black Angus, forms a tasty-enough patty (even if the flavor does not rival the best burgers out there). For an inexpensive burger (in that category that features thinly formed patties), P. Terry's certainly beats out national chains like McDonald's and, yes, even In-N-Out. The fries, with a fresh potato flavor, are almost like clones of those served at Five Guys (except here, they are cut smaller). The taste and texture, however, is startlingly similar. Overall, my meal was satisfactory and amounted to a quick and harmless bite on the run. While I probably wouldn't dine at P. Terry's regularly (certainly not with all of the first-rate food trailers and other dining options around town), an occasional visit to satiate a burger craving is not out of the question. read more

Terry's burger goodness. Even though the parking is a total nightmare (designed by Satan to try to ruin your plan, I am quite sure), I loved my burger with cheese and lettuce and tomato (minus the sauce, as I just didn't feel moved to have it as of yet) and mayo. The meat wasn't overdone, it tasted so good and was juicy. The bun was fresh and soft. Everything came together in a wonderous matrimony of chesseburgery love. I savored every bite of that soft chewy oatmeal chocolate chip cookie goodness and was even able to tolerate the grackels swarming and begging. It is directly across the intersection from McDonald's. I agree that Whataburger is better but my family thinks P. Terry night is a special event. My dog rides along and knows the drill. Living in Westlake means that when you or your bf's got the drunk munchies, there ain't much around that's open (if it's late). For once I finally remembered to stop by here on my way home from a late night downtown. It's great that it's open late! But that's just about the only good thing. He wanted to try a regular hamburger and a double cheeseburger. I figured I'd take a bite of both. When we got home I was expecting something pretty amazing, to be honest. Come on, it's P Terry's, right? But it really wan't so good. It was mushy. Mushy mushy and more mushy. It didn't really taste like much of anything. Nothing can possibly go wrong with P.Terry's! No matter which location you go to, they serve you the best quality hamburger and fries whenever you want. The pros about this location is that it's open late on Friday's and Saturday's till 3am, it's a drive-thru with a walk-up area with outdoor seating, and they sell merchandise just like the other locations! (This location and the other one on North Lamar are probably the closest locations to campus). Only con about this location is the long-drive thru line which may happen during the busy meal times (lunch and dinner). I am not aware of what the late evenings look like, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are long as well. My go-to: Cheeseburger Combo with Dr. Pepper (comes with fries as well). Solid burger place that reminds me of In N Out. The burger had good seasoning on it and was topped with fresh lettuce and tomato. It was late afternoon so I just got the single which enought. I could see how the double would be a savory treat with those two seasoned patties and the combo of the cheese, lettuce, tomato, and special sauce...much like the double double at In N Out. There's loads to like about P. Terry's from the well documented avoidance of transfats in the food, to the fact that the burgers are quick and tasty. Advisable on a pretty day to sit out under one of the trees that provide shade to the benches on the lot, and provide an ample launching point to Molly's Sno Cone stand on the business end of the blacktop. The vibe here seems to be pretty consistently laid back and blissed out, and with good reason: eats are cheap and food that they make rapidly, no one seems to be in a hurry. It felt like a blind date with way too much hype. There were even emails beforehand. Yes, emails. I had contacted the owner concerning the origin of the beef, this was all during my extreme "real food' kick. He assured me it was Nolan Ryan beef from Texas and that the website hadn't been updated yet. I prefer local so PT was on my MUST list. Kerbey Lane was packed and we were too hungry to wait. The hubs and I got each got the double combo and the boys cheeseburger combos. I wasn't paying attention to the prices so when we got our order I realized the size of the burgers reflected the $. We ended up ordering another burger for the the eldest who I swear has an extra stomach in his back pocket. I must say that the fries are too yummy for words. I usually don't like hand cut fries but I don't know what they did to these. They aren't fat and greasy and flat. These were just the right amount grease, skinny cut, and all kids of yummy goodness. Their fries make me want to ugly cry because they're so DARN GOOD. The burgers though to be quite honest are good, but I prefer other fast food burger chains (like In-N-Out). I find the patties here to be quite thin which is quite a turn off for me because I really do value a big and juicy burger (something I feel In-N-Out does give me). What I do love the most about this place is the unique retro design it has going on (as do most P. Terry's have) which makes me feel like I'm living in the 70s and makes me want to listen to Queen every time I come here, its convenient location, the prices, and honestly the food really IS good.
