Paprika is my new go-to when I'm in the hood but not in the mood for a burrito. It's a cozy, cash only spot, but the last few times, I've been able to call in a day-of reservation without an issue, making it a great restaurant to keep...up your sleeve (?) for last minute dinner dates. Both goulashes are delicious, especially when you sop the excess up with their crusty bread, and the sausage plates let you eat 3 times what you would at Rosamunde without looking like a fatty. I came here for dinner with a friend. We had the small plate of gourmet sausage where you choose two from the following: Polish kielbasa, Swiss bockwurst, German spice, Italian chicken-apple, or Hungarian sweet. with sauerkraut, pickles and local bread for $6.50 We had the German spice and Swiss bockwurst. The sausages come out grilled and are pretty tasty. We then order entrees, me having the mix of 2 sausages of your choice with mashed potatoes and homemade gravy for $12.50 I guess I was feeling sausage crazy. I had the Swiss bockwurst and Polish kielbasa. The Swiss bockwurst is delicious. The Polish kielbasa tasted a lot like the German spice, so perhaps that's what I received. My friend ordered the chick paprikash with mashed potatoes for $14.50. The one taste I had was really good. I'd order it if I came back. We were stuffed and didn't try dessert. They did give us a taste of paprika goulash which was also tasty. The gravy seems to the be same for everything, a red gravy. I'm assuming paprika is a large part of the base. Service was attentive. I'm a little surprised by the enthusiasm in other reviews. I had the goulash, and while the sauce was rich and flavorful, the pork itself had clearly been stewed past its time. I can live with dry pork, especially when a sauce is this rich and thick, but I can't really do the (frozen?) gnocchi they're serving... especially not at $26/entree. My cousin barely touched her plate of vegan sausage and mashed potatoes. Yeah, her fault on the vegan sausage thing, but the potatoes were eerily reminiscent of my elementary school cafeteria. My cousin will eat *any* plate of mashed potatoes... but not these. I don't get any great joy out of bashing Paprika, but it just wasn't very good, particularly at these prices. Love this place. I've been going every couple weeks since it's around the corner from my apartment. The food is really quality and I've gone through a lot of the menu now (small menu): everything I've had was tasty. Chicken Paprikash was the favorite. Owners are great. The woman who runs the place most of the time has happily suggested new dishes and I've been thrilled with all of them. Healthy servings of beer too. The boot was a good option. Met a friend here for dinner. I live in the East Bay but love a quick Bart ride into the city now and then. The owners, Peter & Gabby were very welcoming and Gabby seated us herself. The food presentation was great and the food tasted just as good as it looked! When we were there a neighbor Chef came in for a meal and suggested the Sangria. Going back to try the Sangria will be a good excuse to go into the city for another great meal by this lovely couple. Sausage and beer: what's NOT to like? We split a kielbasa and bockwurst plate, with a side of gherkins, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes. I liked how they cut into the sausages before grilling them (just like my dad used to). Four exclusive (I think) European beers on tap, and we got to try them all. Awesome. 4.25 stars. There are two reasons why you should go here: 1) the sausages they make in this restaurant are some of the best you will find internationally and 2) they have a small yet awesome beer selection. We ordered just two sausages, but when I tried both of them, I instantly regretted not ordering a platter of all of them. While the German sausage was quite good (even better than some I've found in Texas shops run by actual Germans), the Hungarian sweet sausage is literally the best rendition of the sausage I've found anywhere.... including Hungary! Granted, this isn't exactly a dish I tried too often in the host country, but you'll be impressed by this one. With a name like Paprika, I was hoping for a few more Hungarian dishes, but you'll likely have to settle for a hearty goulash as there was no fried goose to be found. It's fine, but you'll find yourself wishing you ordered more sausage. As for beers, they are huge, cheap and tasty. This isn't an easy combination to find in this city. While some of my friends questioned why I wanted to go here of all places when I came to visit SF, it ended up being a very wise choice. For anyone with a little culinary interest in central Europe, Paprika is worth a visit. read more

