Came here after picking up some doggie cupcakes at Sprinkles within the same plaza. Was craving a caffeine fix and wanted to get something on the hotter side instead of my typical iced drinks from coffee shops. Picked up a large Hazelnut Caramel Latte since it caught my eye coming in the store. It wasn't bad, but then again how can you mess up a latte right? Things were fine until I realized getting a large was a bit of a mistake on my end since within half an hour+ in things started to get cold and it wasn't as great as it initially was. Another thing to mention is that the closer you get to the bottom, the more of that overwhelming sweet taste sensation you get in your mouth, so make sure you have some water at hand to wash that out of your system. Overall, pretty good drink but I think I'll stick to my Starbucks and Cafe Su Das for the most part unless I'm ever out of luck as those two as my main go-tos. read more

Stopped by here on Tues, after paddling in Laguna, and before a meeting in Huntington that evening. The plaza is nice and classy. I've been here once before and like to bring my book and journal for some reading and writing, while sitting by the fountain. The iced mocha was nice and they even have a syrup pump for those who prefer to add their own sweet syrup, instead of sugar. I opted to drink mine as is, since it was sweet enough. I've heard a lot about Peet's and always wondered if it would live up to the hype. Unfortunately, it didn't. All I wanted was a simple iced coffee. They didn't know what they had ready, and when they figured it out we still had to wait for it to brew. Then we were served our beverages. Hot. My boyfriend clearly ordered iced coffees and his voice tends to carry; he doesn't mumble. So I wasn't impressed by the service. And then I wasn't really too impressed with the coffee either. It had a somewhat bitter taste to me. I've enjoyed a cup (or two) of Peet's at my brother's house in Fort Worth, TX. Maybe it was just an off day. I've been wanting to try the dirty chai latte and so I decided to order one and I requested it to be made extra sweet. If you didn't know, a dirty chai is chai tea with espresso shot. To my surprise it tasted wonderful. It wasn't too sweet and it wasn't too bitter. It was actually perfect and enjoyable. I ordered my drink with less ice and they made my drink the way I requested it to be made. The service was quick and friendly and there is plenty of seating inside for you to enjoy your drink. There are plenty of items on the menu to try. I would definitely like to stop by this location to try other drinks on their menu. I like this Peet's because it hits all the necessary criteria for me when I need to get work done on my laptop: it's clean, the music isn't ridonkulous and overly loud; there are no smelly vagabonds like you'll find at Starbucks milling around or taking up premium table or seat space (in my personal experience I cannot focus if there's a guy who hasn't showered in a year sitting in the same room- I'll go outside and then he'll go outside too and his smell will carry on the wind and I can't focus again- I've had this issue before and it's SO FRUSTRATING); the seating is fairly comfortable and not awkward; and there's free WiFi that you don't need to log into spectrum for; last but not least it's an affluent area so it's safe and the bathrooms are clean and no one's bathed in them. It sucks that I have to drive around town to find an adequate coffee shop that has good hours for studying and I can just actually focus rather than be distracted by weird, distracting people or super loud music or major crowds- or feel guilty about taking a table when there's lots of people in the cafe who'd want to sit and eat and drink. I don't always dish out 5 star reviews for chain coffee shops, but I've been a fan of Peet's Coffee for many years (in fact, my first Yelp review ever was for Peet's Coffee in Bella Terra). This location has become my go-to because it is walking distance from my office - a much-needed escape during long afternoons when I need a caffeine boost or just need an excuse to take a walk. I've never had a bad experience and will continue to frequent since it is so convenient. The staff is always friendly to me, makes my drink the way I like it, and recognizes me and makes sure that I get my Peetnik rewards check-in when I'm paying. Mornings are the busiest, but I appreciate that they always have decaf iced coffee on hand (Something I've learned Starbucks doesn't do) and so I have options when I need to cut back on caffeine. This location underwent a store makeover during the summer, so for two months I tried make do with the coffee at nearby Bristol's and it just didn't hit the spot. Overall, this CDM location of Peet's works for me, so I'll happily give this spot 5 stars (and continue being the Duchess - booyah!) read more

