The food is this restaurant's saving grace. Came in on a Sunday afternoon for a late lunch with my boyfriend. We've been to the Parm in Soho before, so we were familiar with the choices and options here. We walk in and were greeted by the owner/manager? of the place who told us that his hostess would seat us. Sure no problem. A few seconds later a very lackadaisical young lady walks over to us, grabs two menus, and if it weren't for the fact that she held the menus, we followed her to our table. No hello, how are you, no acknowledgement whatsoever. It seemed as if she didn't even want to be there (and frankly speaking after my dining experience there, I can't blame her). The restaurant at this point is fairly empty with about three or four families there also eating. I counted about 4 to 5 waiters working there at the time.
So we sit at our table and about five minutes later, a server approaches and fills our glasses with water and asks if we have any questions about the menu. He seemed pretty friendly and we asked for more time to go over the menu. A few minutes later he comes back and we place our order. 10 minutes later, we're still waiting for our food, which we're totally okay with, no big deal, it takes time to cook. About 5 minutes later, we see our server come out of the kitchen with what we think was our food. Nope, he plops down in a booth and decides to take his lunch break, leaving my boyfriend and I wondering what's going on with our order. Another 5 minutes pass and we hear the manager ask another waiter who's taking care of us. She seems pretty flustered but she comes over and introduces herself and says she's taking over. Okay cool. Our food comes shortly after and my boyfriend and I dig in.
We finish our meal, but no one bothered to come check on us if we needed anything or had any other requests. No big deal, we were fine with just our food anyways. After we finish, we sat there for about 20 minutes waiting for our waiter (or any waiter for the matter) to approach us so that we could get the check. Nobody comes. We continued to try to flag down a waiter for another 5 minutes, before we managed to get the attention of another waiter who was able to relay our request to our second waiter. At that point, when she gave us the check, I immediately handed her my card without looking at the bill, because I didn't know how much longer it would have taken to get the attention of another waiter.
My boyfriend ordered the chicken parm platter (his go to and probably his favorite dish) and enjoyed it. I didn't try it, but he said it was a little spicy. I ordered the fusilli and it was pretty good as well. Pasta was well cooked and there was ample bolognese sauce. We shared the Italian fries and the sauce that comes accompanying it was very tasty and had a little kick.
Next time, I'd probably stick to ordering take out or delivery from this place. I don't remember having the same experience at their Mulberry location, but that location is much smaller than their Battery Park location. read more
