I'll start by saying the staff here has always been VERY nice and friendly to order from. Outright extra helpfull as a rule. But I'm not sure what's going on with Papalote. They were legendary here in SF. But the last few times we've gotten food here it's either been wrong or simply not very good. They are known for thier Salsa from a long time ago when they beat Bobby Flay in the burrito episode of 'Beat Bobby Flay'. It became such a big deal they bottled it in many variations on styles. Anyway, we always get the fresh version when ordering directly from them. But lately the salsa has been inconsistent to say the least and last time it was watery and not very flavorful. The salsa is always what made this place such a standout. I'm disappointed and plan to give them some time before ordering again. I hope that they pull it together and get back to their superior excelance that drew me and thousands more into the restaurant in the first place. read more

I used to come to Papalote in the Mission years ago but eventually stopped because there always seemed to be some kind of issue (at both locations). Recently, I decided to give them another shot, hoping things had improved. Unfortunately, it felt like the same experience all over again. To be fair, the staff working the counter seemed nice and courteous. The bigger issue, as in the past, appears to be with the ownership/management. There's a certain attitude that comes across as dismissive and unaccommodating, and it really affects the overall experience. I ordered a burrito, which honestly wasn't very good this time around. But what really stood out was the situation with the chips. I received maybe five chips with my order (no exaggeration). so I politely asked if I could have a few more. Instead of a simple, customer-friendly response, it immediately became a big deal. I was told they would have to charge me for extra chips. Is it really that unreasonable to ask for a few additional chips without being charged, especially when the portion was so small to begin with? It felt unnecessarily rigid and unfriendly -- and unfortunately consistent with why I stopped coming in the first place....and btw, the other location is no better. There are so many solid burrito spots in San Francisco that offer both good food and better customer experience. I gave this place another chance, but I don't think I'll be going back. To the owner: Hey there thanks for the message, but I think you're missing the point. This review is about the TERRIBLE attitude that I've been receiving through the years from (what seems like) management and /or ownership, and NOT the free chips! I am a walk in customer, not demanding, and just ordering a simple order and I don't see what delivery has to do with any of this. Once again, the cashier was lovely and courteous as I mentioned in the review! Lastly, I'm sure the chips are not "free". Super carne asada burrito - made it super for $3.50 to add sour cream, guacamole, and cheese. I think it making it super was the right choice because it would've been more bland without it. I ordered through DoorDash and it was one of the tastiest burritos I've had in a while. I got the carne asada burrito, and what I really loved was the sauce that came with it along with the meat to rice ratio. A lot of burrito spots tend to skimp on the meat and overload the burrito with rice, but this one was perfectly balanced. Everything was super flavorful and delicious. I ordered a carne asada burrito to-go and I got extra housemade salsa on the side. the guac had no flavor, the steak had 0 flavor, same for the rice, beans AND salsa Dare I say even the chips are bland? It seems like this place has 0 salt in the kitchen. That's too bad since the ingredients are cooked well, just need proper seasoning and it'd probably be really decent! This is my favorite local Mexican joint in San Francisco. Don't miss the limited edition Benito burrito, which is Bad Bunny's first name it is made with Bacardi marinated shrimp! It's elevated because the food is local! And the salsa is the best you have ever tasted. They get their tomatoes, garlic and onions all from local farms. Just went there with my family after I saw that he has a good reviews on Yelp honestly I do not know how come this place has more than one star It's overpriced compared to any other Taqueria on the mission we ordered 2 burrito bowls one with shrimp and one with chicken and two tacos. The girl that takes orders is extremely impolite and rude while taking orders, the food itself is tasteless beans and rice tasted like caned food, the bowl had 90% lettuce and a sprinkle of protein. El Papalote! Haven't been here in about 9 years. Today we ordered a carne asada super burrito with whole black beans. The burrito was good! I read a comment that mentioned the bean portion is a lot higher than the rest of the other ingredients inside and they're correct. It's not a crazy amount but it's definitely in every bite. Big up if you're a fan of beans! Their salsa is very good. A little too mild for my liking but it's very flavorful and I was chasing my burrito bites with a little sip from the cup. I went to Papalote on Valencia Street in SF after seeing a video on YouTube about Mission style Burritos. I have to say it was extremely disappointing. My wife bought a Burrito bowl and I bought a Super Burrito they both had no 0 flavor the quality of the ingredients seem low. The carne asada had no flavor neither did the rice and beans and everything was rather dry my wife's Burrito was the same she couldn't eat more then 3 bites the chips were also kind of hard no flavor tasted burnt or overcooked not crunchy airy fluffy thin. The staff was friendly but the guy that took my order said that there was going to be a at least 8-10 minute wait for my Burrito it was handed to me in 3 minutes it seems that the meat wasn't cooked when I ordered it everything was Luke warm at best. My wife and I were highly disappointed and if you are going to charge premium price for a Super Burrito$20 and Burrito Bowl$16 at least have flavor, better quality ingredients and not leave the meat dry. Long time fan of Papalote so this review is way overdue! As a vegan, I don't have a lack of options in the city. I also don't have a lack of Mexican/Latin food to choose from. However, what stands out about Papalote is that the vegan option isn't just "whatever veggies we have and thrown together," they actually have tofu & soyrizo on the menu and they cook it well! Holy moly that Tofu Mole is my go-to every time. In a burrito with black or refried beans, (which btw, all their beans & rice is vegan, no second guessing here!). Drizzled with their signature orange salsa. I haven't found a better one yet! They even give you chips, which means you need more salsa. Well, good thing is you can buy it by the jar. This place is always popping, with people constantly coming in to pick up their orders or dining in with an ice-cold beer. I look forward to coming back for another Tofu Mole burrito soon. It's such a shame that this location isn't as good as the Fulton location, which I order delivery from once every other week. My go-to order at the Fulton location is a carne asada super burrito and an order of the bean and cheese dip, so I decided to order the exact same two items from here. However, when I walked over to pick up order, I was upset that the carne asada in my burrito was overcooked and dry. The black refried beans also had a more liquidy texture that tasted off. I was even more disappointed when I saw how little cheese was in the bean and cheese dip. For reference, you can check out my Yelp review of the Fulton location to compare the difference in the bean and cheese dips. Although the Fulton location is farther away from me, I'll definitely chose to order delivery from Fulton rather than walking over to this spot for another meal. Folks, I was just browsing around Yelp while I'm supposed to be working and I come across Papalote. It has only three and a half stars?! What the hell! Ok, I know the inside can sometimes have a really overpowering cleaning chemical smell. That's a fact that I cannot deny. The prices are also on the high side. I'll grant you that. But three and a half stars?! Have you not had the salsa? Their salsa is the closest thing you can get to La Vic's orange sauce without having to go to Hayward. I don't understand what's going on here. My girlfriend and I usually get the veggie burrito with the carrots and potatoes. That is a hearty dinner! You could probably split one between to people and feel pretty good about it. The chips are good. They have the fruit punch Jarritos. What more do you want?! Soyrizo! Tofu!