Loved the beer, loved the food; we'll be back! We had the vegan sausage small plate and the chicken paprikash. Really tasty food. The meat in the paprikash was nice shreds of chicken, just like I would make at home. I recommend getting some bread with that dish; the bread is good and there's lots of extra sauce you'll want to eat. Vegan sausage was surprisingly good (yeah, I didn't order it but had a taste...). It's a wonderful low stress kind of place. The guys there were very helpful - we sampled 3 beers before selecting the pilsner and the imperial. The dark beer was also good so we had some for dessert. My experience at Paprika was amazing! I found this place by searching on Yelp because my boyfriend wanted to do das boot for his birthday. However, all of the other places in the city with das boot were either booked, didn't take reservations, or wasn't in a good neighborhood for going out after. I called a few days earlier asking if they accommodate my large group of 20 people and the owner said he would get back to me the next day. He called and said it wouldn't be a problem, so I confirmed! I called Friday to confirm again and told him the number dropped to 15 and he seemed happy about that. Being the party host, I got there 15 minutes early to make sure everything was all set up and it was! Right when we sat down, the birthday boy ordered the 1 liter das boot! Even though it's smaller than the "real" das boot, it has a thicker glass so it wasn't as easy to break, and your beer isn't all warm once you get to the bottom. Also, they only charge a $1 fee for the boot, where as another place I heard charges a $50 deposit for each boot in case you break it. I don't normally eat German food, but it was all really good! My friend was saying how authentic it was because of the smell of the place. I now know why their Yelp score is a 96 out of 100. And since it was my boyfriend's birthday, they gave us a free dessert and we chose the apple strudel because the owner makes it himself. It was delicious!!! As you can probably tell, it was a great time. Might I add the owners are very sweet and hard-working. They really know the meaning of great customer service. Paprika was recommended to me from my Czech friend and I couldn't be more grateful! We ate whatever was recommended from the owner and had incredible conversations about their culture and how the place was founded. This is the kind of homey restaurant that feels like you're at your foreign grandma's house hanging out with your cousins. I can't wait to visit SF and stop back here. Couldn't have made a better pick for dinner. We ordered the chicken paprikash and the sausage plate. Both were awesome. Well flavored paprikash with some yummy mashed potatoes. Also, they are very generous on their bread :-) . I also had the boot beer which is definitely fun. I do wish they had more beer choices! It's a small place and the people who run the place are super sweet and very friendly. They definitely add on to the wholesome experience. TLDR: I came here for a casual dinner with a friend--though it appeared to market itself as an upscale restaurant in its prices and decor (from the exterior), it is cash only and I did not find the food to be too remarkable. FOOD: Everything here will leave you full and warm. - Goulash--the presentation was nice, though I wasn't wowed by the flavor. - Mixed sausages--not sure whether these are made in-house? In any case, they didn't feel any more special than something I could have picked up at Safeway. Would have rather had an Aidelli's sausage. Potatoes that accompanied were a little bland and gravy was flavorless. - Wine--value of happy hour is undeniable here. Perhaps next time I will come for a drink and an appetizer SERVICE: Friendly enough--the greeter seemed a little frazzled, though I appreciated her telling us it was cash only upfront. I am not dinging Paprika for this in my rating, but I do think a restaurant that is charging $16/entree should really take credit in a city that is so quickly becoming cashless. AMBIANCE: The inside felt a little dark for my liking--perhaps due to the black curtains on the windows. For what this place strives to be, it does it really well. It's a pretty spare brauhaus, a few tables surrounded by almost naked walls. The menu is limited but quite good, a selection of a few delicious sausages, salads, and cheeses. We had the house salad, the kielbasa and bockwurst sausages with stone mustard and pickled vegetables, and the cheese platter. Everything was very good, if not exceptional. It doesn't have the richness of a SF gastropub but it's just solid and unpretentious. If you're in the area and want to grab a beer and a bit, it's a good place to pop into. read more

No. That's a tie for a place in Kimberly, BC and another on the highway going into Castlegar, BC. Those were by far the best I've had. This comes in second... We didn't need a reservation on a Wednesday night, but we made one anyway. A folded paper sign on the bar read 'cash only' when we walked in, so we weren't clear if that was temporary or not. Our host/waiter was eager to seat us, and while she got distracted once while checking something for us (and thus disappeared for a few minutes) our food and drinks still came out quickly. We shared the creamy goulash and a cheese platter for our meal, and with a beer that was plenty. They brought bread later in the meal but it still helped soak up the tasty sauce. The total bill came to around $40, which is getting up there for a cash-only establishment (and we shared our only entree). However, when we realized we didn't have enough cash and stepped out to visit an ATM next door, the waiter gave us a couple dollars back as a refund for the ATM fee-- an unexpected but appreciated gesture. I'll definitely be back, but it's not so cheap I'll eat here all the time. read more

I LOVE this place, I come here AT LEAST once a week! Its cozy but intimate and casual, all at the same time?! I'm a sucker for versatile places where I can go alone for lunch or order take out and bring a few friends or a date for dinner. Let alone, the food is actually amazing here. The owners(who are also the chefs, and yes, all of them are chefs) actually care about the food and make sure it comes out tasty let alone they care about service. I've tried the whole menu and there is nothing that I would call less than good but I am a sucker for their German Spice sausages and I just tried the Reuben today and WOW, I am shocked! Let alone it was an amazing sandwich, it comes with a soup or salad and I got the lentil soup which was PRETTTYYY damn good!!! Naturally, theres REALLY good beer to accompany all the good food and I'm still working my way through those but there is a REALLY good Czech pilsner here. Last but not least, the service, THE SERVICE!! They are attentive and shockingly friendly, when your bill comes, you feel like you are supporting your friend as opposed to being just another customer in a restaurant. Czech food. Awesome Czech food. Very friendly service in a casual atmosphere that looks fancier from the outside for some reason. I'm disappointed we waited so long to try it. Cash only, but an ATM is next door and they'll take the fee off your bill (and so will your bank unless you're getting hosed - BONUS!). Big, cheap Czech beers (not as cheap as the real thing, unfortunately) in big glass boots. I didn't understand the glass boot, but was happy I ordered it and disappointed they didn't slam it onto my table. And...they have the largest bathroom in the Mission. Like so big you could put two more tables in there (I'm glad they don't). I highly recommend Paprika. read more

