If you go to Pappy's Coffee Shop, you better be hungry, because the portions are huge! The prices are awesome for the size of the portions. The service can be a little slow if you go with the breakfast crowd, but it's a great all-American diner with a great atmosphere. Not to mention, the food is always been great. read more

Stop in here randomly trying to find a breakfast spot to take the wife on a brunch date. We don't get out often so wanted to find a new spot for brunch. This spot had an old school diner feel to it. They were spot on with service. When we went, we were able to get a table right away. There was a kid that grabbed us drinks. He was not very personable at all (borderline rude) but drinks were fast so I didn't mind too much. Waitress came over and took our order. Wife had huevos rancheros and I had the fried bologna. Both were very good. We got some salsa on the side that was super bomb. Recommend grabbing a few cups of it Coffee was hot. Food was good. Service was quick. What more could you ask for. Can't wait to slide back over here. This was a great spot. Btw, vets. Show your ID and get a free coffee and/or biscuits and gravy. read more

I've been going here since I was in high school almost 20 years. Let me say, you get more than your money's worth with the portion sizes. There's no such thing as a small breakfast or lunch. Although they do have a low calorie menu which I have never tried, it might just be a little more reasonable. The place is decorated in Bakersfield history of oil field stuff and antiques. It's always busy but the service is usually pretty quick. There's only one bathroom so keep that in mind if you're one who has to use the restroom frequently. I usually get the regular old breakfast of eggs, potatoes and toast but this current visit I decided to try the special of the day...Nutella French toast with strawberry. Doesn't that just sound heavenly? I was not prepared for how massive and decorated it was with whipped cream and all. I was disappointed they weren't fresh strawberries with it but it was amazing nonetheless. I couldn't even use the butter or syrup because it was so sweet and rich. The biscuits are nearly as big as your head and the kids pancakes could feed about three kids. The bacon is thick cut and the coffee is always topped off. If you're in the mood for a massive meal, look no further! read more

Stopped by based off my buddy's word of mouth and I'm glad I did. Classic diner feel when you walk in. All sorts of classic signage from local drilling companies. Probably the only place I've been to that has 5-egg omelettes. I had the hobo omelette sausage, cheese and veggies, like the Dr. ordered. I went with the biscuit & gravy. Gravy was a tad too salty for me, so avoid if you have hypertension and go for the toast. Bring your appetite because it was a generous portion. Everything was delicious. Service was wonderful, all of the servers were helpful and hospitable and even offered suggestions for the next visit. I will definitely be back to Pappys. read more

Omg should of taken pictures of our food omg 100 plus stars. Our good friend and dialysis nurse told us about this place. So glad we came omg it was breakfast, lunch n dinner. Next we are bringing our son and his girlfriend this weekend. It look like family owned company and I recommend to everyone they are only open until 1pm but they are so so good. Service was very professional, fast and family orientated. Ambiance like your at home with your grandparents so beautiful. read more

I tried their Hawaiian Freedom Toast, it is sooo good, I would recommend asking for extra syrup and maybe just get a half order if you're not that hungry, the service is great, the waiters are very nice, the place looks very cool too, would recommend going here! read more

Tried giving Pappy's another chance through Uber Eats. They aren't competent enough to put the entire order in the bag. I called to complain about what was missing and they said it was sitting there, to order it again and they'd send it. WTF? Pay twice? The idiot then got irate with me when I told him I wouldn't do that and yelled at me. Don't waste your time or money on this crap diner. You'll get better service ANYWHERE ELSE. Thomas, don't lie. No discount was offered. I was told to order again. It's too bad your business survived the pandemic. I was a fool to support it. Another update:. This business DOES NOT LIKE bad reviews. They contacted Uber Eats and attempted to get me removed for complaining and then messaged me threatening to call the police and file a libel/slander suit against me. This just shows how unprofessional this business really is. I had to block them on Facebook to get them to leave me alone. read more

This morning my boyfriend and I went to the coffee shop to have breakfast and go on a mini date. It was 5:20am and we were greeted by Shawnel. I've lived in Bakersfield my entire life and I have been to Pappy's a million times, but my boyfriend Branden has never been. From the moment we stepped in, she was absolutely fantastic. Her customer service was impeccable, and her kindness was shown through many actions. We felt welcome and she treated us very well. It's frequently crowded, often loud, and the décor is an homage to Bakersfield's industrial and oil backbone. It is completely Bakersfield, so it is not surprising that it has become such a local institution. The food has a very 'home-cookin' vibe to it, and the portion sizes certainly won't leave you feeling hungry, or cheated. Good coffee, perfect hash-browns, and a chicken fried steak that barely fits on a plate. Pappy's is a classic diner catering to a loyal crowd with hearty appetites. read more