Horrible service. My mocha was not even full. Asked for a large and they probably filled it to a medium in a large cup. Asked for extra hot and it was not. No apology and they did not offer to remake it. Also, you should train your barista not to make fun of their customers in front of other customers. It looks like Peet's utilizes local purveyors of baked goods since the offerings at the LA Peet's were different from those in the Bay Area -- also a plus. Now that Kobe's not always begging to meet me at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in NPB for marital advice anymore (he didn't take my advice anyway..."don't show little Kobe to all those Laker Dancers and hotel concierge chickee's", I said...but did he listen...no, he did not), I can quit dropping in on CB&TL and head down to my regular coffee hang out! That would be the celebrity and wealth laden Peets Coffee, all snuggled up between Tommy Bahama (Official Motto - "Relax, Dammit!") and Jack's, "for all your surf and wet suit needs". Hailing originally from Oregon, and then migrating to SFO, I've been spoiled by great coffee over the years. The specialty coffee craze began almost simultaneously in Portland and Seattle...SFO followed suit in short order. Then the rest of the country jumped on the bandwagon and the next thing you know, I could enjoy a gigantic mug of piping hot organically grown, French press Sumatran on a balmy summer day in Scottsdale, Arizona (with the outside air temp hovering near 119 degrees...in the shade). I'm a bit of a coffee purist though...I enjoy a high quality "cuppa" much more than I do the double shot, triple pump, caramel macchiato, with whipped cream and chocolate drizzles (with extra sugar, heart disease and diabetes, please). And I enjoy the coffee at Peets, one of the original high end, high quality coffee chains. Are there independent, fair trade, extra cool and groovy little coffee shops that make better coffee?...yeah, probably. And I like them, too! They're just not as close to my house. And sure, Starbuck's has better marketing...that's because all the marketing guys at Peets jumped ship back in the `90's and created Starbucks! But the joke was on them, because when they left Peets, they took a bunch of stuff with them, including a faulty coffee roasting timer. That particular timer runs slow! So whenever Charbucks roasted their beans, they'd cremate them...I mean they would just incinerate them! Wouldn't that just roast your beans!?!? But now Charbucks is stuck with a flavor profile that includes the words "charcoal" and "ash", while Peet's sails along making some of the best "chain oriented" coffee around! This particular Peets outpost is close to home and the store is always clean and neat...always has fresh coffee made and always greets me with a smile and friendly "Howdy Do!", when I stroll in. And this Peets (as you would expect for a NPB location) is well stocked with all your coffee related goodies and accessories...scones, croissant, beans, grinders, the obligatory mugs and espresso machines...and plenty of sugar and spice, cream and everything else to make your coffee just the way you like it! More importantly (remember, we're in NPB, Baby!), this Peets always seems to be well stocked with celeb's, from the occasional Tiger sighting (say, I bet he has some advice for Kobe!) to the frequent Kerri Walsh sightings...even a non-rampaging Nicholas Cage and a friendly and jocular Howie Long show up from time to time. Everybody stares at them while they try to look like they are not staring at them...reading something very important on their iPads as their eyes dart furtively around, necks moving almost imperceptibly to get a better viewing angle. Fun to watch...even more fun to do! That's where my Ray-Bans come in handy...fake reading my iPad inside the building while I watch Patrick Dempsey get his latte on! read more