If you're vegetarian, they have a few vegetarian small plates that will get you by for a visit or two. The Caprese salad is amazing. The vegan sausage is tasty too and is plated in a cute way. This popped up from a search for 'goulash' and it delivered! on a fairly seedy corner in the Mish, it's an enclave of Hungarian-Czech goodness (the owner is Czech with Hungarian roots). Very cozy, small setup with classy tables, decent alcohol selection and extremely attentive, friendly service. Oh and the GOULASH. To die for. The hubs was in heaven already with his hugely-sized pilsner, and then gleefully consumed his pork dish accompanied by gnocchi. I was a bit daring and went for the vegan sausage option (I know, kind of sacrilegious) but they pulled it off! This went way beyond what you might fear e.g. a packaged, factory-produced thing. It had a unique texture that worked it's veganness. With a neat roll and kraut and probably the spiciest mustard I have ever tasted. The wine totally worked (a special white..erm...). Old World and Old School! I've been here 4 times now and the food has been very consistently good, mixed with Old World goodness and amazing personalized service by the husband and wife owners. Paprika reminds me of Mom and Pop places that use to make SF accessible to all, reasonably priced, a little gritty and very friendly. The sausages are on par with higher end Gastro Pubs but you won't find Edison bulbs and repurposed wood here. The Goulashe Soup and Goulashe Gravy (They might be the same thing) is what makes this food stand out, it has an intense flavor that you'll find yourself craving days later. A small but excellent Beer selection including the oldest established Beer on the planet. Oh, and they don't take plastic so bring some cash! read more

This is a great neighborhood spot! It's in unassuming location close to the 24th St. BART and has a cozy, inviting ambience. You can usually eat without a wait, too (which is such a blessing in the Mission!). Onto the food! I wasn't super familiar with this type of cuisine when I first visited, but I've tried most things on the menu at this point and you can't go wrong with any of it. My favorite dish is the pork kielbasa, which is nicely cooked (charred outside, juicy inside) and served with amazing mashed potatoes with gravy and sauerkraut. I will note that the menu doesn't have a huge abundance of choices, but I almost like that better than places that have too many options. Beers are all good and affordable, wines are huge pours. I had the Chicken Paprikash which had a really delicious sauce. Though I wish I this place had cocktails, the beers were solid choices. The food is really good and service is good too! We enjoyed the warm respite from this "arctic" December cold in SF yesterday. What a lovely little gem that is neither old and grungy nor uber-hip, pretentious. The small menu delivers just what it promises: hearty, tasty, homemade fare. Big portions, simple presentation, good European beers on tap. The sausages are delicious. YJ exclaimed that the split pea soup was the best she's ever had -- rich flavors, but not buttery or creamy. The half-liter of beer was the "small" size ... how is 18 oz "small?" Too big for me tonight, the lager I chose came fresh and cold from the tap in a barrel-shaped mug. Fun stuff. We sopped up all the sauce of our goulash with the freshly warmed baguette offered, once all the soft gnochi had somehow disappeared. We'll be back to try more dishes and more beers...maybe one or two of the promised "Delicious European Desserts" too. Why not? All else promised was delivered! read more

We went to Paprika on a couple of occasions. The first time was only to explore this kind of cuisine. We had such a wonderful experience that we decided to take our friend there for his birthday. Once again, this place exceeded our expectations. The restaurant has a genuine neighbourhood feel to it. It is cozy and authentic. It is also noise friendly (actually one of the few places where we could hear ourselves). Our waitress was exceptionally nice. She made sure we had a delightful dinner. Speaking of which (since it's the main reason one goes out in the first place) is of great quality. The sausages are super delicious, the Goulash is amazing. I would also recommend the charcuterie and cheese platter as a starter. The three of us loved it! We had three different desserts, chocolate, apple strudel and a cheesecake. We are not dessert people usually but this was a birthday. I have to say that I rarely enjoyed a dessert the way I did in Paprika. All in all, you can't go wrong with any of the menu items. I had dinner with 6 friends here, we were mostly Serbs, but one Hungarian and one Russian. The restaurant is very cozy and easy to find, but parking in that area can be a hassle. Luckily, it's close to BART. The server was probably one of the most pleasant ever - I don't remember her name, but she was so sweet and accommodating - ten stars for her! :) I ordered Pork goulash with mashed potatoes instead of gnocchi. Now, for U.S, this tasted pretty great, but I gave 4 stars simply because I've had better so far so it's hard for me to be impressed. I tried chicken paprikash from my friend, and this was good too. Portions seem small, but once you start eating, it's plenty! They have beer in "das boot", which is 1 liter, so I recommend that too (most places I've been to these are 2 liters).