So so so good! They give a generous amount of creamer to go with the coffee which is always appreciated. The servers are all very kind as well! We were a party of five and sat within 10 minutes on a Sunday morning. The food was BEAUTIFUL!! The chocolate chip pancake was perfectly made, seriously delicious. The right number of chocolate chips and the right amount of cook time! We also tried the Bakersfield omelet which was spiced sooo well. A bit spicy so if you're not into that I'd suggest getting something else! And finally we got the corned beef hash which was also really really good! All in all no disappointments here! read more

Road Trip! Day #1 Mr B and I are heading about as far north as we can. Yup. Alaska. But we have a few stops along the way. Gotta stop at Pappy's. Groupon. Breakfast time. Well, actually, my tummy was already saying lunch. Skip the ho-hum eggs. First impression - GPS guides us to this ugly, tired, dusty strip mall, with no redeeming qualities. The dust even has dust. Oh, this is going to be bad, thinks I. Well, we go in anyway. Dusty animal heads mounted on the walls beside decades of old faded pictures of oil wells and Bakersfield artifacts. The tables and chairs come direct from Used Office Furniture Depot. Oh, no. Really bad. Bathroom, only one. The seat better be put down. Not happy. Nice young girl seats us. Menu looks decent. Yelpers said "good food". Wendy, keep an open mind! Order: One BLT and one mushroom burger. Potato salad and fresh fruit for sides. Food appears quickly. The hamburger has a little American flag poked into the bun. Am I supposed to stand and salute first? Holy sweet Jesus. My BLT is beautiful. The bacon, absolutely tops. Thick, cooked to perfection, smoky, and generous. Mr. B's burger, half a pound of the juiciest, tastiest meat. The potato salad side - served in a soup bowl. Really. Enough for a family of 4. Full of chopped HB egg, olives, green bell pepper, onion, and just the right amount of mayo. Granny - I know you are hiding in the back. This is way too good. And the fruit cup. Why, oh why, do I have to come all the way to Bakersfield to get the sweetest most perfect melon bites. And the people are so nice. A huge bunch of high school football players. Not a single swear word. Am I deaf or in Salt Lake City? Nope. I'm done passing judgment. I'm here for the grub. Total Bill: $3.94 not including the $7 that I paid for the Groupon. Waited five minutes for our coffee The food was delicious The service after the coffee was great The negative part is the cleanliness of the restaurant. Tables are dirty and even the pos station is dump looking It's messy and there were empty cardboard boxes stacked on a few tables and the floor The owner is sitting at the bar with a mess around him. We've been there a total of 3 times because my coworker swears this is the best diner in town and all 3 times the service sucks! We waited about 10 mins for our server to even come to our table and ask if we wanted drinks. And this last time we visited I waited 30 plus mins for a chicken sandwich mind you everyone at our table had been served. Horrible wait times! They have definitely lost our business and to top it off this place is dirty!! read more

The best breakfast in Bakersfield by far! This tiny little place is packed daily from early morning through lunch. I've been to the restaurant for in service meals both at booths and the tiny bar top and the service has always been great. Seems like a family owned restaurant with hired high school kids which is nice to see. I've also ordered take out from here which takes about 20mins but it's always hot, fresh, and made to order. My favorite is the Snakebite omelet which usually comes with Italian sausage (I Sub for ham), banana peppers, jalapeños, pepperjack cheese, and onions, it is soooo good! Comes w choice of hasbrowns or country potatoes always cooked perfectly, and side toast buttered. Even when I get take out the food is hot and they send jelly, salsa, and even hot coffee w creamer on the side. Also tried the wide variety of omelets and the huge breakfast burrito which has everything and can definitely fill 2 people! My go to breakfast spot for good in Bako even if it takes 20-30mins before my meal is ready! read more

I really wish I could have liked Pappy's, but in a town where the brunch options are both extensive and exceptional, having poor quality food with poor quality ingredients is unacceptable. The positives: waitstaff was nice enough, although a few of them looked like they'd prefer to be anywhere else, and weren't particularly helpful. The coffee was very good, and the variety of creamer options was a definite plus. The ranch dressing was delicious. The waffles are fantastic. Grits were good. Decor is funky and unique. The negatives: almost all of our food went half eaten or uneaten. The chicken fried steak tasted foul, the hash browns were horribly undercooked, the bacon was basically two strips of black cinder, the eggs were mediocre at best, the roast beef was inedible, and the biscuits left a lot to be desired. Of the five of us, only two finished their meal, and only one enjoyed it. We won't be coming back. Ever. Even if there weren't a dozen better options in town (which there are), it's not a pleasant time out. read more