Don't get me wrong, I love Peet's more than any other coffee and tea joint around; but, this particular location is just horrible service wise. I'm normally not in the Newport area, but I happened to have an interview across the street from this location today. I got to the area about 40 minutes before the interview and had time to kill, so I stopped in Peet's to use the restroom and (hopefully) get a tea. I walked in, used the restroom, than walked to the counter to order my tea. I stood there for about 5 minutes waiting to place my order. I even made eye contact with the Barista at least twice and smiled at him, but got nothing from him. Am I not Newport enough for you to serve me? Is it my clothes? I mean, I am dressed nicely for my interview even though my outfit didn't cost 100+ bucks. Oh, I get it. I'm not driving a fancy BMW or Mercedes like everyone else in front of your store, right? I know I'm only ordering a $3 tea. Is it not enough business for you? After I couldn't take it anymore, I left. Worst. Service. EVER! I walked out unhappy and thirsty. Darn Barista! Made my already bad day worse. Where's the restart button? Oh, and take my advice -- skip this particular location and get your coffee at the gas station next door. I love Peet's! I was on a quest last weekend to visit places that we do not have at home (Central VA) so Peet's certainly fit the bill. I ordered my litmus test drink (vanilla latte) and it was super good. I loved the blue straw. I LOVE the NPB Avocado Ave Peets. When I first moved to The OC with my sister awhile back, this was the closest Peets to our apartment. An easy hop skip and jump jaunt off of PCH, you even get to view the ocean on the drive here. Parking can be a challenged in the parking lot during busy times, but that's always the case in SoCal, so no demerits for that. (It's not easy being popular, after all, right?) Clean bathroom, safe to use (Ladies, we care, right?). Nice seating indoors and even lovelier in the outdoor patio seating, which, seeing this is SoCal, is usable just about 99.3% of the time except on those blessed rain days we get, which by the time we do get, we're so grateful for. Just sip your cappuccino indoors that day. I have enjoyed arranging to meet family and friends here because it has such great access to Macarthur as well as PCH. Nice place to meet loads of men on the Sat early AMs, too. Popular venue for cyclists. Keep fit and drink Forte! read more

To the reviews below speaking of bad service, this location tends to get VERY busy, and it's nearly impossible for them to greet each person individually. However I do think they would benefit from an additional employee between the times of 8am-11am because I see many people walk up, and walk back out the door due to the lines. I'm really surprised by all the bad reviews. I've been going here for awhile and I've never had a bad experience. The staff has always been very nice and friendly to me and I'm not a "Newport" type person. Ya there are a lot of Newportians that go here but this Peet's is located in a high scale center with very expensive stores, so you gotta expect the Newport type of crowd. Peet's has a large following in California. I've seen them in smaller cities that try to keep it local, and support mom and pop over chains and corporations (San Luis Obispo). That being said, I always leave this location with an upbeat and satisfying experience. I love the introduction of their Cold Brew and Black Tie coffees! The dark roasts are great. The staff here has always been super friendly, and strikes up conversation that goes beyond "hi, how are you?" I've come when there is a line going out the door, and they really move fast without compromising the quality of your beverage, AND someone is always cleaning or tidying up. No complaints here :) A lot of the customers that come here hang out by the fountain and seating right outside, and many times I see groups of cyclists, yoga-goers, grandmothers with grandchildren, businessmen...there is definitely a sense of community hanging out at this spot! read more

The outdoor seating area surrounding a little fountain in the midst of this bustling center on Avocado has a European quality to it that's perfect for enjoying a crisp tea and people watching the afternoon away! Also good for business meetings which alas, is always what seems to bring me here... They have recently renovated w new marble high tops and giant umbrellas w heaters for those chilly Cali evenings I guess! Aside from the warming and luxury car (i.e., wood panels) atmosphere, I don't exactly obsess over this place. I used to drive the half-hour trek from my house to buy a pound of beans. I considered it worthy of the gas, especially because the drive is amazing (PCH - I took the long way) and it's in a great location (across from Fashion Island; down the way from the pristine Newport Beach Public Library; shares the plaza with Sprinkles cupcakes and Bristol Farms). I don't buy my beans here anymore... I've been enlightened. The problem with Peet's is that ALL of their coffee is over-roasted, resulting in a bitter cup of coffee. Aside from the doctored-up espresso drinks (flavored lattes and such), you can't really down a regular cup of coffee without adding some cream... maybe sugar. It's just way too strong. Starbucks also dark roasts everything. BUT, I would SO rather go to Peet's than to Starbucks. Why? Peet's frequently refreshes their drip coffee every half-hour. Peet's uses Scharffenberger chocolate for their mochas. Peet's also peddles those awesome Bodum double-walled glasses; they're so attractive! All in all, If you're looking for a simple cup of fresh coffee, go to Peet's. Unless you care about crema or the difference between beans from Latin America and Indonesia, you'll like Peet's. read more

This location had very nice workers but the trashcans were all full and the self-serve area was a little messy. This is late in coming but I love Peet's across the board however my husband and I went to this one on a particular BUSY morning -- Memorial Day and there were dozens of bikers that came in (the kind that race not motorcycle haha) and they blasted through the extremely long line and complicated orders and they still were able to make our drinks quickly and perfect to the t! Needed to grab a really quick bite and could only find this place near the corporate park where I had a meeting of Olympic proportions, so I could not be late. They only had breakfast, so without any other options in the area, I went with the Chorizo/Chicken/Cheese Egg Breakfast sandwich based on the barista's reco. It was fabulous, or I was super hungry, either way - it was unique, served hot, tasted great and was made fast enough to pound down and make my meeting. 12 mins to order, heat, serve, eat, down a Pellegrino and head out the door. I like having choices and Peets does not disappoint. You most likely can expect to chat with a customer here as people are friendly. I'm giving a 3 star mainly for the barista behind the espresso machine on Christmas Day, tall gentleman super sweet and handling barista pressure really well. Unlike His coworker at the register, she was rude and short and you could tell she wasn't handling the pressure of the line well. She was an older lady and yes I'm sorry you have to work on Chris but that is no ones fault. She also called espresso EXSPRESSO which as a barista that kills me to hear someone who serves coffee for a living not know how to say what they are serving correctly. I guess I'm just passionate about coffee and that's why I am in specialty coffee. But my point here is the the tall gentleman deserves a raise or to move on to a place where he can shine as he handle the pressure of a holiday line perfectly. WOW! I love Peets Coffee so this was a major let down. While I've had no issues in the past (this is where I buy my coffee every week) this review had to be written regarding service only. I didn't have the coffee during this "transaction" as it was a moot point after my harried dealings with the "not so astute" customer service agents. It wasn't busy, only 2 people in front so I didn't anticipate 30 agonizing minutes just to get a pound of coffee. When I got up to the register and heard "ya.." with an inquisitive eyebrow raise, I had a funny feeling this wasn't going to go well... PEETS: Ya...(eyebrow raise) ME: Yes, I'd like 1/3 pound regular and 2/3 pound decaf blended together please P: Ummm....what? M: 1/3 pound regular and 2/3 pound decaf...I love your coffee, it is just strong so I try and take it down a notch by blending it with mostly decaf P: Ummm...what? Hold on (leaves to ask another Customer Service Agent and brings 2nd Agent back with her) P: New Agent 1 - What did you need? M: 1/3 pound of regular and 2/3 pound of decaf blended together please. P: You mean like 1/4 pound? M: No P: What do you want? Ground coffee? M: Yes, 1/3 regular and 2/3 decaf P: Hold on (leaves to go and get yet another Customer Service Agent) P: New Agent 2 - Can I help you? M: I just need 1/3 regular and 2/3 decaf coffee ground and blended together. I'm curious as a pound of coffee usually looks bigger and I don't ever get a second bag so I peek inside and see two bags of ground coffee...one has .33 lb of regular and one has .66 of decaf. I ALWAYS get them blended together in one bag so I'm just floored at this point! I ask her why she put them in two separate bags and she just looked at me. P: Ummm....what? M: I wanted them blended together...a pound of coffee total P: Ummmm...(and she walks away) I see her talk to another/different Customer Service Agent who just came from the "back" and asks: if she wanted them blended do I have to start over or can I just mix them together? He looks at her and shakes his head and says: NO, you have to start over and grind it all together. She then asks him in a very flustered voice: can you just do it then? He then takes the order from her, grinds the coffee to perfection in a matter of minutes and I'm out the door...30 minutes later. read more