On my first visit I was impressed having the crispy chicken sandwich with bacon and swiss cheese. So I decided I'd go for it again. It's my moms birthday today so I thought I'd take her for something better than fastfood. I sold her on how good the sandwich was so she ordered the same. -Arrived at 10:55am -At 11:55am after waiting for our food for a whole hour I had to ask for our food to go because I had somewhere else to be at 12:30pm. -12:10ish got the to go order As soon as I got to my car with the food I opened it: soggy fries, sandwich was not what I had previously ordered & was missing bacon & pickle and on the first bite I noticed the bun was not toasted but burned, chicken way overcooked it was dry and the lettuce/mixed greens (and stems, yes it had stems) was gross it should have been thrown out. When I pulled it off the sandwich it left the bun black. Eww. Only gave it a 2 because of my first experience. My second also my last visit would be close to a zero. When I got home, the food was stone cold, the english muffin was like a wet sponge, and the worst part of it, the poached egg had no egg white, and the yolk was completely cooked. And I live less than 5 minutes from the restaurant. So it didn't sit with me for any longer than that. Completely dissatisfied and angry. Wont be going back anytime soon. read more

There was a time I'd pick up the party-size for my coworkers when I liked them... but alas, times have changed so more for me. We were seated right in front of the kitchen, and my wife began noticing some concerning food safety issues from one of the cooks. She observed him handling ready to eat, cooked food with his bare hands, including picking up avocado from her California omelette so another cook could add cheese underneath. Shortly after, she saw him rub his nose and continue working without washing his hands. The final straw was watching him grab a pinch of scrambled eggs from a plate on the hot line and eat it with his fingers. At that point, we were completely turned off. We had already placed our order, but there was no way we were going to eat after seeing that. My wife went to the counter and let the server know what she had witnessed, and we left. It's disappointing because the menu looked great and we were really looking forward to trying this place. I'm not sure how this behavior isn't being noticed or addressed by other staff, but based on what we saw, it didn't seem like a one-time thing. I hope management takes this seriously, reviews their cameras, and reinforces proper food safety standards.

This is the dirtiest restaurant I've ever eaten at - YUCK!! I can not imagine that they have a very good rating from health department. Additionally, I have no idea what the "theme" is supposed to be inside except for someone's warped mind - looks like the inside the mind of some crazy burnt out oil field worker who hunts and likes to think they even know about politics. Walls are filled with pictures and dead animals covered in grime from lack of any cleaning over what looks like many, many years of sheer laziness. What scares me most is if this is what greets its patrons (which is typically your best face forward) how much worse is it where they food prep - where we can't see????? My teenage son ate 1/4 of Club Sandwich before telling me it tasted sour. I smelled the turkey, odor clearly turkey rotten. Take to waitress who was grabbing more dishes to take to unsuspecting customers. I told her turkey had gone bad, tasted and smelled sour, she said "Ewwwww". Go back to my table. My teenage daughter working on her mashed potatoes, they had been smothered with gravy so she hadn't noticed before. Mom, don't want to complain, but I think the potatoes are bad too. Im not a huge yelper. Sure, Ive had subpar experiences at places but not returning is how I deal with that. I frequent this establishment several times a month and am never disappointed. Either by the mid-week staff or the weekend staff. The food is the high point. Thick bacon, almost like back bacon, although that is a different cut of pork belly. Skillet's with fries are my new favorite and I hope they do add the banana french toast to the menu. It was divine. read more

This place is a crap hole. The food is absolutely horrible. The manager is a miserable mess and should be fired. Save your money and go to Spencers. There are way more healthier choices than this grease pit in Rosedale. read more

On our last visit a few weeks ago when my youngest was down for spring break we came for breakfast and even my kids were surprised how good the food was. Breakfast is probably my favorite meal of the day and possibly the rest of my family because we all love eggs. My sons definitely want to come back and this place is already a place me and my husband loves to visit now. When you first walk in, you can't help but feel an older diner feel, the decoration is vintage and it almost looks like a restaurant from the 80s. Every time I have visited now, there's always people dining in, so this seems like a nice place Bakersfield people like to visit. The restaurant looks clean, just outdated. Service is always great, we have always been greeted with friendliness and patience because we never know what we want and sometimes we take time to order. Coffee is nice, they make the coffee semi strong which is perfect for me. Parking is a little crazy sometimes because of the surrounding businesses, but if you're like me and lived in Bakersfield for years and haven't visited, then you need to make your way out to check this place out!
